Biography
Sang-Seok Yoon, who earned the PhD in Korean Linguistics from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, joined the Department of Asian and Slavic Languages and Literatures in 2012. The focus of his research is sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and second language acquisition. He specializes in linguistic politeness of the Korean language, and is one of the authors of the Integrated Korean Textbook series by the University of Hawaii Press, the most commonly used Korean textbook in the U.S.

Yeonhee Yoon
Biography
Professor Yoon teaches Korean language and culture courses. She is dedicated to development of a rigorous and cohesive Korean language and culture program as the current Korean program coordinator. She has taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, and Harvard University before she joined our department. Her current research interests include Intercultural Pragmatics, Korean popular culture and migration, and Korean for specific purposes. Her recent publications include the article, “Korean Society”, in Essentials of Korean Culture (2013) , “Curriculum Development of Korean Language for Diplomacy” in Developing Courses in Languages for Specific Purposes (2015), Korean Hedges in Spoken Discourse (2016), and The Korean Wave from a Private Commodity to a Public Good (2020).
Prof. Yoon has received the University of Notre Dame’s Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C., Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 2019.
