The voice belongs to an old woman. Sorry that is a dreadful old mask, I wish the makeup department had not made my initial reaction think tacky. The young girl listening to the old woman laughs irritating the old woman. The young girl admits that it is sad that a Goblin who is immortal must find a bride to be able to die. The young woman admits that she has a sad romantic experience being left behind. She spies a pretty jade ring in the old woman’s wares. As she leaves the old woman warns her to pray for mercy because something may be coming for her.
Paris, 1968…
A fashionable man, Kim Shin, (Gong Yoo looking snazzy in a plaid suit) wait outside a building. A young boy with bruises on his face run outside. Kim Shin stops the boy and advises him not to run away but rather face his stepfather and tell him he must raise him well. The boy wants to know how the man knows this. Kim Shin recommends the boy get support from his mother and stop slitting his wrists. Kim Shin moves a large flower pot to the middle of the step. The boy wants to know who the man is. But Kim Shin says again father your step father firmly. The boy asks if his step father beats him again, will the man help? Kim Shin notes he’s breaking his step father’s rib to help the boy. The door opens and the step father lunges for the boy tripping on the flower pot and falling to the ground clutching his ribs. Kim Shin advises the boy on answering a quiz question correctly and walk away leaving the boy staring after the strange man that knew so much be revealed so little.

Kim Shin is a solider. He’s brave and wicked skilled with a sword. Why do all men look better with the long flowing locks of hair? Kim Shin mows down man after man in hand to hand fighting with the sword. He faces the enemy leader. Both men have blood on their face from the fierce battle. Then in a surprise move Kim Shin hops on a horse and chases his enemy striking him down with the sword.
Flush with victory General Kim Shin arrives at the palace. But the welcome isn’t warm. The palace guard calls General Kim Criminal Kim and orders him to remove his armor. General Kim does this. The palace guard orders him to lose his sword. Palace archers appear at the wall and aim down at General Kim and his men. General Kim refuses to lose the sword (and it is a big sword). As he moves forwards the archers shoot his men down in cold blood. General Kim turns and sees his men writhing on the ground. The palace gates open. General Kim enters with his sword. He sees a woman and they stare at each other. He also sees the young King who gets an earful from his advisor about General Kim’s popularity and power. The advisor recommends the young King punish General Kim harshly to maintain his power and position. General Kim’s voiceover states he never suspected the young King’s jealously would be sharper than any sword he’d battled with. He stares at the woman (the Queen?) when he reaches her. The King orders him not to come closer. If he does, General Kim’s entourage will die. General Kim asks the Queen if this is real. The Queen tells him she’s fine and he must go. But she doesn’t want him to retreat, rather she wants him to approach the King. The Queen doesn’t care if she must die, but the General must proceed.
General Kim wants toward the King who seethes with anger. A tear rolls down the woman’s face. The King orders everyone killed. An arrow pierces her heart and she dies. General Kim walks forward. The others in ropes are killed. General Kim’s back of his legs are cut with a sword. His aide rushes into the scene. He can’t believe the Queen has been killed. He yells to the King; doesn’t he fear reprisal from heaven? The answer is no. General Kim struggle to rise but his leg is a wreck. His aide rushes to his side. Knowing his death is imminent, General Kim asks his aide to end his life with his own sword. Tears in his eyes, the aide rams his sword into the General’s torso. When the camera pulls back we see the sword is run through the General and out his back. Ouch! The advisor declares that the General’s body will be left to rot in the field for animals to devour. The King walks away. General Kim looks at the Queen whose life ebbs away as he stares. She wears the ring, the same ring the young woman saw among the old woman’s wares.
General Kim lies in the field, his own sword impaling him. The voiceover states he died by his own sword. Then we see the sword stuck in the ground.
A rather melodramatic start with loads of blood to accompany General Kim’s downfall.
Seoul 1998…
A man dressed in black with white stitching on his black shoes enters a cross walk. A car runs into him. But the man is unharmed and the car looks like it just hit a tank. The driver gets out and can’t believe the man is okay. The man tells the driver he just hit a wild boar. Then he vanishes. People rush to the scene. In the open trunk, they spot a dead woman. The young woman from the initial scene with the old woman falls to the ground in horror. The woman in the trunk wears the same clothes and jewelry she does. The man in black approaches her, looks at a card, and states her time of death. She stares at him.
The man in black takes her for a hot drink. He pushes the drink to her and states this will make her forget her former life. She asks what happens if she doesn’t drink it. The man in black states she’ll regret that choice. He says it’s better to leave her former life behind her. She stares at the drink.
Later the man in black put her tea cup in a huge wall full of cubbies full of tea cups. Now that’s an impressive CGI image!
The Goblin (Kim Shin) walks down the street. He looks in the window and sees the man in black. The man recognizes him as a Goblin. Kim Shin recognizes the man in black as the God of Death Wang Yeo (Lee Dong Wook). But he’s not looking through a glass window, instead to the human eye, it’s a brick wall. Kim Shin declares the man’s disguise as vulgar. Wang Yeo looks insulted. Kim Shin walks away. Ha! I like the touch of humor.
Kim Shin returns to a house and is greeted by an older man who calls him his lordship. There’s a young boy with the old man. It’s been 20 years the old man declares. The young boy doesn’t think Kim Shin looks cool. The old man scolds his grandson, Duk Hwa. The Goblin tells Duk Hwa he’ll be the boy’s friend, brother, father, uncle, etc. throughout his lifetime. Duk Hwa is unimpressed. Kim Shin stares into the boy’s eyes and recognizes his aide from lifetimes ago. Kim Shin declares the boy a descendant of a past friend. The grandfather scolds Duk Hwa.
In the past, an old man and his grandson stand next to General Kim’s sword. The old man apologizes for not seeing him sooner but he’s been sick. The old man declares his grandson will serve him going forward. The sword shakes. Lightning fills the sky. A voice says General Kim’s sword is drenched in the blood of honorable men. For that he will become immortal and alone doomed to watch those he loves die around him. The voice says the gift of immortality is also a punishment. We see the Queen and the ring on her finger. The voice says that only his bride will be able to release him to he can die and rest in peace. Wow, this all kind of dark! The Goblin appears and declares he needs to go somewhere. The stunned old man and grandson stare at the newly materialized General Kim.
You guessed it, General Kim goes to the palace. He first kills the advisor that told the King to kill him and all he loved. Then he approaches the sleeping King. But the King isn’t asleep, he’s dead. General Kim states he was too late.
When the Kim Shin returns, he finds the boy crying over the rocks covering his grandfather’s body. He kneels and says this is his first punishment. The boy asks the Kim Shin to take care of him. He pledges to serve him as his Grandfather wished. Kim Shin says his need for revenge overrode the curtesy of inquiring after the old man’s help. He can’t believe the boy wants to serve him. The boy confirms this is his life. Nice moment when they stare at each other in the field.
On a boat, Kim Shin and the boy enjoys the night sky. Kim Shin convinces the boy to share his food. I must say Goo Yong looks awesome with the hood obscuring part of his handsome face. Two crew members threaten the boy (holding him over the side like they will drop him into the sea) and demand Kim Shin share what’s in his bags. Kim Shin tells them to back off. They drop the boy into the sea and all the crew members draw their swords. Kim Shin warns that they will suffer for their actions. The sea rises. Kim Shin intones that that God of Wrath has come. The men die during the storm. Kim Shin stares without emotion. Another CGI moment when the boat is tipped at a crazy angle. The last man begs for mercy. Kim Shin intones that is it too late. He draws his sword. It glows green. Kim Shin strikes the ship. It sinks. Wow, this has a dark vibe.
Closer to present day…
Kim Shin drinks and watches the city lights. A woman is hit in a snowy parking lot. The driver flees the scene. She cries her pain in her own pool of blood. She pleads with someone to save her. Kim Shin hears her. She continues to plead. He finishes his beer. He sighs.
Kim Shin appears in front of the woman who is lying in a large pool of her own blood. She begs for his help. He says he typically does not involve himself with humans. She begs for his help, not for herself but for her child. She dies. He shakes his head and says she’s lucky to have a soft-hearted god intervene. He stretches his hand over her and a blue light emanates. She wakes in the pool of her own blood.
God of Death Wang Yeo approaches the pool of blood that no longer has a body. He looks at the card identifying the dead person’s attributes. BTW, the stitching on his shoes is cool. There’s a second card without a name but the age is 10. Is it her child?
A woman holds a baby. Spirits around her whisper that the Goblin’s bride has been reincarnated.
Eight years later…
The young girl, Eun Tak, has a mark on her shoulder. Her mother asks what she wants for her birthday. The girl wants a birthday cake. Her mother laughs and agrees. The girl sees a puppy and goes to pet it. But the mother only sees air and not a puppy. The mother shakes her head like this has happened before. Later the girl returns home and finds her mother waiting with a birthday cake. She chatters happily and lights the candles. The girl stares at her mother. She asks if she’s speaking with a spirit. The girl cries and asks her mother if she’s dead. Sadly, the mother confirms she’s dead. The mother explains her body is at the hospital and soon the phone will ring informing her of the accident. The mother says her aunt will meet her at the hospital. She tells her daughter to go to her grandmother’s house. The mother asks her daughter not to look at spirits in the future. The girl apologizes for being able to see spirits. Mother and daughter cry together. They declare their love. Her mother vanishes. The girl sobs her pain. The phone rings. It’s the hospital. The girl puts on the scarf her mother asks her to wear. She looks at the lit birthday cake and declares she won’t make a wish because they never come true.
The mother asks the old man to check in on her daughter when she can. The old woman doesn’t look at her.
Eun Tak exits her house. She sees God of Death Wang Yeo. Eun Tak asks why he’s there. He’s surprised that she can see him. Remembering that she’s not supposed to talk to spirits, she turns around. God of Death Wang Yeo approaches. He wonders how someone that should never have been born is alive. Wang Yeo remembers the second card he held when he found the blood stain without a body. He asks the girl if she is 9. Eun Tak claims she can’t hear the man. The old woman appears and tells the man to leave. The girl is relieved to see the woman she calls grandmother. Eun Tak runs to her. Wang Yeo tells the old woman she’s interfering. The old woman doesn’t care. The old woman demands to see the certificate with the girl’s name. But the certificate doesn’t have a name. Stymied Wang Yeo tells the girl he’ll see her again. Holy smokes, this show is 90 minutes long!
Eun Tak explains her mother died. The old woman tells the girl she’ll have to move because she looked directly at the God of Death. The grandmother says the girl will meet a man and woman at the funeral home and they will escort her to safety. The old woman says her mother was so happy when she was pregnant. She gives Eun Tak cabbage and leaves.
10 years later….
The old woman crosses a bridge and passes a young boy. She morphs into a woman in red pantsuit. The boy becomes a young man. It’s 10 years later. The young man invites her to have a drink. She accepts with a smile.
Kim Shin listens to his nephew Duk Hwa asks him to save him. He reads and smiles.
Ji Eun Tak (Kim Go Eun) is now a senior in high school. She tries to ignore a spirt as she walks home from school but when the spirit appears right in front of her she reacts. The spirit apologizes and leaves. Eun Tak doesn’t understand why the spirit left. We see Kim Shin staring at the Eun Tak. She passes him….in slow mo! Kim Shin stares at her retreating back. He senses the past.
The old man hand Kim Shin a passport and states that that Duk Hwa is now 25. The old man realizes this is the last time he’ll see his master. Kim Shin thanks him for his service. The old man says his grandson will be there when he returns. Yoo Duk Hwa (Yook Sung Jae) bursts in the door not happy that Uncle Shin didn’t come to his rescue. His grandfather calls him a brat. The young man see the passport. He asks if Uncle Shin is leaving yet again to search for his bride. He’s not happy about this. Kim Shin shakes his head.
Eun Tak wakes to a new day. She makes breakfast for a women and her two adult children. They snipe at the girl. The older woman says Eun Tak killed her mother so she could be born. That’s harsh! Eun Tak thanks her for the birthday wishes. The woman laughs and says she’s sorry that she took in a stray and has let her live there for 10 years. Eun Tak stands at the door to leave for school. It’s raining. They warn her not to take the umbrella. The woman demands Eun Tak hand over her mother’s insurance pay out. Eun Tak denies having money. The woman throws her rice bowl at the girl and hits her in the back of her head. Ouch! Eun Tak says the woman stole her money and her house already. Eun Tak stalks away into the rain after telling the other woman a spirit is behind her.
Eun Tak sits on rocks and stares at the sea. Kim Shin sits on a bench in a field of flowers. Eun Tak pulls out a birthday cake and puts on the scarf she wore 10 years ago when she left her house knowing her mother was dead. Kim Shin remembers telling the old man that he’ll be traveling alone. He comments that no woman has ever seen his sword. The old man declares he hopes that the Goblin’s bride appears when he’s worried about his sword. Then he hopes that if sword isn’t seen, then no human finds it. They smile and clink their glasses together. Back in the field the Kim Shin holds flowers. Eun Tak lights the candles on her cake. Eun Tak says she’s breaking her promise by making a wish but she asks for a job, the situation with her relatives to improve, and a boyfriend. Yep, she’s 19! Kim Shin hears her wish that includes improving her pathetic life. Eun Tak blows out the candles on her cake. His flowers smoke. The skies threaten rain. Eun Tak yells that it’s unfair to rain when she does not have an umbrella. Kim Shin appears behind her. She’s startled when he speaks. He asks if she summoned him. Eun Tak says she didn’t summon him. He says she did. Eun Tak says she didn’t summon him but she can see him, just as she saw him the other day when they passed each other in the rain. Eun Tak asks if he’s a ghost. Kim Shin says he’s not a ghost. She doesn’t believe him. Kim Shin asks why she can’t see her future. Eun Tak tells him she has no future. She asks who he is. Eun Tak guesses he is a con man. They banter a bit. Eun Tak holds out her hands for the flowers. Eun Tak says she deserves flowers on this depressing birthday. Kim Shin hands her the flowers. Eun Tak asks what the meaning of the flowers are. He tells her the flowers are between lovers. She stares at him. He stares at her. Kim Shin asks who she was crying over. He confirms he heard her wish. He says he grants wishes. That makes her happy. Eun Tak asks if he’s her genie. She asks for money or to know which lottery number to pick. He tells her to say goodbye to her family because she won’t see them for a while. Kim Shin tells her to keep looking for a job. He disappears. Eun Tak calls after him, what about my boyfriend? Ha! Disgusted, Eun Tak calls him a poor sport.
When Kim Shin returns home, the God of Death is there. They don’t appear to recognize each other. Duk Hwa is showing the home to him. The young man explains that renting it out while his uncle is gone for 20 years makes sense money wise. Kim Shin asks if the young man realizes who this man is. The young man says their new tenant owns tea houses. Ha! Wang Yeo tells Kim Shin he’s already paid his nephew a hefty cash deposit. Kim Shin tells him to leave. Wang Yeo holds up the signed lease. Kim Shin points his finger at the lease and it goes up in flames. Ha! Kim Shin blows on his finger. Ha! Wang Yeo says that was just a copy and he’s moving in tomorrow. Kim Shin tells him to leave. Wang Yeo tells him to pack. Wang Yeo says he can take the life of the young man who signed the lease with him. Kim Shin smiles and says he’s welcome to stay in his house. Wang Yeo says it’s his house. Ha! Kim Shin says kicking him out won’t be easy. They stare the stare of old adversaries. They dine together. They irritate each other. Ha!
Eun Tak stares at the flowers she got from Kim Shin and scoffs at the idea of lovers. The next day she goes in search of a job. Eun Tak takes a break after many rejections. Eun Tak snipes that her genie was wrong about finding a job. Eun Tak sees a paper on fire and puts it out with her water. Kim Shin appears in front of her. Eun Tak demands to know why he’s following her. He says she summoned him. She doesn’t know how she did it and doesn’t believe she did it anyhow. She says the job search was a bust. He tells her she summoned him unlike anyone else ever has. She considers this. She asks what he knows about her. He says she’s got a school uniform on and she’s pretty. She preens and he amends the statement to be her uniform is pretty. Ha! She asks if she’s a fairy like Tinker Bell. He disappears. She’s irritated she let him get away without giving her his phone number. Honey, he doesn’t have a cell but you don’t know that yet.
Eun Tak figures out she can summon Kim Shin by blowing out fire. Eun Tak summons him by blowing out a candle in church. He’s not impressed with her location choice. Kim Shin starts to walk away from her. Eun Tak asks why he doesn’t disappear. Kim Shin says he can’t do his thing inside a church, it’s a “dead zone” for his powers. Eun Tak demands to know when he’ll grant her wishes. Kim Shin says soon. She’s most interested in having a boyfriend. He tells her that will take too much effort. Kim Shin leaves. Ha!
Eun Tak puts a candle app on her phone. Ha! She blows out the candle. Kim Shin appears. She’s thrilled. He’s irritated. He turns to leave and she grabs his arm. Blue smoke comes off his arm. Kim Shin sees it. It doesn’t look like she did. But she releases his arm saying it is too hot to hold. She thought he’d be cold to the touch. Kim Shin chides her that the blue flame is the hottest. Eun Tak chatters as he starts to leave. She asks him to hear her out. Kim Shin agrees to listen. Eun Tak admits at first she thought he was the Wang Yeo. But she’s still alive so that’s wrong. Then she thought he was a ghost but he has a shadow. Eun Tak asks if he’s a Goblin. Bingo! Kim Shin stares at her. Kim Shin asks who she really is. Eun Tak says this will sound weird but she’s the Goblin’s bride. She shows him the mark that she believes identifies her as the Goblin’s bride. Kim Shin remembers saving her mother from death. He tells her to prove it. Eun Tak doesn’t know how. Kim Shin tells her to describe what she sees when she looks at him. Ah, is he wondering if she can see his sword?
Eun Tak lists his attributes: tall, expensive clothes, and kinda good looking. Kim Shin tells her if that’s all she’s sees then she isn’t the Goblin’s bride. Kim Shin tells her that she’s not even supposed to be alive so her very existence breaks the rules. Eun Tak tears up and asks why should she be thankful. She demands that he tell her if he’s a Goblin. He claims he’s not. Kim Shin tells her he only cares minimally about her unhappy life. He recommends that she “tune into reality instead of listening to rumors.” Kim Shin tells her she’s not the Goblin’s bride. He strides away.
Kim Shin walks through a time portal. She follows starling him. Eun Tak tells him their conversation is not over. Kim Shin asks how she followed him through the door. Eun Tak says she grabbed the doorknob and opened the door. She doesn’t recognize where they are. Kim Shin can’t believe she went through the time portal with him. She asks where they are. Kim Shin tells her Canada. Eun Tak’s stunned. Then she’s thrilled.
Eun Tak strides forward. She stops. She declares if she can do this then she knows what’s next. Kim Shin asks what that is. She states she’ll marry him because she thinks he’s a Goblin. She smiles and declares that she loves him. Kim Shin stares at her smiling face.
My thoughts
Bottom line. I was thrilled when our couple meet and the sparks flew between them. Gong Yoo is looking good. I’m watching for him but she scored with me too. Looking forward to the next episode which I hope will only be 60 minutes.
I didn’t know much about the concept of this show as I avoid teasers. This was a long first episode with loads of setup and background. Frankly, it was a bit draggy or maybe that’s my fingers from typing this recap. The bulk of the episode had a dark hue. But then Eun Tak turned 19 and the energy picked up, and you immediately saw the potential of this couple. Let’s address the age gap. He’s supposedly 35 and she’s 19. We know he’s actually several hundred years old. Eun Tak is 19. My initial reaction was that he’s too old. But the more I saw them interact, the more I got sucked into the vortex of their potential. But based on the legend that he must find a bride so he can die, aren’t they doomed lovers? Let’s deal with that as we go.
Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) is a bummed out he has lived too long without love. He can scarcely believe that she could be his bride. He can scarcely believe that she can summon him. I love banter between a couple. They had wonder fast paced banter, which I adored. She brightened him a bit, which I wanted to see. Who wants to watch a Goblin without any joy? I enjoyed the rivalry between the Wang Yeo and Kim Shin…more please.
Eun Tak (Kim Go Eun) has spunk and can see spirts. What’s not to love? Something about her works for me. Eun Tak challenges him. She isn’t swooning over him. Eun Tak wants a better life. If he can give it to her, she’s willing to join him. Who doesn’t like a pragmatic leading lady?

A voiceover explains Goblin origins (touching object with blood of human is one way) and how the resulting Goblin lives in the world but is not completely part of it. The voice belongs to an old woman. Sorry that is a dreadful old mask, I wish the makeup department had not made my initial reaction think tacky. The young girl listening to the old woman laughs irritating the old woman. The young girl admits that it is sad that a Goblin who is immortal must find a bride to be able to die. The young woman admits that she has a sad romantic experience being left behind. She spies a pretty jade ring in the old woman’s wares. As she leaves the old woman warns her to pray for mercy because something may be coming for her.
Paris, 1968…
A fashionable man, Kim Shin, (Gong Yoo looking snazzy in a plaid suit) wait outside a building. A young boy with bruises on his face run outside. Kim Shin stops the boy and advises him not to run away but rather face his stepfather and tell him he must raise him well. The boy wants to know how the man knows this. Kim Shin recommends the boy get support from his mother and stop slitting his wrists. Kim Shin moves a large flower pot to the middle of the step. The boy wants to know who the man is. But Kim Shin says again father your step father firmly. The boy asks if his step father beats him again, will the man help? Kim Shin notes he’s breaking his step father’s rib to help the boy. The door opens and the step father lunges for the boy tripping on the flower pot and falling to the ground clutching his ribs. Kim Shin advises the boy on answering a quiz question correctly and walk away leaving the boy staring after the strange man that knew so much be revealed so little.
Back to the origin…
Kim Shin is a solider. He’s brave and wicked skilled with a sword. Why do all men look better with the long flowing locks of hair? Kim Shin mows down man after man in hand to hand fighting with the sword. He faces the enemy leader. Both men have blood on their face from the fierce battle. Then in a surprise move Kim Shin hops on a horse and chases his enemy striking him down with the sword.
Flush with victory General Kim Shin arrives at the palace. But the welcome isn’t warm. The palace guard calls General Kim Criminal Kim and orders him to remove his armor. General Kim does this. The palace guard orders him to lose his sword. Palace archers appear at the wall and aim down at General Kim and his men. General Kim refuses to lose the sword (and it is a big sword). As he moves forwards the archers shoot his men down in cold blood. General Kim turns and sees his men writhing on the ground. The palace gates open. General Kim enters with his sword. He sees a woman and they stare at each other. He also sees the young King who gets an earful from his advisor about General Kim’s popularity and power. The advisor recommends the young King punish General Kim harshly to maintain his power and position. General Kim’s voiceover states he never suspected the young King’s jealously would be sharper than any sword he’d battled with. He stares at the woman (the Queen?) when he reaches her. The King orders him not to come closer. If he does, General Kim’s entourage will die. General Kim asks the Queen if this is real. The Queen tells him she’s fine and he must go. But she doesn’t want him to retreat, rather she wants him to approach the King. The Queen doesn’t care if she must die, but the General must proceed.
General Kim wants toward the King who seethes with anger. A tear rolls down the woman’s face. The King orders everyone killed. An arrow pierces her heart and she dies. General Kim walks forward. The others in ropes are killed. General Kim’s back of his legs are cut with a sword. His aide rushes into the scene. He can’t believe the Queen has been killed. He yells to the King; doesn’t he fear reprisal from heaven? The answer is no. General Kim struggle to rise but his leg is a wreck. His aide rushes to his side. Knowing his death is imminent, General Kim asks his aide to end his life with his own sword. Tears in his eyes, the aide rams his sword into the General’s torso. When the camera pulls back we see the sword is run through the General and out his back. Ouch! The advisor declares that the General’s body will be left to rot in the field for animals to devour. The King walks away. General Kim looks at the Queen whose life ebbs away as he stares. She wears the ring, the same ring the young woman saw among the old woman’s wares.
General Kim lies in the field, his own sword impaling him. The voiceover states he died by his own sword. Then we see the sword stuck in the ground.
A rather melodramatic start with loads of blood to accompany General Kim’s downfall.
Seoul 1998…
A man dressed in black with white stitching on his black shoes enters a cross walk. A car runs into him. But the man is unharmed and the car looks like it just hit a tank. The driver gets out and can’t believe the man is okay. The man tells the driver he just hit a wild boar. Then he vanishes. People rush to the scene. In the open trunk, they spot a dead woman. The young woman from the initial scene with the old woman falls to the ground in horror. The woman in the trunk wears the same clothes and jewelry she does. The man in black approaches her, looks at a card, and states her time of death. She stares at him.
The man in black takes her for a hot drink. He pushes the drink to her and states this will make her forget her former life. She asks what happens if she doesn’t drink it. The man in black states she’ll regret that choice. He says it’s better to leave her former life behind her. She stares at the drink.
Later the man in black put her tea cup in a huge wall full of cubbies full of tea cups. Now that’s an impressive CGI image!
The Goblin (Kim Shin) walks down the street. He looks in the window and sees the man in black. The man recognizes him as a Goblin. Kim Shin recognizes the man in black as the God of Death Wang Yeo (Lee Dong Wook). But he’s not looking through a glass window, instead to the human eye, it’s a brick wall. Kim Shin declares the man’s disguise as vulgar. Wang Yeo looks insulted. Kim Shin walks away. Ha! I like the touch of humor.
Kim Shin returns to a house and is greeted by an older man who calls him his lordship. There’s a young boy with the old man. It’s been 20 years the old man declares. The young boy doesn’t think Kim Shin looks cool. The old man scolds his grandson, Duk Hwa. The Goblin tells Duk Hwa he’ll be the boy’s friend, brother, father, uncle, etc. throughout his lifetime. Duk Hwa is unimpressed. Kim Shin stares into the boy’s eyes and recognizes his aide from lifetimes ago. Kim Shin declares the boy a descendant of a past friend. The grandfather scolds Duk Hwa.
In the past, an old man and his grandson stand next to General Kim’s sword. The old man apologizes for not seeing him sooner but he’s been sick. The old man declares his grandson will serve him going forward. The sword shakes. Lightning fills the sky. A voice says General Kim’s sword is drenched in the blood of honorable men. For that he will become immortal and alone doomed to watch those he loves die around him. The voice says the gift of immortality is also a punishment. We see the Queen and the ring on her finger. The voice says that only his bride will be able to release him to he can die and rest in peace. Wow, this all kind of dark! The Goblin appears and declares he needs to go somewhere. The stunned old man and grandson stare at the newly materialized General Kim.
You guessed it, General Kim goes to the palace. He first kills the advisor that told the King to kill him and all he loved. Then he approaches the sleeping King. But the King isn’t asleep, he’s dead. General Kim states he was too late.
When the Kim Shin returns, he finds the boy crying over the rocks covering his grandfather’s body. He kneels and says this is his first punishment. The boy asks the Kim Shin to take care of him. He pledges to serve him as his Grandfather wished. Kim Shin says his need for revenge overrode the curtesy of inquiring after the old man’s help. He can’t believe the boy wants to serve him. The boy confirms this is his life. Nice moment when they stare at each other in the field.
On a boat, Kim Shin and the boy enjoys the night sky. Kim Shin convinces the boy to share his food. I must say Goo Yong looks awesome with the hood obscuring part of his handsome face. Two crew members threaten the boy (holding him over the side like they will drop him into the sea) and demand Kim Shin share what’s in his bags. Kim Shin tells them to back off. They drop the boy into the sea and all the crew members draw their swords. Kim Shin warns that they will suffer for their actions. The sea rises. Kim Shin intones that that God of Wrath has come. The men die during the storm. Kim Shin stares without emotion. Another CGI moment when the boat is tipped at a crazy angle. The last man begs for mercy. Kim Shin intones that is it too late. He draws his sword. It glows green. Kim Shin strikes the ship. It sinks. Wow, this has a dark vibe.
Closer to present day…
Kim Shin drinks and watches the city lights. A woman is hit in a snowy parking lot. The driver flees the scene. She cries her pain in her own pool of blood. She pleads with someone to save her. Kim Shin hears her. She continues to plead. He finishes his beer. He sighs.
Kim Shin appears in front of the woman who is lying in a large pool of her own blood. She begs for his help. He says he typically does not involve himself with humans. She begs for his help, not for herself but for her child. She dies. He shakes his head and says she’s lucky to have a soft-hearted god intervene. He stretches his hand over her and a blue light emanates. She wakes in the pool of her own blood.
God of Death Wang Yeo approaches the pool of blood that no longer has a body. He looks at the card identifying the dead person’s attributes. BTW, the stitching on his shoes is cool. There’s a second card without a name but the age is 10. Is it her child?
A woman holds a baby. Spirits around her whisper that the Goblin’s bride has been reincarnated.
Eight years later…
The young girl, Eun Tak, has a mark on her shoulder. Her mother asks what she wants for her birthday. The girl wants a birthday cake. Her mother laughs and agrees. The girl sees a puppy and goes to pet it. But the mother only sees air and not a puppy. The mother shakes her head like this has happened before. Later the girl returns home and finds her mother waiting with a birthday cake. She chatters happily and lights the candles. The girl stares at her mother. She asks if she’s speaking with a spirit. The girl cries and asks her mother if she’s dead. Sadly, the mother confirms she’s dead. The mother explains her body is at the hospital and soon the phone will ring informing her of the accident. The mother says her aunt will meet her at the hospital. She tells her daughter to go to her grandmother’s house. The mother asks her daughter not to look at spirits in the future. The girl apologizes for being able to see spirits. Mother and daughter cry together. They declare their love. Her mother vanishes. The girl sobs her pain. The phone rings. It’s the hospital. The girl puts on the scarf her mother asks her to wear. She looks at the lit birthday cake and declares she won’t make a wish because they never come true.
The mother asks the old man to check in on her daughter when she can. The old woman doesn’t look at her.
Eun Tak exits her house. She sees God of Death Wang Yeo. Eun Tak asks why he’s there. He’s surprised that she can see him. Remembering that she’s not supposed to talk to spirits, she turns around. God of Death Wang Yeo approaches. He wonders how someone that should never have been born is alive. Wang Yeo remembers the second card he held when he found the blood stain without a body. He asks the girl if she is 9. Eun Tak claims she can’t hear the man. The old woman appears and tells the man to leave. The girl is relieved to see the woman she calls grandmother. Eun Tak runs to her. Wang Yeo tells the old woman she’s interfering. The old woman doesn’t care. The old woman demands to see the certificate with the girl’s name. But the certificate doesn’t have a name. Stymied Wang Yeo tells the girl he’ll see her again. Holy smokes, this show is 90 minutes long!
Eun Tak explains her mother died. The old woman tells the girl she’ll have to move because she looked directly at the God of Death. The grandmother says the girl will meet a man and woman at the funeral home and they will escort her to safety. The old woman says her mother was so happy when she was pregnant. She gives Eun Tak cabbage and leaves.
10 years later….
The old woman crosses a bridge and passes a young boy. She morphs into a woman in red pantsuit. The boy becomes a young man. It’s 10 years later. The young man invites her to have a drink. She accepts with a smile.
Kim Shin listens to his nephew Duk Hwa asks him to save him. He reads and smiles.
Ji Eun Tak (Kim Go Eun) is now a senior in high school. She tries to ignore a spirt as she walks home from school but when the spirit appears right in front of her she reacts. The spirit apologizes and leaves. Eun Tak doesn’t understand why the spirit left. We see Kim Shin staring at the Eun Tak. She passes him….in slow mo! Kim Shin stares at her retreating back. He senses the past.
The old man hand Kim Shin a passport and states that that Duk Hwa is now 25. The old man realizes this is the last time he’ll see his master. Kim Shin thanks him for his service. The old man says his grandson will be there when he returns. Yoo Duk Hwa (Yook Sung Jae) bursts in the door not happy that Uncle Shin didn’t come to his rescue. His grandfather calls him a brat. The young man see the passport. He asks if Uncle Shin is leaving yet again to search for his bride. He’s not happy about this. Kim Shin shakes his head.
Eun Tak wakes to a new day. She makes breakfast for a women and her two adult children. They snipe at the girl. The older woman says Eun Tak killed her mother so she could be born. That’s harsh! Eun Tak thanks her for the birthday wishes. The woman laughs and says she’s sorry that she took in a stray and has let her live there for 10 years. Eun Tak stands at the door to leave for school. It’s raining. They warn her not to take the umbrella. The woman demands Eun Tak hand over her mother’s insurance pay out. Eun Tak denies having money. The woman throws her rice bowl at the girl and hits her in the back of her head. Ouch! Eun Tak says the woman stole her money and her house already. Eun Tak stalks away into the rain after telling the other woman a spirit is behind her.
Eun Tak sits on rocks and stares at the sea. Kim Shin sits on a bench in a field of flowers. Eun Tak pulls out a birthday cake and puts on the scarf she wore 10 years ago when she left her house knowing her mother was dead. Kim Shin remembers telling the old man that he’ll be traveling alone. He comments that no woman has ever seen his sword. The old man declares he hopes that the Goblin’s bride appears when he’s worried about his sword. Then he hopes that if sword isn’t seen, then no human finds it. They smile and clink their glasses together. Back in the field the Kim Shin holds flowers. Eun Tak lights the candles on her cake. Eun Tak says she’s breaking her promise by making a wish but she asks for a job, the situation with her relatives to improve, and a boyfriend. Yep, she’s 19! Kim Shin hears her wish that includes improving her pathetic life. Eun Tak blows out the candles on her cake. His flowers smoke. The skies threaten rain. Eun Tak yells that it’s unfair to rain when she does not have an umbrella. Kim Shin appears behind her. She’s startled when he speaks. He asks if she summoned him. Eun Tak says she didn’t summon him. He says she did. Eun Tak says she didn’t summon him but she can see him, just as she saw him the other day when they passed each other in the rain. Eun Tak asks if he’s a ghost. Kim Shin says he’s not a ghost. She doesn’t believe him. Kim Shin asks why she can’t see her future. Eun Tak tells him she has no future. She asks who he is. Eun Tak guesses he is a con man. They banter a bit. Eun Tak holds out her hands for the flowers. Eun Tak says she deserves flowers on this depressing birthday. Kim Shin hands her the flowers. Eun Tak asks what the meaning of the flowers are. He tells her the flowers are between lovers. She stares at him. He stares at her. Kim Shin asks who she was crying over. He confirms he heard her wish. He says he grants wishes. That makes her happy. Eun Tak asks if he’s her genie. She asks for money or to know which lottery number to pick. He tells her to say goodbye to her family because she won’t see them for a while. Kim Shin tells her to keep looking for a job. He disappears. Eun Tak calls after him, what about my boyfriend? Ha! Disgusted, Eun Tak calls him a poor sport.

The young man explains that renting it out while his uncle is gone for 20 years makes sense money wise. Kim Shin asks if the young man realizes who this man is. He tells her to prove it. Eun Tak doesn’t know how. Kim Shin tells her to describe what she sees when she looks at him. Ah, is he wondering if she can see his sword?
Eun Tak lists his attributes: tall, expensive clothes, and kinda good looking. Kim Shin tells her if that’s all she’s sees then she isn’t the Goblin’s bride. Kim Shin tells her that she’s not even supposed to be alive so her very existence breaks the rules. Eun Tak tears up and asks why should she be thankful. She demands that he tell her if he’s a Goblin. He claims he’s not. Kim Shin tells her he only cares minimally about her unhappy life. He recommends that she “tune into reality instead of listening to rumors.” Kim Shin tells her she’s not the Goblin’s bride. He strides away.
Kim Shin walks through a time portal. She follows starling him. Eun Tak tells him their conversation is not over. Kim Shin asks how she followed him through the door. Eun Tak says she grabbed the doorknob and opened the door. She doesn’t recognize where they are. Kim Shin can’t believe she went through the time portal with him. She asks where they are. Kim Shin tells her Canada. Eun Tak’s stunned. Then she’s thrilled.
Eun Tak strides forward. She stops. She declares if she can do this then she knows what’s next. Kim Shin asks what that is. She states she’ll marry him because she thinks he’s a Goblin. She smiles and declares that she loves him. Kim Shin stares at her smiling face.
My thoughts
Bottom line. I was thrilled when our couple meet and the sparks flew between them. Gong Yoo is looking good. I’m watching for him but she scored with me too. Looking forward to the next episode which I hope will only be 60 minutes.
I didn’t know much about the concept of this show as I avoid teasers. This was a long first episode with loads of setup and background. Frankly, it was a bit draggy or maybe that’s my fingers from typing this recap. The bulk of the episode had a dark hue. But then Eun Tak turned 19 and the energy picked up, and you immediately saw the potential of this couple. Let’s address the age gap. He’s supposedly 35 and she’s 19. We know he’s actually several hundred years old. Eun Tak is 19. My initial reaction was that he’s too old. But the more I saw them interact, the more I got sucked into the vortex of their potential. But based on the legend that he must find a bride so he can die, aren’t they doomed lovers? Let’s deal with that as we go.
Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) is a bummed out he has lived too long without love. He can scarcely believe that she could be his bride. He can scarcely believe that she can summon him. I love banter between a couple. They had wonder fast paced banter, which I adored. She brightened him a bit, which I wanted to see. Who wants to watch a Goblin without any joy? I enjoyed the rivalry between the Wang Yeo and Kim Shin…more please.
Eun Tak (Kim Go Eun) has spunk and can see spirts. What’s not to love? Something about her works for me. Eun Tak challenges him. She isn’t swooning over him. Eun Tak wants a better life. If he can give it to her, she’s willing to join him. Who doesn’t like a pragmatic leading lady?

Goblin: The Lonely and Great God Episode 1 Recap
We start off the series with a legend. It tells us that everything contains a spirit and energy, including a sword with so much on it. Only the Goblin’s wife can pull the sword turning him back to nothing and allowing him to rest. (I’m not sure what this will have to do with the story but I’m sure we’re going to find out.)
We pan out to an older woman telling a woman (Park Hee Von) the story and how it was a cruel deal for the Goblin to find himself immortal. He is everywhere in the world and not where all at once. She begins to laugh, telling the old lady that she doesn’t believe that the Goblin is still around, let alone that she is his wife. The old woman teases her about once being pretty. She goes to leave after wish the woman goodbye, however, the woman grabs her hand. She warns her that at a time when her life is flashing before her eyes, she should pray for mercy to a God because a God with a soft spot might hear her.
We rewind to 1968 in Paris, and we find Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) walking down the street. A young boy comes out and he stops him, recommending him not to run away from home as his future would be worst if he did. He suggests a few options on what to do but the boy can’t believe what he’s saying. Kim Shin warns him about slitting his wrist which gets his attention. As he asks if he’ll take responsibility if he’s beaten to death. Kim Shin tells him that’s why he broke his father’s ribs for him and just then the man comes out and trips over the potted plant that he previously moved. The boy asks him who he really is but he simply hands him a sandwich and leaves a very puzzled boy in his wake. (I’d be confused too.)
The question is asked again, who is he. He is all of the elements, both light and darkness, however, at one time he was human. We see Kim Shin on the battlefield. He was a military leader whose nickname was God. He was a renown warrior who could beat all of his adversaries on the battlefield. We then see a very well choreographed battle scene.
He arrives back to the palace and they welcome him as a hero. However, once at the palace gates, he’s told to remove his armour and is called a criminal. His army disagrees with the statement. He agrees to remove his armour but does not let go of his sword. He steps forward, telling them that he will see the king and archers fire. They kill some of his men and his lieutenant is appalled because they fought for them. The doors open which grants Kim Shin entrance. He goes in alone as to protect his men.
He comes face to face with a woman dress in white and behind her was the king. He’s told of Kim Shin’s status by his advisor and the threat that he poses. The king is suggested to give him the harshest punishment allowed under their law. When the general arrives next to the queen he’s told that if he come’s any closer the people in front of him will die. The queen tells him to walk forward as he must reach the king. Kim Shin is reluctant but she tells him that if it is her fate to die there, then so be it, but he must reach the king. He goes to tell her something but she admits that she’s always known (Probably that he loves her) and he sets his eyes on the king and pushes forward again. She’s shot through the heart but Kim Shin doesn’t look back. He steps forward and 1/2 of the people are sliced down. He pauses slightly and a guard comes forward to slice his back. Kim Shin’slieutenantt comes running can’t believe they have killed the princess. A guard comes forward to kill Kim Shin , but though he is injured he protects himself. He tells the guard that it has nothing to do with him, and his lieutenant comes to his side. He asks for one last favour and hands his sword to his lieutenant. Though he begs for forgiveness, he stabs Kim Shin through the heart and cries as he dies. HIs friend is killed before him. Kim Shin is to be sent to the fields to be eaten by animals. Before he loses consciousness he looks towards the queen and their eyes meet one last time before she falls still.
Kim Shin lies in the field with his sword sticking out of his chest, as nearby men pray for him to be spared. He believed that the prayers would do no good because no god was listening. That afternoon he died in the field and the sword was never moved.
Fast forward to Seoul in 1998, Wang Yeo (Lee Dong Wook) is walking the streets one foggy morning. He crosses the street and a car comes out of nowhere. It hits him, but instead of anything happening to him, the car is as damaged as it would be if he had hit a tree. He tells the driver that he hit a wild boar and walks off. A van pulls up and the man breaks out of the trance and tells the driver the same information. People start to notice the dead body in the trunk, as does the dead woman. Wang Yeo comes up to her and informs her about the information he received is accurate and if she is the woman he was looking for.
Wang Yeo takes her to a tea shop and serves her tea. He tells her that it will make her forget everything that happened in the previous life. She asked what would happen if she doesn’t drink it. He tells her that she’ll regret it and he hopes she can leave her regrets in the past life. Wang Yeo is suddenly alone doing dishes and he puts away the tea cup in a huge room. When he comes out Kim Shin walks past his shopping. They notice each other, but Kim Shin walks on.
Kim Shin arrives because to the house and is greeted by his butler and his butler’s grandson. We find out that it’s been 20 years since they’d last saw each other. The grandson is a little insulant, but Kim shin seems to enjoy that. After closer inspection, he tells the young boy that he looks like his ancestors.
Back to the past, we see an old man visiting Kim Shin’s sword. He apologises for not looking out for him but he’s been sick. He introduces his grandson, who can’t believe he’s grandfather’s lordship is a sword. At that moment, the sword shifts and he’is told that his servants have saved his soul, however, as punishment for killing so many of God’s creations he will be immortal and watch as all his loved ones die. Only the goblin’s bride can remove the sword and let him rest. His servant is surprised that he returned from the grave. He tells them that he has a place to go.
He goes to the palace to find the king. He stumbles upon his advisors and killed them. He finds himself too late to kill the king as he’s already dead. Kim Shin arrives back to his friend to find him dead and his grandson crying over his grave. He accepts it as his first punishment and the young boy asks him to accept him. Though shocked, as he doesn’t like his own reaction to coming back to like, he agrees to let the boy stay with him.
Kim Shin and the boy board a boat and the boy forgets himself as he enjoys the view. He tries to acts like a servant but Kim Shin just wants him to enjoy himself. When he notices that the boy is hungry he offers him his food. He refuses and when Kim Shin finally gets him to take the food some thugs pick the boy up. He suggests that they let the boy go and they start suggesting that they’ll sell them as slaves. When they drop the ocean, Kim Shin asks if they know what happens when humans act like the lesser animals and he tells them that they’ll meet with the God of Wrath. The waters become rough and one of the men notices him as the goblin that he is. He sinks their boat out of sheer anger and when they beg to be saved he tells them that it’s too late. He pulls out his mystical sword and splits the boat into pieces. (The visuals in this are fantastic!)
Back to 1998, Kim Shin is sitting alone, atop a sign. He is happy that he is back in Seoul at his leisure. He listens to the noise around him and hears a crash. A woman lays in the snow after the hit-and-run coughing up blood. She begs for anyone to save her. Kim Shin comes to her rescue and she asks him who he is. He tells her just anyone. She begs for him to save her, but he informs her that he doesn’t get involved in human lives. He realises that it’s not her own life that she wants saved, but rather that of her child. He grants her wish to live claiming that he doesn’t want to see anyone die that night.
Wang Yeo comes to the accident scene but the woman is not there. He looks at his cards again and wonders why there is snow, rain and flowers. Eun Tak is born healthy and safe. Outside the window of the hospital room a group of ghost group together and whisper about the goblin’s bride making a return.
We fast forward to 2006, Eun Tak is 8 , soon to be 9 years old. She is waiting for her mother to finish work. They talk about getting a cake for her birthday. Eun Tak runs over to a puppy and starts to play, but we see that the puppy is a spirit. After school, Eun Tak arrives home and her mother invites her to light the candles. After a moment, Eun Tak realises that her mother is dead, and she talking to her spirit. Her mother warns her that she’ll be getting a phone call and will need to go to the hospital. Her aunt will arrive after her and she’s to as the woman at the supermarket to go with her. Euk Tak promises to follow her instructions. Her mother warns her to never talk with a spirit again but is grateful that they can see each other one last time. Eun Tak wishes her a farewell and cries at the loss of her mother.
Eun Tak leaves and comes face-to -face with Wang Yeo. She asks who he is. He’s surprised that she can see him. She remembers what he mother says and she turns to head in. He mentions that she has her scarf on. The old woman comes to her rescue and reminds him that 9 years prior she had no name, and since she now has a name he must have a certificate with her name on it. He leaves them and the old woman warns her that she must move as to hide from him. She is left alone to head to the funeral.
Fast forward 10 years, Yoo Duk Hwa (Yook Sun Jae) passes Kim Sun (Yoo In Na) on the street and invites her out for drinks.
Kim Shin is sitting at home reading when he gets a phone call from Duk Hwa about his card not working and he ignores the call.
Eun Tak (Kim Go Eun) is sitting in the cafeteria alone, while the girls of her age talk poorly about her and her abilities and wonders why she acts as if she can’t hear them. She’s walking home when a ghost is bothering her about not paying attention to her. Finally, she screams which scares Eun Tak. She tells her that she knew she could see her but when she looks ahead she apologises and runs away. This leaves a very confuses Eun Tak.
She starts to walks again and Kim Shin is walking towards her. The cross paths and though their eyes meet Eun Tak just walks on by. Kim Shin has a few glances of memories and looks back at her after a quick thought.
Kim Shin sits at home and his butler gives him the file. It contains his new identity. He is advised that he has pulled strings so that he could leave at the end of the month. He asks if it’s really that last time that he’ll see him in his lifetime. Kim Shin thanks him for all the time that he’s spent with him. Just then Duk Hwa comes in. He starts yelling at Kim Shin and his grandfather tells him that he’s the one who cancelled his card. Duk Hwa notices the file on the table and inquires as to when he was leaving. Kim Shin stays silent during the ideal.
Eun Tak wakes up in the morning and makes breakfast for her aunt and family. They wonder why there is seaweed soup and it turns out to be her birthday. She heads out to school and her auth tells her that she should come to the bank with her bank book. Eun Tak reminds her that she has no bank book. He aunt throws a rice bowl at her and asks about the insurance money. Eun Tak reminds her that she has no idea what happened to the money because she took it all for herself. Her aunt accuses her of taking the bank book whenever she needs to go to the bank. Her cousin says that it’s probably possessed and Right before leaving Eun Tak tells her cousin that there is a ghost behind her.
Eun Tak sits alone at the ocean’s edge with a cake. Meanwhile, Kim Shin is sitting alone in the field of flowers where he died.
His butler asks if he’s going to be travelling alone, and Kim Shin admits that it looks that way. Though the butler wants Kim Shin to find his bride soon, he also doesn’t want him to leave. He puts it up to human greed. Kim Shin tells him that, at least for that day, he wants to live and enjoy his company.
Kim Shin is holding a bouquet of buckwheat flowers in his hand. Eun Tak wishes on her birthday candles for a job, for someone to do something about her family and to help her get a boyfriend. She blows out the candles and complains about the weather. Kim Shin calls to her and she spins around. She believes that he’s a ghost at first but he tries to tell her that he’s not. She assures him that everyone says that. She asks why he’s holding a bouquet of flowers, she tells him that they don’t suit him. He hands them to her and she asks what the meaning of barley flowers are and he tells her lover. He tells her to say goodbye to her family since she won’t see her for a while, she should continue looking for a job in a chicken place because she’ll find something soon. He disappears and she asks about a boyfriend.
Kim Shin comes back home smiling but it quickly fades when he notices Wang Yeo. They both mentions that they haven’t met, but Wang Yeo mentions that he’s heard about him. Kim Shin admits that there are a lot of stories about him. Duk Hwa comes in and mentions that they could make some money if they rented the house out while he’s gone. Kim Shin wants Wang Yeo gone because he’s the grim reaper. Wang Yeo mentions that he’s already paid and signed the contract. Kim Shin welcomes him to stay after a threat to take Duk Hwa instead. Kim Shin bids him good luck of being able to kick him off f his territory.
That evening they have a not so nice dinner. Wang Yeo throws pepper into Kim Shin’s water, and Kim Shin throws chilly powder into his soup. Meanwhile, Eun Tak is working on her homework and she thinks about the meaning of the flowers.
Eun Tak goes around town and continues to search for a job at chicken places like Kim Shin tells her to with no avail. She gets frustrated and goes to drink some water. A passerby throws a cigarette in the trash and she blows it out. This summons Kim Shin again and he’s confused. She remains adamant that she didn’t call him not putting 1 and 1 together. She asks if he’s really a guardian angel and he stays quiet. She asks for more information but he stays quiet. She asks about what he sees and he admits that she’s pretty but plays it off as it being the uniform that’s pretty. When she starts joking around about being a fairy he vanishes again.
Eun Tak is in church when she has an idea and she lights a candle. When she blows it out Kim Shin is summoned. She tells him that she’s figured it out. He asks if she couldn’t have brought him to a nicer place. When he starts to walk towards the door. She asks why he’s not disappearing and he tells her that the church is a dead zone to him. He tells her not to follow but she keeps asking about her wishes not coming true and he tells her to wait.
Eun Tak is sitting in the library and blows out a candle on her phone. He appears but she didn’t think that it would work. He turns to leave but she grasps his arm and her hands are encased with blue flames. He can’t believe that she’s latched on to him but she soon has to let go because his flame is too hot.
He reminds her that blue flame is the hottest flame in contrary to her cold flame theory. He tells her to go back to studying and she tries to attest that she’s at the top of her class. She asks if he can give her money but he tells her that he’s busy. She only then notices that his clothes are quite fancy. He tells her that it’s a friend’s death anniversary the following day and when she asks a tonne of question about when he’s returning, he tells her to simply asks her question. She asks if he’s a Goblin. He asks who she is and she admits that it sounds really odd but she’s the Goblin’s bride. She tells him about her ability to see spirits and shows him the birthmark on her neck. He places her as the woman’s daughter. He asks her to prove it and she doesn’t know how. He asks what she sees when she looks at him. She starts to describe him but she can’t see the sword. He tells her that he’s not a goblin and she’s not the goblin’s bride.
Kim Shin opens a door and she follows him through it. This stuns her and him at the same time. He doesn’t know how she did it and she tells him that she simply followed him. She asks where they are and when he tells her Canada, she freaks out. (This was shot in Quebec City, the capital city of the Quebec Province. A.K.A where I’m from… well I’m 2 hrs south of there.) She runs down the street and up so stairs. She asks if he has the power to travel and he tells her that she apparently does too. She tells him that she’s made up her mind. When he asks her about what, she tells him that she’s going to marry him because she’s certain he’s a goblin. She tells him that he loves her and he looks shocked.
I hope next episode we get to see more in Quebec, but I may be a little bias.

The Couch Potato : Goblin (K-Drama,2016-17) – Ep 1-4 recap
Hello and welcome back to another TV series deep dive where our series in question is the hit series “Goblin : The Lonely and Great God”! It’s obvious what this post is about, so enough intro, let’s get into it. Also for more on entertainment from South Korea, check out It’s called Hallyu! Now let’s start the recap. I will try to keep it to-the-point as much as possible, and as always my commentary will be in bold italics.
Episode 1
A seemingly old grandma who is selling her wares on the street recounts the story of the Goblin (about his immortality and how he can only be saved from that fate by the Goblin’s bride)- and how spirits can be stuck in articles that contains the bloods of thousands. Cue the bloody sword. The customer laughs at the idea of a god like Goblin existing in this modern day as our attention is focused on a jade ring (I bet everything that the jade ring is the key to the story here). The old grandma who I think is a mystical being herself tells the young woman to pray earnestly if in a life-or-death situation so that a helpful God will save her.
Cue the year 1968 in Paris, as we meet our helpful and kind hearted God help a small kid from his parents and even give an answer to his math test.
The narration starts to describe the friendly God as such –
“He is water, fire, and wind, and also light and dark. And once, he was human.” Episode 1, The Goblin.
And thus, the flashback starts –
The Goblin as General Kim Shin, the General of the Goryeo dynasty
The Goblin we know of is General Kim Shin of the Goryeo dynasty. He returns after a victorious war much to the happiness of the people. But as he steps into the palace court he is asked to take off his armour and is labelled a traitor, which is essentially a frame up. Unable to beleive this treachery he asks to see the King. The young King and Queen arrive and we see that the King’s mind is poisoned with jealousy by the eunuch who whispers that Kim Shin is more revered by the people than the King.
The King filled with jealousy warns that Kim Shin’s loved ones will be killed if he takes a step further. The young Queen tells Kim Shin she is ready for anything. As Kim Shin walks forward, the Queen is shot down. Looks like that’s his sister.
Knowing his end is near, Kim Shin asks his trusted right hand soldier to thrust his sword into his chest and kill him. The soldier does so and Kim Shin watches his sister die as the blood stains the green jade ring we saw with the grandma in yhe beginning. I told you it was important. Kim Shin’s body is ordered to be left out in the open and the people mourn in the distance. The narration mentions how there were no God’s to protect him.
The scene then shifts to Seoul, 1998.
The Grim Reaper
We are introduced the Grim Reaper collecting the soul of a woman who died an accident. She is taken to a room and given a cup of tea to forget her life on Earth and ascend to the heavens. The woman asks what happens if she doesn’t drink the tea to which the Grim Reaper says that regret will be upon her. A brief scene shows that The Goblin and The Grim Reaper, both mythical beings are able to see each other as well although invisible to mortal eyes.
Meanwhile another flashback to the Koryeo era shows a dying Shin and an ailing grandpa and his grandchild next to him. The grandpa prays to the heavens and to the sword and a sudden swirl of energy ressurects Kim Shin to The Goblin. The heavens declare that although he’s been brought back to life, his sword contains the blood of thousands for which he must be punished with immortality that only the bride of the Goblin can end. The grandpa diea and the little boy dedicates his life to serve the powerful Goblin.
Back to the year 1998, the woman the grandma talked with meets with an accident and desperate for help prays to the Gods. The Goblin turns up and hears her pleas to save her baby, but the kind hearted Goblin saves both of them. The Grim reaper who comes to the scene sees that a woman and an unborn child who was supposed to be dead is missing.
A while later the baby is born and the ghosts swarm around and exclaim “The Goblin’s bride is born!”
As the baby, Ji Eun Tak grows, we realise she can see ghosts. Finally on her birthday her mother’s ghost visits her and asks her to be brave when the hospital calls. Her mother’s spirit also requests to take care of herself and to not meet the eyes of ghosts and disappears. As she gets the call from the hospital and leaves, she bumps into the Grim Reaper who is intent on taking her soul. Grandma comes and saves Eun Tak saying she has a purpose in life and that the Grim Reaper’s card had an unnamed child not Eun Tak and therefore can’t take her. I wonder what this Grandma’s intent is behind all this. This is giving me the same vibes as the Grandma spirit in Hotel Del Luna.
Deok Hwa
We meet Deok Hwa who is the next person in the lineage of the young boy’s family to serve the Goblin next. Deok Hwa’s grandpa is making arrangements for the Goblin to go abroad as he seems to change places every twenty years or so due to his immortality. Deok Hwa’s grandpa says that the next time the Goblin is back he would be dead, and Deok Hwa would be there to serve him. Wow.
Eun Tak meanwhile lives with her abusive aunt and cousins and is desperate for freedom, at least a part time job and makes a wish on her birthday cake for the gods to help her. Her wishes echo and The Goblin is summoned to her side.
I have to admit the cinematography is so good
The Goblin asks why she summoned him, while Eun Tak firmly believes hes a ghost as she is used to many ghosts following her, most of them who follow her as she is “The Goblin’s bride”. Eventually he grants her a wish and says she will get a part time job at a chicken shop tomorrow and he leaves.
As Shin returns home he sees Deok Hwa has leased the home to the Grim Reaper thinking Shin won’t be here for another 20 years. HAHAHAHHAHAHA!
The two are not happy but end up becoming roommates using their powers to throw cutlery and pepper shakers at each other during dinner. These two are hilarious, I like how their relationship is going.
Eun Tak beleiving Shin tries to get many jobs but fails to do so. She accidentally blows a flame from a cigarette bud in a dustbin and Shin is summoned again. She later understands that he appears when she blows out a flame, and summons him again and grumbles that she didn’t get the job yet. Okay these two are adorable too.
Eun Tak keeps testing her Goblin summoning powers much to Shin’s annoyance. She finally proclaims herself sas “The Goblin’s Bride” as that’s what all the ghosts told her and shows her unique birth mark to him. Bewildered the Goblin asks her to describe him (to see if she can see the sword thrust in him) , and describes everything but the sword.
Shin leaves saying she isn’t the real Goblin’s bride and walks out a door to another country, only to his shock, to be followed by Eun Tak.
Shook.
The episode ends with the Goblin shocked as Eun Tak smiles at her and says – “I think your the Goblin, I love you, and I’ll marry you!” HAHAHA! I love her spontaneous nature, it’s such an endearing character trait despite being a person who faced many struggles in life.
Episode 2
Our shocked Goblin Shin now has to deal with an excited Eun Tak whose busy running around Canada. He seems interested but acts like he isn’t and denies flat out he’s a Goblin too.
Catching the maple leaf as it falls
Back in Seoul our reaper receives a report of a missing person from the Grim Reaper’s list and mentions that it’s the will of the Gods or what humans call “miracle” by which this happens. He then takes a couple who died to the tea room. He gives the woman a cup of tea but denies the man one as he deserves to remember the sins he did and regret it as he is pulled apart in hell. So is this upto the discretion of the grim reaper? Who the team must be given to?
Meanwhile we catch a glimpse of Shin amongst many headstones in the city of Quebec all of the people who served from the family of the little boy who did so, centuries ago. He reminisces the agony of living this immortal life and losing the people he loves and has tried to remove the sword and kill himself many times to no avail. Does he really deserve such a harsh punishment? So every war general is a Goblin or something?
Back home, Shin tries teleporting with Reaper and fails and wonders how the girl did it and Reaper couldn’t which ends up annoying the Reaper that he can’t do something and make sure to stick “close” to Shin from now on. Hahhaha these two!
His curiosity gets the best of him and he ends up meeting her when she didn’t even summon him, as she was distraught after her family harassed her. Looks like the two of them are bonding slowly.
Sunny
Eun Tak finally lands her part time job at Sunny’s chicken restaurant. Sunny seems to be in a daze and just hires her after asking some random questions and talking to herself. Happily, Eun Tak summons the Goblin to thank him and he appears with a steak in his mouth. Hahahhaha! I know these scenes aren’t central to the plot but I can’t help including them, it’s so funny! Wanting to look cool the next time he is summoned he asks Grim Reaper for suggestions on clothing and accessories to which he gives half hearted responses. The Goblin got his revenge though, Grim Reaper wakes up the next day with a floral blanket instead of his pristine white one and a baby’s cap too! But I have to admit Lee Dong Wook still looks amazing!
HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAAH
The Reaper gets his revenge though by singing a children’s song about the smelly underwear of a Goblin which seems to torment Shin a lot! Hahahhaha these two are epic!
Coming back to the story, Eun Tak has preserved the maple leaf as a gift to thnak Shin for letting her get a job when Reaper arrives and states that he has finally found her. Surprisingly Shin appears and tells that the Reaper can’t harm her as she is the Goblin’s bride. As the Reaper leaves Eun Tak wonders whether he has finally accepted her as his bride and he said there’s something special about you, but you aren’t the bride as you can’t see a special something about me you are supposed to see and leaves.
Shin is moody after that though and even follows Reaper to Eun Tak’s home but she isn’t there.
Eun Tak meanwhile has decided to stay at the chicken shop so she can be away from her aunt and have peace. She decides to find a ghost who called her a “goblins bride” before and finds out about how Shin had saved her pregnant mother all those years ago.
We find out the reason her aunt is looking for her desperately is because she needs Eun Tak’s insurance payout to pay some loan sharks. The goons are ahead of her and kidnap and threaten Eun Tak. Scared Eun Tak tries to blow on the cigarette lighter but misses. As the man is about to hit her, the Goblin birthmark on her neck glows and Shin senses something amiss. Eun Tak is in tears and is scared when suddenly the streetlights burst one by one and two men come waking towards the car – it’s Shin and Reaper here to save Eun Tak. Now that looks amazing and the scene in itself is so cool too! I mean just look at it!
I have to say this again, the cinematography is amazing
Episode 3
Shin and the reaper use their abilities and save the day, well Eun Tak. Eun Tak is a little shocked but soon comes back to her usual self and thanks Shin for saving her long back with her mother, and now, and promises to let him live in peace and not summon him unnecessarily. She also hopes he finds the bride he’s looking for too. Back at home he finds out that Eun Tak received a huge payment from her mother’s insurance which she can’t use as she is a minor, which is why her aunt keeps her around. He gives the aunt and her two kids, two gold bars as a punishment and watch as they squabble over it not trusting each other. That’s such a nice way to punish them, give them exactly what they want but see them suffer with it!
At this point it’s revealed that Shin is looking for the reincarnation of the young King who punished him and that the Reaper can see the past lives of people if he touches them. Also, the reaper has no collection of his past life and doings either. We get all this information as the reaper and Shin have a conversation about the young King being reincarnated.
As the episode progresses Eun Tak and Shin act like they’re not thinking about each other, but in reality they are. I mean, of course. Sunny, the chicken shop owner finds out that Eun Tak has been sleeping at the chicken shop but takes it kindly. A promising bond between Eun Tak and Sunny!
Shin tries his best to know if Eun Tak can see the sword or not, but to no avail and the two separate. Meanwhile Deok Hwa seems to be knowing that the man he rented to is a Reaper because of the way he casually teleports and does godly things around the house. I swear Deok Hwa is the perfect character to complement the reaper and Shin. We also get another tidbit of information about Grim Reapers – in order for one to become a reaper he or she ought to have committed a very grave sin in their lives that they atone for by working centuries as a reaper. Could reaper be the young King? Or is that just too dramatic and obvious and we have something more to see about the past?
And it looks like Shin still follows the reaper to make sure he doesn’t harm Eun Tak, although reaper claims that he’s on Eun Tak’s side and wants her to see and pull out the sword as it’s bettee than the reaper leaving the country. Meanwhile Eun Tak packs and leaves her aunt’s home, which is also empty as they are fighting and stealing the gold bars from each other.
Reaper is stopped and blinded by the glare from a mirror by the grandma as she presents the vital Jade Ring at him. As he is about to pick it up, Sunny picks it up and he stares at her dumbfounded as a tear falls. Sunny thinks he’s crying because he didn’t get the ring and says she will give it to him if he gives his phone number and introduces herself. Reaper says he doesn’t have a number and avoids a hand shake. He however manages to get the ring. As the Grandma asks for the money for the ring her voiceover states that both of them will pay even bigger prices as time passes by. Something is up.
The next scene shows Shin staring and crying at the picture of his sister, who was the Queen then. Okay I get it. Reaper is the king and Sunny is the reincarnation of his sister. The scene flashes make it obvious.
We see the Goblin teleport himself many places trying to find Eun Tak. He finally does and apologises for the rain because it rains when he becomes depressed. As they talk, the rain clouds disperse and Shin says it’s because he is becoming happier. This cutie, Shin. Shin says he is leaving finally, says his goodbyes and leaves.
Back at home, Shin is depressed and so is Reaper as he is hanging onto a tissue paper with Sunny’s number. Sunny is meanwhile going crazy that he hasn’t called yet either, wondering if her looks are decreasing. Haha typical godly dating problems.
The door bell rings and both Shin and Reaper are scared as no one has used the door bell in centuries. They’re gods, but they’re so scared. They open the door to find Eun Tak who found the goblins address by asking some nearby ghosts. She says if she can see what she is supposed to see, does she have to marry immediately, can she get 5 million won and can Shin not leave? Shin says that’s not the point, she can’t see it anyways. And Eun Tak points directly at the sword as it materialises and says she can see the sword stuck through his heart. Wow. I mean we all knew she could see it, and woukd reveal it soon, but I liked the way they decided to do the reveal in typical spontaneous Eun Tak style!
Episode 4
Aaaannndd she can see the sword, everyone!
Although Shin was looking for his bride to end his immortality all along now that he has actually met her he seems too shocked for words. Eun Tak walks in and asks to move into Shin’s home due to her unfortunate circumstances and ends up at a hotel suite room arranged by Deok Hwa’s grandfather whose the chairman. The Chairman realising the importance of Eun Tak hands her a credit card, his and Deok Hwa’s services as well.
Shin’s emotions are on a hilarious rollercoaster as he hasn’t come to terms to actually finding the goblins bride. Deok Hwa meanwhile shows up at Eun Tak’s school and makes a huge show with a fancy car all the while his grandfather’s secretary is spying on him. Meanwhile Reaper still wonders about Sunny and why he reacted so, and waits at the bridge hoping to run into her again. I thought he had her number? Maybe he’s too ancient to use a phone or something.
Meanwhile elsewhere an old man dies, and Shin is shown getting ready for attending a funeral.
The old man is apparently the young boy Shin helped in Paris years ago, who later became a lawyer and helped many people I need. After they have a conversation, the boy climbs up the stairs to heaven.
At that exact moment, Eun Tak summons Shin frustrated that he is avoiding her.
He eventually agrees to have dinner with her and eventually ends up in a drunk haze telling Eun Tak she is the first and last bride for him amongst many other cheesy actions that he did when he was drunk. They also talk about pulling out his sword and what happens after that, but he doesn’t reveal all the details to her either. The next day, his mood seems to be good as flowers have bloomed EVERYWHERE, I like how his mood resonates with nature and the weather. Back at home though, Shin is in a huge hangover.
After having breakfast, Shin finally starts getting his memory back in parts and is shocked and embarrassed by his actions with Eun Tak the day before. It was so cute a hilarious at the same time, the scene at the restaurant!
Meanwhile Sunny is upset that Reaper hasn’t called yet as she has never undergone such an experience before. Meanwhile Reaper seems to be seeing Sunny’s face in every person on the street. Oh just call her already!
Shin takes Eun Tak on a Quebec date again and the two bond, although they don’t broach on what happens when the sword is pulled. He does reveal his age and such too. As Eun Tak is playing around he notices a poem that she has transcribed and thinks back to the incident a 1000 years ago and watches Eun Tak running towards him. Aahhh the blossoming of love in beautiful cinematography! The poem is as follows – (so you get the geist of the mode you know)

Episode 1-13 Summary
This is a new kdrama that I have been completely OBSESSED with. I watched this in 3 days! Bad for my eyes, good for my heart (well, kinda..). Summary: Is it better to live forever or to finally be able to die? Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) is a decorated military general during the Goryeo Dynasty who is betrayed by the jealous king he served. When Kim Shin is faced with death instead of honor after fighting a mighty battle, God turns Kim Shin into a goblin instead, tasked with protecting certain people from a life of misery. But immortality is wearing on Kim Shin, and he longs to find the prophesied human bride who can set his soul free. Kim Shin becomes accidental roommates with Wang Yeo (Lee Dong Wook), the grim reaper who ushers people’s souls into the afterlife. Kim Shin’s nephew, Yoo Deok Hwa (Yook Sungjae), is a rebellious chaebol heir whose family has been caretakers of the goblin for many generations. Ji Eun Tak (Kim Go Eun) is a high school senior whose mother was saved from an accident by Kim Shin 19 years ago, and ever since then she has been able to communicate with dead people. Sunny (Yoo In Na), the owner of a chicken restaurant and Eun Tak’s boss, crosses paths with Wang Yeo and becomes smitten with him. Can Eun Tak be the true “goblin bride” with the power to release Kim Shin from his eternal misery?
This is essentially the very basics of this complicated drama. If you like that preview, you should definitely watch it. If you don’t… you know what? STILL Watch it! It is AMAZING! **Spoilers: Let’s take a look at the true identities of these characters. -Kim Shin: the Goblin, basically a warrior that won many battles and won the heart of the townspeople, as well as the immense jealousy of the young king; The young king killed the warrior. However, an unknown ‘God’, which can be suspected as Yoo Deok Hwa, who is Kim Shin’s future nephew, revives him and gives him a punishment of powers and immortality (a punishment for those who Kim Shin has killed in battle). At first, Kim Shin thinks this as a blessing, rather than a punishment, but seeing his close ones die one by one reveal this punishment to be torturing. And so, he yearns for the day that he is killed, which can only be done, as said by the ‘God’, by the ‘Goblin’s Bride’ who is given the task of pulling the sword out of the goblin and basically killing him. The Goblin’s bride shows up around 900 hundred years later, the modern day. -Ji Eun Tak: Eun Tak started with the moment that her mother was killed by a car. Her mother did, I would say, actually die. However, the goblin, who has now at this time lived around 900 years, used his powers to revive the mother, who was pregnant with Ji Eun Tak. A few years later when Eun Tak is turning 10 years old, the mother dies and Eun Tak is then given to her aunt. Around this time, Eun Tak meets a grim reaper, which will be discussed with the character Wang Yeo. The aunt mistreats Eun Tak, but keeps her in order to take her mother’s insurance money. Later, when Eun Tak is almost 20, as the story goes on, the Goblin, who builds a romantic relationship with Eun Tak, gets rid of the aunt and her family (because them abusing Eun Tak). Eun Tak is then revealed as the Goblin’s bride, and is given the important task of taking the sword out of the Goblin, and therefore, killing him and freeing him of the punishment. It is also important to take notice of the fact that Eun Tak can see ghosts and other nonhumans. FYI, Eun Tak is also a smart and caring student, which can be seen throughout the drama. -Grim Reaper/ Wang Yeo- Wang Yeo is the king that the goblin was serving. He was a man of jealousy and bad leadership. However, these faults can be seen as the result of a controlling man who ordered Wang yeo to do what he wanted, as well as the fact that Wang Yeo was given the heavy burden of a king at a young age. He also did not have the necessary factor of family love. At the last battle of the war, he orders Kim shin, later to be known as the Grim Reaper, to go into an unlikely-to-be-won-battle and fight, but to never come back, as the king was jealous of Kim Shin for the love he has received from the people and the trust his [Wang Yeo] dead father had given Kim Shin. However, Kim Shin won the battle and came back, which resulted in the growing of Wang Yeo’s hatred and jealousy, ultimately causing Wang Yeo to threaten Kim Shin that he would kill everyone if he moved another step. And so, Wang Yeo did as he promised when Kim Shin crossed the line and took another step. Modern day, Wang yeo has reincarnated as a Grim Reaper. Grim Reapers are nonhumans that gather dead people and send them to the afterlife. A condition to become a grim reaper is that they must have done terrible things in their past life, which is what Wang yeo had done. And one of the jobs the Grim reaper had was to gather Eun Tak’s mother. But with the Goblin saving them, they became wandering souls. And so, every year that Eun Tak is close to a perfect age (10,20,30,etc.), the Grim reaper will come and try to take the souls away and put them in their rightful place, the afterlife (because they were meant to be dead). However, when Eun Tak was 9 years old, the deity ( a woman who is an old grandma at the beginning of the movie, but later turns into a beautiful, young woman in red) saved her. At age 19, Eun Tak was ultimately saved by the Goblin, as their relationship grows stronger. – Sunny- Kim Sun hee- In the last life, Kim sun hee was kim shin’s brother, and then Wang yeo’s wife (because of the request of the late king who had deeply trusted Kim Shin). She reincarnated with the same name, but with the nickname, Sunny. The Grim reaper and sunny form a romantic, but unsteady relationship. In the latest ep, or ep 13, they seem to break off (but later episodes may allow them to get back together). She also owns a chicken restaurant that barely gets any customers. Eun Tak eventually becomes her part timer. In the later episodes, Kim Shin and the grim reaper finds out about Sunny’s past life, and tells her about it; and so, kim shin and sunny reunites. Wonderful, right? No. You’ll cry on the 12th and 13th episode; I assure you. **** If there are any questions or character you would like me to cover, please tell me! Comment as well.
*** Now, for ep 13. Summary: The Grim reaper, the Goblin, and Sunny realizes their intertwined relationship. Obviously, the goblin and the grim reaper doesn’t end up having a great reunion, but they eventually forgive each other and move on. Meanwhile, Eun Tak, who is given the job of killing the Goblin, is more and more prone to death as her duty/job/destiny remains unfulfilled (because of her reluctance to kill her hubby (lol), the goblin). Another thing to mention is that a new character is recently revealed, which is the evil advisor who controlled Wang Yeo, or later reincarnated as the Grim reaper. The evil advisor, who has escaped from the afterlife and is a ghost with immense power, yearns to kill the goblin because he destroyed his plan of controlling the king. At the end of episode 13, the grim reaper, the goblin, and Eun tak are on a roof, fighting the evil advisor who is in the form of a ghost. The only way for the ghost to be killed is for the sword to be pulled out of the goblin ( and use the sword to kill the advisor). And so, The goblin forces Eun Tak to take out the sword. The goblin kills the advisor (finally!), but then is left to die. Eun tak and the goblin has their last (or not; we’ll see in the last few episodes) moments together. And btw, if you couldn’t infer, eun tak is crying and the grim reaper is on the sideline watching their lovely moment, shedding a few tears as well. And so, the 13 th episode finally ends.

Overall themes (four episodes)
C O L O R S RED: Red is the color of extremes. Episode 1 we see how bloody Shin’s past was due to the betrayal of the king. His life and those he loved perished under the king’s command due to the insecurity of the king (his adviser planted heavy seed of doubt and mistrust about Shin trying to take the throne-since Shin was a great general). Hence, this color signifies betrayal, sadness, anger, violence, rage, vengeance and death. However, it also symbolizes power, confidence, courage, will power and action. The queen encouraged Shin to approach the king without fear when the king reproached him from advancing towards him or his loved ones die in front of him. But, she took responsibility of her life. We still do not know her relation to Shin, but it was a sign of strength from both ends since they defiled authority. Therefore, we can also say that red signifies life; the will to survive, strength and leadership. It keeps us alive and gives us the energy to do the involuntary. In hindsight, it is what gives Shin and the throne a legacy (good and bad) that will be reincarnated into the present. In the same episode, we see another display of red and its different meaning. Eun tak’s mother was a victim of a hit and run on a snowy day and her red blood seeped through the snow. But it was her sincere desire for her daughter to live that got Shin to take compassion towards her. Also, Eun tak’s mother frequently wore bright, tomato red scarf (though, the weather was mostly cold whenever we saw her) and that scarf is passed down to Eun tak. So, red means memory, assertiveness, passion and innocence. This is one of many qualities Eun tak display from episode 1 to episode 4. Another association is the maple leave Eun tak and Shin got from their impromptu portal trip to Canada. Eun tak relays the story of the maple leaf (catching the leaf in front of a person means the person will fall in love with you). Hence, red is an intense color that is filled with emotion ranging from passionate to intense love (a display of emotion that is already in hindsight with these characters). The old shaman lady also wore red, but a softer berry red in earlier scenes. However, when she materializes into a hot 20 something shaman, it red became hot and fiery. Hence, this color red means lust, excitement with her change, but it also tells us to watch out from danger . We’ve to be cautious because it seems that she has powers and is one of the deities that could change the destiny of the goblin and the reaper. Or she is a nameless soul the reaper is yet to find. She manipulates/interfere with natural events that takes place. GREEN: The ring the queen wore before her death was the same ring the shaman had when she told Eun tak’s mother the story of the general and his unfortunate life in episode 1. The same ring appears in episode 3 which gave us a funny encounter between Sunny and the Reaper. In addition, the cabbage (episode 1) and spinach (episode 3) given to Eun tak by the shaman meant survival and compassion. Again, why is she looking out for Eun tak or Shin, since Eun tak is supposedly the goblin’s wife (think about the it!) Green also symbolizes life, renewal, new growth, rebirth and energy. It is passed down from time to time under the hands of the shaman from the queen. So, it “reincarnates” itself to the rightful owner. Again, we do not know who the queen was to Shin. So, we do not know what that ring means; was it a family ring if she was related to Shin by blood or a promise ring, a betrothed ring from Shin to the queen. So, what does it mean now in the present? In episode 1, Shin gave Eun tak Buckwheat flower when she wished for three birthday presents- money, boyfriend and a job. Shin told her that the flower means lover. So, green symbolizes lack of experience and need for growth. Two characteristics that Eun tak and Shin’s arch need in order to become that lover/ companion they both desperately need. GREY/BLACK: The opening scene was grey and filled with cool hues that were somber and lifeless. Grey is a cool, neutral and balanced color. It is emotionless, but filled with formal and sophisticated aura. It is timeless, but at the same time, it is filled with strength and a hint of black signifies mystery. It causes unsettling feelings and it is often associated with depression/anxiety. Episode 1 and 3 were prime example of the excessiveness of grey which were more frequent. Black on the other hand, is associated with fear, power, mystery, strength, authority, elegance, sophistication, sexy and death. Oh, I think the grim reaper already excudes all these features. Hehe. However, when the goblin wears black we tend to see sophistication, sexiness, yet, somber, sadness and emptiness.
Omg, I can go on about colors (white, brown) and what they symbolize, but I will spear you guys and move on to the second theme.
RULES –
Reincarnation is one of the themes that recur. Therefore, when colors come in play, let’s try to understand what their meaning in context because what happens in the past can reincarnate itself in the present, however, it depends on how the present is shaped in order to have a different future from the past. Yea, i’m trying to be philosophical with how reincarnation works in this drama and the restaurant scene with Eun tak and Shin in episode 4, where Shin manipulated the present of two random couples. Also, in episode 2, there was a mention of the king being reincarnated into a kpop star (boy or girl) or not, hehe. So, it seems that Shin is still not aware of how the rules apply, 936 years later. However, it seems that the shaman is aware of how the rules work, so who exactly is she?! Meddling Principles. So the goblin has lot of rules, but one of them is not to meddle in the life of mortals. Yet, there are two prime example of his interference that changed the outcome. One, is in relation to life. In France in the 1960s, Shin changed the course of a young boy in episode 1 who later died of old age in episode 4, but died with a fulfilled life as a lawyer who helped the unfortunate. This is one of the instance of Shin’s proud moment of interfering in the life of humans, though, he does regret trying to interfere in most instance because humans want more “miraculous” moments rather than taking advantage of the first “miracle.” It is tedious and tiring and it makes sense. On the other hand, he saved the life of Eun tak when her then pregnant mom was a victim of a hit and run. He was feeling generous that evening and the repercussion of his “miracle” is what he is encountering in the present with 19 year old Eun tak. Grim reaper and shaman also meddle in the life of mortals. For the grim reaper, his is part of a job description, well until he lost two souls that needs to be accounted for (Eun tak and someone else and my bet is that the shaman is the other person). So, he needs to find them and take responsibility. However, the shaman, it is still unclear why she’s meddling. Again, who is she?! It was kind of explained about the rules of sleeping, eating, acting as a human in episode 3 when Grim had a lunch drink with his colleague, but it is hilarious to see gods act like humans on earth, drunk Shin is funny (episode 3), but hangover Shin is the best (episode 4) Haha. But it makes their story relatable and we feel more connected to their unfortunate present life.
I would love to know more about Sunny and the reaper which I am sure the show will explain sooner than later.
And as the rules, as they happen, it is sometimes explained in the episode it occurred. For example, in episode 4, we finally get to understand how Shin is able to “pull” out the sword, which he used in episode 2 to cut the car into two when Eun tak was kidnapped. in episode 4, water was manifested into a sword. Hence, the sword is a manifestation of a nearby object + willpower. Hopefully, the rules doesn’t get too complicated or too simple to be fickle. It needs to be coherent to make this fantasy world more realistic.
