130) Good Original US Army Korean War Cap, Field, Pile M-1951
Description
130) A good original US army M-1951 cold weather cap as issued during the Korean war. It is in excellent clean condition with no damage. The labels show dirt and wear so not the clearest. The date looks to be 1951 but very hard to be totally sure? these were worn with the peak folded up (occasionally badges were added) or down. The same goes for the side flaps. It is a size 6 ¾.

A pile cap intended for issue in cold weather to men requiring head movement and peripheral vision where a parka hood would inhibit such movement. The cap is equipped with ear flaps, face protector, rear wind flap, and visor, all of which can be retracted when not needed. This design allows the cap to be worn comfortably in a variety of cold weather conditions. The face opening can be sealed by tightening the integral drawstring. The cap was worn with a variety of USMC winter service and field uniforms. It was often issued with the pile lined vest. Adopted: 1943. Centralized contracting through The Quartermaster General of the Marine Corps, U.S.M.C. Washington, D.C. Unknown.

This cap is unmistakable in appearance. The combination of features it has makes it instantly recognizable. Exterior Fabrics :
Cotton Poplin (light green): Outer shell.
Alpaca Pile (dark brown): Inside of ear flaps, face protector, and bottom of visor.
Silesia (forest green): Lining for inside of crown. Buttons (6 total) : 3 x each side of the ear flaps for securing the face protector and wind flap. Pressure Snaps (2 sets) :
Attached to visor and front of cap to secure visor in up position.
Tie-Downs (1 set) :
Each side of ear flaps.
Drawstrings (1 set) :
Each side of ear flaps to cinch face opening. Contractor Label : As of this writing no contractor labels have been noted on this variant.
Size Label : As of this writing no size labels have been noted on this variant. There was at least one variant that is presumed to be an earlier version. It is distinguished from the cap shown above by having the three buttons on the side of the cap arranged in a straight vertical row instead of in a triangular pattern. In addition, the inside of the crown lacked the dark green silesia lining and instead consisted of only exposed blanket wool. These caps also had cloth size labels on the inside crown.
