She was a founding member of The Furies Collective, a lesbian feminist publication.

Rita Mae Brown, Martina Navratilova &

Traces of love, not so long ago . . .

A soft color photograph of a smiling Martina Navratilova, encased in a silver and black Art Deco frame, sits on the window ledge of the second-floor office. Downstairs, in the near-empty study, the bookshelves are filled with the 458-volume set of Loeb’s Classics, a $5,000 gift.

“Martina gave them to me for my birthday last year,” says Rita Mae Brown. “It was the best birthday present I ever got.”

Sure, it sounds corny, she says, “but when you love someone you love them.” Her brown eyes are misting over. “I figure I signed on for life.”

From the beginning, they were an odd love match.

Rita Mae Brown, dark-eyed beauty, feisty feminist, lesbian activist, acclaimed author of “Rubyfruit Jungle,” and Martina Navratilova, young expatriate Czech tennis star with the winsome eyes and steely reserve.

Their private love affair suddenly became public property in the afterglow of notoriety prompted by Billie Jean King’s candid statements on her own love affair with her former female secretary.

Brown and Navratilova first met at a luncheon in 1979, fell in love and last year bought a rambling, 20-room mansion on the outskirts of Charlottesville, Va., complete with tennis court, swimming pool and panoramic view of the Blue Ridge.

“It was a lunch that never ended,” Brown said of their love affair.

They exercised in the $4,000 Universal gym in the basement, charmed guests at dinner parties, strolled on the lush grounds of their nine-acre estate and, in a bittersweet bow to tradition, wore thin gold wedding rings on the third fingers of their left hands.

And if anyone in town had any qualms about the relationship, they were soon won over by the tenderness between the two women who never sought approval, only a brief respite from the public glare of their shared celebrityhoods and careers. What better place than Charlottesville, that brick- and ivy-covered enclave of millionaires, horse breeders, intellectuals and writers, a town blessed with a British-style tolerance for eccentricity?

Rita Mae Brown had lived there since 1978. Before moving in with Navratilova, she had shared a house with actress-writer Fannie Flagg (“Coming Attractions”), in what Brown says was a business relationship.

Navratilova, who defected to America in 1975, fell in love with the rolling countryside, telling reporters the area reminded her of her homeland.

While the 24-year-old left-hander was busy becoming the top money winner on the women’s tennis tour this year (earning nearly $500,000), the 36-year-old Brown, who often accompanied Navratilova on the tour, was finishing her fourth novel, “Sudden Death.” The book, scheduled for publication next month, deals with the women’s pro tennis circuit and, in particular, with a lesbian defector who bears a close resemblance to Navratilova.

But sometime this spring, their match was coming to an end.

Reporters began asking questions, especially after the Billie Jean King revelation.

Navratilova, a popular athlete with the sports writers if not the fans, made no secret of her relationship with Rita Mae Brown. But her long-awaited citizenship hearing was set for July and she was worried, according to one source, that talking freely about her bisexuality would hurt her chances of becoming a citizen. In news accounts, she also expressed fears that sponsors would start pulling out of women’s tennis if there were more revelations of homosexuality.

Sometime after Wimbledon, where Navratilova was hounded by reporters about her sex life, the affair ended.

“She just walked out on me,” Brown says now. “Can you believe it?”

Brown is sitting in the stark living room of their spacious English stone mansion, chewing gum and twisting the thin gold ring on the third finger of her left hand. Earlier that day, two of Brown’s assistants packed up Navratilova’s belongings, loaded them into a U-Haul and set out for Dallas to deliver them to the tennis star, who is now sharing a house with Dallas Diamonds’ basketball superstar Nancy Lieberman.

“She Navratilova fell in love with somebody else,” says Brown. “It happens all the time.”

Not so, says her former lover.

“That’s not the reason we broke up. In her eyes, maybe, but not in mine,” says Navratilova. Reached in Dallas, Navratilova says that Nancy Lieberman is “straight” and that the two women are just friends. “My personal life is nobody’s business,” Navratilova says angrily.

As for the split with Brown, the tennis star says, “We weren’t happy . That’s the reason we broke up.”

Brown shrugs her shoulders. No, she says, she is not bitter. But the end came as a surprise. “For me it did,” she says. “I think people have no control over their hearts.”

There is no such thing as security, she says. “Security is when you’re dead.”

She is small and dark, with enormous brown eyes, freckled skin and wisps of short brown hair falling over a high forehead. A young Natalie Wood, with street smarts and small crow’s-feet etched into her angular face. She wears a white silk blouse, diamond necklace, gold Rolex watch (a gift from a female admirer), and gold hoop earrings. Her toes, peeking out from white sling-back heels, are painted rubyfruit red. She looks, contrary to her literary image, vulnerable and fragile, engulfed by the vast emptiness of the enormous rooms.

Yes, she says softly, she would take Martina back.

Can this be the same Rita Mae Brown who shocked the literary scene in 1973 with her sexy, sassy semi-autobiographical novel about growing up gay in straight-arrowville America? The same Rita Mae Brown who got kicked out of NOW? The same outrageous, reckless Rita who delights in perpetuating her reputation as Molly Bolt, the illegitimate brat boy-woman who came into this world, not with a cry, but with a Bronx cheer?

“Love is the wild card of existence,” she says

A Week to Remember: Happy Birthday, Rita Mae Brown!

On November 28, 1944, Rita Mae Brown was born. Brown began her literary career in the 1970s as one of the first lesbian authors to find mainstream success; more recently, she has distanced herself from the label “lesbian author” and become a popular writer of cozy mystery novels.

Brown began her college studies in 1962 at the University of Florida, which was at the time a racially segregated university. She was expelled in 1964. Reports vary on the precise cause—some say it was her involvement in the civil rights movement; it might have been her open declaration of lesbianism.

She continued her studies at a local community college before hitchhiking to New York. After a few years of working various jobs to pay for class, she received a degree in classics and English from New York University. Brown would later go on to earn doctoral degrees in literature and political science.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Brown worked with a variety of political groups, usually briefly. Her primary interest was lesbian rights, and there weren’t many groups focusing on that area at the time. She found that gay rights groups were largely male-dominated and not interested in the specific problems of lesbians, and many women’s rights groups avoided gay and lesbian issues, seeing them as a liability that would delay progress toward gender equality.

In 1971, Brown was a founding member of The Furies Collective, a Washington, DC separatist lesbian community. While The Furies lasted only a year—and Brown’s connection to the group was even shorter than that—it was one of the most important groups in the era’s lesbian separatist movement.

Brown published her first novel, Rubyfruit Jungle, in 1973. It was an autobiographical coming-of-age story originally published by a small feminist press. It sold very well, as small press books go, and when it was republished by Bantam as a mass-market paperback in 1977, it became one of the first lesbian novels to find a large audience outside that community. Almost fifty years later, Rubyfruit Jungle can feel somewhat cliched to a contemporary reader, but it’s important to remember that what are now the standard elements of lesbian coming-of-age stories were being created by Brown and her contemporaries; they weren’t cliches at the time.

Brown has created several long-running series of novels, the first of which began in 1978 with Six of One. The Runnymede novels tell the ongoing story of the women of a small Maryland town over the decades after World War II, and Brown has returned to Runnymede about every ten years for a new novel.

Between 1979 and 1981, Brown was romantically involved with Martina Navratilova, and she drew on the experience for her 1984 novel Sudden Death, a romantic comedy set in the world of women’s tennis in which a principal plot point is whether the tennis player character will publicly acknowledge her lesbianism. That was followed by High Hearts, a Civil War novel about a woman who disguises herself as a man in order to follow her husband into war, and finds that she is a better soldier than he is.

Brown began her longest-running series in 1990. The “Mrs. Murphy” novels are murder mysteries in which the amateur detective is unknowningly assisted by her cat, Mrs. Murphy. The novels are credited to “Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown,” Sneaky Pie being Brown’s own cat. Wish You Were Here is the first of 28 volumes in the series.

For 1994’s Venus Envy, Brown returned to comedy, with a protagonist who thinks she’s dying in her mid-30s, takes the opportunity to tell her friends and family that she’s gay, then has to deal with the consequences when she finds out she’s going to live after all. Dolley was a return to historical fiction, telling the story of Dolley Madison; and Riding Shotgun combined the two in a time-travel farce about a contemporary woman traveling back to 1690s Virginia.

Brown has added two more series of murder mysteries to her success with Mrs. Murphy. The Jane Arnold series, beginning with Outfoxed in 2000, is set against a backdrop of Virginia country clubs and foxhunts. A pair of 2010 novels set at a Nevada ranch—A Nose for Justice and Murder Unleashed—looked like an attempt to start a dog-centered parallel to the Mrs. Murphy books, but Brown has not returned to that series.

In recent years, Brown has distanced herself from the “lesbian writer” identity. “I’m a writer and I’m a woman and I’m from the South and I’m alive, and that is that,” she told one interviewer. To another, she said, “I’m not even remotely interested in being gay. I find that one of those completely useless and confining categories.”

Brown’s most recent novels have been entries in her various series—the fifth Runnymede novel, Cakewalk; Whiskers in the Dark, the latest Mrs. Murphy mystery; and Scarlet Fever, the twelfth volume in the Jane Arnold series. She has also occasionally written nonfiction, including the writing guide Starting from Scratch, and Animal Magnetism, a memoir about the animals who have played important roles in her life.

The Cabinet is a body not explicitly created or defined in the United States Constitution, but the President is given the authority to request advice from the heads of the government’s executive departments. There were only four such heads at Washington’s first Cabinet meeting—the Attorney General, and the Secretaries of State, Treasury, and War. Today, the Cabinet includes the Vice-President and the 15 secretaries of executive departments, with several other offices generally considered to be “Cabinet-level” positions. Lindsay M. Sojourner Truth died. We normally take note of someone’s life on their birthday, but like many people born into slavery, we cannot date Truth’s birth more precisely than sometime in the late 1790s. Truth escaped to freedom in 1826. She is best remembered for an extemporaneous speech she gave in 1851, arguing fiercely that black women should be included in the women’s rights movement. The speech was later reconstructed by one of the organizers of the convention, and while the reconstruction is surely not entirely accurate, the speech has become known in that form as “Ain’t I a Woman?” Nell Irvin Painter is the author of the biography Sojourner Truth

“It was the best birthday present I ever got.” Sure, it sounds corny, she says, “but when you love someone you love them.” Her brown eyes are misting over. “I figure I signed on for life.” From the beginning, they were an odd love match. “Can you believe it?” Brown is sitting in the stark living room of their spacious English stone mansion, chewing gum and twisting the thin gold ring on the third finger of her left hand. “It happens all the time.” Not so, says her former lover. That’s the reason we broke up.” Brown shrugs her shoulders. No, she says, she is not bitter. But the end came as a surprise. “For me it did,” she says. “I think people have no control over their hearts.” There is no such thing as security, she says. “Security is when you’re dead.” She is small and dark, with enormous brown eyes, freckled skin and wisps of short brown hair falling over a high forehead.

Ahead of a new book, Rita Mae Brown sure of arts in the Trump era

There is an air of mystery, a touch of history and that undeniable voice. Sneaky Pie Brown is back on the prowl. The talented feline has much to say. But since mere humans only are privy to her wisdom via the written word, Sneaky Pie’s mom has been willing to convey the latest news. In fact, Rita Mae Brown will be at Barnes and Noble on Tuesday to detail their latest collaboration. “A Hiss Before Dying” — the 26th in the Mrs. Murphy Mystery series – officially goes on sale the same day. And despite Sneaky Pie enjoying almost equal billing with her co-author, she generally prefers to remain at her Nelson County farm. While the Pie did attend a local signing at the long-gone Book Gallery back in 1990, only Brown will be on hand for Tuesday’s event. “I learned my lesson,” she said about bringing along her feline companion. “That didn’t go so well.” The New York Times bestselling author has an impressive resume that stretches across genres. Brown has put pen to paper on more than a dozen novels, including her Sister Jane foxhunting novels and a collection of nonfiction works, ranging from a cookbook to a writer’s manual. All told, there have been more than 50 books, translated into eight languages. And then there was that screenwriting endeavor that earned two Emmy nominations. Rita Mae never has been one to conform. She spoke out for LGBTQ rights when many were afraid to do so. “Rubyfruit Jungle” was a lifeline to closeted youngsters in the ’70s. Gloria Steinem said it was “the rare work of fiction that has changed real life.” Brown still has a ready and well-informed opinion on politics, and she’s not shy to tell you whom she voted for. “This is just a blip,” she said. “People don’t remember politicians. But they will remember Rita Dove and Toni Morrison and maybe John Grisham. The arts will survive the swirl of politics.” She knows our history, and manages — with the help of Sneaky Pie — to pass on a little lesson to her mystery lovers. “People aren’t that interested in history, and I can understand that,” she said. “Some think the world started when they were born.” But she said that she is pleased that most of her readers don’t seem to mind the historical intertwining of her more recent Mrs. Murphy mysteries. You might not pick up a book about the Articles of Confederation, but you might be interested in how a cat, her portly feline friend and their Welsh corgi companion solve yet another murder in Crozet. “It started two books ago,” Brown said about marrying the death of a popular history professor to a murder that happened near a local POW camp back during the Revolutionary War. Her new historical mystery returns to the post-Revolutionary days, tracking wild animal poaching from the past to the present. You can’t take the activist out of the author. But you also can’t match her ability to weave a tale with sharp wit, wisdom and a little Sneaky Pie whimsy. Brown’s quick wit seemed a perfect fit for Hollywood. “I went to California … but I didn’t belong there. It was a business,” she said. “I worked with Norman Lear on [the Emmy-nominated] ‘I Love Liberty.’ He was the best.” The legendary television writer and producer was the mastermind behind the likes of “All in the Family,” “Maude,” “The Jeffersons” and “Sanford and Son.” “He had so many writers working for him, I knew I didn’t have a chance, so I decided to go back home. I needed to find a way to support my mom and my aunt.” Her road home came through Charlottesville on her way out to Afton. It’s there that she does what she loves: Shares the land with Sneaky Pie and her other cats and dogs. Even a broken hip hasn’t kept her away from riding horses. “You don’t get to be [my] age without a few bumps and bruises,” she said. It’s in Virginia that she continues to write — not by computer, mind you. And for all of her friends and fans, Rita Mae Brown said that she has one thing she wants people to know: It’s really not politics. It’s not history. It’s this, she said: “Your best friend comes on four feet.”

They later broke up due to, according to Brown, “generational differences”, although Flagg and Brown are the same age.[30][31][32] In 1979, Brown met and fell in love with tennis champion Martina Navratilova.[30] In 1980, they bought a horse farm in Charlottesville where they lived together until their breakup, over Navratilova’s then concern that coming out would hurt her application for U.S. citizenship.[30] Brown still lives on the estate in Charlottesville.[33][34] Published works [ edit ] Poetry [ edit ] Novels [ edit ] Runnymede books [ edit ] Mysteries [ edit ] Mrs. Murphy Mysteries The Mrs. Murphy Mysteries include “Sneaky Pie Brown” as a co-author.[36] Wish You Were Here (1990) ISBN 978-0-553-28753-0 Rest in Pieces (1992) ISBN 978-0-553-56239-2 Murder at Monticello (1994) ISBN 978-0-553-57235-3 Pay Dirt (1995) ISBN 978-0-553-57236-0 Murder, She Meowed (1996) ISBN 978-0-553-57237-7 Murder on the Prowl (1998) ISBN 978-0-553-57540-8 Cat on the Scent (1999) ISBN 978-0-553-57541-5 Pawing Through the Past (2000) ISBN 978-0-553-58025-9 Claws and Effect (2001) ISBN 978-0-553-58090-7 Catch as Cat Can (2002) ISBN 978-0-553-58028-0 The Tail of the Tip-Off (2003) ISBN 978-0-553-58285-7 Whisker of Evil (2004) ISBN 978-0-553-58286-4 Cat’s Eyewitness (2005) ISBN 978-0-553-58287-1 Sour Puss (2006) ISBN 978-0-553-58681-7 Puss n’ Cahoots (2007) ISBN 978-0-553-58682-4 The Purrfect Murder (2008) ISBN 978-0-553-58683-1 Santa Clawed (2008) ISBN 978-0-553-80706-6 Cat of the Century (2010) ISBN 978-0-553-80707-3 Hiss of Death (2011) ISBN 978-0-553-80708-0 The Big Cat Nap (2012) ISBN 978-0-345-53044-8 Sneaky Pie for President (2012) ISBN 1410450244/ ISBN 0345530470 — Not a Mrs. Murphy mystery The Litter of the Law (2013) ISBN 978-0-345-53048-6 Nine Lives to Die (2014) ISBN 978-0-345-53050-9 Tail Gait (2015) ISBN 978-0-553-39236-4 Tall Tail (2016) ISBN 978-0-553-39246-3 A Hiss Before Dying (2017)[37] Probable Claws (2018)[38] Whiskers in the Dark (2019)[39] Furmidable Foes (2020) Claws for Alarm (scheduled October 12, 2021) “Sister” Jane Mysteries Outfoxed (2000) ISBN 0345484258 Hotspur (2002) ISBN 0345428234 Full Cry (2003) ISBN 0345465202 The Hunt Ball (2005) ISBN 0345465504 The Hounds and the Fury (2006) ISBN 0345465482 The Tell-Tale Horse (2007) ISBN 034550626X Hounded to Death (2008) ISBN 0345512375 Fox Tracks (2012) ISBN 0345532996 Let Sleeping Dogs Lie (2014) ISBN 055339262X Crazy Like a Fox (2017) Homeward Hound (2018) Scarlet Fever (2019) Out of Hounds (2021) Mags Rogers Mysteries A Nose for Justice (2010) ISBN 978-0-345-51182-9[40] Murder Unleashed (2010) ISBN 978-0-345-51183-6 Nonfiction [ edit ] Starting from Scratch: A Different Kind of Writer’s Manual (1988). Brown wrote for Rat, an alternative bi-weekly that eventually became New York City’s first women’s liberation newspaper.[citation needed]

Later career [ edit ]

In 1982, Brown wrote a screenplay parodying the slasher genre titled Sleepless Nights; retitled The Slumber Party Massacre, the producers decided to play it seriously, and it was given a limited release theatrically.[11] Brown is featured in the feminist history film She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry.[12][13]

Philosophical and political views [ edit ]

In the spring of 1964, during her study at the University of Florida in Gainesville, she became active in the American Civil Rights Movement. Later in the 1960s, she participated in the anti-war movement, the feminist movement and the Gay Liberation movement.[14] She was involved with the Student Homophile League at Columbia University in 1967 but left it because the men in the league were not interested in women’s rights.[15]

She was involved in the Redstockings, but also left the group because of its lack of involvement in lesbian rights.[15] She then went on to join the Gay Liberation Front, where she suggested the formation of an all-lesbian group, since many of the women felt excluded from the feminist movement and the male-led gay liberation movement.[15]

Brown took an administrative position with the fledgling National Organization for Women, but resigned in January 1970 over comments by Betty Friedan seen by some as anti-gay and by the NOW’s attempts to distance itself from lesbian organizations.[16] Brown claimed that lesbian was “the one word that can cause the Executive Committee [of NOW] a collective heart attack.”[17]

Brown played a leading role in the “Lavender Menace” zap of the Second Congress to Unite Women on May 1, 1970, which protested Friedan’s remarks and the exclusion of lesbians from the women’s movement.[18][19] Brown and other lesbians from the Gay Liberation Front created The Woman-Identified Woman, which was distributed at the zap. The group that wrote the manifesto then went on to become the “Radicalesbians”.[15]

While doing work for the American Civil Rights Movement, Brown was introduced to consciousness-raising groups, which she incorporated into the organizations she created and the ones she worked in.[20][17]

In the early 1970s, she became a founding member of The Furies Collective, a separatist lesbian feminist collective in Washington, DC that held that heterosexuality was the root of all oppression.[18] The women wanted to create a communal living situation for radical feminists. The group purchased two houses, where they lived together and used consciousness raising techniques to talk about things like homophobia, feminism, and child rearing.[17] They believed that being a lesbian was a political act, not just a personal one. Brown was exiled from The Furies after a few months[15] and the group dismantled in 1972, a year after its inception.[17]

When asked if she had ever really come out, she told Time in 2008,

I don’t believe in straight or gay. I really don’t. I think we’re all degrees of bisexual. There may be a few people on the extreme if it’s a bell curve who really truly are gay or really truly are straight. Because nobody had ever said these things and used their real name, I suddenly became the only lesbian in America. It was hysterical. It was a misnomer, but it’s okay. It was a fight worth fighting.[21]

Brown also does not consider herself a “lesbian writer” because she believes art is about connection and not about divisive labels.[17] In a 2015 interview for The Washington Post, Brown was asked if she thought awards in gay and lesbian literature were important; she replied:

I love language, I love literature, I love history, and I’m not even remotely interested in being gay. I find that one of those completely useless and confining categories. Those are definitions from our oppressors, if you will. I would use them warily. I would certainly not define myself — ever — in the terms of my oppressor. Starting in 1973, Brown lived in the Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles.[29] In 1978, she moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, where she lived briefly with American actress, author, and screenwriter Fannie Flagg, whom she had met at a Los Angeles party hosted by Marlo Thomas. They later broke up due to, according to Brown, “generational differences”, although Flagg and Brown are the same age.[30][31][32]

In 1979, Brown met and fell in love with tennis champion Martina Navratilova.[30] In 1980, they bought a horse farm in Charlottesville where they lived together until their breakup, over Navratilova’s then concern that coming out would hurt her application for U.S. citizenship.[30] Brown still lives on the estate in Charlottesville.[33][34]
