ELISABETA BOSTAN
Elisabeth Bostan (born March 1, 1931, Buhuşi, Bacau County) is a Romanian film director and scriptwriter, professor. She is known as a film director for children because she has devoted most of his cinematic creations.
She graduated the “Calistrat Hogaş” National College from Piatra Neamţ and in 1954, the Institute of Theater and Cinematography “I.L. Caragiale” from Bucharest, directing department. She debuted in 1958, with two short films, “Three Romanian Games” and “The Golden Chick”. She was a Dean of the Faculty of Film at the National University of Theater and Cinematography, a member of the Union of Cinematographers.

The movie was done originally in Romania and in Romanian and was called “La Championne” or “Campioana.” This version is dubbed over in English and is called “Reach for the Sky”. Stars Izabella Moldolvan as a cute, spirited, young Romanian girl, who wants to be a gymnast.
Plot and Subplots
The main plot of the movie shows the life of a gymnast, a young girl named Corina who is living in a small rural town in Romania. Her greatest dream is to go to Deva to train at the National Gymnastics Training Center in Deva, Romania (made famous by Nadia and Bel Karolyi). Another subplot is the story of the two young gymnasts and friends from, who must both find the determination and strength within themselves to compete in gymnastics. The coaching subplot revolve around questions about coaching styles, discipline and coaches leaving their gymnasts for more money.
Old Gymnastics Family Film
This is an interesting Romanian gymnastics movie, but strangely is classified on many movie sites as a comedy, when it is actually a drama. This is an old movie (1990 – 1991), filmed when the uneven bars were still very close together. This family-oriented movie was the twelfth in the series of videos called Tales for All.

Campioana (1990)
This is yet another sport movie. That’s a compliment.
Two small town girls in Romania aspire to get into and succeed in a top gymnastics school. After a lot of struggle, they win a competition in the end. That’s the story.
I never tire of this theme. You can never tire of a theme whose keywords are struggle, hardwork, success, innocence, mentorship, friendship and so on. These are exactly the kind of stories i’d love to show my kid.
Another point is that these kind of movies should have only one kind of ending. The one where human spirit alone triumphs. Not the most skilled or the most talented or the most intelligent, but the one who exemplifies the best quality of mankind-struggle. This film shows that hope and perseverance win. In the real world it isn’t always like that, but kids need to know that there is always hope.
Some call it corny, but if The Godfather(where a socially enabled psycho is the hero) is an example of a ‘original’ film, i’d gladly watch corny movies for the rest of my life.
