AIG Appoints Steven Barnett as Chief Executive Officer of Asia Pacific
SINGAPORE, 20 January 2020 – American International Group, Inc. (NYSE: AIG) today announced the appointment of Steven Barnett as Chief Executive Officer of Asia Pacific, General Insurance, effective immediately.
In this role, Mr. Barnett will report to Lex Baugh, Acting Chief Executive Officer, International General Insurance and Global Chief Underwriting Officer for Casualty and Financial Lines, General Insurance, and will be based in Singapore. His appointment is subject to regulatory approval.
“We are pleased to welcome Steven back to Asia Pacific as CEO,” said Mr. Baugh. “Steven’s track record and deep understanding of this dynamic region ideally qualify him for this role as we enhance the value we deliver to our customers across Asia Pacific and continue to position AIG as an industry leader.”
During his nearly 30 years with AIG, Mr. Barnett has held a series of leadership roles in Asia, where he served as President and CEO of Korea from 2011 to 2018 and CEO of Thailand from 2003 to 2011. Most recently, he served as CEO of Middle East and Africa since 2018. Mr. Barnett succeeds Sachin Shah, who will be leaving the company to pursue other opportunities.
AIG appoints Steven Barnett as CEO for Asia-Pacific
Barnett has been with AIG for almost 30 years and most recently was the company’s CEO for its Middle East and Africa regional operations. He has served several tours of duty in the Asia-Pacific region – from 2011 to 2018, he was CEO of AIG Korea, and from 2003 to 2011, he was CEO of AIG Thailand.
“We are pleased to welcome Steven back to Asia-Pacific as CEO,” said Lex Baugh, AIG’s global chief underwriting officer and acting chief executive for international general insurance.
“Steven’s track record and deep understanding of this dynamic region ideally qualify him for this role as we enhance the value we deliver to our customers across the Asia-Pacific [region] and continue to position AIG as an industry leader.”
Succeeding Barnett in his vacated post as CEO for Middle East and Africa is Thomas Lillelund, AIG’s Europe CEO. Lillelund will hold the positions concurrently.
Sexual harassment probe of AIG head in final stages

The nation’s human rights agency said Wednesday that its probe of AIG Korea CEO Steven Barnett over alleged sexual harassment of a female employee is in its final stages.
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea said the state agency will soon complete its five-month investigation into the actions of the British businessman. In February, Barnett was accused of sexually harassing a company employee, allegedly asking her to sit on his knee in a car.
“Our investigators have questioned him since the employee and the company’s trade union filed a complaint against him,” said a spokeswoman of the human rights agency.
However, she declined to elaborate on the matter, saying information on sexual harassment cases is confidential.
The agency said that it will urge the company to punish Barnett if it concludes he is accountable for the alleged sexual harassment. The human rights institution said it will file a complaint with the prosecutors’ office against the AIG executive if it collects clear evidence proving a crime.
Observers said the five-month investigation into Barnett is exceptionally long, considering other cases are completed within three months. The agency declined to comment on that issue.
AIG Korea said the company is waiting for the results from the human rights agency, and will deal with the matter according to the decision. The company said it still believes that the sexual harassment accusation is baseless.
“AIG is committed to maintaining a safe, healthy and respectful workplace. The company takes these allegations seriously and following a comprehensive analysis of the facts, it was determined that the complaint is without merit. We will continue to cooperate with the NHRC review,” said the company in a statement.
Barnett has led the insurer for the last four years. He is also chairman of the company’s board of directors and AIG Global Partners, an AIG owned shared service company.
He vowed to transform the company into a leading player earlier this year, but the sexual harassment allegation hit him hard, preventing him from pushing his agenda.

In addition to his role leading the General Insurance business in the Middle East, Africa, Russia and Israel, Mr Lillelund will continue to serve as Chief Executive Officer of AIG Europe SA with responsibility for Continental Europe and Ireland, a role he has held since 2018. He will be based in both Luxembourg and Dubai.
Mr Lillelund succeeds Steven Barnett in this role. Prior to joining AIG in 2018, Mr Lillelund was Regional Managing Director of Aspen Re’s Asia Pacific region. During his 20-year career, Mr Lillelund has held senior insurance industry roles in Hong Kong, South Africa and the US.
