Paeonia Inspecteur Lavergne
Origin
Inspecteur Lavergne was discovered in 1924 by the French breeder Doriat. Three years prior Doriat discovered the Madame Claude Tain peony. The most famous discovery of this breeder is the award-winning peony Odile.

This peony is robust: the stems are quite strong. As a result, the flowers do not need support. That’s why Inspecteur Lavergne is a perfect cut flower. When you keep this flower in a vase, you can enjoy it for at least two weeks. Outside in gardens or the open field, this flower blossoms for a long time as well: he shows his flowers almost whole season.

Garden Peonies are old favorites for late spring display, prized for their large, colourful and fragrant blooms. Plants form an upright bush of dark green leaves that stays attractive all season. This selection features large double flowers of deep red, the petals pencil-edged in white. Early/Midseason. Peonies seldom need to be divided or moved, but if necessary it should be carried out only in the fall. Flowering is always best in a sunny location. Full double; large, opens crimson red. The color fades with age, imparting a frosted appearance. Well furnished with petals, the segments fluted and frilled. Good plant habit for a cut flower variety, vigorous, reliable bloom, ample color and a spreading, tall height bush. Side buds extend the bloom season. Medium green foliage remains healthy for most of the growing season. Long stems sag, especially with rain in the opened flower, must have support for flowering in the viewed landscape. Great choice for the cut flower garden.

Paeonia x ‘Inspecteur Lavergne’
Description
Easily grown in rich, fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Plants need abundant moisture during the early part of the growing season. Plants appreciate some part afternoon shade in hot summer climates. Add compost as needed before planting. Rootstock buds (eyes) should be planted about 2” below the soil surface. Each plant will flower for approximately 7-10 days. P. lactiflora is a late blooming species (May-early June). Peony bloom time in the garden can be extended to about 6 weeks (late April-early June) by growing a combination of early, midseason and late blooming cultivars. Remove spent flowers after bloom. Cut foliage to the ground and remove from the garden in fall after frost. Plants are long-lived, do not need to be divided and can be left undisturbed for years. Plants need a cold winter dormant season. Best performance typically occurs in USDA Zones 5-7, but plants often perform well in the northern parts of Zone 8. Cover root areas with mulch in winter, especially in climates where snow cover is minimal. Named cultivars will not come true from seed.
