Guide: How to Care for Your New Plant(s)

Hydrangea macrophylla Endless Summerยฎ Blushing Brideยฎ

Latin Name Pronunciation: hye-dran’jee-uh

Growing H. macrophylla

Some Hydrangea macrophylla varieties flower on old wood, and must carry their flower buds through the winter. Early or late freezes may damage flower buds and prevent them from blooming. For example, in Zone 5, bloom may only succeed 3 years out of 5, but the plant itself is hardy there. Fortunately for gardeners in cooler zones, recent introductions will likely bloom for them, as they flower on new growth as well as year-old stems.

Light/Watering: Most varieties tolerate full sun in the North, but benefit from afternoon shade. In the South, plants require afternoon shade. Moist soils that do not dry out are best; do not plant in hot, dry, exposed sites. Mulch to conserve moisture and buffer soil temperatures.

Fertilizer/Soil and pH: Fertilize once in spring with a fertilizer designed to encourage blooms (such as 15-30-15). In many H. macrophylla varieties, flower color is determined by the pH of the soil; at low pH (acid soils) flowers will be blue and at higher pH, flowers will be pink. Generally, a pH below 5.0 results in deep, vivid blues and as the pH rises the flowers range from blue to lavender to mauve to a vivid deep pink at pH 7.0 (neutral). The pH determines the availability of aluminum in the soil; this element is more readily available in acid soils, and this availability results in the blue flower color. Since phosphorus ties up aluminum in soils, using a fertilizer low in this nutrient will aid in attaining blue flowers. If pink flowers are desired and your soil is acid, simply add lime to raise the pH and use a balanced fertilizer. Aluminum sulfate will lower pH if blue flowers are desired.

How to test your soil?

We recommend that you visit your local Cooperative Extension Service to find out about soil testing in your area. Follow this link for a directory of institutions involved in the Cooperative Extension program.

We also offer a Soil pH Meter, which allows you to test your soil and provides quick, accurate results.

Pests/Diseases: None serious. Occasionally powdery mildew will infect the foliage, especially in humid areas with poor air circulation. Treat with an appropriate fungicide if the problem is serious, and be sure to rake up and destroy all fallen foliage in the autumn.

Pruning: If your Hydrangea is growing too large, prune to the desired size by the end of August. In spring, only prune out dead wood once the new growth has emerged. This includes H. m. ‘Big Daddy,’ H. m. Citylineยฎ Mars, H. m. Citylineยฎ Rio, H. m. Citylineยฎ Venice, H. m. Color Fantasyยฎ, H. m. Double Delightsโ„ข Star Gazer, H. m. Everlastingโ„ข Amethyst, H. m. ‘Lady in Red,’ H. m. Light-O-Dayยฎ, H. m. ‘Nikko Blue,’ H. m. Pink Shiraโ„ข, and Parapluยฎ. These varieties bloom on old wood.

For mophead varieties blooming on both old and new wood, by the end of August cut back stems by about half if plants are growing too tall. Remove some of the oldest stems at ground level to thin out the shrub as needed. In spring, only prune out dead wood once the new growth has emerged. This includes H. m. ‘Blushing Bride,’ H. m. Double Delightsโ„ข Star Gazer, H. m. Endless Summerยฎ, H. m. Endless Summerยฎ Bloomstruckโ„ข, H. m. Everlastingยฎ Revolution, H. m. Let’s Danceยฎ Big Easy, Let’s Danceยฎ Blue Janglesยฎ, H. m. Let’s Danceยฎ Moonlight, Let’s Danceยฎ Raveโ„ข, H. m. Let’s Danceยฎ Starlight, H. m. Mysticalยฎ Opal, H. m. Nantucket Blueโ„ข, H. m. Pistachio, and H. m. Twist-n-Shoutโ„ข.

Reflowering: Regularly deadheading the spent blooms of H. macrophylla that bloom on both old and new wood helps encourage repeat bloom on the current year’s growth.

Transplanting: Young plants may be transplanted when dormant in early spring.

End of Season Care: Rake up and destroy any fallen foliage that was infected by powdery mildew or other fungi. For gardeners in Zone 5, we recommend covering the stems with a 12โ€ layer of organic material such as straw or mulched leaves to help preserve the flower buds through the cold winter. In addition, you may wrap your Hydrangea with burlap to protect it from winds and cold temperatures.

Calendar of Care

Mid-Spring: Prune out any dead wood from all varieties. Check soil pH and adjust up or down if needed for desired flower color. Feed plants with a fertilizer high in phosphorus (such as 15-30-15) to encourage blooms. Complete any transplanting before leaves unfurl. Mulch plants after soil has warmed to conserve moisture and buffer soil temperatures. Watch for powdery mildew and treat as needed.

Fall: Remove and destroy any fallen foliage that was infected by powdery mildew. In Zone 5, cover the stems with a 12โ€ layer of organic material such as straw or mulched leaves to help flower buds overwinter. You may also wrap your Hydrangea with burlap to protect it from winds and cold temperatures.

Garden care: Leave the old flower heads in place through the winter. As the new shoots start to emerge in spring cut back a third to a quarter of the previous seasonโ€™s flowering stems to the base and cut back the remaining flower heads to the first pair of buds.

Is Hydrangea glam rock Evergreen?

Hydrangea macrophylla Glam Rock (โ€˜Horwackโ€™) (PBR)

This shrub is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

What type of hydrangea is glam rock?

Hydrangea macrophylla Glam Rock (โ€˜Horwackโ€™PBR) (H)

A deciduous shrub with broadly ovate, toothed leaves, and domed clusters of flowers in summer. Flowers are brightly coloured, bluish purple in the centre and bright pink with lime green splashes on the petals.

How do you get hydrangeas to bloom twice?

Since no amount of food or pruning will encourage hydrangea reblooming, what can you do if you want a repeat act of the powerful flowers? Plant a variety that blooms off both old and new wood for successive flowering. They are called remontant, which means reblooming.

How many times will hydrangeas bloom?

Most new growth hydrangeas put on buds in early summer to bloom in the following spring, summer and early fall seasons. In hot climates, hydrangeas may stop blooming in the heat of summer, but will rebloom in the fall.

Do hydrangeas repeat flowers?

Hydrangeas traditionally produce just one bloom per stem each year, but โ€˜Endless Summerโ€™ hydrangeas are a breakthrough in breeding. They repeat flower, allowing a flowering season 10-12 weeks longer than usual. Pruning below the spent flowers stimulates new growth and new flowers.

How do I get my hydrangeas to bloom again?

How to Get More Panicle Hydrangea Flowers: Plant panicle hydrangeas in all-day sun or afternoon sun. Water them during a drought, especially if you notice wilting. Add plenty of organic matter (such as compost) around the plant. Limit any drastic pruning to early spring, just before new growth emerges.

Repeat Blooming Hydrangeas

Are you frustrated because your French or mophead (Hydrangea macrophylla) hydrangeas only bloom once? Then the Endless Summerยฎ Hydrangea series is the answer to adding repeat blooming hydrangeas to your landscape. With proper care, they will bloom from early summer to fall. The first flush of flowers in the early summer usually bloom on old wood; therefore, any necessary pruning should be done immediately after blooming. Flower buds will then form on new wood. As these blooms fade, deadheading is recommended to encourage more flower bud production. Flower color is determined by the availability of aluminum in the soil. If the soil is more acid, the flowers will be blue in color, but in alkaline soils, they will turn pink. If the soil pH is neutral (7.0), then the flowers will be purple. Another advantage to planting these repeat blooming hydrangeas is that if there is a cold winter, it will only kill back the early flower buds. To keep your Endless Summerยฎ hydrangeas blooming all summer, itโ€™s important to keep the plants properly watered. When it gets hot and dry, these cultivars, if not watered correctly, will go into a hot weather hibernation and not repeat bloom. Plant hydrangeas in a location that has morning sun and dappled shade in the afternoon. At this point, there are five cultivars of Endless Summerยฎ Hydrangeas available. The original cultivar (Hydrangea macrophylla ยดBailmerยด PP15,298) was introduced in 2004 and matures at 3 to 5 feet tall and wide with a mounding growth habit. Blushing Brideยฎ (Hydrangea macrophylla ยดBlushing Brideยด PP17,169) has pure white flowers that mature to a light blush pink or blue, depending on the soil pH. This upright and rounded grower gets 3 to 6 feet tall and wide. Twist-n-Shoutยฎ (Hydrangea macrophylla ยดPIIHM-Iยด PP20,176) is one of the first re-blooming lacecap hydrangeas. Depending on the soil pH, it will have blue or pink flowers and blooms on strong, red stems. Similar to the original Endless Summerยฎ, it matures at 3 to 5 feet tall and wide. BloomStruckยฎ (Hydrangea macrophylla ยดPIIHM-IIยด PP25,566) has rose-pink or purple flowers with red stems and dark green leaves with red veins. It grows 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide. Summer Crushยฎ (Hydrangea macrophylla โ€˜Bailmacfiveโ€™ PPAF) is a new cultivar that will be available this year. It has raspberry red or neon purple flowers and a compact growth habit. Maturing to only 18 to 36 inches, it is a perfect selection for a small garden or growing in a container. For more information on growing hydrangeas, see HGIC 1067, Hydrangea and HGIC 1096, Pruning Hydrangeas.

Endless Summer Blushing Bride Hydrangea

Please Note: The pictures below are to give a general representation of the different container sizes. The actual size/ages of plants are estimates and will vary based on; type of plant, time of year, last pruning & many other factors. These shrubs can grow up to 6 feet wide. So plant these 6 feet apart, center to center, at the very minimum. These plants go great next to garden bridges and in planters as well. Plant these shrubs in a protected area with partial shade, meaning the space gets between 2 and 4 hours of sunlight each day. You should have nutrient rich soil that is moist but well drained. Be sure not to plant in an area that stays wet all the time, as the plants will get root rot. But hydrangeas do need a lot of water and moist soil to perform their best. The Endless Summer Blushing Bride Hydrangea, hydrangea macrophylla Blushing Bride, is a compact hydrangea that has pure white blooms in early spring. The flowers eventually turn to blush pink or Carolina blue depending on the pH of the soil, and last until late fall. Donโ€™t forget that Endless Summer hydrangeas bloom both on new and old wood, which sets these shrubs apart from other hydrangeas! The leaves are thick and dark green, and have the traditional serrated edges that most macrophylla have. This plants creates perfect flowers for cut arrangements for centerpieces or even wedding bouquets! And because these shrubs are reblooming you can enjoy the blooms from late spring to late fall! Hydrangea macrophylla โ€˜Glam Rockโ€™ (Horwack) plants

This stunning variety is one of the most eye catching hydrangeas available. The rounded flower heads are formed by dozens of red florets with blue centres, each petal tipped with an extraordinary shade of lime green. Found as a chance seedling, this incredible variety is repeat flowering producing a second flush of flowers later in the season. As with many varieties, Hydrangea macrophylla โ€˜Glam Rockโ€™ produces widely different colour tones depending on the soil pH. If the soil is neutral to alkaline (a pH of 7 to 14) then flowers will be more pink-red-green. In acid soils (pH less than 7) the flowers will tend to be more purple-blue-green in their colouration, with blooms being bluer, the lower the pH gets. In addition to this, Hydrangeas are well known for their flowers changing colour as the season progresses. These colour changes can be quite dramatic from bud break to mature bloom. This robust, hardy shrub makes a superb addition to borders or large patio containers. Height and spread: 120cm (48โ€ณ). Useful links: How to grow hydrangeas Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only. The blue flowers will take on a pink hue as they fade through autumn and may also be affected by alkaline tap water or soil. For the deepest blue flowers right through the season we recommend the use of Hydrangea Colourant

Hydrangea macrophylla โ€˜Fanfareโ€™ WEDDING RING

Culture Best grown in rich, medium moisture, well-drained soils in part shade. Tolerates full sun only if grown in consistently moist soils. Soil pH affects the flower color of most cultivars except white (blue in highly acidic soils and lilac to pink in slightly acidic to alkaline soils). Add aluminum sulfate to the soil to make the flowers bluer or add lime to the soil to make the flowers pinker. Begin soil treatments well in advance of flowering, as in late autumn or early spring. Plants generally need little pruning. If needed, prune immediately after flowering by cutting back flowering stems to a pair of healthy buds. Prune out weak or winter-damaged stems in late winter/early spring. Best to mulch plants year-round with 3โ€ณ of shredded bark, peat or compost. Winter hardy to USDA Zone 6. For added protection, however, plants grown in USDA Zone 5 should be sited in sheltered locations and given additional winter protection, as needed, for the purposes of minimizing the risk of loss of significant numbers of flower buds or possible die-back to the ground in an extremely harsh winter. A burlap wrap of stems or circle of chicken wire filled with leaves or straw to 8-12โ€ณ are time-consuming and visually unattractive landscape options, but can be effective. Regardless of protective measures taken, most bigleaf hydrangeas simply will not bloom (or will bloom poorly) in some years because of a variety of winter occurrences beyond the control of the gardener (e.g. low temperatures, sudden wide temperature fluctuations, icy conditions, late frosts). Some newer cultivars have been selected that flower on both old and new wood. Their pruning and flowering can differ from that of the species. Hydrangea macrophylla โ€˜Fanfareโ€™ WEDDING RING reportedly has better winter hardiness (adapts well to USDA Zone 5 winters) than many of the H. macrophylla cultivars currently available in commerce.
