If I Knew Then Poem, by DesertWords, at My poetic side

If I knew then what I know now

I would have found a way somehow

to take my share and bear the load

to walk together down that road

but youth and immaturity

did not allow my eyes to see.

Now time has passed, the clock runs on

it’s far too late to sing my song

but if I knew then I would surely try

to pluck a star from the velvet sky

and braid it into your golden hair

to prove to you how much I care.

And now…now it’s far too late

to wish that I could set things straight

to think that we might roll back time

to hope that you might be inclined

to set aside your bitterness

forgive my foolish selfishness

Someday I’ll write a poem for you

honest words long overdue

the shame and sadness of my life

are the memories that invade my nights

dreams that taunt me with “somehow”

if I knew then what I know now.

If I Knew Then, What I Know Now Poem by david lessard

I know now

what I didn’t know then,

but it’s too late,

and I have other things to tend.

Now I know

why things went wrong,

It’s because we sang

a different song.

Words don’t matter now,

So I’ll not speak;

It’s way to late,

To turn the other cheek.

If I knew then,

what I know now;

It wouldn’t change

My feelings anyhow.

You can’t change destiny,

This thing called fate;

All one can do,

Is change their mate.

If I Knew Then What I Know Now…

I would listen more carefully to what my heart says.

I would enjoy more…worry less.

I would know that school would end soon enough…and work would…well, never mind.

I wouldn’t worry so much about what other people were thinking.

I would appreciate all my vitality and tight skin.

I would play more, fret less.

I would know that my beauty/handsomeness is in my love of life.

I would know how much my parents love me and I would believe that they are doing the best they can.

I would enjoy the feeling of “being in love” and not worry so much about how it works out.

I would know that it probably won’t…but that something better will come along.

I wouldn’t be afraid of acting like a kid.

I would be braver.

I would look for the good qualities in everyone and enjoy them for those.

I would not hang out with people just because they’re “popular”.

I would take dance lessons.

I would enjoy my body just the way it is.

I would trust my girlfriends.

I would be a trustworthy girlfriend.

I wouldn’t trust my boyfriends.(just kidding!!)

I would enjoy kissing. Really enjoy it.

I would be more appreciative and grateful, for sure.

– Kimberly Kirberger

If I Knew Then What I Know Now, poem by Nina Bennett (IF I Poetry and Prose Series)

If I Knew Then What I Know Now

by Nina Bennett

If I could have envisioned a squalling son who

nursed every two hours, didn’t sleep through the night

until he was six, scorned the authority

of middle-school teachers, spent a college

visitation weekend getting high, parked

his car in front of my house, driver’s side door gone,

would I have snuggled close that crisp October night,

whispered yes when my husband pushed into me, paused,

asked if we should make another child.

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: After one of those generic, decades-long girlfriend conversations about would we have made different life decisions if we’d had a crystal ball, including would we have had children if we had known what it would really be like, I saw the “If I” call for submissions. The squalling son has grown into a wonderful man!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Delaware native Nina Bennett is the author of Sound Effects (2013, Broadkill Press Key Poetry Series). Her poetry has been nominated for the Best of the Net, and has appeared or is forthcoming in publications that include Gargoyle, Napalm & Novocain, Houseboat, Bryant Literary Review, Yale Journal for Humanities in Medicine, Philadelphia Stories, and The Broadkill Review. Awards include 2014 Northern Liberties Review Poetry Prize and second-place in poetry book category from the Delaware Press Association (2014). Nina is a founding member of the TransCanal Writers (Five Bridges, A Literary Anthology).

Poets & Writers Live is an initiative developed in response to interviews and discussions with writers from all over the country. When we asked what Poets & Writers could do to support their writing practice, time and again writers expressed a desire for a more tangible connection to other writers. So, we came up with a living, breathing version of what Poets & Writers already offers: Poets & Writers Live.

Shane Koyczan – More Often Than Sometimes

If I knew what I know now then, way back when we first met,I’d point to the sunset and say,“I drew that for you. Every now and then you can catch it wrinkling in the rain.”See I can talk a good game from the stage, but if you want to gage a romantic thing said when we were messing up the bed the best I can give you is,“Oh my God we’re totally humping.”Regardless, there’s something beautiful about stating the obvious. All of us do it. In the moments when we can’t believe it we have to say it.It’s like pinching yourself to make sure you’re awake.Take, for example, something as simple as touching someone. We so often say, “You’re so soft.”And the last person to touch them may have said it for the twenty-eighth time but today, I’m number twenty-nineand I’m not saying it for her benefit, I’m saying it for mine.Because there’s almost 7 billion people in the world, half of which are men, and when the number of them is 3.5 billion,it’s pretty fuckin’ cool that I was number twenty-nine.And once upon a time I was first in line for a girl with freckles and strawberry blonde hair.We loved like an electric chair hooked up to a nuclear power plant and plugged into the sun, and everything we did had never been done.I woke up the next morning with a smile that told the world, “I’m number one.”I think of her, more often than sometimes, and if she ever hears this I want her to know that our first kiss tasted like pepper.I met her on June 27th. That year it was Yellowknife’s first day of continual light and, despite the sun not setting that night,we each went home alone, even though our parents told us, “Be home before dark.”We could’ve stayed out for weeks, could’ve watched the way the sun leaks like liquid over the horizon, casting shadows over all the right places of a bargain bin where love was 75% off, and we were collectively 25¢ away from forever. There are times in the North when the sun never sets. And it gets confusing when we ask ourselves questions like,“Is it too late, or too early?”More often than sometimes we didn’t care.We lived like two games of solitaire waiting to be played by one another. Her mother once asked me, “Do you love her?”And I said if there were 1 million teachers breathing down my neck telling me that the answer is no, I would say yes.I guess that was enough for her, because that girl’s father palmed me a condom and wished me a happy birthday.Even now there’s no way to tell, was that awkward or creepy? We loved like two hit-men hellbent on assassinating regret. Her orgasm was a wet gremlin multiplying itself into another. Her younger brother knocked on the bedroom door asking, “What are you guys doing in there?”And somewhere amid the awesome and all of the in between we replied in unison, “Studying.”And we were.I wrote notes on her skin in flesh toned permanent ink that would sink and sit inside as I tried to underline the important parts of her: bellybutton, birthmark, collarbone. And I wrote notes explaining that hers felt like silk stretched over stone.I told her, “You’re so soft.” She smiled and said, “Duh.” followed by, “My bellybutton is not an erogenous zone.”And I said, “I hate that word,” and she asked, “Which one?” and I said, “Erogenous.” I told her, “There’s beauty in the obvious, and your bellybutton is where you started, it’s where cells divided and grew into you so let me do what students do best, you can test me later but right now let me study.” She said, “You’re lucky this is a take home test, boy.”I highlighted and double underlined. Lips.
