Wedding Bouquet Painting — Katie Jobling

As you all know, I adore painting flowers, and wedding bouquet painting is just my most favourite thing ever! Being part of such a special event makes me overwhelmed with thankfulness. I wanted to share with you some of my recent wedding bouquet painting commissions, and show you a bit about the process.

Wedding Bouquet Painting Examples

First of all, I want to show you the paintings next to their original photos, so you can see the difference.

My Painting Process

My process begins with studying as many photos of the bouquet as I can. Viewing it from different angles really helps me understand the textures and the ‘feel’ of the bouquet. Then I discuss different options with the customer and see if they have any requests for the painting. Next I get to work on mapping out the bouquet. This is stage one and I mainly use charcoal and washes of acrylic. This is one of my favourite parts as I feel so free and full of possibilities. It’s full of movement and energy as I decide the path the painting will take.

Stage two is where I start adding colour and begin the ideas that flow in my mind. This is where I start deciding the colour palette and build up the layers. I will also send the customer a photograph at this point to check they are happy with how it’s coming together. Usually I start feeling nervous and undecided at this point. It’s where the panic sets in and I begin to dislike the painting. But then…

I start to add structure with contrasting colours and I start to see potential again. This is when I get that excited fluttery feeling in my belly, as anticipation grows to see it progress.

Stage four is also one of my favourite moments, where I add details and try and harmonize the painting. I love to add little embellishments like pearlescent paint or interesting texture.

In the later stages, I send lots of photos so that the customer can really see it evolving. I love that special moment when they see their finished bouquet painting and fall in love with it. I also offer varnishing as an option to acrylic paintings, as they dry pretty quickly.

If you’d like any more info on my wedding bouquet paintings, you can email me at [email protected]. If you’d like to be put on the waiting list or book online fill in this form here.

Custom Wedding Bouquet Paintings by Megan Carty — Megan Carty Art

I use vibrant colors, loose brush strokes, and abstract pencil designs to capture the essence and personality of your wedding bouquet or special floral arrangement. My painting style isn’t as concerned with depicting the EXACT flowers as you see them, but rather, capture the impression and mood they evoke through use of rich color and careful composition.

You will have an incredibly sentimental, uplifting, and stylish piece of heirloom art in your home decor collection you can proudly display anywhere in your lovely home (and show off whenever you have company over!).

NOTE: Your flowers don’t HAVE to be related to a wedding; they can also be in honor of an anniversary, graduation, birthday, retirement, or any other special milestone occasion.

DETAILS

Medium used: Acrylic, pencil, and pastel on gallery-wrapped canvas panels that are 1.5 inches deep

Sides: The sides of the piece can be painted solid white, or any other color. I can also continue the background color onto the sides. This is all your choice. If you are looking to have your piece professionally framed, then I will simply paint the sides white.

Hanging: I typically install hanging hardware and a hanging wire on the back of the piece so it’s ready to go!

Shipping: I can deliver this personally if you are within 1.5 hours of the city of Boston, MA. Otherwise, this piece will ship with utmost care with tracking and insurance via UPS. Shipping/Delivery fees are included in the commission price.

Style: As you can see in the examples below, I paint in a very loose and fluid style. Why do the bouquets look like they are almost melting? I work in an abstract way with a lot of vibrant color that runs down the canvas. This is a distinctive style that sets my paintings apart from all the others. It’s a unique defining design element that I also use to balance the composition of the painting. Flowers are very fleeting; they are here today and gone tomorrow. I capture the memory before it melts away; hence the “melting” paint. If you don’t want the paint dripping down, I can leave that out. If you are not a fan of my general painting style; I am not offended and I’m sure you will find another artist whose style matches your own personal tastes! NOTE: I cannot change my style (it’s like asking me to change my fingerprints), so pretty please do not ask.

A bouquet that never fades…

I first heard about Hannah at The Custom Botanist when a client showed me the amazing painting she had commissioned of her wedding bouquet. I was completely blown away! It is such a beautiful and bespoke way to keep your wedding alive long after the big day is over. Since then, I’ve seen more and more of Hannah’s commissions and I continue to be amazed at her talent.

Here, Hannah explains how The Custom Botanist came to be, and how you can commission your very own bouquet portrait.

A bouquet that never fades…

The Custom Botanist first bloomed around a year and a half ago. I asked some work colleagues if I could borrow photos of their wedding bouquets as I was intrigued to see what they would look like drawn on paper. After seeing one of my drawings, a friend asked me to immortalise her bouquet and it has grown organically from there. I now get most of my commissions from Facebook and Instagram.

I have always had a passion for art. Having studied art at school and college I went on to get a degree in textiles and surface pattern. I moved from Brighton to London after I graduated and got my first “proper” job working as a Buyers Assistant and later as a Product Developer for some well-known high street retailers. It was a fast-paced office environment and I loved it, but eventually the role became more about spreadsheets and less about working with fabric and patterns.

So, after a move to Manchester with my husband and being made redundant in 2017, I decided I needed a more fulfilling creative outlet. My youngest daughter had just turned three, so I was slowly getting some free time back, and decided to pick up my pencils and paint brush again after a very long break.

My idea of heaven is sitting down on my own and drawing for a few hours. I love flowers and could sit and look at them all day.

I start by drawing the layout, I then spend several hours doing the watercolour stage, then add layers of pencil over the top. The work is mixed media, essentially half painting, half drawing.

Each painting is a one off, and the client has a lot of input in the design process and how the end piece will look. All I need is a photograph to work from. After that, from start to finish, each portrait will take around 20 hours to complete. I email the client regular photos and updates, making sure they are happy with how their piece is developing.

Each and every time I receive an order it’s a pinch me moment, and I feel genuinely honoured when someone chooses me to preserve their wedding flowers. The Custom Botanist is a real passion project for me, and seeing how happy my clients are when they receive their final painting fills me with pride. It feels amazing to be drawing again after so many years in an office environment.

Timeframe and Ordering

I only accept a limited number of Wedding Bouquet Commissions per year to maintain the highest level of quality for each painting. These spots fill very quickly, especially in Spring and Fall, causing my Calendar to be full for several months at a time. Ordering requires that 50% of the amount of the painting is due upfront as a deposit to officially be added to my Commission Calendar. The remaining 50% balance is due once the painting is complete. Paintings take 8 to 10 weeks depending on size, style, and my current workload.

How to get started

Browse my images to choose the style of Painting you prefer (Choose from either a Classic or a Sculptural style Painting- See descriptions of each below). Contact me with the size and style you have chosen. I will email you a custom link to pay a non-refundable 50% deposit to be applied to the purchase price. Once your payment has gone through, your painting will officially be added to my Commission Calendar. Your payment secures your spot in line. Send me several photos of the bouquet (the more the better). We can discuss which angle will come out the best for your painting and what background color you choose (Anything in the background of your photos will be omitted and I will use a solid color of your choice.)

Styles

As you can see in the example photos below, I paint in two different styles for you to choose from:

1. Classic Painting (Brush Technique):

This beautiful technique gives a smooth, rich brush stroke appearance. The colors are striking and every detail pops! There is no plaster added to this style, so these have a much faster turnaround time due to quick drying.

2. Sculptural Painting (Textured Palette-knife technique):

This is a distinctive style that sets my paintings apart from all others! This style takes much longer to create than the Classic version. Every flower is hand-sculpted with wet plaster and paint using palette knives and a very carefully layered technique. Some flowers are so thick they take as long as 3 weeks to dry before layering the other flowers around them. This technique gives each flower a 3D buttery effect that is irresistible to touch! Gift certificates available for both styles.

Rob Dudley & Siân Dudley — Wedding Bouquets

Price Guide

Each painting that Siân produces is utterly unique, and the cost of each commission reflects this.

During the discussions that are part of the commissioning process Siân will be happy to discuss her pricing ethos, and will provide you with a quote for you to consider before you commit to commissioning her. Alternatively you may already have a budget in mind, which can be considered at this stage of this process.

Included in the price will be the original painting, which comes mounted and backed to professional framing standards. Additional costs may include framing, travel, shipping and other costs as appropriate, for example, purchasing sample flowers.

Payment

A deposit of £100 or 40% (whichever is greater) is required to confirm the commission. The balance is due on delivery or before shipping.

Please note that, as is usual for art commissions, the deposit is non-returnable, even in the unlikely event that the final the artwork is rejected. All commissions carry an element of ‘creative risk’ which Siân does her very best to reduce as much as possible.

Framing

Siân believes that a frame should not only compliment the painting it surrounds but should also reflect the style of the home in which it hangs, and is therefore best chosen by the owner. As a rule her paintings are presented mounted to a professional standard but without a frame. If you would prefer to have the painting supplied ready to hang Siân will supply the frame too, after discussion regarding taste and budget.

Please note that if you are choosing to have your picture shipped to you it is more difficult and expensive to ship a framed painting than a mounted one.

Photographs for Reference

If you are providing the photographic reference for Siân to work from you might like some advice on the quality of the photographs required to provide all the information that she will need. On occasions Siân has had to refuse commissions as the photograph provided as reference has not been of an acceptable quality. To avoid disappointment she has prepared a document ’Reference Photographs for Painting’. To request a copy please email her.
