The Beautiful Struggle – Chapter 2 Summary & Analysis

Summary

Coates writes that civilization declined when crack hit Baltimore. In Paul’s era crimes were bopping someone over the head or spitting at someone’s little sister. There were gangs but they were infrequent as were murders. The world was filled with noble causes like Mandela and the battle against Reagan. Ta-Nehisi writes that he and his friends were interested in sneakers and leather jackets amid the volume of guns that flooded into the community. Paul made sure the boys had music lessons and went to science camp.

When Big Bill was in the tenth grade, the year after the incident after the wrestling match, Paul put him in Upward Bound. According to Coates, Bill saw himself as an athlete or rapper. He didn’t value his intellect – but Paul did. At Upward Bound, the kids were exposed to philosophy and physics and…

Ta-Nehisi and his brother Bill were confronted by gang members at a professional wrestling match. After being ambushed by the gang, the boys both ran. Ta-Nehisi called his father to pick him up.

Ta-Nehisi’s favorite wrestling star was the American Dream. Coates describes how he and Bill would watch as the Dream was tied to the ropes and beaten until his blond hair was bloody red.

Coates writes that the boys wanted to see the Dream in person but Paul, Ta-Nehisi’s father, would have to approve. Although Paul worked seven days a week, his presence always loomed in the form of the strict rules for behavior that he laid out along with a long list of chores. The boys…

The Beautiful Struggle

An exceptional father-son story from the National Book Award–winning author of Between the World and Me about the reality that tests us, the myths that sustain us, and the love that saves us.

Paul Coates was an enigmatic god to his sons: a Vietnam vet who rolled with the Black Panthers, an old-school disciplinarian and new-age believer in free love, an autodidact who launched a publishing company in his basement dedicated to telling the true history of African civilization. Most of all, he was a wily tactician whose mission was to carry his sons across the shoals of inner-city adolescence—and through the collapsing civilization of Baltimore in the Age of Crack—and into the safe arms of Howard University, where he worked so his children could attend for free.

Among his brood of seven, his main challenges were Ta-Nehisi, spacey and sensitive and almost comically miscalibrated for his environment, and Big Bill, charismatic and all-too-ready for the challenges of the streets. The Beautiful Struggle follows their divergent paths through this turbulent period, and their father’s steadfast efforts—assisted by mothers, teachers, and a body of myths, histories, and rituals conjured from the past to meet the needs of a troubled present—to keep them whole in a world that seemed bent on their destruction.

With a remarkable ability to reimagine both the lost world of his father’s generation and the terrors and wonders of his own youth, Coates offers readers a small and beautiful epic about boys trying to become men in black America and beyond.

Praise for The Beautiful Struggle

“I grew up in a Maryland that lay years, miles and worlds away from the one whose summers and sorrows Ta-Nehisi Coates evokes in this memoir with such tenderness and science; and the greatest proof of the power of this work is the way that, reading it, I felt that time, distance and barriers of race and class meant nothing. That in telling his story he was telling my own story, for me. —Michael Chabon, bestselling author of The Yiddish Policemen’ s Union and The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay

“Ta-Nehisi Coates is the young James Joyce of the hip hop generation.“ —Walter Mosley

Character Analysis: The Beautiful Struggle – 1316 Words

The Beautiful Struggle is about the personal experience of Ta-Nehisi Coates and his brother Bill growing up in West Baltimore. The book takes place in 1980s Baltimore during the Crack Epidemic and explores issues of survival, morals and family. The book is a coming of age story that looks at multiple perspectives. Ta-Nehisi is a boy who isn’t cool, doesn’t understand the rules of the street, and generally doesn’t apply himself in school. His brother Bill on the other hand, is known for being cool, charismatic, and street smart. Bill does not apply himself much in school but strives to join a gang. Each boy goes through struggles as they age however their choices are not the same. Ta-Nehisi eventually gets expelled from one of his schools but

Ta-Nehisi’s brother Bill in particular was most at risk. Despite the dangers of being a part of a gang, Bill still had the desire to join one. His gang affiliation also put him at more of a risk to be apart of the raging drug epidemic. In addition, the lack of morals in the gangs put Bill at a greater risk of engaging in illegal

The Beautiful Struggle Chapter 2 Analysis

The Beautiful Struggle Chapter 2 Analysis

Throughout the entirety of the book, imagery is a core literary device used within the story especially in chapter two. Ta-hesi Coates uses imagery to enter readers into the world of the novel and specific moments that had a great impact on his life as a child and other characters as well. For instance, the quote “Saturday mornings, Upward Bound pulled Bill and a bevy of West Side kids up to the local community college to reinforce Pythagoras, Fitzgerald, and Newton…” depicts how life for Ta-hesi and Big Bill both spend their summers in Baltimore doing something educational and positive during times of the crack epidemic and inner city violence. While Coates’ imagery illustrates positive moments of him and the characters, there are also moments that depict the fears the characters face such as “It was night, and like all others, Big Bill, Joey, and Marlon were out on their home corner. There was the normal high that comes from the hormones of youth, that fresh sense of being unchained… And then it happened. Someone — no one ever remembers who — yelled, Yo, it’s them, coming across the tracks. There was no math. Bill just reached in his dip, and, like his friends, shot out in the appropriate direction.” This quote shows how even though Big Bill and our protagonist are surrounded by positivity by going to a college summer program, they are also surrounded by bad influences such as Joey and Marlon that cause characters like Big Bill to act a certain way around them to fit in. Coates uses a lot of flashbacks and memories to help the story develop. These flashbacks also help with the character development of his father. He opens the chapter with, “Dad told me how it used to be. In his time, the beefs were petty and stemmed from casual crimes: bopping too hard down an alien street, spitting game at somebody’s little sister.” This quote helps the readers see the difference between the Dad’s days of growing up in Baltimore versus the son’s. In Paul’s

(his dad) time, there were small crimes like trying to talk to someone’s sister and small gangs who were not violent, but during his time there were increases in crack and guns. His flashbacks help to show the reader how his mind and the way he thought about things changed throughout periods of time. Coates gained intellectual knowledge throughout his lifetime and his vivid detailing of certain past events help to portray this growth. “They told us to act civilized, but everywhere bordered on camage. To be strapped was to grab the steering wheel of our careening lives. A gun was a time machine and an anchor – it dictated events. To be strapped was to master yourself, to become more than a man whose life and death could be simply seized and hurled about.” (Coates 35) In this quote he uses ideology and symbolism. He mentions how they basically had to use a gun to elevate themselves in status, to seem “hard” so people wouldn’t mess with them. I believe this flashback helped readers to see how situations caused their way of thinking to change. Another literary device Coates uses in The Beautiful Struggle is diction to effectively tell the story to build style and tone in the story. In the Beautiful Struggle, Coates states, “In his time, the beefs were petty and stemmed from casual crimes: bopping too hard down an alien street, spitting game at somebody’s little sister,” showing the way Coates communicates to the readers (Coates 27). From the way Coates uses his choice of diction and vocabulary, it shows how many African-Americans speak from the Baltimore area. Coates’ diction also sets the tone in the story by emphasizing how crime from where he lives affected their way of living and interacting with the people around him, giving it a somewhat moody or depressing tone. In addition, by using his word choice, it also keeps the reader engaged by using figurative languages and using complex word choices to describe details of the environment or the behavior of the people in his neighborhood in Baltimore. Therefore, by using diction, the author is able to engage with the

The Beautiful Struggle Summary

A father, two sons and an unlikely road to manhood – it is what The Beautiful Struggle is about. Ta- Nehisi tells the story of his life, about his parents, siblings, teachers, friends and other people, who surrounded him and has at least minimal influence on his “road to manhood”. The young black boy wasn’t a typical kid; his environment greatly influenced his behavior. There was a struggle inside boy’s head – his father who taught him Knowledge on the one hand, and “streets professors”, bad boy from bands, on the other. And he could unite both these extremes. He fell anger and love, passion and dull simultaneously and it was his individuality. He knew that his way of life wont lead him to success and he need to study but he couldn’t do that because he didn’t like it. As well as his elder brother Bill. They were bad boys, who were educated on streets mostly, because they thought it was cool.

Behavior was their major problem at school, one day Ta- Nehisi even kicked his English teacher because it seemed to him that that this man abused him. He believed that real life is outside the classroom and staying there was just a waste of time. as for him, streets were better than school because they taught really important things and those lessons are obligatory to attend. But he wasn’t a stupid boy; his father provided him with books and knowledge, and although he was a talented boy, he wrote poems and it was best time for him. Parents couldn’t do anything with his unwillingness to go to the school, and long talks and constant preachers were of no use. But they were trying hard and little by little boys began to understand what they meant and later they entered universities and there was bright future in front of them.

The greatest influence on Ta- Nehisi’ s life had his dad, a veteran of Vietnam, a man with strong spirit and unique intelligence. He grew up in poverty and violence. His crazy father had a great amount of children, some of them were by his own daughters and it was the worst thing about this man. So, Paul decided, that he will never be like his father and his children will be raised in lovely and friendly atmosphere and he fulfilled his promise: although he had seven children by four women, he took care of each of them and spent a lot of time and efforts trying to educate them although sometimes it was too hard and even almost impossible to do that but he had faith in his heart and God gave him power to fulfill his mission of a good father.

The Beautiful Struggle Quotes by Ta-Nehisi Coates

Ta-Nehisi Coates,

“It was the program from her ceremony, and on the side was a love note that I could not recognize as such. It was written in that vague, noncommittal way of a girl who wants you to know what she feels but wants to protect herself all the same. I did not know what I was holding, and was caught on the price in self-esteem for figuring it out. I talked to her that night and thanked her, but I did not push like I was supposed to. I could not see that beneath the shield, beneath the smiles and laughter that were her armor, behind the glowing ax, all of us are waiting to be swept away.”
