Other than gray and greige, Sea Salt and other beachy-themed paint colours seem to be the most popular with today’s homeowners.
Why? Well, like a good gray or greige, they can suit MANY spaces and styles – everything from beach-themed bathrooms to cosy cottages!
Before we get started…
Not only have I worked with this colour on a daily basis with my E-Design clients, but I also painted a BIG OLE sample and strapped it to my body for the day (the non-kinky form of body paint). Paint sample on one hip, wine bottle on the other – I was locked n’ loaded! I looked at it in north and south-facing rooms – morning, noon and night, so I could get a better idea for how it works and then share that info with you.
And let me tell you, I needed that bottle of wine – in a sippy cup. By the time I was done, my brain was swimming with the many ways Sea Salt changed throughout the day. I mean, every colour will change on a room-to-room/wall-to-wall basis, but it must be the mix of undertones in this bad boy that makes it the ULTIMATE colour ninja.
So, the photos of these rooms are just examples of what you might be able to expect from a colour like Sea Salt in a variety of situations – it ain’t gospel, but it might be as close as we’ll get…just call me Saint Kylie.

Sea Salt has an LRV of 64, which means it can help a room feel lighter and brighter as it will reflect artificial and natural light back into the space, but it’s not SO light that it will save a dark room or OVERLY wash out in a reasonably well-lit one.

Sea Salt is a mix of water and salt. Hehe. Sea Salt is a mix of green and gray. Now, this is very similar to A LOT of today’s popular paint colours, but it’s all in the proportions when it comes to which colour is going to POP and which is going to recede. And that’s not ALL Sea Salt has tucked up its watery sleeves…
Sea Salt is INFAMOUS for looking blue – and not by a little bit, by a LOT. That’s right, the world’s favourite green-gray paint colour is actually a flasher – and it flashes blue, leaving green in the dust.
Some of the time, Sea Salt is a beautiful blend of green and gray, but it’s a cool green (green-blue), rather than a warm green (green-yellow).
Occasionally it will lean CONSIDERABLY into its green side, more often in a south-facing room or a room with warm light bulbs.
It is also well known for going green-blue or blue with only a nod towards green, more often in north-facing rooms with diffused light. Part of the ‘recipe’ of this paint colour is a blueish black – meaning it can subtly influence the foundation of this colour in the right lighting situation .
Sea Salt in a well-balanced, well-lit room
In a well-lit room with a few different exposures (common in open concepts), Sea Salt will likely vary itself on a wall-to-wall basis throughout the day. Sometimes flashing slightly more green, other times a bit bluer, all the while having the gray base to calm it down.

Sea Salt in a room with direct hits of natural light
In a room with a lot of direct natural light, you can expect Sea Salt to wash out a bit (due to its slightly higher LRV) without losing itself entirely. Once the direct sunlight goes away, the colour will come right on back!
Sea Salt in a room with very little or no natural lighting or in the evening
When there is very little natural light and a lot of shadows, you can expect this colour to look a bit more muted. It might also be slightly more inclined to lean into its green roots a bit more.

Sea Salt in a south-facing room
The sun’s rays in a south-facing room are yellow and this yellow can play off of the undertones in Sea Salt and cause it to look a bit green vs blue.
Sea Salt in a north-facing room
I just couldn’t get Sea Salt to completely lose the green, no matter how much those shadows wanted to interfere. No matter what exposure/room I was in, if it leaned a bit to the gray side with a cool blue cast, the green was always winking at me behind the scenes (don’t tell its wife) – but it DEFINITELY becomes passive.
And even when this colour DOES pick up a blue cast, it doesn’t look as icy as a traditional ‘light blue’ paint colour can as the green adds a certain softness.

Obviously, there’s A LOT to consider when choosing a paint colour – LRV, exposure, personal tastes and the needs of your home. Trust me, I learn more and more EVERY DAY about how these factors can affect the appearance of a colour. Here’s what I’ve learned from this salty colour adventure…
I need to not carry a bottle of wine with me throughout the day – I will then not have any left for the evening.
Sea Salt prefers to go green than blue, but not all of the time.
If you have a north-facing room that’s bright and you don’t use many artificial lights, Sea Salt may appear slightly bluer.
Once you add interior lighting (as long as it’s not those stark harsh white bulbs) the green may come back and balance things out again.
If you have a south-facing room , the green may be more apparent as the warm sun rays react to the cool tones of Sea Salt.
Phew, we did it! You can probably tell I’m in one of my OCD phases as I left no stone un-turned with that one!

salt at the front door Archives
i LOVE salt – the original crystal. it is forever one of my GO TO remedies when energy gets wonky. it’s simple and served to us straight from Big Mama (Earth). better yet, it connects to the salt in our sweat, tears and blood – making it an organic influencer of our own chi. and because i encourage clients to get salty as much as possible, i’m going to give you that same loving shove with 7 “salty” ways to work it into your shui:
TIP 1: place a pinch of sea salt in your wallet. salt draws energy to it, and wallet energy is money mojo. just make sure you give your wallet a quick purge first (receipts, paper clutter, maxed out cards, expired gift cards, etc.). this clears away any barriers to the good green getting to you!
TIP 2: remove your current doormat (if you have one), and sweep the area clean. next, put a new doormat (or your current mat after it’s been given a good shake) in front of the door. place 9 coins in a red envelope, and put them under the mat. the coins symbolize money walking into your life. additionally, sprinkle a pinch of salt under the mat, too. when you are done, say “and so it is!”
TIP 3: dealing with nightmares? stick a bowl of sea salt under or near the bed, and toss it out the next morning. repeat this until the dream’s energy has disappeared. salt is a universal cleanser, and it is powerfully effective at eliminating most energetic disturbances.
TIP 4: in our homes, sprinkling sea salt across the thresholds (where one room ends and the other begins) renews the space by absorbing stagnant energy in the air. if / when there has been a particularly bad experience in your home, like a fight or illness (or worse), sprinkle salt everywhere. in both instances, leave it for 24 hours. vacuum it up the next day, and any negative, stale, or residual energy lingering will be gone.
TIP 5: if your self-care is non-existent, do one of the following this week: either dip yourself into a magnesium (Epsom salts) bath – magnesium is relaxing; or soak in a Himalayan salt bath – a highly efficient detox. even better? indulge in both, and those two baths will cleanse your chakras, refresh your energy, and best of all, give you the gift of a little “me” time.
TIP 6: sprinkle grains of sea salt around your home’s periphery. this creates an energetic dome and detours any negative energy that might come your direction.
TIP 7: once a year, give your kitchen a salty wipe down. this ritual clears any lingering negative chi that might have settled here. it also keeps it from attaching to you. all you need is a damp cloth, natural rock salt, and a little elbow grease. dip your cloth into the salt, and wipe down everything – countertops, cupboards, pantry door, and floors – with the intention of extracting and eliminating old chi. (BONUS TIP: i use this cleanse after any home repair / improvement happens here!) xo
Three Big Feng Shui Ways To Protect Your Home From Negativity!
These days, my focus is on how to really harness energy at home.
What do I mean by this?
Harness: to bring under conditions for effective use; gain control over for a particular end (dictionary.com)
In this case, when you bring your space to it’s most effective use, you can see and actually live with the abundance it brings.
When you have really amazing energy in your space, you feel the vibrance and the life. And, when that energy is protected and contained, you’ll have a space where the energy grows with it’s own awesome momentum.
Today were going to talk about protecting and actually building the energy of your home!
When you protect your energy and really keep it focused and vibrant… it grows. And you don’t need to exaust yourself to keep it growing. This energy, once created and protected, will take on a powerful life of it’s own!
Think of it like plant care. While you do need to water and feed and care for your plants, if you were responsible for making each and every leaf, every cell in every leaf, grow, it would be exhausting. We rely on the fact that we can care for plants, and that they will do the growing.
The same goes for the energy in your home overall. When you care for the energy in your home, it becomes self-generating. Your home starts to support you, even without your extra effort.
There are many ways that energy can leak out of your space, or fall flat in your space.
Today, let’s look at a few ways to protect your home from outside negativity.
1. Sea salt your doors. Sea salt is a powerful purifier, and ironically enough, as I placed sea salt by my front and back doors yesterday in big bowls, an eruption of negativity from my neighbors flew at me. I always see that as a very positive sign, as unfortunate as these incidents can be. It’s as though the negative energy gets upset that it’s no longer welcome in! Keeping bowls of sea salt beside your door, or big hunks of Himalayan sea salt on tables near your door is a powerful purifier and energy-protector. I don’t leave the bowls long before trading them out (don’t use this salt, toss it!), though I do leave the pink hunks of salt there indefinitely.
2. Make a crystal grid for your whole home. Room by room, you can put white Quartz in each corner to create a grid of energy. I love the idea of quarts in corners because it has such high energy, something that’s been scientifically proven, and you can really feel the difference when you hold quarts that you love in your hands. These grids of energy are thought to both energize and protect your space energetically.
3. Clear away negative words. The less negativity you bring into your home with thoughts, words and actions, the less negativity you will have in your space and your life. Well… this might seem very basic, but it’s very possible you may complain or express way more negativity than you realize. I have caught myself a lot lately! There’s no sense in building so much positive energy in a space only to polluted with toxic ideas!
The more you can generate a positive space for yourself and your family and loved ones, the more that positive momentum builds. These three ideas all hinge on the fact that we actually are responsible for the energy around us. The more you can see your environment and your life as your creation, the more you can change it very real and practical ways.

My mommy and me the summer of 1958, Evansville, Indiana.
This is a special post I think you’ll enjoy about the best front door paint colors. I decided to write about the rest of my trip next week because not everyone is interested in that. But, I’ll have more pictures and stories to share with you soon.
In the meantime, I have some fantastic news.
This afternoon, I took an at-home rapid Covid test which came back NEGATIVE! Thank you all for the darling messages and comments you sent me. I am feeling pretty much back to my old self and am very grateful.
Okay, let’s move on to the best front door paint colors.
Since living in Boston, one of the best cities for gorgeous front doors, several posts feature some beautiful front door paint colors.
One, a favorite, where I share some of my favorite doors in Beacon Hill.

In this post focusing solely on the best front door colors, we’ll review some old favorites and some that are more unusual.
So, let’s jump in to look at the best exterior and front door colors, or at least some of my favorites.
Let’s begin with a less common color for a front door. However, there are times when this is a stunning choice.
WHITE
Above is a relatively new home in New Orleans built by Scheffy Construction. I found them on Instagram. The developer is Highland Homes. On their website, you can see numerous gorgeous images of their homes in suburban New Orleans.
I read that the house and door color are painted in Sherwin Williams Pure White.
And, the shutters are Sherwin Williams Sea Salt.
If I had a free-standing dream house, something like this would be what it would look like. I wouldn’t change a thing.
Above, another gorgeous home by Scheffy construction. It looks like there are three front doors. Love the pale colors and the transoms over the doors.

The reason is, that I don’t always know what it is, and paint colors can look quite different outdoors. However, it could possibly be a color like.
Benjamin Moore Paper White.
Or Benjamin Moore Shoreline.
These are both paint colors in the Laurel Home Paint and Palette Collection.

Bill Ingram’s fabulous cottage was originally seen in House Beautiful. They say that the door color is Copley Gray, and I suppose it’s possible since the sun is so bright. However, Copley Gray is much darker than this. (see below). Anyway, this tone on tone is so lovely.
A pale whisper of color also looks terrific on this back door in a home we visited in the fall of 2017 in England. Ben Pentreath designed this one.
A Black door is an enduring classic and definitely one of the best front door paint colors.
Architect Tim Barber’s wonderful home was painted in Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee. That is one of the Laurel Home Paint Collection 12 shades of white paint.

Fine Paints of Europe makes a rich, black, glossy paint that’s gorgeous on exterior doors.

I love the leaded glass sidelights.
Typically, the sidelights (narrow windows flanking the door) are not painted the same color as the door.
But, if the door is mostly glass, it makes sense to paint them the same color.
RED
That’s another very popular color and for a good reason. It just wakes everything up!

The classic red door on a white house with black shutters. This one could very well be an excellent red by Benjamin Moore, Heritage Red. This is another beauty in Charleston, SC.

Another classic center hall colonial in Maine, however, this time with dark green shutters that look to be Benjamin Moore Essex Green, a very dark, almost black-green. Outside, it’s green. Unique colors with the orange trees!

I’m often asked about the interior side of the front door. Can you bring the outside color in? Yes! You can, however, you don’t have to. It depends on what else is going on.
But, the important thing which I probably should’ve said about 28 images ago is that the exterior color should relate to the inside color(s).
Another Loi Thai beauty while he was on holiday. Love the vivid blue door. It reminds me of Farrow and Ball’s St. Giles Blue.
Kelly In the City
This has to be the most photographed door and house in all of Charleston. Maybe anywhere! And for good reason, it’s an unbeatable combo of classic Georgian styling and proportions and the most lovely warm pink verging on coral in some images.
It reminds me of Salmon Peach, one of the Benjamin Moore colors in my curated collection I’ve been mentioning ad nauseam a lot.
