Shi Yi is back in Zhenjiang (her hometown as well) for a holiday. There’s a traffic jam because a lot of investors are heading into the city (for Zhousheng Chen’s meeting). Shi Yi’s Dad compliments the CEO for enriching their city. Shi Yi happily agrees with Dad. Yes, what a nice General CEO he is for protecting the city. It’s his life’s calling .

Zhousheng Chen contemplates on whether to phone Shi Yi (or maybe he’s mentally rehearsing the conversation). The phone call starts like this: he knows she’s back in the city, he also knows her license plate, her family information like how the car belongs to her father. Not creepy . Then he gets to the main point: “I need to be engaged.” Shi Yi’s heart shatters. She musters her best Congratulations. Thankfully, he clarifies: “Shi Yi, would you be willing to be engaged with me?” Just checking, Ep3 out of Ep30 .

He thinks they’re not strangers anymore. So why not be engaged? Lol . She can reject him if she wants, given she can probably meet better men than him. Shi Yi almost automatically replies there is no better man than him. Seeing a glimmer of hope, Zhousheng Chen explains he’s slow to warm, “Towards an ‘object’, it usually takes me a while to generate feelings” – he really is speaking like a robot . If she ever finds him unsuitable, she can cancel the engagement anytime she wants.

Shi Yi accepts the engagement! Of course she does. And silence, we meet again. Shi Yi thought he hung up on her. Zhousheng Chen is in disbelief on the other end. Zhousheng Chen’s traditional Good morning/afternoon/night is probably a throwback to Shi Yi’s greetings to him in Ep2. Remember how she insisted on bowing/greeting him twice a day and he was like Save me . It’s funny how he’s the one doing it this lifetime.

Shi Yi’s aunt . It’s nice to see that in this lifetime, she’s happy with her husband. Previously, Cui Wen Ji never got to marry the man she loves who was Zhousheng Chen’s uncle.

[ Ep5 ] Shi Yi asks Zhousheng Chen why he didn’t call in the afternoon. He apologizes; he was busy. Then he coughs. Worried, she tells him to hang up so that he can take medication but then she spots him downstairs at her recording studio. He’s here to pick her up after work – he sacrificed a lot of sleep to get here. But he’s not the one driving . And look at him holding her purse in such an endearingly awkward fashion.

Zhousheng Chen, our professor, treats most things like it’s research – he can even apply it to dating. When Shi Yi asks what if his research direction¹ on their relationship is wrong, he corrects her that her approach to this question is wrong. There’s no right or wrong in research. Connecting this logic to their relationship, it’s already a fact that they’re together and if something happens in the middle, they can always adjust their methods to maintain their relationship.

Shi Yi invites Zhousheng Chen to her home with pure intentions – she wants to feed him Chinese medicine. Still, he’s wary because he wants to take their relationship slowly, especially after he rushed their engagement. However, he admits that he did want to see her place. Minutes later, she’s shooing him away. It’s because she learns he has to head back to Zhenjiang and he won’t be getting much sleep if he stays any longer. But she just gave him bitter Chinese medicine to drink for his cold. He gulps it down, obviously hating the bitterness, but for her, he’ll suck it up. We learn from Driver Lin that Zhousheng Chen hated Chinese herbal tea since childhood.

Zhousheng Chen doesn’t go home immediately. He’s downstairs watching how long it takes for her to shower, which is approximately 25 minutes. Not creepy at all. So there are these numbers he can learn too, eh .

Shi Yi has something she doesn’t like since childhood too: the colour red. She died in red . Another interesting tidbit: Zhousheng Chen’s mother never had a proper marriage with Dad.

Zhousheng Chen learns to drive for Shi Yi. He’s slow at driving, but at least he arrives before Shi Yi’s award ceremony ends. He catches Shi Yi on stage, awarding Best Documentary to 如故 (Ru-gu). Half of the prequel’s title .

Zhousheng Chen was always the fastest on his horse and now he’s a slowpoke with a luxurious car xD. Still, if he promises to arrive, he’ll be there, haha

All this long distance relationship is a parallel to Zhousheng Chen fighting at the borders. Cui Shiyi and Zhousheng Chen spent more time apart than together but that had no effect on their love.

[ Ep6 ] In the car, Shi Yi feeds Zhousheng Chen candy. His lips lightly touch her fingers. They both tense up in this enclosed space. Needing fresh air, he asks her if she prefers opening the window or turning on the AC. She chooses the former, and so Zhousheng Chen reaches over to open the window. Shi Yi is flustered at how close he is. Does he not have controls on his side? Omg, I hope he’s okay driving . Opening the window isn’t at all a relief to the tension that’s within their hearts.

Zhousheng Chen has a present for Shi Yi. It’s a watch made of meteorite. A watch is also a very fitting present for these two whose names revolve around time . Zhousheng Chen has also confirmed that Shi Yi’s shower time can last up to 38 minutes. ???

Zhousheng Chen waits outside Shi Yi’s condominium in the morning to have breakfast for her. She already ate but she invites him upstairs to make breakfast for him. It’s cereal. [ Ep9 ] Zhousheng Chen takes Shi Yi upstairs to see the scenery. Shi Yi has a fear of heights. Of course she would. Zhousheng Chen wraps her in his arms, giving her security. They’re this close to kissing and cue the interruption: Zhou Wen Xing.

Zhousheng Chen takes Shi Yi to visit his grandmother – the elder who he values the most. Grandma gives Shi Yi a bracelet with a pearl; it’s a memento of Zhousheng Chen’s late mother, his birth mother. And now Shi Yi learns about his biological family. His father left Zhou family to marry his mother ( Qin Wen Jin ). When his mother passed away, Dad married the current Mom as per his family wishes so that Zhousheng Chen could properly be in Zhou family. The current Mom is Zhou Wen Chuan and Zhou Wen Xing’s mother. Grandma is the mother of the current Mom but she always treated Zhousheng Chen and his mother like they were family. After hearing his story, Shi Yi realizes Zhousheng Chen has no one related to him in this family. For you and for myself:

Zhousheng Chen wants the car keys from Driver Lin but Lin would rather give it to Shi Yi. Even though he hasn’t seen her drive, anyone would be better than our slowpoke Zhousheng Chen. Indeed, she’s pretty skilled (or looks skilled, lol). I’m thinking back to O&O and if Shi Yi had access to education like Zhousheng Chen, she could easily beat up the guys. She was good with archery just by training on her own. Sometimes I wonder if our modern leads are really that different from O&O .

They’re back in the car (Driver Lin is driving). Shi Yi signals Zhousheng Chen to pull up the divider so that Driver Lin can’t see them. She begins the conversation, asking about the ring exchange during their engagement. Then she asks what about after the exchange, does he need to kiss his fiancée? Our shy slowpoke never thought of that. Well, think of that now. Shi Yi tells him to come closer and to close his eyes. Flustered, he lightly licks his lips and closes his eyes. She initiates the kiss. Zhousheng Chen kisses her back. Lalala. Oopsie-daisy, the dividers accidentally scrolled down. Right, Driver Lin? Lol . Our couple fly apart, and Zhousheng Chen, as casually as he can, flips through a magazine titled “Everyday Mindfulness”, and reads it upside down. Shi Yi initiates once again ~ Then again, she was the one who did all the (indirect) confessions in their past life too .

While Shi Yi is waiting for a text from Zhousheng Chen after that (not-so-secretive-)secret kiss in the car, our socially awkward guy is outside her room, timing her shower again!!! Omg, this fetish of his. This is not the time for that! He notices she’s not taking her shower even after ten minutes of entering her room. Well, isn’t that odd. Later that night, neither can sleep. They hover around the door, wanting to see each other, but neither are courageous enough.

Early in the morning, Zhousheng Chen needs to run. Heh . Then he comes back for a shower and Shi Yi is just heading out. She asks him to join her “morning (辰 chen) run”. He goes like it’s the first time he ran today. When they’re catching a break, Shi Yi admits she couldn’t sleep last night but denies it had anything to do with him. He also lies that he slept through the night. More like tossed and turned the entire night.

The best way to win a love rival (not that the guy is considered one) is to make him greet you 爷爷 and 奶奶 and that’s how this dude who flirted with Shi Yi and ridiculed Zhousheng Chen has to greet them. Calling young ones “grandpa” and “grandma” (in English) might be an insult with ageism connotation but in Chinese, it’s about respect. No better way to force someone to pay their respect by having them call you 爷爷 / 奶奶 .

O&O:

Shi Yi is afraid of heights when she (Cui Shiyi) used to stand atop a roof to admire the snow fall. However, it’s completely understandable after she committed suicide from a high tower.

Mom is sorta like Empress Dowager. Will she seduce someone this lifetime too? xD

The moment they’re standing at the doors remind me of Ep13 where they’re also separated by a door. This time it’s cute – they’re shy about expressing their love. The last time was kinda heartbreaking – they’re forced to suppress their love

[ Ep10 ] Zhousheng Ren doesn’t let anyone sit in his car but he does let Shi Yi use it. He even eagerly joins her to meet her family. He meets Shi Yuan Yuan , Shi Yi’s younger cousin. This little dude is funny and cute .

The engagement party is canceled/postponed. Tong Xiao Fu (the pregnant woman) had a preterm labour and is in critical condition. She sustained the injury at the engagement showcase (the party before the party?). Zhousheng Chen is solemnly apologetic to Shi Yi. She diverts his attention by telling him to cheer her up since she’s the one who should be upset. Zhousheng asks her to teach him. She laughs. I guess that worked? He has a logical reason for asking her. He can try all he wants but all may fail but, on the other hand, if she tells him exactly how then it’s guaranteed to work. And so, she asks him for a truthful answer: Did he really sleep all night last night? Sighing, he confesses: Not a wink. Shi Yi smiles brightly.

More family problems arise. Shi Yi’s side realizes Zhousheng Chen’s mother doesn’t like Shi Yi. Zhou Sheng Chen explains to her family that it’s not Shi Yi his mother dislikes – it’s him.

Shi Yi cheers up Zhousheng Chen. Puzzled, he asks her why she’s making him happy when it’s him who’s at fault. The answer is simple: he’s more upset than her.

Grandma makes Shi Yi stay the night. Zhousheng Chen and Shi Yi are to sleep in one room together, but he sneaks out to take the couch. Shi Yi texts him, hinting for him to come back but he doesn’t get it. Grumpily (and cutely) she drags him back inside.

[ Ep11 ] Shi Yi casually invites Zhousheng Chen to share the bed – they’ll just sleep back to back. Well, she breaks that rule pretty soon. It’s not what you think. She just wants to chat with this guy and break his one-question-one-answer replies. She teaches him how to continue a conversation and then it turns scientific, omg lol . Zhousheng Chen wants to close the window because it’s raining and it’s cold. Shi Yi stops him. She likes the sound, and as for the cold, “Aren’t there blankets and you?” Shi Yi smiles and snuggles in the blanket. Feeling all fuzzy and warm from within the depth of his soul, he gives his side of the blanket to her too. He says he’s not cold. Dude is hot, hot, hot . But Shi Yi wouldn’t leave him in the cold without a blanket. And Shi Yi even tells him to turn around. She wants to sleep facing him. I think Zhousheng Chen has always felt ‘cold’ and lonely growing up in Zhou family. When Shi Yi tells him he’s her warmth, she doesn’t know she’s also showering her warmth to him with her love .

In the morning, Zhousheng Chen slips a coin in Shi Yi’s hand. When Shi Yi wakes up, she fibs that she picked up the coin from the blanket. Zhousheng Chen merely laughs and calls her lucky.

He slipped a 2011 coin in the heart of her palm. ‘520’ means I love you and so ’20’ itself means love you. 11 is Shi Yi. Therefore 2011 = Love you Shi Yi. The coin also has a value of 1 and so therefore Shi Yi is his One and Only? The unending explanations, lol .

In front of grandma, Zhousheng Chen proposes to Shi Yi to register their marriage. Very casually. Just like that. A marriage! I guess the “2011” was a confession?? xD Zhousheng Chen doesn’t quite understand the storm he’s creating in Shi Yi’s heart. She needs time to think as she isolates herself in his room. But soon, she’s back. She hands her house keys to Driver Lin with instructions on where her ID is. A marriage it is!

Zhousheng Chen reminds Shi Yi their wedding anniversary is May 11th. It’s to match her name. May is the 5th month so it sounds like wu which sounds 我 (wo) which means “I” and therefore May 11th is Mine (Zhousheng Chen’s) and Shi Yi’s anniversary. Chinese. The language where we can convey meaning with numbers . Shi Yi is like No wonder it had to be today. Zhousheng Chen laughs that he’s grateful he had this excuse, otherwise he wouldn’t be able to explain his erratic behaviour. Oops, did he just give himself away? (; Awkwardly, he exits the room to shower but he does leave behind a ring. This guy does everything, but it’s all done so awkwardly. It’s like a checkbox. Hold hands. Kiss. Sleep. Marriage. Ring. Check, check, check . Our shy boy doesn’t even come back in the room to sleep with his wife.

Grandma cheerfully drops the news to Zhou family that Zhousheng Cheng and Shi Yi are married. Not one member is cheerful except Zhousheng Ren. Mom Zhou privately warns Shi Yi that she won’t approve of their marital status.

O&O: ” Aren’t there blankets and you? ” Would this be referring to the time he carried her to bed while wrapping her in a blanket? (Ep3)

Zhousheng Chen has always been stranded and lonely in his family. Actually, he barely ever had a family. When he was a prince, he was sent to the outskirts of the country. He even had to relinquish his marriage for the sake of “family”. Now that he’s an heir to his aristocratic family, he is still alone. This time, though, he’s not relinquishing his marriage. He won’t forsaken Shi Yi anymore.

[ Ep12 ] Zhousheng Chen’s family friend bestows calligraphy to the newlyweds. Shi Yi returns a present: she paints a lotus flower. Everyone marvels. Shi Yi tells Zhousheng Chen that for a long time, she always liked drawing lotuses. She’s not that great at painting humans. This reminds her of Cui Shiyi (the character she’s dubbing) and how they’re alike. For Cui Shiyi, whenever she drew lotus flowers, she was thinking of Junior Prince of Nanchen. She never drew people because she was afraid others would know she loves him.

Zhousheng Chen takes Shi Yi to see Junior Prince of Nanchen – the name in his ancestral book. So….like Zhousheng is reborn in his own line? Note: Drama won’t be obvious with the reincarnation theme because it can’t. Zhousheng Chen asks about the airport that day. Shi Yi flirts that he can think of it as her falling in love at first sight. She cutely complains how it wasn’t the same for him. Zhousheng Chen, without an ounce of wit, answers that it really wasn’t love at first sight for him. Unaware he offended his wife, he’s equally unaware that he just melted her heart by saying he gradually fell in love with her.

In both lifetimes, Shi Yi fell in love at first sight with him and Zhou Sheng Chen gradually fell in love with her. What I really like about this dialogue is the added depth to their names.

The idioms used:

Their names in the idiom:

Time in their names and the idiom:

钟 (zhong) in 一见钟情 means clock; 时 (shi) in 时宜 means time 久 (jiu; long) in 日久生情 is often represented in numbers as 9 (jiu) and it would also be the number I’d associate with Zhou if I had to pick one.

One of the books is Genomes. You Are My Glory has tainted me. I can’t help but think about genes influencing or blending with each other. And now Drama even has a book to visualize this 👏👏 Ha, I like this because I was holding back on ruining the romance by commenting they could totally pull the books apart. And she just confirmed it doesn’t work. But is it really that hard? Lemme go find a genome book now! (Update: It’s hard) Zhousheng Chen uses two books as an analogy of their love. Although they’re different books, as they each flip a page (to know each other more) their pages will overlap, and be one.. When Zhousheng Chen leaves, Shi Yi picks up the blended books. With all her mighty strength she tries to pull them apart but the books are like glued together.

Mom Zhou doesn’t approve of the marriage with Shi Yi because Shi Yi cannot support Zhousheng Chen. If Mom Zhou doesn’t find a wife with a high social status, then Zhousheng Chen cannot contend in Zhou family at all. Mom Zhou is being considerate of Zhousheng Chen who’s all alone in this family. Oh wut, Mom is a nice one? But the marriage is already a fact and so Mom Zhou signs all the papers to transfer Dad Zhou’s shares to Zhousheng Chen. Mei Xing is his trusty representative. (And pitiful Zhou Wen Chuan finds himself in a useless marriage now that the company belongs to his brother)

Zhousheng Chen will be abroad in Germany for two months. Driver Lin goads him that if he leaves too long, Shi Yi will be snatched away. He also mentions that if it weren’t for Shi Yi, no one would want him. Zhousheng Chen laughs and agrees that someone like him is certainly a misfit for marriage. Driver Lin corrects him that yes, he’s not suitable for dating, but marriage, Zhousheng Chen is perfect like no other.

Zhousheng Chen puts on his marriage ring. Inside, there’s an engraving: April 7th, which is the Chinese lunar calendar equivalent of May 11th (2019).

O&O: Hong Xiao Yu finds her Cui Feng! I don’t know his name yet (in this drama)

[ Ep13 ] Germany. Tong Jia Ren is drunk and a coworker sends her to Zhousheng Chen’s place. When she sobers up, she tells Zhousheng Cheng she’s divorced, then she asks Zhousheng Chen the reason for his speedy marriage. Ah, this girl thinks he married to make her jealous. Girl, I’m awed at your delusions . His replies crumble her hopes. First he calls her a stranger who doesn’t need to know his decisions. Then he indirectly tells her that all these years he refused to marry her isn’t just because he values marriage but because he values who he’s marrying. He uses an idiom that normally translates to “it’s nothing personal”. However. he reversed it, and so now it means “it’s everything personal (that I’m not marrying you” .

Shi Yi arrives in Germany to visit her “husband”. Mei Xing finally sees her – the woman whose appearance is engraved in his heart. Mei Xing, you stay good, alright. It’s not a question. It’s a demand . Shi Yi only has eyes for her dorky Zhousheng Chen, obviously. Mei Xing isn’t just a big fat (good looking) light bulb hovering around our newly weds; he’s here as a lawyer to have Shi Yi sign documents to transfer Zhousheng Chen’s assets to her. \

Mei Xing has a courtesy name (Google: a name bestowed upon one at adulthood in addition to one’s given name, stressing a moral principle) . It’s Mei Ru Gu. The same rugu has the Chinese title of One and Only . Shi Yi had a nice poem to explain his name: willow trees and lotus flowers wither but plums (mei) remain the same. I’m hoping that also means he’s going to stay loyal . Mei Xing informs Shi Yi of Zhousheng Chen’s courtesy name: Chang Feng⁴ (Forever Wind). His name is derived from a poem that alludes to his past as a general – the strong force like wind and wave that gushed through the lonely mountains. I paraphrased .

Shi Yi buys Zhousheng Chen a bouquet. Because the girl wants to. I love her . She remembers he’s allergic so I think she got him synthetic dried up flowers. Shi Yi has jetlag. She invites Zhousheng Chen to bed and asks him to coax her to sleep by reciting her poems. Eventually her eyes closes. He falls asleep too. When they wake up, she’s in his arms. Shi Yi reaches out to touch his forehead, the gap between his eyebrows.

Shi Yi : No matter how flawless the skin is, it will age but you in my heart will remain beautiful. I can see the beauty within your bones

Her poetic speech reminds him of a verse in Shanglin Fu. It’s also the same line he thought of when he first met her at the airport:

Extraordinary, different from conventions, a beauty so bewitching and refined.

I paraphrased a teeny bit at the end. Guys, this is hard!

O&O: So far this episode is the closest we can get to the reincarnation theme. Zhousheng Chen was supposed to recite poems to lull Shi Yi to sleep. But once he thinks she’s asleep, he cheats a bit by counting: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Shi Yi (11)? This is the first time he called her Shi Yi (Eleven) as in the way General Zhousheng Chen would call Cui Shiyi .

[ Ep14 ] Hong Xiao Yu’s new guy’s name is Du Feng (reincarnated from Cui Feng) .

Zhou Wen Chuan deliberately makes Shi Yi uneasy by returning Zhousheng Chen’s ring that he found from Tong Jia Ren. Why did I pity this guy? Shi Yi has unwavering faith in Zhousheng Chen. Plus, why would Zhousheng Chen give his wedding band that has their wedding anniversary engraved in it to another woman? Zhousheng Chen explains to Shi Yi everything about Tong Jia Ren. They had an engagement but it was cancelled because her older sister married Uncle Zhousheng. As if Zhou family wasn’t already complicated enough, Zhousheng Ren is the son of Tong Jia Ren’s sister, which means Tang Jia Ren is Ren’s maternal aunt …and his step-sister-in-law. Well ex step-sister-in-law .

From a coworker, Shi Yi learns the meteorite that her watch is made of was a present from Zhousheng Chen’s respected professor. It was meant to be for his future wife. In Chinese there’s a popular saying ‘to grab the stars from the sky’ for the person you love. Zhousheng Chen did just that. Lol. I find this funny. He l.i.t.e.r.a.l.l.y did that. This boring man gave her a star – a meteorite. A real star. Zhousheng Chen’s boring romantic ways are tickling me .

A gang fight breaks out in Germany. So random. But was it random? Shi Yi was almost injured, and was certainly frightened from the incident. Zhousheng Chen’s research is also running into problems, apparently delaying his return to China. There’s too many coincidences that Zhousheng Chen wants Shi Yi to return to China for her safety. He doesn’t tell her, though. He asks what he can do to make her happier. Some loving words would help. Shi Yi initiates by asking if he finds her pretty. He’s silent, and so she awkwardly adds that perhaps there’s someone prettier than her. Zhousheng Chen assertively denies this one. There’s no other girl as beautiful as her. Our slowpoke Zhousheng Chen, stutters in his movement as he kisses her cheek. Shi Yi anticipates another kiss on the lips, but he’s more concerned about her wet hair. A slowpoke, indeed . Still, Shi Yi loves this man.

The next morning, Shi Yi eats the breakfast Zhousheng Chen carefully prepared for her (like noodle by noodle…) and then tells her when he’s back in China they’ll sleep in the same room. Shi Yi chokes. Too fast, man. The girl cannot grasp your speed . Shi Yi teases him that she can’t let him in her room yet because as long as they’re not married (ceremony), they’re not officially husband and wife. Zhousheng Chen can’t hide his disappointment as he repeats twice that he doesn’t mind taking the living room. Smirking, Shi Yi changes the topic to his breakfast because only she is eating. There’s a three hour* difference between them – he already ate. Shi Yi is like, “Right, your family wakes up at 5am to eat.” I think Zhousheng Chen is disappointed at her choice of words: “your family” .

*Three hour difference. This is perhaps referring to their names. The time of chen is 7-9am. Shi Yi is 11. If we say the average time of chen is 8 then there really is a three hour difference between them .

O&O:

Just who is Zhou Wen Chuan’s reincarnation? The Emperor? He was misled by a minister but in the end, he was a good guy.

[ Ep15 ] Du Feng is a police officer. His team is investigating Zhousheng Chen. Whaa . Is that why he’s approaching Hong Xiao Yu? I think he’s genuinely interested in her but in the meantime he’s using her for his investigation. Not a good combo .

Once Shi Yi is available to talk on the phone, Zhousheng Chen begins his report of when he woke up, what he ate, the water that seeped in. OMG . Meanwhile Shi Yi updates him that there’s someone trying to pursue her (it’s her coworker). Does Zhousheng Chen mind? Of course. He even remembers that guy’s name.

Shi Yi is afraid of the dark – she’s actually afraid of a lot of things. She used to dream a lot and it disturbed her sleep. She constantly woke up at night. She had to get treatment for it. She’s better now but she’s still afraid of the dark. Well, now she has Zhousheng Chen’s voice to put her to sleep while she’s on a business trip. That’s not all! Zhousheng Chen sent her a little protector: Zhousheng Ren. No wonder our kiddo is sticking to her ~ And that’s not all!! Zhousheng Chen is here! He can’t let another man have a chance or even a glimmer of hope with Shi Yi. After Shi Yi introduces her husband to her boss, it seems to have unlocked Zhousheng Chen’s heart ~ He intimately hugs her around the waist. Both are damp from the rain. Water is dripping from his bangs. She reaches out to touch his nose-bridge, trailing her finger to the tip. As he touches her hair drenched from rain, she’s touching his button, and freeing his skin from beneath ~

Zhousheng Chen : Don’t turn up the temperature too much, we’ll be sweating later.

O&O: (Ep12) On the boat, there were girls flirting with Zhousheng Chen and so Cui Shiyi clutched onto her man’s arm. The paddler called him her “husband”. In this life, Zhousheng Chen is claiming his woman while Shi Yi can finally, righteously, call him her husband.

(Ep19) Zhousheng Ren and Shi Yi sitting down to read and write reminds me that they were once teacher and student in their past life

(Ep11) I like the way he hugged her, resting his face on her shoulder. It’s as if to remind us that he had touched her bare shoulders through a cloth in their past life. There’s a continuity in the tension from their past life that has accumulated to this life, to this moment

[ Ep16 ] Drama skips the good part and now Shi Yi and Zhousheng Chen have finished sweating. Anyway, I do like how Shi Yi touches his collarbone as he’s speaking. She’s very in love with this rare bone of his . On their walk, we also learn why he watched Step Into The Past (a drama) 79 times. He doesn’t want to waste time watching a new drama just like how he doesn’t want to waste time on any other girl except Shi Yi ~. Shi Yi is his One and Only and Zhousheng Chen is her Forever and Ever .

After a lunch with Hong Xiao Yu and Du Feng, Shi Yi is inebriated. In her drunken speech, she tells Zhousheng Chen she knows he hates business. Patting her chest, she promises that she can handle everything else while he can just do what he loves. She declares, “I am the person you can depend on, the person closest to you.” Zhousheng Chen knows he can trust these words ~ Then it’s raining. He’s trying to wait out the rain because he doesn’t want Shi Yi (who’s sleeping on his lap) to be cold but it’s getting dark. A kind man lends an umbrella (and his hand) to shield Shi Yi from being rained on as Zhousheng Chen carries her home.

Zhousheng Chen puts Shi Yi to sleep. Still drunk, she starts wondering that if she dies first, he’ll have to suffer a bit this lifetime but she’ll be sure to repay him the next life. How? Be his wife again! Again and again. Forever and Ever . He’s silent. Shi Yi complains that she knows he doesn’t believe in after-life or reincarnations. But then Zhousheng Chen accepts her proposals. He’s willing to accept her silly declarations. I think that’s asking a lot from our straight-laced geek who doesn’t know he was a General in his past life .

Shi Yi sleep-talks; she wants a pomegranate. And so the next day Zhousheng Chen drives across the city to buy her the fruit, looking smoking hot on a baby pink motorbike plus helmet combo. He even seeds it for her. Shi Yi gobbles down the fruit without knowing the amount of effort he poured into this bowl of sweetness. Zhousheng Chen is simply happy that she’s happy. When she says it tastes sweet, he smiles even sweeter.

Zhousheng Ren is lonely. His favourite brother (Zhousheng Chen) is back but he’s with his wife. Our Ren can’t interrupt the sweethearts and so he visits Yuan Yuan with his resting pouty face.

Zhou Wen Xing waits for Mei Xing in the rain. He tells her to stay put and stay dry (as much as she can). He’s worried about her health. Before they enter the building, he dries her from the tips of her hair to the bottom ends of her legs.

My episode conclusion: Water shalt not touch our damsels. Rain can kill .

O&O:

(Ep5) Shi Yi’s drunken talk about dying parallels with Cui Shiyi asking shifu what if he dies. Unlike Zhousheng Chen who told Cui Shiyi to not look for his body after his death, Shi Yi tells him to wait for her forever and ever.

(Ep22) Shi Yi’s love for pomegranate remains the same. Zhousheng Chen’s way of loving her also remains the same – deeply and silently.

Zhousheng Ren took Yuan Yuan to the tea factory which may be a nod to all the tea scenes in O&O (e.g. the time when Cui Shiyi was punished by Zhousheng Chen for throwing out perfectly good tea)⁶

[ Ep17 ] Back in Shanghai, at the grocery store, Zhousheng Chen buys Shi Yi’s favourite cereal “Honey Stars”. The Chinese name has 奇 (strange). I think drama is really driving home the message that our slowpoke is a weirdo (a special weirdo) . At night, Zhousheng Chen takes the joke seriously and sleeps on the couch. Shi Yi had to initiate to pull him back into her room. She turns out to be quite an active sleeper regardless if she’s drunk. It might have been better if Zhousheng Chen stuck with the living room .

It’s raining again! There’s no umbrella this time. Well, Zhousheng Chen becomes her umbrella. Still, by the time they’re in the car, they’re both wet. He’s got clothes in the car for her to change into. He waits outside in the rain. After she’s done, she wants him to change too. He’s reluctant until she convinces him that if he catches a cold, she will too. Initially, she nervously looks away but then she starts teasing him to strip slower for her to admire. Zhousheng Chen’s hands freezes at his pants. Shi Yi jokes that she can admire at home too and looks away.

As Zhousheng Chen is driving, he asks her: “Do you like kids?” She does. They both do. And so we get a bed scene! No we don’t. Zhousheng Chen is busy staring at his laptop. What happened to kids? In a silky gown, Shi Yi asks “Didn’t you say you like kids?” He did, which is why he’s considering a western wedding ceremony so that they can have a flower girl and a pageboy. Omg . Not embarrassed at all, Shi Yi excuses herself. Zhousheng Chen’s expression says it all: Did I say something wrong? No. You do you .

Our slowpoke reflects. He gets it! Within the night. Hallelujah . He joins Shi Yi in the bed and lays himself face up.

Zhousheng Chen : I am ready.

Next morning. Yuan Yuan and Shi Yi’s grandparents are here. Zhousheng Chen opens the door in pjs, practically exposing that he and Shi Yi slept together. He awkwardly leaves the condo in his crocs (his says “S.Y 520” = Shi Yi I love you. Meanwhile Shi Yi’s has “ZSC 520”).

[ Ep18 ] Zhousheng Chen is invited to dinner with Shi Yi’s parents. There’s not much Mom can say when Shi Yi says her only choice is Zhousheng Chen. The men are outside playing Go, listening to every word. The girls don’t know they can hear everything in this soundproof-less room. It’s Zhousheng Chen’s and Dad’s little secret.

As our couple is walking, a dog barks at Shi Yi. Zhousheng Chen is scared – not for himself but for her. He’s scared the dog will bite her but Shi Yi is used to it. Cats and dogs snarl at her all the time. A fortune teller had once said that perhaps she wasn’t meant to be born. Zhousheng Chen’s eyebrows knit together. Shi Yi laughs that she’s kidding.

Driver Lin is back! I miss him! And that’s all I get to say ’cause it’s like a ten second scene .

Zhou Wen Chuan proposes to Xiao Man. She accepts.

The security guard and a gardening lady gossip about Shi Yi’s husband living at her home. The gardening lady gives her two cents: fake guys who pretend to be good are worse than playboys. Playboys may lie to pretty girls, but the fake ones aren’t only after their looks (body), but also their money. Lol xD.

[ Ep19 ] Shi Yi is hospitalized but Zhousheng Chen is in Zhenjiang and so he drives as fast as he can back to Shanghai (and I am wondering how fast that is) . Mei Xing is also worried and follows. And thus there are three guys (+ coworker) who all love her and are at the hospital with her. But she loves only her husband. Shi Yi showers Zhousheng Chen with some love: she pecks him on the cheek and snuggles with him on the tiny couch when she has a bed of her own.

Poor Mei Xing is not only brokenhearted, but he probably has a few broken ribs too. On the way home, his car is stopped by thieves. Thankfully, Driver Lin (and Lin Fei) appear to save him. Is this deliberate? Who is behind this? When Zhou Wen Xing finds out, she confronts her brother, Zhou Wen Chuan.

Grandma cries to Mom Zhou. The former apologizes for breaking up Mom Zhou and Uncle Zhousheng.

[ Ep20 ] Shi Yi is at Zhou Family for dinner. Tong Jia Ren is there too. The family doesn’t know she divorced.

Shi Yi and Zhou Wen Xing enjoy a boat ride at night but Shi Yi accidentally falls off the boat. The servant paddling the boat doesn’t know how to swim (rly now) and so Zhou Wen Xing with her frail body dives in to save her sister-in-law. Shi Yi is unconscious and lost in her dream. She dreams of Cui Shiyi. Then she remembers the movie she’s dubbing and cries that it’s such a pity the couple left their love poem incomplete. After a night of fright, Zhousheng Chen finally sees Shi Yi stir in her sleep. She wakes up.

[ Ep21 ] Zhousheng Chen confronts Zhou Wen Chuan if he had anything to do with Shi Yi drowning. On the other hand, Mei Xing thinks this time was truly an accident.

Grandma has developed Alzheimer’s Disease. She thinks Tong Jia Ren is pregnant and forgets Shi Yi.

Mom Zhou is suddenly nice to Shi Yi. But she’s nice with a motive. Mom Zhou uses her kindness to disapprove of Shi Yi’s marriage with Zhousheng Chen. In a kind tone, she tells Shi Yi, she’s not suitable for Zhou family; she can’t handle them. It is for her own good that they dissolve their marriage. The talk ends abruptly when Zhou Wen Xing asks for a lotus painting from Shi Yi. Zhousheng Chen draws it instead. His painting is similar to Shi Yi’s except his lotus is the first of the summer, yet to blossom to its fullest. Zhou Wen Xing muses that his flower must be waiting for Shi Yi’s lotus ~ Zhousheng Chen adds a poem to his painting. It’s a message to Mom Zhou and Shi Yi that his heart will not be tainted by the shackles of his upbringing. He will choose and protect what he loves.

Then at night, Shi Yi seduces her husband ~ until it’s interrupted by the maid ( Lian Sui ) who loves to interrupt. When Zhousheng Chen is called away, Shi Yi’s stomach starts hurting.

O&O:

(Ep24) Zhousheng Chen’s last words to Shi Yi were in a poem: “Chen in this one life lived up to the world but failed Shi Yi”. In this episode he uses a poem to say the exact opposite. In this lifetime, he will never fail Shi Yi for the world.

[ Ep22 ] Zhou Wen Xing is sick to the point that she’s bedridden. Shi Yi is also very sick – she has appendicitis. She soon recovers.

Du Feng and Hong Xiao Yu are dating. Uh…we’re not investigating anymore? Confused.

Zhousheng Ren misses Zhousheng Chen and Shi Yi and so he brings the party to Shi Yi’s place in Shanghai. Party includes Yuan Yuan (of course), Grandma, Lian Sui, and Lin Fei. They all want to sleep over at their place, especially Zhousheng Ren. Although Grandma doesn’t remember Shi Yi, every time Grandma sees her, she loves her again.

Shi Yi and Zhousheng Chen sleep in the study room. He takes the floor and she takes the couch. However, Shi Yi much rather snuggle with him on the floor. She whispers, “I love you.” Zhousheng Chen is momentarily silent until he tells her their wedding will be held in November (11, just in case y’all don’t get it by now) . That’s not the answer Shi Yi wanted. But that is Zhousheng Chen’s answer. This man is reborn for a purpose – to marry her like she had asked as Cui Shiyi .

Everyone pities Shi Yi for marrying below her class. It’s not just the security guard and the gardening lady who think lowly of Zhousheng Chen, but also his coworkers. They spare him meat, thinking he’s something like a bum.

O&O: (Ep11) Cui Shiyi would never take the more comfortable bed if her shifu was sleeping on the floor. It’s the same for Shi Yi who’d take the floor with him (and the tight couch in the episode where she was hospitalized) . [ Ep23 ] Hong Xiao Yu and Du Feng are in marriage talks. Shi Yi thinks it’s early. But who is the girl who engaged first and kissed second? Shi Yi contends that she was at least e-pen-pals with Zhousheng Chen for six months. More like destined ever since their past life . ] Hong Xiao Yu and Du Feng are in marriage talks. Shi Yi thinks it’s early. But who is the girl who engaged first and kissed second? Zhou Wen Chuan visits Zhou Wen Xing in the hospital who is very sick and is in line for a heart transplant. He brought food with him. Tagging along is Xiao Man who is pregnant. Fast. Does Mom Zhou know he is divorced and remarried and is going to be a dad soon? Overnight, Zhou Wen Xing’s condition worsens because of an argument with Zhou Wen Chuan. He also fabricated lab results to delay Zhou Wen Xing’s surgery to take the attention away from him and his embezzlement. Dude, you’re going to be a dad soon… .

Currently, Zhou Wen Xing is in critical condition. She may not make it. Zhousheng Chen’s heart is breaking for his sister. And she’s not even his ‘full’ sister! Sadness cares not for place or time and overtakes Zhousheng Chen in the bathtub. Zhousheng Chen wants a hug. Without a moment’s hesitation, Shi Yi steps in (with her clothes on) to give him the warmth he yearns.

Mei Xing and Shi Yi are outside Zhou Wen Xing’s room (Zhou Sheng Chen is visiting). Mei Xing assures Shi Yi that once Zhou Wen Xing wakes up, he’ll take her away from Shanghai, away from this bloody complicated family. But first he has to help Zhousheng Chen. Mei Xing emptily laughs that he doesn’t know what he could have owed Zhousheng Chen in their past life for him (Mei) to be this loyal without reservation. Well……..about that .

O&O: The Crown Prince (who Mei Xing reincarnated from), in my opinion, is bad but not that bad. Yes, he was also responsible for Zhousheng Chen’s death but he wasn’t the mastermind. He had regretted it. If he wasn’t the Crown Prince, I think he could have been a good guy and it’s that goodness within him that he’s reborn and is willing to repay everything in this lifetime. Very sad character. [ Ep24 ] Zhou Wen Xing has a recording for Shi Yi. In the message, Zhou Wen Xing first apologizes to Shi Yi that a recording will have to suffice because she knows that her last moments will be reserved for Mei Xing. She wants to remember his bones so that she can find him in her next life. Secondly, she apologizes over and over again for the unfortunate series of accidents that were in fact intentional. The culprit should be obvious (Zhou Wen Chuan). The water drowning was intentional as well but the intent was of a different nature. On her own accord, Zhou Wen Xing pushed Shi Yi into the lake. Saving Shi Yi was part of her plan too. She wanted Zhousheng Chen to fear losing the two people most important to him. Zhou Wen Xing wanted him to leave Zhou Family. Zhou Wen Xing apologizes for being selfish because this was her solution to protect both her brothers. She had sacrificed Shi Yi and herself and now she’s dying for it… . Shi Yi watches through the window separating her from Zhou Wen Xing as she hears the end of the recording. Shi Yi repeats, “I don’t blame you.” Zhou Wen Xing’s vital signs drop. She dies.

In the recording, Zhou Wen Xing also tells Shi Yi of a secret in Zhou Family but she won’t tell Shi Yi of the details because she believes it’s a curse just like it is for herself and Zhou Wen Chuan. I hate it when people do that. “I have a secret but I won’t tell you” .

Uncle Zhousheng is very sad over Zhou Wen Xing’s death.

Xiao Man miscarries.

Hong Xiao Yu finds out Du Feng is a police officer. And they were planning to marry? Does he not have police uniforms or academy pictures at home? Mei Xing is alone. He takes each step with a heavy heart. Oh poor you. My heart hurts for this guy the most. Two lifetimes of tragedy and the second one is worse . He had just realized the person he cherishes the most was the one next to him all along. Did they kiss? Did they??

Zhou Wen Chuan is grounded and kneels in their family’s temple to repent. Uncle Zhousheng is in tears as he lectures Zhou Wen Chuan who then calls him “Dad”. He’s like, Don’t you regret that you never heard this from Zhou Wen Xing?

Second life, he just started falling in love with her and she… T_T [ Ep25 ] Zhousheng Chen grieves. He’s crying with a fist to his mouth, trying to stifle the sound to not worry Shi Yi. But Shi Yi knows. Shi Yi gives him space to grieve and then when he wakes up in the evening, she aptly adjusts to his brighter mood.

Shi Yi buys a pet for Zhousheng Chen. Hong Xiao Yu is with her and this girl is actually touching a hairy spider almost the size of her hand!!!!!!! . The new additions to the crab family are called “To Hold Each Other’s Hands” – this is the reason she bought the pets.

Shi Yi and Zhousheng Chen visit Grandma. She still doesn’t remember Shi Yi and compliments her beauty, asking her to consider her oldest grandson. Zhousheng Chen entertains both ladies and asks Shi Yi for her number, reminiscent of their airport meeting. Touched, Shi Yi repeats his line that she doesn’t have a phone yet. Zhousheng Chen has a smart, romantic reply. Shock . He will give her his home number, his WeChat number, and every single number he has to wait for her to contact him. Grandma is merry.

Then at night Zhousheng Ren barges into Zhousheng Chen’s room. He says he’s afraid of the dark. Kind Shi Yi retires the room to the brothers. Grumpy Zhousheng Chen bans Ren from visiting his place (in Shanghai), limiting it to one per vacation. Ren admits he lied about being afraid. It’s his heart that’s heavy and suffocating. He wants to cry. Zhousheng Chen tells him to cry. Aiyah! I thought we were over the sadness. Ren baby, don’t cry!

Shi Yi sleeps in the living room. She sees Grandma opening her window. Worried, she checks on Grandma. Grandma is actually speaking to Zhou Wen Xing …. T_T . And then she learns the “secret” that Zhou Wen Xing and Zhou Wen Chuan are Uncle Zhousheng’s children. That’s not all she learns: Zhousheng Chen knew of this secret too. It seems to be an open secret that everyone knew but no one spoke of .

[ Ep26 ] Zhousheng Chen is with Shi Yi, visiting her parents. Zhousheng Chen and Dad take sides on who’s prettier. Zhousheng Chen is team Shi Yi and Dad is team Mom. Wait ’till the men are alone and then they’ll be truthful, ha, but then again I do believe Zhousheng Chen – this boring, truthful guy. And look at him carrying Shi Yi’s purse in that awkward way . Later in her room, Zhousheng Chen asks Shi Yi why her “Little name” is Eleven (shiyi). Because she’s your Shiyi! Because her grandmother found it simple.

The house and this guqin place are all under Shi Yi’s name. It’s part of Zhousheng Chen’s Dad’s will to leave something for his daughter-in-law, something he regretfully could not have done for his own wife (Zhousheng Chen’s birth mother).

Shi Yi is now at Grandma’s place. Surprise, surprise, Grandma remembers Shi Yi and is now inventing her own stuff now like Where is my grand-grand son! Zhousheng Chen awkwardly laughs that he’s doing homework. Grandma pities grand-grandson who is only three. Then she whispers to Zhousheng Chen if he wants one more. Ha. Well. That depends on Shi Yi. A little startled, but mostly touched, Shi Yi says Of course.

So many generations in this episode. Zhousheng Chen’s dad, Zhousheng Chen’s son.. .

[ Ep27 ] Zhou Wen Chuan is still grounded. When Xiao Man visits him, he proposes they flee in the middle of Grandma’s birthday celebration. That’s the perfect opportunity. However, Xiao Man refuses him. She can’t leave her family and friends. She can’t choose him when he’s committed so many sins.

Grandma forgets her grand-grandson’s name. Shi Yi doesn’t know either, but Zhousheng Chen has it all thought out. It’s Zhou Mu Shi. Zhou sheng Chen admires (mu) Shi Yi . Shi Yi wonders wouldn’t his mother blame him for changing his surname from Zhousheng to Zhou. Zhousheng Chen assures Shi Yi that this is well within his jurisdiction. Shi Yi ya, your mother doesn’t blame you either ~

Shi Yi and Zhousheng Chen have another talk about children. She wants twins and so does Zhousheng Chen. He thinks that tonight is rather suitable. Whaddya think Shi Yi? Her smile disappears as she lays flat on the bed.

Shi Yi : I’m ready. Zhousheng Chen rips off his sweater, lies down : Then I’ll start.

On the wall of Zhousheng Chen’s library, Shi Yi writes Shanglin Fu. She doesn’t finish. Zhousheng Chen thought she forgot the lines: 色授魂与 心愉于侧. She says she’s both tired and nervous because if she messes up, it’s sorta permanent on the wall. It wouldn’t be feasible to switch out a wall. What about a new wallpaper?

Zhousheng Chen informs Mom Zhou that Zhou Wen Chuan is under investigation and the police have summoned Mei Xing to testify. Daddy Mei (a lawyer) is willing to represent Zhou Wen Chuan but on one condition: Mom has to convince Zhou Wen Chuan to plead guilty. Mom Zhou asks for time to think. Mom Zhou is a pitiful character. She couldn’t marry the person she loves. Her children can’t call their father Dad. Her daughter died. Her son is going to be imprisoned. Even her grandson couldn’t survive (Xiao Man’s miscarriage) .

After a whole night of thinking, Mom summons Zhou Wen Chuan to her place. He admits to everything he’s accused of. He needed money to pay his debts for his failed business ventures. He thought that by marrying Tong Jia Ren, he’d earn the support of Mom Zhou, but Mom Zhou remained fair. In his words: She kept Zhou family and sacrificed him. Zhou Wen Chuan will surrender. Mom Zhou cries. I can’t quite tell if this guy is truly repenting or he thinks that life is just unfair to him .

Curiously, Shi Yi reads the invitation that Zhousheng Chen has been secretly writing:

浮生若夢 為歡幾何 獨有時宜 為我所求

This is the translation from hui3r’ novel translation : “This floating life is but a dream. How often can life’s pleasures be enjoyed? Shi Yi, alone, is all that I ask.”

Less poetic and more English: Life is uncertain, the amount of pleasures one can derive from are countless, but Shi Yi alone is more than I can ask for. One more thing: this poem incorporates both their names as well: 生 and 時宜

O&O: (Ep24) Cui Shiyi committed suicide, betraying her family and her mother of her filial duties. flash2351 (see comments below) made a nice connection that in this life she dropped her Cui surname perhaps because she failed as a daughter.² In this episode, when Shi Yi asks Zhousheng Chen whether his mother would mind the change in their son’s last name, it’s as if it’s a gentle reminder that Mom Cui wouldn’t blame her either.

(Ep3) In this life, can they finally complete the poem they left incomplete in their past life? Once the poem is complete, will their love finally be complete?

Shi Yi is so in love, she showers him with more love. He’s confused at her when she blissfully smiles as she moistens his hand with hand lotion.

[ Ep28 ] At Grandma’s birthday, Zhou Wen Chuan asks Mom Zhou if he can see Grandma one last time before he surrenders. It’s approved. And then this dude takes Shi Yi hostage. Wut . Then he beats up Zhousheng Chen who then faints. Then Shi Yi sprints forward to protect Zhousheng Chen. The result: Zhou Wen Chuan and Shi Yi fly off from the second floor. Encore! No. I don’t mean that. Why so dramatic, Show?

By the way, it’s very brave of Shi Yi to jump at Zhou Wen Chuan. This girl is also afraid of heights. She’s scared of heights because of Zhousheng Chen. She will conquer her fear because of Zhousheng Chen .

Zhou Wen Chuan died from the fall.

Zhousheng Chen wakes up, all bruised. Shi Yi is still unconscious. He can barely walk and he’s begging at the Zhou Temple for Shi Yi’s well-being. When Zhousheng Chen returns to the hospital, Shi Yi’s parents want her transferred to Shanghai. They can’t let Shi Yi be with Zhousheng Chen anymore. A simple birthday party turned deadly. How can they trust him?

O&O:

(Ep18) All of Mom Zhou’s sufferings seem to be from her days as Empress Dowager. For her selfish desires, the Empress Dowager sacrificed the monarch family, killed her son, and her unborn grandchild. In this life, she chose Zhou Family and lost all her children, every single one of them, even the unborn grandchild.

[ Ep29 ] Hong Xiao Yu adds a few nice words for Zhousheng Chen to Shi Yi’s parents who won’t let him visit Shi Yi. Simultaneously, Hong Xiao Yu also respects the parents’ decision in keeping their daughter safe from Zhou family.

Zhousheng Chen spends countless nights at the hospital, sleeping in the corridors on hard chairs. He’s recovering from grave injuries as well. Finally, the parents give in. He’s allowed to see Shi Yi (when he is her husband). His slow and careful steps towards Shi Yi is enough to show how much he yearned to see her and yet hurts to see her. Taking her hand, he tells her he never left her side. Oof. This is true . However, Mom Shi asks Zhousheng Chen to divorce Shi Yi. Zhousheng Chen is resolute: he won’t let go of her. She is his wife. Dad asks What if she’s always like this? Zhousheng Chen is prepared to wait for her his entire life even if she doesn’t wake up. He has already planned his life around Shi Yi down to every minute. He also asks Mom Shi if she will consider transferring Shi Yi to home care after her condition stabilizes. Shi Yi doesn’t like hospitals. Oh that’s why in Ep19 he didn’t take her to the hospital . Mom begrudgingly sends him home. Dad kindly translates: Go home and rest so that you can rotate with us in taking care of Shi Yi. T_T

The next night, Zhousheng Chen cares for Shi Yi with Mom’s permission. He dresses up in a suit just for Shi Yi, it’s her favourite look on him. He’s finally grooming himself D :. He also feeds their two crabs: “To Hold Each Other’s Hand”

Mei Xing represents Zhousheng Chen as he tells Zhou family his plans. Zhousheng Chen’s interest remains in his research. He’ll take over Zhou Corp for ten years for this project and once that is complete, he will hand over everything to Zhousheng Ren. Mom Zhou approves of that but she also relinquishes her role as the head of Zhou family. However, Mei Xing isn’t done speaking. If Mom Zhou wants to stay, no one can ever tell her to leave – these are Zhousheng Chen’s wishes. He recognizes that Mom Zhou truly cares for this family.

Zhousheng Chen finds Shi Yi’s journal. It was meant for him to read. In one entry, she even writes that if he doesn’t finish reading it, he can’t marry her. The journal is a mix of her thoughts and Cui Shiyi’s life.

O&O:

Last life, Cui Feng (currently Du Feng) was Cui Shiyi’s brother. This life, Hong Xiao Yu is practically like a sister to Shi Yi. They switched places to guard Shi Yi .

[ Ep30 ] Shi Yi is still unconscious. Zhousheng Chen has taken her to Xi’an, the place that rains nonstop. One day it stops raining. Shi Yi is awake! Xi’an, for our couple, is a place of miracles. The sky will clear up for these two . She cries. Her first words are “Zhousheng Chen”. She didn’t forget him like the doctor had warned. Shi Yi would never forget Zhousheng Chen . She had a long dream that she was his disciple. She sobs when she mentions that the Crown Prince wanted to abrade his beautiful bones. Zhousheng Chen assures her that he would never leave her. He is always here for her. He read her journal and believes her story that they could be reincarnated? Our geek believes her! . He even completed their poem on the library wall.

When Shi Yi can walk, Zhousheng Chen takes her to the Ancient City Walls of Xi’an – she wants to see the snow. Then Shi Yi learns that he was often misunderstood for being suicidal. Reassuringly, he tells her never thought of it. He believed she would wake up. More like he can’t not believe it. The hope of her waking up was his motivation to live . Teary, Shi Yi assures him that his wife is back. Zhousheng Chen whispers in her ear, “I will always love you.” Shi Yi reciprocates the confession.

O&O midway-insertion:

(Ep20) Cui Shiyi could never admire the snowfall in public because of her status as the future Crown Princess (therefore future Empress). She could have gone to the Crown Prince’s tower, but that was the last place she ever wanted to be and so she took to the roof where no one could see her. Zhousheng Chen would accompany her there.

In this present life to have Shi Yi and Zhousheng Chen watch the snow together on the city wall is a sign of them escaping their previous fate. (Cui) Shiyi and Zhousheng Chen are no longer bound by their status and responsibilities.

(Ep24) On this similar wall that Cui Shiyi asked Zhousheng Chen to marry her in their next life, I was expecting Zhousheng Chen to propose with “Marry me” but instead he said “I will always love you”. Thinking back to Ep22, I think Show may have been deliberate in this setup. When he’s supposed to say “Marry me” he said “I love you”. When he’s supposed to say “I love you” (Ep22), he talks about their wedding. Zhousheng Chen is always off beat but he’s never short of sincerity.

Their wedding is planned on May 11th. Before that, Shi Yi is wondering when they can have their Zhou Mu Shi. She wants to have a child but Zhousheng Chen is worried about her health. Any chance that can take her away from him, he doesn’t want it, including her going into labour. Shi Yi convinces him: it’s unlikely they’ll die together, one of them will have to leave first and having a child will keep the other one company. As a (forever) child, I am offended. Are children replacements? Well. Biologically, I guess so…. Zhousheng Chen can’t argue against her. Shi Yi knows she won and drags him into the room ’cause they’re ready!! (I know you guys love this line ;D)

Shi Yi sends out Zhousheng Chen’s handwritten wedding invitations. This is the second set he wrote. The first set was trashed because it’s inauspicious to be interrupted in the middle of writing them. It seems that for this couple, the second time is always the charm . It’s time for dress fitting. She gets to choose 10. Omg, lol . Isn’t that too many? Nope. She wears them once during the wedding and can keep them forever. A waste .

The night before the wedding, Shi Yi is sleeping with her bridesmaids (note how she opts to drink OJ instead of alcohol³) but she misses her husband and texts him. He’s dying to see her too. Just one night and these two miss each other dearly. Zhousheng Chen tippy-toes out of his room to not disturb the sleeping Mei Xing (who is still holding Zhou Wen Xing’s hangover cure T_T He’s never going to use it, eh ). Zhousheng Chen piggybacks Shi Yi to a secret place. On the way, there are red lanterns lighting their path. Each has verses written on them and all of the verses complete Shanglin Fu. Shi Yi blissfully complains that he never tells her what he did for her. Zhoucheng Chen is a guy who speaks with his actions (e.g. pomegranate, meteorite watch) but at the very least he tells (and shows) her the completed poem on the library wall.

They fall asleep in the library. Shi Yi wakes up at 5:30am naturally. Her biological clock is adjusting to his. He already has breakfast prepared for her. Shi Yi has a pickup line ready for him: “Waking up to the sight of a beauty, it’s a foretelling sign of auspiciousness. A suitable marriage (it is).” She uses her name 宜 (Yi) to say “suitable” giving this line a dual meaning: it is a marriage that is suitable and a marriage with Shi Yi.

On the day of the wedding, Driver Lin is teary to witness Zhousheng Chen (finally) finding his happiness.

Zhousheng Ren is seated next to the guy who flirted with Shi Yi all the way back in Ep9. Ren gets a bit of sweet revenge and reminds the guy that he’s Zhousheng Chen’s little brother so what should he be calling him then? Lol .

The maid who loves to interrupt (Lian Sui) is finally on the other end. She and Lin Fei are guarding the doors to prevent anyone from playing any tricks on the ‘newlyweds’ on their special night.

And then there is Mei Xing. Oof . He’s as happy as he can be for his buddy. I think he’s also trying to stay sober. Remember how drunk he was the last time for Zhousheng Chen’s marriage? He doesn’t want to use Zhou Wen Xing’s hangover medication T_T .

Shi Yi wants all the wedding rites done properly, for example, using xicheng to unveil her, and stroking her hair. These two actions mean “gratifying everything one could wish” and “to live together until the white hairs of old age.” Lastly, they need to exchange wine.

Shi Yi : Zhousheng Chen, I love you Zhousheng Chen : I love you, Shi Yi.

Shi Yi says it first like usual; Zhousheng Chen handles the rest from there like always .

They kiss. No they don’t. She stops him. She has something to tell him: she’s pregnant (3 months).

O&O:

Shi Yi and Cui Shiyi’s first spoken words are the same: “Zhousheng Chen.”

This dream is aptly inserted. It’s almost as if Cui Shiyi jumped from the tower back into Shi Yi’s life, returning to Zhousheng Chen

Although Cui Shiyi committed suicide, Zhousheng Chen will not. Shi Yi is still here in this life. He wouldn’t ditch her first like he did in the past.

(Ep3) Poem is completed! Finally! It was set up all the way from Ep3 of O&O and completed in Ep30 of F&E.

(Ep3) Cui Shiyi also fell asleep in his library and Zhousheng Chen had to carry her back to her room with a fur blanket because a man cannot touch a woman without ruining her chastity. In this episode, he’s piggybacking her to the library when she’s his wife and pregnant with his child.

Episode 1

Based on this first episode, Chang’an Memories did not have a happy ending.

Anyway, at present time Shiyi is a very popular voice actress. She is very low-key and really choosey of projects she does.

The latest drama she was doing was narrating the story about Junior Prince Nan, who gave so much for his country but he was framed and ended up being executed by dismemberment. Chopping him to pieces took 6 hours. Whoa, that hurts.

While narrating this Shiyi could not help but tear up. The producers and sound engineers were all praising her emotional monologue.

After her voice session, she hurried to the airport to catch her flight back home.

It took a bit of time going through the metal detector because she was wearing bejeweled high heels.

It so happened that a man was going through the same thing at the adjacent metal detector doorway (without the high heels. of course). He looks like he was in a hurry so he just grabbed his bag and proceeded to leave.

The metal detector assistant found the man’s ID on the tray and called ‘Zhou Shengchen’

Zhou Shengchen stopped and saw the ID being waved at him. He did not notice Shiyi falling in love at first sight with him.

He took his ID and thanked the assistant.

Shiyi, who was normally on the shy side, went after Shengchen and introduced herself. She told him that she was just working on a drama…

Instinctively, Shengchen knew that it was a drama about Junior Prince Nan.

Shiyi then said that she wanted to be friends with him and wanted his Wechat.

Shiyi was so shyly excited but not for long because Shengchen’s colleague came to collect him for the afternoon seminar.

Before he went Hong Xiao Yu told him that they will be going to the Dragon Azure Temple to see the peach blossoms.

He said that if it does not rain, he will be there.

It did not rain so they all met up and had tea afterwards.

Shiyi was falling in love quietly with him which was noticed by his assistant professor who was all worried when a girl came to see Shengchen.

The girl came to deliver a wedding invitation to Shengchen. It was her wedding to Shengchen’s brother. The girl said that she had only ever wanted to marry one man and that man was Shengchen.

Shengchen told her that if she was having doubts about her forthcoming wedding then she should be talking it through her fiance rather than with him.

The girl left in a hurry.

Episode 2

Shengchen and Shiyi’s relationship was almost over before it even started.

Shiyi was invited to have dinner with Shengchen’s work colleague and while Shengchen was settling the bill, someone asked Shiyi if she was Shengchen’s girlfriend.

Shiyi said she wasn’t, then someone else said that Shengchen has already got a fiancee.

This really shocked Shiyi as history seemed to be repeating itself. Can’t they really not be together?

Anyway, Shiyi immediately said that she’s got to go.

Shengchen insisted to take her back to the hotel.

They were so awkward in the car and when they reached the hotel, Shiyi could not wait to get away but Shengchen said that he overheard the group conversation and he added that his situation was misunderstood. He doesn’t have a fiancee and he will not marry until he found ‘the one’.

This was a carte blanche for Shiyi to flirt with Shengchen.

By the way, it looks like Shiyi actually remembers their past together.

She told Shengchen that she could read his palm but she could only tell the part about his past.

She told him while holding his hand that they met each other in their previous life.

He was happy about it and gave him the confidence to finally asked for her number.

Anyway, Shiyi is later teased by her colleagues that she was having LDR with a guy.

Shiyi tried to call Shengchen’s office but she was told that Shengchen had left.

Shengchen went home to his family.

Miss Tong who was engaged to his brother was sulking all the way through.

Shengchen got dressed and he looked very prosperous and ready to meet the elders of the family who are all shareholders of their conglomerate.

When Shengchen broached the subject of their investments everyone was lukewarm of his new ideas. Instead, they told him to rest for now which made Shengchen downhearted.

He needed cheering up so he called Shiyi to go out with him for dinner.

Shiyi was only too excited to go. She immediately noticed how different Shengchen looked and also his chauffer-driven plush car.

Loving Bailu, she is so cute and confident.

Episode 3 – 4

Shengchen asked Shiyi to get engaged because his mother wanted him to marry some random girl.

Shengchen told Shiyi that he knew she likes him and he likes her. Well she did like him a whole lifetime ago.

She could not marry him then so she jumped to her death.

She agreed to get engaged. Her parents like him because Shiyi likes him but it was another thing about his family or at least his mother who when Shengchen brought Shiyi who looked beautiful in a qipao, the mother told her to go away in not so many words.

Shiyi was worried about it but Shengchen said that for him now that they are engaged, there is only one opinion that matters and that’s her.

Episode 3 is particularly sweet with the two flirting up a storm.

Mei Xing, Shengchen’s best friend told him that he saw a girl visiting the old city wall. He said that he understands how Shengchen proposed to Shiyi immediately because if he sees the girl again he would propose to her as well.

What they had not realised yet was that the girl Mei Xing fell in love at first sight with as Shiyi.

Episode 5

Shiyi and Shengchen is very sedate but they are so in love in a very awkward way. They have not even hug yet nor kiss.

His family was asking if they were sleeping in the same bed but Shengchen was almost scandalised.

His family wanted Shiyi to go stay with them so she could learn the family ways but Shengchen would not have it. He said that Shiyi is just perfect the way she was.

Meanwhile, the Zhou family has a very complicated relationship.

His mother was actually his stepmother.

His brother who was marrying Miss Tong, who is in love with Shengchen, is in love with another girl.

His grandma is so lovely but she is forgetful.

Shengchen’s driver, Mr. Lin is actually a member of his family. BTW, Mr Lin is always shown eating something which looks so delicious.

Episode 6

Shengchen and Shiyi are getting to know one another very slowly but cutely.

Shengchen is rather OCD while Shiyi was not really housewifely as she just gave him cereal in a bowl when he came to have breakfast with her.

Zhou Wenchuan is marrying Tong Jia Ren but he is really in love with Wang Man.

Wenchuan and Wang Man had been dating on and off for years but after another break-up, Wang Man was shocked to find out that Wenchuan was marrying Tong Jia Ren.

The Zhou investment came to a rather nasty surprise when something went wrong with the factory.

Episode 7

It looks like Wenchuan was so jealous of Shengchen that despite being told that Shengchen was locked in the factory, he purposely waited hours to turn up.

Mei Xing, who was with Shengchen said that Wenchuan was a better businessman than Shengchen but he has an evil mind.

Wenchuan married Tong Jia Ren for business reasons.

It is now a hectic preparation for Shengchen and Shiyi’s wedding.

Uncle Lin was very happy to see Shengchen behaving uncharacteristically.

Shengchen kept zoning out about Shiyi.

Episode 8

The first day at the Zhou Mansion was not particularly happy for Shiyi.

For one thing, Mother Zhou banned her from coming to see her saying that she must rest.

Thinking that at least she had Shengchen with her, she was disappointed to find out that he was not sharing the same bed with her, and then he got called away while they were mildly flirting.

Apparently, the pregnant cousin ended up in the pond because Jia Ren pushed for continuously talking about her comparing her to Shiyi.

Shengchen was asked to speak to Tong Jia Ren which he did not particularly fancy.

Poor Shiyi, she wanted to go for a walk before turning in but she was told to stay inside as Mother Zhou would go mental.

Shiyi went to bed and stayed there until late morning.

Mother Zhou was not very pleased as Shiyi should be behaving like an accommodating bride-to-be.

Shengchen said that it was his fault for not telling Shiyi what time breakfast was.

Episode 9

Shiyi met Grandma who told her the complication family history.

Shengchen’s mother was her adopted daughter and Mother Zhou is her own daughter. Shengchen’s father left the family to marry his mother and when Shengchen’s biological mother died, he had to marry Mother Zhou so he could bring Shengchen into the family fold.

But after that Grandma and Mother Zhou never saw eye to eye.

Episode 10

The engagement party was cancelled and not one is more upset than Shengchen himself.

Shiyi told him that she understood given that his pregnant cousin was on a life support machine.

Anyway, they went to break the news to Shiyi’s family. They were not too happy and assumed quite rightly that Madame Zhou was not enamoured of Shiyi and that she was looking down on Shiyi’s family.

Shengchen told his mother that he was going to be holding an engagement party in Shanghai. He would like her to come but she just looked at him with her cold indifferent face.

Episode 11

Shengchen put Shiyi in a rather complicated position of asking her to register their marriage, which is actually the legal marriage, in front of his grandma.

Shiyi said that she will think about it and left to go in the toilet to mull over what to do.

So after a few minutes, she came out and agreed to go to the city hall to get married.

To make their transition into being a united married couple, Grandma decided to enter the Zhou mansion.

Though already legally married Shengchen decided to not be so frisky and let Shiyi sleep in her bedroom alone. This actually rather surprised Shiyi who was left eating the traditional nuts spread over the marital bed.

The next morning, Grandma announced to the family that they should make a pilgrimage to the mountain temple to ask for blessings to Shiyi and Shengchen’s union.

Mother Zhou asked Shiyi to sit with her in the car. Shengchen was not very happy about it and he was right.

Mother Zhou told Shiyi point blank that though they had registered the marriage, she will never accept Shiyi into the family.

Episode 12

Grandma and Mother Zhou had a heart to heart talk about the Shengchen and why Mother Zhou was not in favour of Shiyi.

Mother Zhou said that Zhou Shengxin had been running the family business for more than 20 years and she reckons that he would not willingly give up the rein to Shengchen.

Without her, she was worried that Shengchen would be pushed out of the family and the business as he had no really blood family. So she was trying to marry him off to an influential family that could back him up to retain his family and the business.

Aww, she is not completely awful. We can understand her.

Anyway, Shiyi asked Shengchen how long he was going to be away.

He said two months.

Shiyi asked what was he going to be researching in the German laboratory.

Shengchen said that they will research the possibility of human habitation in Venus.

I must say two months is not enough and even years to research habitation to Venus. Mars is a better value.

Venus has a greenhouse effect on steroids.

It has a surface temperature of about 900 degrees celsius which would melt lead and atmospheric pressure that would flatten a car. It has active volcanoes, sulphuric acid in its clouds and that is just for starters.

The Russian’Venera probe which is TOUGHENED AND ARMOURED landed in Venus but lasted an hour before being crushed and boiled.

Episode 13

The newly married Tong Jia Ren and Zhou Wenchuan were already heading for divorce. It was always a business thing. Both in love with different people.

Wenchuan had always been in love with the tailor, Wang Man while Tong Jia Ren has been carrying a one sided love for Shengchen since she can remember.

She was back in Germany as her laboratory was also in Germany like Shengchen.

One night, she turned up drunk at Shengchen’s apartment.

Shengchen was not very happy as the only option was to let her sleep on the street.

At the middle of the night, Tong Jiaren woke up and wandered down to where Shengchen was working.

She commented that she was very surprised that he married so quickly and implied that he only married Shiyi so he could get his hands to his inheritance.

Shengchen told her that he does not wish to discuss personal matters with her and that was the end of it.

The next morning, Tong Jia Ren found Shengchen having breakfast with Frank. They invited her to have brekkie with them which she turned down but Wenchuan turned up and had breakfast with his brother instead.

Anyway, Shiyi went to Germany to be with Shengchen.

She finally met, Mei Xing, Shengchen’s best friend and business manager/lawyer. Shengchen had given him power of attorney to conduct his newly inherited Zhou Family business to Mei Xing.

Sad for Mei Xing because he realised that the missus of his friend was the woman he saw at the ancient wall which he fell in love at first sight with.

Aww Mei Xing was really in love with Shi Yi.

Episode 14

Shiyi’s visit to Germany was not what she expected. One thing Shengchen was much too busy for her but he did try his best to accommodate her and was actually quite loving to her in his usual awkward nerdy way.

Tong Jia Ren and Wenchuan tried to create a rift between Shiyi and Shengchen by pretending that there is more to the relationship between Shengchen and Tong Jia Ren.

Even Shengchen was scared that Shiyi would be angry and misunderstand what his previous relationship with Tong Jia Ren but Shiyi trusted him and his nerdy way implicitly. He would not know what to do with girls, much less an affair. Lol

Shengchen took Shiyi to the city but it went wrong when a throng of people with bats started attacking one another and broke the car window opposite where Shiyi was sitting while Shengchen was buying something. This incident rather traumatised her.

Mei Xing said that he had contacted the police about this and noted that there had been some small little things that had been going wrong since Shiyi arrived. They wanted to know who was behind it.

Mei Xing arranged for someone to look after Shiyi when she went back home to China.

Episode 15

Mei Xing confronted Wenchuan about his shenanigans concerning Shengchen. Mei Xing warned Wenchuan not to push it. In fact stop what he was doing to harm Shengchen. He said that Shengchen is his best friend and he would protect him to the limit. He is the opposite of Shengchen, he would not let anything pass, he will make whoever harms his best friend answerable for it.

Young Shengren had become protective of his cousin-in-law, Shiyi. He started hanging around with her and she thought she has a son and quite like him because she sees him as a young version of Shengchen.

Shiyi told her husband that she has an admirer.

Shengcheng immediately knew who she meant and told her so. He said he had always known.

She was with her team when she noticed someone familiar by the bridge.

It was Shengchen who had come home to see her.

When they got home, Shengren had gone so alone, Shiyi turned on the heater as it was a cold rainy day.

But after staring at each other for the longest time, Shengchen told her not to bother with the heater because he was going to make her hot.

Promises! promises! Whoa, what got into you Shengchen? I thought we had to wait for the last episode before you make a move! Yehey!

Episode 16

The married couple were deciding on the type of house they would like to buy.

Episode 17

Mei Xing was very popular with the girls, including Wenxing. He told them that he has a poem that is a sort of a riddle and the one who can answer it is his ideal girl.

The three girls said that it was too hard and even the genius Shengchen would not be able to answer. They forwarded the poem to Shengchen who asked Shiyi to answer it. She answered it within minutes. So she is Mei Xing’s ideal girl.

Awww

Shengchen moved to Shiyi’s apartment.

They were slowly, and sometimes awkwardly, getting to know each other.

Shengchen wanted to know if Shiyi wanted children. She said she did.

But she can’t really do it all by herself so she got ready for bed and then threw seductive looks at Shengchen who was still working on his research.

She looked cute so Shengchen took the hint and followed her to the bedroom.

He then got to the bed beside her and his foreplay was. “I’m ready.” which seemed enough for Shiyi.

They had a good long passionate night and woken up around mid-morning by Shiya grandparents and Yuan Yuan who had come to visit.

They were shocked that Shengchen was already living with Shiyi not knowing that the two are already legally married.

Episode18

Shiyi and Shengchen were invited to her parents’ house. They noticed how Shiyi was really into the shy Shengchen who looks adoringly at Shiyi most of the time. The parents knew that it was a love match especially when Shiyi confided to her mother that she was Shengchen’s first girlfriend. So she had to lead most of the time as he is really unfamiliar with girls. 🤗

Her mother saw Shiyi stealing a kiss from Shengchen and she was reassured that the two will be alright despite problems with Shengchen’s mother.

Wenchuan divorced Tong Jia Ren and promptly asked Wang Man to marry him.

He then asked Wang Man’s family permission to marry Wang Man. He told them that he was basically nothing because he was only the second son and does not get to inherit and then he was also a divorced man.

But what Wang Man’s family did not like was that Wenchuan and Tong Jia Ren are not going to reveal for at least a year that they divorced for the sake of family.

So Wang Man and Wenchuan had to be in a hush-hush relationship for now. Wang Man’s family was not happy.

Episode 19

Shiyi ended up in the hospital because of flu. Many men were worried about her including Mei Ming.

Grandma begged Mother Zhou to not repeat history by treating Shiyi so appallingly.

It was getting scarier at Xian.

Mei Xing was beaten up by hoods.

When Wei Xing found out about it she went to confront her twin brother to ask him if it was his doing.

He denied it of course.

Episode 20

Shengxing agreed to leave Xi’an to facilitate Shengchen taking over the company.

It was the Ghost Festival so Shengchen and Shiyi returned to Xi’an for the celebration.

Though Mother Zhou was not as fierce as before, it was still pretty awkward for Shiyi and rather lonely.

Wenxing’s heart condition is getting worse, they advised for a heart transplant.

As it was the ghost festival, Shiyi and Wenxing were on a boat; they were releasing flower candles with their wishes.

They were about to go back when Shiyi fell from the boat. The last thing she needed was a soaking in the cold pond but Wenxing had no choice but to dive in to rescue Shiyi.

Shiyi was in a coma and having a dream of being the Shiyi who was engaged to the crown prince but in love with zhou Shengchen.

Meanwhile, Wenxing was running a fever.

Episode 21

Shiyi woke up from her coma to the relief of Shengchen who stayed with her all the time, never eating or sleeping.

Shengchen went to see Wenchuan and asked him if he had anything to do with Shiyi’s accident. Wenchuan was actually shocked that Shengchen would think so.

Wen Xing went to see Shiyi and apologised for making Shiyi go on realising the flower candles by boat when she can’t swim. She said if something had really happened to her Shengchen would not ever forgive her.

Shiyi comforted the distraught Wenxing and told her that Shengchen loves her dearly.

Poor Grandma had gone doolally.

Mother Zhou saw how much Shengchen cared for her mother so she tried to do as her mother requested: Be kinder to Shiyi.

She invited Shiyi and Shengchen to tea in a scenic location. She quizzed Shiyi why she likes Shengchen.

Shiyi more or less admitted that she was attracted at how boring 😜🤗 Shengchen is.

Mother Zhou said that it looks like that she is the perfect girl for her son, nevertheless she is still not suitable to join the backstabbing Zhou Family. She said that despite having married to the Zhou for so many years, she was still treated as an interloper.

Shiyi and Shengchen are tightly knit though, no one can tear them apart.

Episode 30

I can’t take it anymore so I jumped right to the ending to see if these two good leads will have HE, Happy Ending.

Well it looks like they would because Shiyi woke up from her coma.

Shengchen told her that they were in Xi’an where they are going to live from then on.

Shiyi wanted to have a baby but Shengchen was not too keen. He said that he was afraid that she might end up in hospital again especially with childbirth.

But Shiyi said that she wanted a mini-them in case she or Shengchen passed on. It would be so lonely to be all alone.

Shengchen saw the logic and sentiment of it so he agreed.

They are preparing for their wedding at Xi’an.

Their wedding invitation was handwritten by Shengchen.

Xiao Xu teased Shiyi about it that Shengchen was …

Before she could say that Shengchen is OCD, Shiyi said that Shengchen was just serious of the wedding.

On the eve of the wedding, the lovers were not supposed to meet but they just had to. They sneaked into the library and stayed together till the morning.

The wedding was a happy one without most of the Zhou clan.

Shiyi was so beautiful in her sequined red qipao wedding dress.

Shengchen tend to do a shortcut to the wedding tradition but Shiyi insisted that they follow through.

After they had the traditional drink with arms entwined, Shiyi told him that she is three months pregnant.

Shengchenwas so happy.

They were both happy.

Forever And Ever C Drama Review

Forever And Ever (一生一世) is the sequel to One And Only. It is indeed a great feeling to watch something sweet after the sadness of the prequel. There is the anticipation for a happily ever after closure for the couple after so much of suffering previously. So, I guess most viewers who enjoyed One And Only will go on to this drama because their story would seem incomplete without the sequel. But is the modern version of the couple’s love story as good as the historical one? Find out in my Forever And Ever review below.

Main Characters

Zhou Sheng Chen

Zhou Sheng Chen is a chemistry professor and researcher. He is a very intelligent guy with a high IQ but clueless when it comes to romance. He is reserved and shy. Zhou Sheng Chen is the type who prefers to listen than talk and hence, is not an expressive person. He is also calm and methodical. He is the eldest son and recognized heir of the Zhou family.

Shi Yi

Shi Yi is a talented voice actress and dubber. She is a pretty and cheerful woman. Shi Yi also tends to have dreams and flashes of ancient historical events revolving around a general and crown princess. Mei Lin is her agent and good friend while Yuan Yuan is her teenage cousin sister.

Supporting Characters

Mei Xing

Mei Xing is Zhou Sheng Chen’s lawyer and loyal friend. Zhou Sheng Cheng trusts him completely and appoints him to handle all his business affairs related to his family assets. The Mei and Zhou families are old friends.

Hong Xiao Yu

Xiao Yu is Shi Yi’s flat mate and best friend. She is a reporter and Shi Yi’s relationship advisor.

Zhou Wen Chuan

Wen Chuan is Zhou Sheng Chen’s younger half-brother. He is a jealous man who despises Zhou Sheng Chen for having all the privileges by virtue of his position as the eldest son of the family.

Zhou Wen Xing

Wen Xing is Zhou Sheng Chen’s younger half-sister. She is a sickly young lady with a heart ailment. But she is cheerful and kind. She cares a lot for her eldest brother and also has deep romantic feelings for Mei Xing who only regards her as a sister.

Qin Wan

Qin Wan is the matriarch of the Zhou family. Her husband was the heir but has since passed away. She is an influential and stern woman who wants to have a say in her sons’ marriage partners. She has a cold relationship with Zhou Sheng Chen.

Zhou Sheng Xing

Zhou Sheng Xing is Zhou Sheng Chen’s second uncle. He has been handling the family’s investment funds while Zhou Sheng Chen was working abroad.

Zhou Sheng Ren / Xiao Ren

Xiao Ren is Zhou Sheng Xing’s teenage son. He is a student and dislikes the stifling home environment of the Zhou family. Xiao Ren likes to hang around Zhou Sheng Chen and Shi Yi.

Tong Jia Ren

Jia Ren is Wen Chuan’s wife but has feelings for Zhou Sheng Chen. She also has a friendly relationship with her mother-in-law, Qin Wan.

Du Feng

Du Feng is Shi Yi and Xiao Yu’s new neighbor. He is a civil servant.

Uncle Lin

Uncle Lin is Zhou Sheng Chen’s driver and a distant relative of the Zhou family. He watched Zhou Sheng Chen grow up and sees him like a son.

Old Madam Qin

Old Madam Qin is Qin Wan’s mother. This means she is also Zhou Sheng Chen, Wen Chuan, and Wen Xing’s maternal grandmother. She is old and suffers from memory lapses.

Mr. And Mrs. Shi

They are Shi Yi’s parents. Shi Yi is their only child and they dote on her. Mr. Shi is an economics professor.

Wang Man / Xiao Man

Xiao Man is a tailor and comes from a family who has been doing tailoring for generations. The Zhou family is their old client. Hence, Xiao Man and Wen Chuan know each other since they were young. They are also ex-lovers.

Lin Fei And Lian Sui

Both of them are workers in the Zhou family residence. They are also distant relatives of the Zhou family. Lin Fei is also Uncle Lin’s nephew.

Synopsis

Shi Yi is a voice actress and she is doing voice over for a drama that features that Junior Prince of Nan Chen and designated Crown Princess Cui Shi Yi. She is naturally drawn to the story as she has always had dreams about historical events that feature these 2 people who seem connected to her past life. Her name also bears resemblance to the Crown Princess’ name.

While at the airport, Shi Yi hears the name Zhou Sheng Chen being called. This is the name of the Junior Prince of Nan Chen. She is attracted to him at first sight and asks him for his contact. He gives her his email address and they end up communicating via email for 6 months.

Zhou Sheng Chen is a chemistry professor and researcher. He is also the eldest son and heir of the Zhou family which is a very wealthy and traditional family with a large clan of relatives. The rule of the clan is that the eldest son will control the majority of the family assets once he is married. Zhou Sheng Chen is not interested in running the family business but needs to control the direction of the family investment funds and weed out the irregularities. Hence, he needs to get married and sees Shi Yi as an ideal candidate.

When Zhou Sheng Chen proposes to Shi Yi that they get engaged, she surprisingly agrees although they have not dated. Gradually, he falls in love with her but his complicated family relationships start to give them trouble including his disapproving mother.

Forever And Ever Ending (Spoilers Alert!)

Forever And Ever has a happy ending. Shi Yi and Zhou Sheng Chen get married with a wedding in the last episode. The very last scene is of the couple in their wedding attire in their bedroom. As they are about to kiss, Shi Yi stops Zhou Sheng Chen and tells him the happy news that she is already 3 months pregnant before the camera pans away for the drama to end.

Before that, Zhou Sheng Chen has also drawn up an agreement to relinquish control of the family assets to Xiao Ren in 10 years’ time on the condition that their funds are invested in the local industries rather than abroad. Qin Wan is also welcomed to remain in charge of the household as she has put in a lot of effort to protect the family’s interests over the years.

Zhou Sheng Chen’s Parents

The actual relationships among the different people in the Zhou family are only revealed gradually as the drama progresses. It is a complicated family with secrets carried over from the previous generation.

Qin Wan is Zhou Sheng Chen’s stepmother. His biological mother was raised by Old Madam Qin who treated her like a daughter. Their families were distant relatives. However, his parents relationship did not get the approval from the Zhou family elders. So, his father left his family but after his wife died a few years later, he agreed to the elders’ wishes to marry Qin Wan. He returned to the Zhou family and his son became the designated heir.

Back then, Qin Wan and Zhou Sheng Xing were lovers. But her mother forced her to break it up and marry Zhou Sheng Chen’s father instead. It is not clearly explained why Old Madam Qin did so but I presume she wanted Zhou Sheng Chen to get his rightful place in the Zhou family. After all, she regards Zhou Sheng Chen as her own grandson since his biological mother was like a daughter to her.

Wen Chuan And Wen Xing

Wen Chuan and Wen Xing are twins. They are also Zhou Sheng Xing’s children and this is the secret Wen Xing is alluding to in Episode 24. Shi Yi finds out about it in Episode 25 while chatting with Old Madam Qin. Zhou Sheng Chen already knew about it before his father died but has never mentioned it to anyone until Shi Yi brings it up with him. He knew that his father and Qin Wan were never close.

The past history also explains why Qin Wan doesn’t really like Zhou Sheng Chen. However, she knows she had been unfaithful towards the man she married who had also kept quiet about the twins’ paternity. Thus, she does want Zhou Sheng Chen to inherit the family’s wealth rather than supporting Wen Chuan who is her own son. It is her way of repaying what she owed Zhou Sheng Chen’s father.

It is also part of the reason why Qin Wan doesn’t want Sy Yi as a daughter-in-law. Instead, she wants Zhou Sheng Chen to marry someone from a powerful family who can back him up against internal enemies within the large Zhou clan.

Why Wen Chuan Hates Zhou Sheng Chen

Wen Chuan is not only jealous of Zhou Sheng Chen’s position as the eldest son of the family, he also needs to cover up his crimes from being exposed when Zhou Sheng Chen takes over the family business. Thus, he uses underhanded tactics to scare Zhou Sheng Chen including threats to Shi Yi’s life and beating up Mei Xing. Wen Chuan even falsifies Wen Xing’s health report that prevents her from having surgery and quarrels with her when she was sickly.

In the end, Wen Xing dies of heart ailment in Episode 24. Before she dies, she gives Shi Yi a recording of what she has done. Wen Xing apologizes for pushing Shi Yi into the water during a boat ride. She planned it to scare Zhou Sheng Chen as she hoped the latter would then take Shi Yi away and leave the family. Wen Xing did so because she doesn’t want her 2 brothers to fight and hurt themselves.

Wen Chuan is unrepentant despite being grounded at the ancestral temple. When his mother advised him to surrender to the police for his crimes, he takes Shi Yi hostage in Episode 28. During a struggle, both of them fall one story down. Wen Chuan dies while Shi Yi falls into a coma for a period of time before reawakening in Episode 30 for a happy ending.

Is Jia Ren Zhou Sheng Chen’s Ex-Fiancee?

Yes, the betrothal was arranged by their families when they were young. Jia Ren loves Zhou Sheng Chen but he was never interested in her. The betrothal was cancelled when Jia Ren’s elder sister married Zhou Sheng Chen’s uncle.

She then ends up marrying Wen Chuan hoping that it would instigate Zhou Sheng Chen to react. Wen Chuan also left Xiao Man to marry Jia Ren because he thought doing so would enable him to curry favor with his mother. As they are just using each other, they finalize their divorce in Episode 18. Jia Ren then plans to move to Beijing to work.

Did Xiao Man And Wen Chuan Get Back Together?

Wen Chuan returns to Xiao Man after his divorce and she is revealed to be pregnant in Episode 23. However, she suffers a miscarriage in Episode 24 after Wen Xuan causes Wen Xing’s death. She also doesn’t agree with Wen Chuan’s plan to escape and run away from his crimes. Hence, Xiao Man leaves Wen Chuan despite his cajoling to run away with him.

The Other Side Couples

Xiao Yu and Du Feng end up as a couple. She tells Shi Yi that they are dating in Episode 22.

Although Mei Xing is smitten by Shi Yi, he didn’t express her feelings for her as she is Zhou Sheng Chen’s fiancee. Shi Yi brought up the subject very briefly with him in Episode 23 but he has already let go of his feelings for her by then. Mei Xing has realized that it is Wen Xing that he should cherish instead. He was heartbroken when Wen Xing died.

When Did Zhou Sheng Chen And Shi Yi Get Together?

Zhou Sheng Chen proposes to Shi Yi that they get engaged in Episode 3. Their first kiss is in Episode 9 while in the car. Zhou Sheng Chen asks Shi Yi to register their marriage in Episode 11 to which she agrees. They consummated their relationship at the end of Episode 15 and move in together in Episode 16. Their wedding is in Episode 30.

Forever And Ever Review – Could Be Better

After what some would describe as a masterpiece for One And Only, Forever And Ever feels a little lacking in comparison. Personally, I prefer the prequel as the story is better executed and directed in a way that really draws you in to experience the protagonists’ emotions. There is a good plot and cohesion to the overall story. On the other hand, the modern version in Forever And Ever has a slice-of-life feel to the drama. The villain is a 2-dimensional character with little depth to his story. The main couple dominates the screen time with little relationship development for the side couples.

I’m not so sure if viewers would really enjoy Forever And Ever if they have no idea of the prequel. As it is, I think the satisfaction of the drama mainly comes from the healing aspect of seeing the couple being together at last after being forced apart in their past lives. If I were to consider Forever And Ever as a standalone drama, I think it could be boring for some. But it does provide insights into a traditional Chinese family that comes from old money. It is also different from the usual as the romance starts after their engagement.

Not Much To The Plot

The drama thrives on being shy, courteous, and sweet for the main couple. The majority of the screen time is about their relationship development whereby they get to know each other better with the female lead taking the initiative to make the male lead learn the art of romance. There is also Zhou Sheng Chen’s very traditional and complicated family which Shi Yi has to handle and in the process learns more about her man. So, there is not much to the plot unlike romance dramas such as Love Under The Full Moon or The Day Of Becoming You. Instead, Forever And Ever is a collection of events that happen to bring the couple closer together.

The other thing that the plot fails to do is to create an effective and emotional link between the main couple’s present and past life. Maybe it is intentional to get past China’s strict censorship board. I don’t know. Only Shi Yi is shown to have some dreams and flashbacks of the past and these are also not clearly explained. For those who have watched One And Only, we will be able to make the connection. But for viewers who have no idea at all, I think the lack of a clear explanation would take away an important emotional aspect for the drama.

Can You Watch Forever And Ever Without Watching One And Only?

My answer would be yes and no. Yes, because the plot is simple to understand. Even without watching One And Only, you wouldn’t feel lost as the sequel is mainly about the couple’s romance and the male lead’s family relationships. It is not like The Eternal Love Season 3 whereby you would be confused if you don’t watch the first season of the series.

Having said that, it is also a no if you want a better appreciation of the couple’s love for each other. Otherwise, it would seem unrealistic that a talented lady like Shi Yi would agree to get engaged to Zhou Sheng Chen when they have hardly dated. There are also references to the prequel in Forever And Ever in terms of a few verses and scenes. So, it is cute and satisfying to see some of their likes and habits in their past lives replicated such as Shi Yi’s love for pomegranates. Most of the characters in the modern drama also seem like reincarnations of the characters in One And Only. But these are not mandatory for you to understand the story in the sequel.

In short, it really depends on individual preference if you should watch one without the other. I know some viewers skip One And Only as it is too sad and would rather just savor the sweetness of Forever And Ever. So, you can certainly do that too. My own take is that One And Only is to prime you up for the sweetness in Forever And Ever after all that bitterness. This way, all the fluff and sugar would be magnified in the sequel as you would have a deeper attachment to the couple and a heavier desire to witness their happiness.

Acting Is Great But…

I think there is really no doubt that Allen Ren and Bai Lu have great chemistry as an on-screen couple. Their acting is also very natural and easy on the eyes as they feed off each other’s vibes in their interactions. That is already very obvious in the prequel and we get to see a continuation of that in this drama. Or perhaps it is the other way round since they shot Forever And Ever before One And Only. Whatever it is, these 2 leads are capable of making viewers swoon with their natural affinity for each other.

While the acting and chemistry are great, I’m just not so sure why Zhou Sheng Chen has been written to be such different characters in the 2 dramas. Prince of Nan Chen is a man of few words but full of charisma. He is certainly not shy or clueless when it comes to romance but only holds back because of duty to king and country. But Zhou Sheng Chen has been transformed into an awkward, shy, and totally blur man in Forever And Ever when it comes to romance. Yes, he is still a genius but he has lost that charisma that Prince of Nan Chen has which to me, is a pity.

My Verdict – Watch If You Are A Fan

Suffice to say that if you are a fan of One And Only, then Forever And Ever is a satisfying watch. It is like a cure for the pain from the prequel. The chemistry of the leads help to carry the drama through given that the plot is nothing great. The story development could certainly be more well-planned especially on the villain. Perhaps the producers want the drama’s focus to be on the main couple to make up for the angst in the historical version. It works to a certain extent but it also falters when the male lead is made out to be too innocent and courteous towards the woman he loves.

I guess if you like your male lead to be a shy and clueless man who doesn’t understand romance, then this drama will be a potential hit for you even if you haven’t watched the prequel. Some viewers do see that as cute and sweet as the female lead becomes the proactive one to guide him. While I do see love and sweetness in the couple, I also sense a lack of passion in the romance. This couple is the polar opposite of the one in You Are My Glory. It is not about the lack of kisses and skinship, but an absence of “fire” and desire in the relationship especially on the man’s side which is kind of unrealistic given that they are deeply in love.

For this Forever And Ever review, I would give it a score of 7.5/10. There are no annoying quarrels and breakup in the romance which are pluses for viewers. But the last few episodes that lead up to the ending are all predictable. It is not bad overall if you are a fan of the series and don’t mind more innocence to your romance.

Talented voice artist Shi Yi (Bai Lu) chances upon Zhousheng Chen at the airport. She felt a strange connection hence she bravely tries to get his phone number. Giving an excuse of not having one, Zhousheng Chen gave his email address instead.

When Shi Yi joins her friend on a business trip in Xian city where Chen works as a research scientist, they reconnect and meet after exchanging emails for six months. With Zhousheng Chen being pressed to get married, he courageously asked Shi Yi if she can be engaged with him. Her growing attraction and bizarre fascination made Shi Yi agree to his proposal.

A Dignified Romantic Melodrama Done With Polished Taste

Forever and Ever literally give you that vibe like you are reading your favorite romance novel. If you have seen the current trend of exaggerated melodramas focusing on themes of infidelity and greed, this series will bring you back to the basics.

Charismatic and classy, the narrative knows how to switch gears in pitching the saccharine moments. Both subtle and intentional. Then, in the emotional moments, the characters manage to convince their audience of their actions. No matter if it was out of greed or being selfless.

Forever and Ever incorporated the hero’s traditional family issues. Zhousheng Chen, as the rightful heir of the family, was subjected to a life he has no choice but to commit. Finally discovering his life’s purpose, with Shi Yi in it, he has to protect her, sadly from his family.

The last six episodes of the series captured quite an affecting spectacle that eventually settled the conflicts in one painful moment. Despite that harrowing last stretch, it attunes to the story’s message – of owning the love and happiness by protecting it.

Shi Yi and Zhousheng Chen’s Fated Love Story

Accordingly, the you-and-me-against-my-family spurred the driving conflict and emotion of Forever and Ever. Yet, it also propelled the message of how marriage can go invincible when wrapped with mutual true love.

We’ve learned how the purest kind of love can melt the coldest heart. Shiyi and Zhousheng Chen attest to how love need not happen in an instant. But when it does, nurturing it can lead to discovering your life’s greatest blessing.

Aside from the poignant moments traversed by the lead pair, the amusement level of how they grope their way as a couple provided the initial hook of the series. Allen Ren was an adorable instant husband we all wish we can buy on Taobao. His systematic way of professing adoration through research and observation makes him deserving of a place in dramaland’s best husband awardees this year.

Bai Lu as Shi Yi excellently grasped her character’s zest. In the original novel, Shi Yi is loved for her earnest desire to be with Zhousheng Chen. Her endearing ways of leading her cute fiancé effortlessly activate the pleasant scenes in the series.

Forever and Ever Series Musings

Switching from perky to passionate romance storytelling, Forever and Ever paid respect to its original work. Definitely, much appreciation is to be given to its lead pair who went beyond expectations in understanding their characters.

One Incarnation: Beautiful Bones is one of my favorite reads this year. It goes without saying, but I really expected a lot in the live adaptation. Thankfully, Bai Lu and Allen Ren projected nuanced portrayals to their roles. Yes, down to the smallest details.

Their subtly clueless moments exploring their rushed beautiful nonetheless relationship fuse well to reel viewers in sympathizing with their love predicaments. The series covers efficiently the standard elements of romantic narrative without going beyond sappy and weepy. it was just rightly done.

Adding to that, the side romance stories and individual moments molded well to the interesting plot dynamics. The majority of those came from the hero’s interestingly dysfunctional family.

A well-contrived narrative and remarkable characterizations easily lead you to dote on this series. You can watch it on a spree or you can take your time every day after a day’s work. It will yield the same heart-fluttering and gratifying effect.

The love story between Zhousheng Chen and Shi Yi is just ethereal. Shi Yi is an unwavering woman, “my heart has already belonged to someone, it will not change”. She kept her words; she did not fall for anyone else except Zhousheng Chen. Upon hearing Zhousheng Chen’s name, she approached him and gets her way into his heart. Meanwhile, Zhousheng Chen is not a proactive person, he never has to speak out loud about his feelings towards Shi Yi but everyone knows his love towards her. His love towards Shi Yi is evident through his small gestures, and most importantly eyes.Forever and Ever did a commendable job in delivering Zhousheng Chen and Shi Yi’s love story. The relationship between Zhousheng Chen and Shi Yi developed at a quick yet mellow pace. For those who didn’t watch One and Only, you might’ve felt a bit rushed and confused with the pacing of the relationship. However, they have waited for centuries to finally be together, they are given a second chance, and are finally together.At the beginning of their relationship, there are awkwardness and courtesy between them. Though they are still polite to each other, their gaze and small actions just simply show how much they adore and love each other. Forever and Ever is the type of romance drama where gaze and action speak louder than skinship. The drama also has some comedy elements to it. If you have watched One and Only before, you might laugh and smile after seeing how Zhousheng Chen went from a cold and ice-y general went to a cute and chubby chemistry professor. Zhousheng Chen’s actions towards Shi Yi are actually just like any other romcom drama, but it’s not entirely like any other romcom drama. Forever and Ever manages to make all those cliché actions into something new and fluffy. For instance, when Zhousheng Chen carries Shi Yi’s bag while watching it, I am sure that you will let out a smile. Moreover, there are also some characters in this drama that will make you laugh, a big shoutout to uncle Lin!!The second half of this drama is filled with sweetness and sugar! The romantic scenes in this drama will touch your heart, you can definitely feel every action and word that’s spoken by Zhousheng Chen and Shi Yi, it is genuine and full of love. And there is no misunderstanding, breakup in here. Their relationship is just the cutest and the sweetest!!The acting and chemistry of both Bai Lu and Ren Jialun definitely did not disappoint. The way Bai Lu and Ren Jialun convey their emotions through nuanced micro-expressions, and how they articulate every scene is just impeccable. Both of them managed to act so differently between One and Only and Forever and Ever, but still evoking the same affable charm and cute chemistry! Both Bai Lu and Ren Jialun need to get an award for their acting in One and Only and Forever and Ever. Both of their acting is infectious!! Especially Ren Jialun’s acting in forever and ever – his portrayal is more three-dimensioned, ZSC in the drama is more lively, grounded, and vulnerable than in the novel. In addition, I also love how both Bai Lu and Ren Jialun uses their own voice in the drama!!The entire drama production team has also successfully captured the essence and magic of the novel through the cinematography and script. The cinematography is dreamlike and majestic, with its warm color palette and color grading. Almost every shot in the drama can be beautifully framed. In addition, the drama also has a gorgeous wardrobe. I love how Shi Yi and Zhousheng Chen wear a subtle couple outfit, they have the same color scheme.Forever and Ever also has an enchanting music score, filled with love and a hint of angst. Forever and Ever also incorporates One and Only background music in it, the combination of that two music makes the drama more beautiful. The music is effectively run in each scene, making each scene more beautiful and touching. The lyrics of the OSTs are really beautiful and meaningful. Reading the song lyrics while watching the drama will either make you smile or cry..Due to censorship in China, the reincarnation storyline is censored, therefore, the production team alters the storyline. In the drama, Shi Yi doesn’t remember her past, but only fragments of it, and small impressions of it. For instance, during her visit to the city wall, she remembers a woman jumping down, but with different outfits and details from One and Only. In addition, I also love some alterations from the novel to the drama, instead of using a gun, Zhou Wenchuan uses a knife and… which led to the tragedy.The strong forte of Forever and Ever is definitely its details and conversation. Every conversation in Forever and Ever is magical. The scriptwriter just manages to make every conversation meaningful. The correlation conversation to their past lifetime is done so beautifully. In addition, the parallels between One and Only and Forever and Ever is impeccably done, it is done is a subtle yet clear manner.Here are some interesting details:1. During Zhousheng Chen’s past lifetime, he was only covered with the dusty white cloth when he died. This lifetime, he is allergic to dust”2. Shiyi’s crocs: zsc 520 – Zhousheng Chen I love youZhousheng Chen’s crocs: 忙着赚钱。sy 520 – busy earning money. Shi yi I love you3. In Shi yi’s past lifetime, she jumped down in sequin shoes to marry Zhousheng Chen. And this lifetime, Shi Yi wore a sequin dress to marry Zhousheng ChenThe only drawback of this drama is it might be confusing for those who didn’t watch One and Only or read the novel beforehand. For those who didn’t watch One and Only beforehand, watching Forever and Ever might be a little bit confusing, but not too confusing too. The drama provides few clips and hints of what happened in Shi Yi and Zhousheng Chen’s past life in Forever and Ever. But the drama didn’t thoroughly explain Zhousheng Chen’s family tree and hierarchy, so you might have a hard time understanding who’s who and what’s their relation with each other.Overall, Forever and Ever is a very beautiful romance drama, even though the drama doesn’t stay 100% true to the novel, the drama still captures the very essence of the relationship and plot beautifully.“I think, I must have used my beautiful bones as an exchange for you to have unrivaled beauty, as an exchange for you to remember me, as an exchange for you to be able to utter my name when your lips moved.”

If you’re still hesitating whether to watch One and Only first, I would highly recommend it as the prequel would give you a deeper understanding into the characters of Forever and Ever. Not only that, you’ll be able to appreciate the historical references and beautiful antique aesthetics much more given how they’re also interwoven with One and Only. Technically, Forever and Ever is a continuation of One and Only so it would only be logical to watch the first half before the second half. Plus, it’s a shame to miss out on a masterpiece like One and Only!PLOT & SETTINGS:Beware of One and Only spoilers (skip to next section if needed)…Even if I have yet to read the novel, I’m still very much engrossed by the poetic soul of this series. I guess it’s an advantage of having the novel’s author as the screenwriter. I’m captivated by how Shi Yi is able to recognise Zhou Sheng Chen’s “beautiful bones” (inner beauty) and falls in love with him all over again after having “reincarnated” from One and Only. While the reincarnations are not explicitly stated in this sequel due to censorship, the reason why the series is split into 2 parts with almost different sets of actors to begin with, they’re hinted throughout the show in a subtle and intricate way yet prominent enough for viewers to make the connections. This can be seen where Shi Yi becomes the dubbing actress for the drama One and Only. It is cleverly inferred that Shi Yi can recall the “memories” of their past lives and romantic attachments where she would cry while dubbing Zhou Sheng Chen’s demise or look longingly at the city wall where the past Shi Yi has presumably fallen to her death to follow her love so that he can “come to marry” her. Similarly, Shi Yi is also shown to prefer the turquoise dress because it reminds her of the dress she wore when she first met Zhou Sheng Chen in their past lives but dislike red dresses and has a fear of height as they evoke memories of her own death from One and Only.Furthermore, the modern Shi Yi’s family name is “Shi” instead of “Cui” to reflect how she has asked to be taken out of the family tree towards the end of One and Only in order to just be Zhou Sheng Chen’s beloved “Eleven [Shi Yi]” as well as to save her clan from the repercussions of her actions. The modern Zhou’s family house is also designed to follow the traditional Chinese style with a similar layout to the Zhou Manor in One and Only, from its iconic gate to the lotus pond and library where the past Shi Yi shared memorable moments with her Master. So in this case, the censorship may actually be a blessing in disguise as it encourages viewers to actively engage with the plot and draw comparisons between the 2 parallel narratives.CHARACTERS:Personally, I love how the modern Zhou Sheng Chen is portrayed as intelligent and caring (at least towards those he’s close to) but also rather aloof and not very well versed in human relationships due to his lonely and harsh upbringing. This then gives the audience an opportunity to witness how he is able to endure the pain of hardships and grow as a character, where he would gradually learn how to stand up to the opposing forces in his family and protect Shi Yi from their schemes despite all of his shortcomings. I find that raw and imperfect side of Zhou Sheng Chen very touching and humane as it shows that his heart is indeed made of gold, or should I say his “beautiful bones” are made of gold.While Forever and Ever tends to focus a bit more on Zhou Sheng Chen’s struggles, like how One and Only did with Shi Yi’s, our female lead is still very much in the limelight. I think there’s really no singular way of creating a strong female lead. And in this sequel, it’s Shi Yi who is able to draw Zhou Sheng Chen out of his shell, give him the strength and courage to deal with the power conflict that is rotting through the core of his own family. Given her memories of their star-crossed past lives, she took the initiative to approach him and patiently get to know him. In spite of Zhou Sheng Chen’s inexperience and insecurities, Shi Yi gives him her unconditional trust and love to make their relationship works. From the perspectives of those around her, their progress might appear to be too rushed and almost reckless. But I guess for those of us who have suffered the waterworks from One and Only, their second chance love could not have been fast enough.I must admit I enjoy Zhou Sheng Chen’s awkwardness when he’s around Shi Yi way too much. Like a true science man, he is very methodical in his romantic “research” and prefers to do things by the book. He doesn’t have a single romantic bone in him but willingly let himself be led by Shi Yi’s spontaneity and free spirit. Whatever he lacks in romance, Zhou Sheng Chen makes up for it with his own sincerity and loyalty. Together, they’re such an adorkable and charming couple that would make you giggle in one minute and swoon in the next. While their relationship doesn’t exactly restart from zero, they’re still taking the time to get to know each other little by little until they form a strong enough bond that can withstand any adversity.Aside from the main couple, my favourite character got to be Uncle Lin who is Zhou Sheng Chen’s driver but also his father figure and love counsellor. Growing up in such an austere family after having lost his birth parents, Zhou Sheng Chen only has Uncle Lin and his “grandmother” who know him best and actually care for him. I love how Uncle Lin is there to witness the couple right from the beginning, whether it be accompanying Zhou Sheng Chen on his ridiculous 8-hour night trips just to meet Shi Yi or being the unfortunate “third wheel” that interrupt their romantic moments.CAST:I absolutely love love love Bai Lu and Allen Ren together! Did I forget to mention how much I love them? It’s hard to find 2 actors who not only have that much chemistry with each other but also excel in both the modern and historical genres. I’ve only seen Allen Ren in historical dramas and I know that he can play a dashing general very well from Under the Power. But this is my first for a modern drama and Allen surely doesn’t disappoint. Suddenly, the serious and restrained face from One and Only is replaced with those shy smiles and cute baffled expressions that totally fit the socially awkward personality of the modern Zhou Sheng Chen. On the other hand, we all know from Love is Sweet that Bai Lu is classy and elegant enough to pull off any modern looks. She looks extremely beautiful those trench coats and tailored dresses, especially the traditional qipao.I thought Bai Lu and Allen Ren couldn’t fit any better than they did in One and Only but Forever and Ever just hit us with a totally different kind of charm. Even though they’re supposed to play the awkward couple at first, their chemistry is already off the roof. It’s kind of hard to believe that they’ve this much chemistry in Forever and Ever despite it being filmed before One and Only. Plus, their behind-the-scenes never fail to make me laugh. Who knows that the awkward couple is such a hilarious comedy duo in real life!SOUNDTRACKS:I thought that the production team tried very hard to not get flagged by censorship for “reincarnation”, but I guess they couldn’t be more blatant with the soundtracks, not that I’m complaining. Forever and Ever literally uses the same opening No Worries (无虞) by Mimi Lee and Jing Long from One and Only, showing that they’re both the same show. Growing up in an influential family, Cui Shi-Yi (Bai Lu) is already engaged since the day she was born. Shi-Yi was known as the niece of one of the most powerful men in the palace, Cui Guang.

Defining her personality, Shi-Yi can be described as a respectable yet elegant woman. She has a light character and reflects that she was raised carefully in the palace.

There came a time when his father, Li Qi-Lang went away and never returned. This circumstance causes Shi-Yi in distress and results in her being mute.

Meanwhile, our male lead, Zhousheng Chen (Allen Ren) is a commander who never lost a battle. He was also the Junior Prince of Nan Chen who leads the West State. Unfortunately, his brother, the emperor died.

This also cause him to be devastated because he swore that he would not come back to the Central State. However, he broke his promise and went to the Central State. While in the palace, Zhousheng Chen promised again that this time, he would not marry and bear a child.

Added to this, Zhousheng Chen accepted Shi-Yi as one of his disciples, because Shi-Yi’s clan has a close relationship with the late emperor. As Sheng-Chen and Shi-Yi continued to spend time together and slowly get attached, they find themselves falling in love with each other.

One and Only Peak Points

Heartbreaking Yet Well-Written

One and Only is one of those dramas that has a good plot. It is anguish filled yet you appreciate the pain. Knowing the situation of Sheng-Chen and Shi-Yi, their hearts slowly learned that they love and want to be with each other’s side.

However, their love story is not the type that you would expect it to be. Their duties and responsibilities are one big wall that hinders their growing feelings.

Moreover, politics is also a big factor in why can’t they be together. Shi-Yi is engaged to Crown Prince Zi Xing, and knowing the law of their state when it is already decided it’s hard to change and back out from it.

Meanwhile, Sheng-Chen also swore that he would not marry. Sheng-Chen internally felt regretful because he wanted to be with Shi-Yi but can’t do anything. Their love story literally lived up to the phrase ” you and me against the world.”

Chemistry of Lead Actors

As a fan of romantic dramas, many viewers hope the lead actors can have a sweet and passionate time together. However, the characters of Shi-Yi and Sheng-Chen have no kissing scene in the drama.

Just like the audience who are yearning that they can express their love to each other, I can feel that Shi-Yi and Sheng-Chen also badly wanted to do the things that couples do. Given their situation, they didn’t have the chance to be like other couples.

Bai Lu and Allen Ren have commendable acting skills. They were able to make a romance drama with eye contact as their way of telling that they love each other.

Unlike other romance dramas, One and Only provides a romance that is outside of the typical plot. It makes you love the characters and sympathized with their feelings.

One and Only Series Musings (Spoilers Alert!)

One and Only is my first traditional Chinese drama, and I must say that this drama gave a bunch of feelings and emotions. Personally, I am not a fan of sad dramas, because it takes me a long time to move on from their story.

If you love dramas that can make you cry, then you should add One and Only to your list! This drama has a strong lineup of casts along with its’ well-made plot.

Shi-Yi and Sheng-Chen’s loves story breaks my heart because I think that living during their time makes it hard for them to attain their happiness. All the rules, laws, and people discourage them to fight for their love.

Since I said that this drama made me cry, One and Only has a sad ending. Sheng-Chen was murdered by Jin-Rong and Zi-Ching. This causes Shi-Yi to be in her lowest state.

Just imagine that you can’t have a relationship with the man you love, and then suddenly he was dead. All the baggage made Shi-Yi take her own life. Their story reminds me of Romeo and Juliet, wherein the lovers choose to end their life just to be with the one they love.

Thankfully, there is a sequel to their story. If you still believe that Shi-Yi and Sheng-Chen can be together in another life, I recommend you to watch Forever and Ever and let’s all together hope that this time, they can get a happy ending.

Talented voice artist Shi Yi (Bai Lu) chances upon Zhousheng Chen at the airport. She felt a strange connection hence she bravely tries to get his phone number. Giving an excuse of not having one, Zhousheng Chen gave his email address instead.

When Shi Yi joins her friend on a business trip in Xian city where Chen works as a research scientist, they reconnect and meet after exchanging emails for six months. With Zhousheng Chen being pressed to get married, he courageously asked Shi Yi if she can be engaged with him. Her growing attraction and bizarre fascination made Shi Yi agree to his proposal.

A Dignified Romantic Melodrama Done With Polished Taste

Forever and Ever literally give you that vibe like you are reading your favorite romance novel. If you have seen the current trend of exaggerated melodramas focusing on themes of infidelity and greed, this series will bring you back to the basics.

Charismatic and classy, the narrative knows how to switch gears in pitching the saccharine moments. Both subtle and intentional. Then, in the emotional moments, the characters manage to convince their audience of their actions. No matter if it was out of greed or being selfless.

Forever and Ever incorporated the hero’s traditional family issues. Zhousheng Chen, as the rightful heir of the family, was subjected to a life he has no choice but to commit. Finally discovering his life’s purpose, with Shi Yi in it, he has to protect her, sadly from his family.

The last six episodes of the series captured quite an affecting spectacle that eventually settled the conflicts in one painful moment. Despite that harrowing last stretch, it attunes to the story’s message – of owning the love and happiness by protecting it.

Shi Yi and Zhousheng Chen’s Fated Love Story

Accordingly, the you-and-me-against-my-family spurred the driving conflict and emotion of Forever and Ever. Yet, it also propelled the message of how marriage can go invincible when wrapped with mutual true love.

We’ve learned how the purest kind of love can melt the coldest heart. Shiyi and Zhousheng Chen attest to how love need not happen in an instant. But when it does, nurturing it can lead to discovering your life’s greatest blessing.

Aside from the poignant moments traversed by the lead pair, the amusement level of how they grope their way as a couple provided the initial hook of the series. Allen Ren was an adorable instant husband we all wish we can buy on Taobao. His systematic way of professing adoration through research and observation makes him deserving of a place in dramaland’s best husband awardees this year.

Bai Lu as Shi Yi excellently grasped her character’s zest. In the original novel, Shi Yi is loved for her earnest desire to be with Zhousheng Chen. Her endearing ways of leading her cute fiancé effortlessly activate the pleasant scenes in the series.

Forever and Ever Series Musings

Switching from perky to passionate romance storytelling, Forever and Ever paid respect to its original work. Definitely, much appreciation is to be given to its lead pair who went beyond expectations in understanding their characters.

One Incarnation: Beautiful Bones is one of my favorite reads this year. It goes without saying, but I really expected a lot in the live adaptation. Thankfully, Bai Lu and Allen Ren projected nuanced portrayals to their roles. Yes, down to the smallest details.

Their subtly clueless moments exploring their rushed beautiful nonetheless relationship fuse well to reel viewers in sympathizing with their love predicaments. The series covers efficiently the standard elements of romantic narrative without going beyond sappy and weepy. it was just rightly done.

Adding to that, the side romance stories and individual moments molded well to the interesting plot dynamics. The majority of those came from the hero’s interestingly dysfunctional family.

A well-contrived narrative and remarkable characterizations easily lead you to dote on this series. You can watch it on a spree or you can take your time every day after a day’s work. It will yield the same heart-fluttering and gratifying effect.

Forever and Ever: Ep 2 Highlights

Remember the JOMO (or the Joy of Missing Out)!

1. Writer’s block

After his awkward date with Shiyi and her friends, Zhousheng Chen (ZSC) sits in front of his laptop with the screen showing a blank email. His friend Mei Xing (MX) teases him.

MX: You’ve been staring at the screen for the whole night, but you haven’t typed a word. (standing up to approach him) What’s so important (ZSC snaps his laptop shut) that you are so cautious about it?

ZSC: Just a girl I recently met.

MX: You have a lady friend that I don’t know?

ZSC: I’ve just met her, and I’ve only seen her three times by chance.

MX: Is she the kind that would marry you? (making a heart sign with his fingers)

ZSC: (annoyed) I notice that when it comes to my marriage you are more anxious than anybody else. She came to Xian on a trip. She’ll leave the day after tomorrow. I want to write her an email to say goodbye but I’m not quite sure how to word it.

Comments:

a. MX is right that ZSC is feeling cautious about emailing Shiyi. He isn’t good with words (just like that husband whom Xiaoyu interviewed).

ZSC says that he wants to write a goodbye email BUT I think he doesn’t want to say goodbye just yet. Furthermore, I think he wants to meet her again before she leaves Xian. But because of his reserved personality, he doesn’t know how to ask her out. He doesn’t want to sound too formal, too casual, or too desperate.

b. Zhousheng Chen describes Shiyi as a girl that he “recently met.” That’s not exactly true. He’s been exchanging emails with her for the past six months. But he doesn’t want to let MX to know about it. ShiYi wasn’t shy to tell her friend Xiaoyu about their long-distance communication.

c. Zhousheng Chen is downplaying their interaction: saying that they met “three times by chance.” The third time wasn’t accidental because they planned it.

d. Zhousheng Cheng found MX’s teasing (especially the heart sign) cheesy. I notice that whenever his male friends embarrass him, he becomes snappy with them. Best defense is offense.

MX: (sighing) Who would write emails nowadays? My suggestion. Give her a call or ask her out for dinner. That’s what normal people would do.

ZSC: (opens his laptop)

MX: One last question. What’s her name?

ZSC: Shi Yi.

MX: (breathing deeply) Shi Yi.

My comments:

a. ZSC doesn’t take his best friend’s advice…at least, not right now.

b. I prefer his choice of action. His response is more romantic because it’s personalized. Anybody can invite Shiyi to dinner but only he would remember about his promise at the Temple to lend Shiyi his guidebook. He even wrote notes in the book to tell her about the city. After that, he went to her hotel to hand it to her. To me, he went out of his way to try to get to meet her again before her departure.

b. Mei Xing’s tone of voice when he said Shi Yi’s name suggests that there’s a backstory here. Maybe he was the bad second male lead in the previous lifetime.

2. Mei Xing and Shiyi’s near-miss encounter at the city wall

The next day Shiyi visits the Ancient City Wall.

She sees a vision of herself, dressed in a red bridal dress, jumping off the high ramparts. She’s roused from her daydreaming by Xiaoyu who asks her if she’s thinking of the ZSC.

She explains that the Junior Prince had one soul mate who was the Crown Princess. It was said that after he died, she jumped off the building and died for love.

While she recounting the story to Xiaoyu, Mei Xing spots her from a distance. He’s also touring the place. It goes without saying that he’s taken by her beauty. Unlike Zhousheng Chen, who walked past her at the airport security, he falls in love with her at first sight.

He tries to take a snapshot of her as she and Xiaoyu begin to walk away. He chases after them but too late! They elude him.

Hmmm…I didn’t watch the prequel of “Forever and Ever” but I’m sure Mei Xing’s chance encounter of Shiyi at the Wall is fated, too. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was the one who caused her to jump off because he cornered her or something. But in this lifetime, just like in the past, he still can’t have her love.

3. Getting his phone number

Shiyi and Xiaoyu return to their hotel and Zhousheng Chen misses them at the lobby by a few seconds. Since he doesn’t know her room number nor her phone number, he can’t deliver the guidebook to her directly. He’s about to turn away when the receptionist offers to give the package to her if he leaves it behind with ShiYi’s name.

Meanwhile, Shiyi calls the front desk to get help printing some materials for her job.

She goes to the reception desk and misses Zhousheng Chen by a few seconds again. When the receptionist sees her name, she hands over package. Shiyi learns that ZSC just left so she runs outside, hoping to catch up with him.

But he’s nowhere to be seen. Unknown to her, he’s crouching down to buy live crabs from a street vendor.

Side comment: When I saw that street vendor and those “pets” he was selling in those little cages, I immediately thought of coronavirus. Goodness! This man must be violating a number of health codes.

Back in her room, Shiyi looks through the guidebook then fires off an email, “I got the book. Could you give me your lab number? I want to give you a call.” Unlike ZSC, she doesn’t waste a minute thinking about what to say to him.

In his corner of the world, he stares at the screen then types his phone number.

She calls him straight away.

SY: Hello? May I speak to…

ZSC: (interrupting) You got the book?

SY: Yes. Thanks.

ZSC: The book is quite nice. It’s not like those travel books published just for money, and there aren’t ads inside.

SY: I’ll read it carefully. I saw there were many people at the bus station that day. It took you a while to finally get on.

ZSC: It was my first time riding a bus. I didn’t expect it’d be that crowded.

SY: I was going to give you a ride. But it turned out you guys left early, and we had to trouble He Shan to call us a cab. (she pauses)

ZSC: (smiling) No trouble at all.

SY: You didn’t do it, so of course you’d say so. Please thank him for me.

ZSC: (not saying anything)

Comments:

a. His excitement is notable. She’d barely got a word in when he interrupted her to ask about the book.

b. He doesn’t like commercialization. He’s very mindful of Chinese culture and tradition.

c. The fact that it was his first time riding a public bus should have alerted SY of his privilege upbringing. Did he always take the car then?

d. Shiyi doesn’t really want to talk about the book. After thanking him, she quickly changes the topic to the private taxi he hired for them.

e. She’s baiting him. After she mentions that He Shan called the cab for them, she pauses as if she’s waiting for his comment. When he answers “No trouble at all,” she takes it as a confirmation that it was him who ordered the cab. It wasn’t really any trouble for him because he’s thoughtful that way.

f. She deliberately misinterprets. She teases him that for HIM, it was no problem because he did nothing. But she knows the truth because she actually saw him talking on the phone. It shouldn’t take her long to figure out that he borrowed He Shan’s phone and made the call himself.

When she asks him to thank his assistant for her, he doesn’t reply anymore because it’s understood that she’s thanking him.

Overall, I like their phone conversation because they’re developing a language of their own. Since they’re sharing new experiences, they’re getting to know how the other person thinks and they can add a layer of meaning or subtext to their conversation that’s understandable only to them.

At this point, their conversation could have ended since she already expressed her gratitude. But he seems unwilling to end their talk so he continues the small talk.

ZSC: So, are you having a good time in Xian?

SY: Yes. I went to the Ancient City Wall today? Have you been there?

ZSC: (sighing) The Ancient City Wall? I haven’t had time to visit that place.

SY: Then I recommend that you go there. You can get a very nice view of the city standing up there. Most importantly you can feel the history of that place.

ZSC: Sure. I’ll visit that place when I have time.

Her friend Xiaoyu becomes impatient and coaches her on what to say next.

Xiaoyu: Say something flattering. What are you talking about?

ZSC: Is your friend beside you?

SY: It’s Hong Xiaoyu.

When he realizes that their conversation isn’t private, he becomes shy again. He wants to hang up but ShiYi improvises.

ZSC: Then I’ll go back to work.

SY: Ok.

Xiaoyu: (whispering) Ask him out. Tell him you are leaving!

ZSC: Goodbye!

SY: I’ve been curious about what the institute looks like. Could you show me around?

ZSC: The institute is kinda boring actually….But I happen to have some time today. I think I can give you a tour.

SY: Okay! Then I’ll go look for you. Right now!

ZSC: Here’s my address.

Noteworthy:

a. Shiyi is the “pursuer” in this relationship. She’s more assertive and bold in going after him.

b. However, this doesn’t mean that he isn’t interested in her. Take for instance this rendezvous at his lab. She suggested it but he’s receptive to the idea. In fact, he’s going out of his way to meet her at his lab when he’s already working from home.

4. Her secret joy

While she waits for him at the gate of his institute, her manager calls her up to check on her return home. Her manager asks her if she secretly married a low-key rich guy because she dropped everything to go to Xian.

Her manager’s comment tells us that Shiyi wasn’t really free to go on this trip with Xiaoyu but she was willing to leave it all on the off-chance that he would appear.

Shiyi defends her decision by reminding her manager that she took only one holiday this year. Besides, she says she isn’t interested in rich guys. Her manager asks her what kind of guy she likes then.

Shiyi pauses for a moment. Before she can think of a response, Zhousheng Chen comes out from behind a post and walks towards her.

Smiling, Shiyi tells her manager, “The person I like must be a professor, and he must be a chemistry professor.” Her manager is confused but Shiyi hangs up.

Then, the professor in question stops before her, and says, “You’re here.” She nods yes.

I like this moment because it’s her secret and private joke. Nobody but her understands what she’s talking about. Her manager thinks she’s joking but she cannot be more serious. This is the guy that she likes and has been waiting for in this reincarnated life.

Thus, when Zhousheng Chen tells her, “You’re here,” – meaning, she arrived at the gate of his institute – there’s a another context. It signifies that SHE found HIM.

She’s smiling because she’s finally reached her destination.

On their way in, she tells him that he looks a little different that day. She can’t describe how, though. I think she’s alluding to his aura. He looks like a distinguished professor.

He gives her a tour, and he impresses her with his straightforward explanations. His assistant appears

Assistant: They told me that Professor Zhousheng brought a lady here. I immediately thought of you.

SY: You’ve never brought a friend here?

ZSC: No never.

Shiyi smiles at that bit of info. The Assistant invites her to dinner and urges ZSC to be a good host and treat her to a meal.

I think the Assistant’s comment stirred him to action.

ZSC: Would you like to have dinner with us?

SY: I’m free tonight but I want to look around a little more. May I?

ZSC: Then let’s go to dinner after touring the lab.

I’m glad that she said that she wanted a tour first because that was the main reason she dropped by anyway.

5. Memorize her phone number: 1314 11 520 99

Lol. I’ll teach you how to memorize her number in a bit…

At the dinner, everything goes well until ZSC leaves the table to pay the check. His Assistant offers to pay because the dinner was his idea, but ZSC refuses.

I don’t think ZSC intends to show off. Judging by the way he made sure that Shiyi ate well and enjoyed herself, I think he wants to be a good host. It wasn’t enough that he was a good host when he toured Shiyi at the lab, he also wants to be a good host at dinner because it’s her last night at Xian. He wants to send her off well.

But while he’s gone to pay the bill, one of the guests asks Shiyi if she’s his girlfriend. She answers no. Then, another guest mentions that he already has a fiancée. Needless to say, Shiyi stiffens at this piece of gossip. ZSC overhears the chatter but doesn’t say anything, and Shiyi excuses herself.

SY: I still have things to do. I have to go now.

ZSC: Let me take you back.

SY: No. It’s okay. I can easily get a ride.

ZSC: It’s already late. It’s not safe for you to go back alone.

Short of arguing with him, she has no choice but to leave with him. They ride home in silence. She rolls down her window and looks outside again – just like she did in Episode 1.

No doubt she’s despondent because she found the love of her life, Zhousheng Chen, but he’s marrying another person.

At her hotel, she forces a smile and bids him a curt goodbye. She heads for the door without waiting for his response. So he starts talking to her back. “I heard the conversation between you and my students at the restaurant. They misunderstood the situation. It’s not true. I am thinking about getting married, but I haven’t found the one I want to marry yet.”

To me, he sounds like he’s blabbering. He doesn’t want her to leave without clearing the air between them.

She smiles again. She looks happier. She nods and utters, “Uh” – which I guess means, “Okay” in Klingon. She follows it up with, “Okay, I’ll head inside.”

He doesn’t say a word, but he still looks dejected. Given that he has poor social skills, he’s probably wondering whether she believes him or not.

He doesn’t expect her to turn around and walk back to him.

SY: Do you believe in fortune-telling?

ZSC: Fortune-telling? Technically, I do not believe in it but if the results are good enough, I’d subconsciously tell myself that it’d come true.

SY: May I read your palm?

ZSC: You know how to read palms?

SY: I’ve learned a little. Kinda useless though, it may not be correct.

a. I like Shiyi because she’s got game. While Zhousheng Chen appears hesitant or at a loss for words, Shiyi isn’t a shy thing. She knows how to take charge and handle the situation.

b. The fortune-telling trick is a great way to flirt with him without sounding…well, brazen.

c. She accomplishes two things here. First, she gets to hold his hand. Second, she lets him know that she’s interested in him.

ZSC: (offering his palm to her) What do you see?

SY: (smiling) I can see your past.

ZSC: My past?

SY: Mmm. Do you believe in reincarnation? We knew each other in a previous life.

ZSC: (speechless)

She’s indirectly telling him that if he’s looking for that woman to marry, then he’s found her; she’s that woman.

SY: Just kidding. Hope you don’t mind.

ZSC: I believe you. It’s fate that brings people together.

Remember what he just said. He said that strictly speaking, he doesn’t believe in fortune-telling. However, he’d allow himself to believe in it, IF THE RESULTS WERE GOOD. lol. In other words, he likes the idea that they’ve met before, in a past life, so he’s going to believe her words. If she says they met in a previous life, then it must be true. They’re fated to meet each other.

SY: (thinking to herself) I can’t believe this is something he would say.

ZSC: So you’ll leave tomorrow?

SY: I have a lot of work waiting for me. I have to go back.

ZSC: Could you please give me your phone number? Then when I don’t have internet access, I can at least call you.

SY: (stunned)

ZSC: Uhh… It’s okay if you mind it.

SY: I don’t mind! But you don’t have a cell phone and I didn’t bring pen and paper. (turns to go inside the hotel) Wait a second.

ZSC: It’s okay. Just tell me and I’ll remember it.

SY: 1314 11 520 99

Lol. I don’t know Chinese but I had a pager (which was widely used in the 1980s, lol). I know that a sequence of numbers could be used to send “I love you” or some private message.

Shiyi’s phone number is actually a series of coded text.

According to wiki Chinese internet slang 1314 means “Forever” or “one life, one world”

11 is Shiyi’s name in Chinese.

520 sounds like “wo ai ni” which means “I love you”

99 means “the wish for a couple to be together for a long time.” And that’s how easy it is to memorize her number.

When you think about this, when she said her number and he repeated it, they were actually saying “I love you forever and ever” to each other. Ugh!

ZSC: Got it.

SY: Then, I’m leaving. Careful on your way back.

6. The poetry

Upon her return to Shanghai, her manager interrogates her on her special man. But apart from his job as a scientist, she knows next to nothing about him. She doesn’t think he’s from Xian because he said he was leaving that week. She guesses that he’s going home. She tells her manager that she can’t be too inquisitive about him. Her manager is worried to know that he isn’t from Shanghai either. All her jobs are based in Beijing, Shanghai and Guanzhou, and if he’s based anywhere other than these three cities, she’ll have to be traveling between jobs a lot.

SY: Don’t you think you’re worrying too much?

Manager: People that don’t plan ahead will face troubles. You can’t go further until you’ve solved the practical problems. Otherwise, you’re just wasting time. You need to ask him about his home and family in a subtle way.

Comments:

a. As I told @Good Twin, there’s a trope that’s unique to Cdramas because the romance inevitably spans multiple cities. In Kdramas, the romance takes place in one location. Generally, the setting is Seoul. (In Lee Minho’s “The King: Eternal Monarch,” Busan was the capital for the parallel universe.) But in Cdramas, the male and female leads can be in different cities. So one trope that we’ll regularly encounter in Cdramas is the driving trope. It’s proof of the man’s love if he can travel in a car, for hours, across hundreds of miles, to reach the woman.

b. There’s a foreshadowing. The conflict in this drama stems from his home and family.

After her conversation she calls him up and is told that he already left Xian. Since she only has his office number, she’ll have to contact him again by email or wait till he calls her up on the phone.

That night, she sits by the window in her bedroom.

I’m not sure if she’s memorizing a script or writing a journal on her laptop when she narrates, “In the library, there was an unfinished poem of hers. She even took it as one of her secrets. After she grew up, she started to understand the real meaning of the poem. ‘The woman’s beauty is offered, while the man’s soul is taken. For the affinity between one another, the heart is overturned.’ She’s given her beauty and soul, and I’m head over heels in love with him.”

You know that I’m not a literature major, right? I don’t let this fact stop me from analyzing poems, though. “The woman’s beauty is offered, while the man’s soul is taken. For the affinity between one another, the heart is overturned.”

I think this poem idealizes love. She offers her beauty, which we know is ephemeral and fleeting, and takes his soul, which we know is enduring and eternal. But because there’s this union and harmony between them, nothing is really lost between them. Everything is gained and shared, and the heart is overjoyed.

That’s my interpretation of the poem.

7. Lastly, inviting her out for dinner

As Shiyi surmised, Zhousheng Chen left Xian to return to his family in Zhenjiang. His friend Mei Xing went him.

Back home, he’s given a warm welcome by his younger sister, Zhou WenXing (WX), younger brother Zhou Wenchuan (WC) and his fiancée, and the youngest in the family Zhou Shengren (Ren). His mother nags him to find a wife. He tells everyone, “The girl I love hasn’t showed up yet. It can’t be forced.”

WX comes to his defense, but their mother insists that she’d like to see him marry in May. To this, Zhousheng Chen firmly answers that he’ll make his own decision about his marriage. WC reminds their mother that he’s the one getting married in April. She should attend to his wedding first. His fiancée Jiaren looks grim.

WC then brings his older brother to a meeting with their elders. They’re waiting to hear from Zhousheng Chen about the new direction their family corporation under his leadership. ZSC announces that a shift in corporate mission.

ZSC: In recent years, we’ve been investing in overseas projects, like buying properties and utility companies. This has already shaken the foundation of our family business. For generation, our family has always had our foundations rooted in national industries no matter in times of prosperity or decline.

Furthermore, he’s planning an investment meeting in the following month to attract investors to develop the domestic manufacturing sector. He’s hosting the investment meeting to announce that their corporation is going to redirect their investment funds to domestic manufacturing. To this end, he would like to have the full support of the elders.

In other words, his corporate vision is “China First.” Lol. Sounds familiar?

His proposal doesn’t go over well with the elders. They tell him he should get rested first and he shouldn’t make a hasty decision. Then, one by one they exit. He cuts a lonely figure in the great hall.

Alone that night, he recalls Shiyi’s parting words in Xian. She told him that they knew each other in their previous life. He reflects on it.

Then BITES his lip. That’s a mannerism that this actor deliberately used to define his character. Whenever Zhoucheng Shen is pondering over something or is embarrassed, he bites his lower lip.

Note: This is NOT like that hair-flipping tic that Kim SeonHo does in “Hometown Cha Cha Cha.”

Then he decides to go to Shanghai.

Driver: Where are we going?

ZSC: Uncle Lin, how long does it take to drive from here to Shanghai?

Driver: Driving during the night would take longer. Four hours. We’d get to Shanghai at about 11:00 tonight.

ZSC: Let’s go to Shanghai.

Driver: Right now?

ZSC: Yes.

Driver: For work?

ZSC: To meet a friend.

Driver: You have a friend in Shanghai?

ZSC: Let’s go.

On the way there, he calls ShiYi a few times but she’s dubbing. When she comes out of her studio, her assistant hands her the phone. She calls up the unfamiliar number.

SY: Hello, who’s this?

ZSC: It’s me. Zhousheng Chen.

SY: Oh, it’s you.

ZSC: Are you done with work?

SY: I just finished. That’s why I missed your call.

ZSC: It’s okay. (then hesitantly) If you have time, would you like to have supper with me?

There! He finally listened to Mei Xing’s advice. This is what normal people do.

SY: (without hesitation) Sure! Where?

ZSC: Tell me your address. I’ll go pick you up.

SY: It’s okay. You can send me the address of the restaurant. I’ll meet you there.

ZSC: Let me pick you up.

He gets brownie points for this. He’s insisting on picking her up because he knows it’s late for a girl like her to be going around on her own in the city.

SY: Okay. I’ll send you my address in a bit.

ZSC: Okay. I’ll let you know when I’m there.

SY: Bye.

And of course, she runs out to meet him. She stumbles and he’s there to catch her from falling.

She notices that he’s dressed in a suit and tells him that he looks different. I think she keeps on noticing that he “looks different” because in the back of her mind, she’s expecting to see him in traditional garb. Lol.

ZSC: Because of the suit?

SY: Mmm.

ZSC: This is what I usually wear when I’m not at the institute. Does it bug you?

SY: Not at all. It fits you.

I’m sure though in the future, he’ll be wearing more relaxed outfit to match her. But he’ll wear suits on important days because she said she liked him in suits.

She wonders about the chauffeured car they’re riding in. (It’s a Mercedes-Maybach.) and dismisses it as a perk of his new job.

SY: Did you meet someone important before this?

ZSC: A few elders.

SY: (thinking to herself) Why does he always give short responses that lead to nowhere?

Lol. “A few elders” is an understatement. He could hardly tell her that he had a frustrating meeting with the elders of his company who rejected his proposal and set him running to her.

She calls him “weirdo” in her mind. But luckily for him, she doesn’t mind that because she’s besotted with him.

And she smiles like the cat that got the cream.

The episode ends here. I think it’s funny how it took him this long to follow Mei Xing’s advice to just pick up the phone and ask her out for dinner.

That’s it. I’m not going to edit this (sorry, grammar nazis!) because I’ve other dramas to review now.

Forever And Ever: EP 5 – 6 Recap

Took me a while again to do this. For the next few episodes, I will avoid going into the details as the recap is too long.

EP 5

Zhousheng Chen is back in Germany, in his research lab. His fellow colleagues found out that he has a fiancee now and needs to go back China to be with her, they are surprised he is not devoting himself to Science.

In Shanghai, Shi Yi is at her recording studio with Mei Lin chatting. Mei Lin teased her about the daily afternoon tea, dinner and supper. Shi Yi just ignored her and asked for a break because voicing-over for One and Only made her cry too much. Mei Lin agreed with the break but is not letting the topic go and asked who the lucky man is. Shi Yi said it’s the same guy I told you about. Mei Lin is happy for her and told her that her romance and career streaks are good, she just got nominated for an award. Before Mei Yin could say anymore, Shi Yi’s phone alarm ringed, it’s 11.28pm, time for the call with Zhousheng Chen.

She excused herself and walked out to the rooftop and her phone rang. (So on time.) It’s Zhousheng Chen, doing the usual greetings and get to know her. He asked what time she starts work and whether she is done with it now. She said she started at 1pm and is just done.

Then she asked why didn’t he call this afternoon and he’s just busy. Then he coughed a little and she insisted that he go and take meds now. When she glanced downstairs, she saw him waiting downstairs, surprised that he is back. Wait for me a sec, she said.

Shi Yi immediately ran to take her bag and goes to meet him downstairs. She was like why didn’t you tell me that you are coming back, he wanted to give her a surprise. She asked if he is going anywhere tonight, he said no, his sole mission tonight was to send her home.

He volunteered to carry her bag while walking to the car. (That’s Bai Lu trying to stifle her laughter at how awkward Ren Jialun looked with her bag.)

In the car, Shi Yi asked for her bag back because Zhousheng Chen is still carrying it. Haha. And then Shi Yi greeted Lin-Shu (Lin Uncle) and asked what his full name is. Lin-Shu said, “Zhou Lin.” And actually his nephew Lin Fei’s full name is Zhou Linfei. Zhousheng Chen clarified that the senior butlers at home are actually surnamed Zhou. (Woah! Every convo we learned something.)

This is probably the second time Zhousheng Chen is sending Shi Yi home. Shi Yi invited him upstairs because she wanted to make herbal tea for him as he seemed to have caught a cold. Zhousheng Chen thinks that it’s too late plus it’s a girl’s home and he’s never been to one before, alone. Shi Yi “finds him a little …” and he finished the sentence for her, “dull?” She nodded.

Talk turned to how Zhousheng Chen classify their relationship as being an experiment. What if their experiment is wrong, Shi Yi asked. Zhousheng Chen corrected her that there is no wrong or right with the direction of the experiment, only the method might go wrong. If the method is wrong, they can change the method but the main direction won’t change. Applying this theory on them, he assured her that the fact they are together now will not change, but if the current way they are getting to know each other isn’t working, they can change to another way of getting along. (Wow, this is what you get from dating a chem professor.) Shi Yi is convinced and just said, “Let’s go.” He just followed. Lol! (Is that her way of distracting him?)

First time in her house, Zhousheng Chen looked around curiously before sitting down on the couch. Shi Yi brewed a cup of herbal tea for him and advised him that it’s too early to wear so little when Spring just arrived. Weather is still fluctuating. Shi Yi asked him to drink the tea and he will recover by tomorrow. Zhousheng Chen is like really? Shi Yi told him that he wouldn’t think that she is using this as an excuse to get him to come upstairs. Zhousheng Chen then confessed that he actually wants to come up but was just careful not to move their relationship too fast since they were fast in engaging. Shi Yi encouraged him to just let her know whenever he wants to come.

Zhousheng Chen glanced at his watch and Shi Yi realised that he needs to go back to Zhenjiang. She told him to drink up quickly and set off soon so that he can at least catch 2 hours of sleep when he got back. He gulped down the herbal drink in one go, clearly not enjoying it.

Shi Yi walked him to the lift and Zhousheng Chen congratulated her on the award nomination. So that is one of the reason he is back, another reason is to prep for the engagement party. He promised to turn up for the award ceremony and then he left.

Downstairs, while waiting for Lin-Shu, he started to observe Shi Yi’s whereabouts in her house by looking at the lights in her house. He noticed that Shi Yi went to shower. And then Lin-Shu is back.

Lin-Shu smelled herbal on him and asked if he drank anything herbal since he hated it as a child. Zhousheng Chen said yes, since it’s just a cup of herbal tea and he doesn’t want to disappoint Shi Yi. And then Lin-Shu got curious over how they met. Zhousheng Chen said they met at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport and that she was the one who approached him. He felt lucky to have Shi Yi liking him.

And then the lights in the bathroom turned off, Zhousheng Chen observed that Shi Yi took 25 minutes to shower. (Ha, but why?!)

Zhousheng Chen got back to Zhenjiang in the morning, falling asleep in the car. Lin-Fei got his suit ready but Lin-Shu said to let Zhousheng Chen sleep for a little while more.

And then he changed into his suit and appeared for breakfast with his family. Before sitting down with his family, he toasted a cup of wine at an empty table first. The Second Uncle did the same as well.

And then Second Uncle asked Zhousheng Chen if he slept well last night. Zhousheng Chen was like nope, not sleeping a wink as he was in Shanghai. Second Uncle wanted his fiancee to come to Zhenjiang and learn the business ropes from Mother but Zhousheng Chen rejected the idea. Mother said maybe you need to re-think your choice, Zhousheng Chen was like Shi Yi is it, she is the most suitable for me.

Back in his own room, Zhousheng Chen got asked by Lin-Fei whether they need to change the bed since Shi Yi is coming. Zhousheng Chen doesn’t think there is a need since he has been sleeping on it just fine. Lin-Fei is worried over the bed not able to take on weight.

But as Zhousheng Chen walked from second level to the first level, he changed his mind. He told Lin-Fei to change it. Lin-Fei then turned to Lian-Sui, let’s change the bed to the biggest one. Zhousheng Chen then added on to Lian-Sui that they should also get the guest room ready for him. And then he left.

Lian-Sui is puzzled. The couple is not sleeping in the same room? Lin-Fei says it’s just for the first day, men being men. Lian-Sui is not getting it. (Does anyone get it? Lol!)

We go back to Shanghai where Shi Yi is recording the final scene of One and Only. After wrapping up, Shi Yi needs to go and rent a dress for the awards ceremony. Wang Yingdong suggested that Shi Yi get a dress from the sponsors but Shi Yi does not want the hassle.

At the shop, it is suggested that Shi Yi try on a red dress because of her classical beauty. (This is referring to a girl who can carry the traditional outfits like the ancient beauty.) Shi Yi said she does not like red colour since young. (This is due to how she jump to her death in One And Only, wearing red to go marry Little Nan Chen Prince.) But Shi Yi would be able to accept it once for her wedding.

And then Mei Lin received a phone call from Wang Yingdong, saying that he got an outfit for Shi Yi. When Mei Lin told Shi Yi, she said she’s already got one, pointing to the dress she is wearing. So Mei Lin joked that Wang Yingdong got rejected again and she felt pity for him three seconds.

We cut to a scene of a very old house. Inside, we see a grandmother with a girl. Zhou Wenchuan is serving them grapes, and very careful to make sure the grapes are clean. The girl ignores him and said goodbye to grandmother, saying she will visit again.

Zhou Wenchuan goes after the girl, calling her Xiaoman. He wants to send her home but Xiaoman doesn’t think it’s very convenient to take his car (due to his married status). Wenchuan tried to hold her back and it’s at this moment, Zhousheng Chen arrived too.

Zhousheng Chen saw them tugging at each other. Xiaoman informed Zhousheng Chen that the engagement gifts he wanted is already en-route to Shanghai and Zhousheng Chen thanks her. Xiaoman said goodbye and left. Wenchuan chased after her again, telling Zhousheng Chen to say bye on his behalf to maternal grandmother.

Zhousheng Chen looked at them with a disapproving eye after they left.

Zhousheng Chen went in the house and greeted maternal grandmother. Grandma said Xiaochuan and Xiaoman just left and she asked why aren’t they getting married. (Hmm, doesn’t Grandma know Zhou Wenchuan is already married?) Lin-Shu wanted to explain but Zhousheng Chen subtly stopped him. And then he goes into the house to fix things here and there.

After that, he spent some time with Grandma and said he’s not leaving tonight. He’s also told Grandma about his fiancee that they are getting engaged first and dating after. Grandma is cute, oh is that the trend now? Lol!

In the courtyard, Zhousheng Chen frets over whether Shi Yi will like the engagement gowns he sent over. He regrets not bringing her to let choose now, but doing that now is too late. As if on cue, we get a phone call from Shi YI who has just received two gowns at her door. She rang Zhousheng Chen up to tell him how much she likes them. Zhousheng Chen looked so glad. An item off the checklist.

Next, Zhousheng Chen asked Lin-Shu to accompany him to the river side. And we see them changing seats with each other, Zhousheng Chen taking over the wheel now. Zhousheng Chen wants to warm-up his driving skills again. Lin-Shu just told Zhousheng Chen to start driving without further ado. (There’s a hot search about how rich Zhousheng Chen is… and one netizen said, yeah so rich that he learns driving in a Maybach, the luxurious car he owned! Haha!)

That night, maternal grandmother brought a glass of warm milk to Zhousheng Chen to aid him in sleeping and asked what the name is of his fiancee. “Shi Yi”, said Zhousheng Chen smiling. And then Grandma started talking about his deceased mother and that till death, Zhousheng Chen’s mother did not have a wedding with his father. (What?! The Mother we saw is his step-mother. No wonder, she is mean.)

We are at the Awards Ceremony. Shi Yi arrived in a jade-green colour gown, which is her favourite colour. (Hong Xiaoyu said it earlier when the gowns arrived at Shi Yi’s house.)

Zhousheng Chen is running late (because he drove) and he has already missed Shi Yi on the stage once, receiving the award, and now Zhousheng Chen arrived in time to see Shi Yi on the stage who is on it a second time, giving an award out to One and Only. It looks like Zhousheng Chen knew someone from within, who brought him in and sat him down at the side front row.

When Shi Yi is done with giving out the award, she came down and sat beside him, asking why he sat there. He said, “I told them I wanted to surprise you and just give me a seat to have a good view of you.” Shi Yi was like, “This is reserved for the VIP sponsors. I’m done already, let’s go.”

And off they go.

EP 6

Walking out, Shi Yi confirmed that Zhousheng Chen knew the sponsors. Zhousheng Chen just said that it’s one of his old friends.

Mei Lin came out too and stopped the couple in time to have a formal introduction with Zhousheng Chen. When Mei Lin’s hand did not let go of Zhousheng Chen’s hand while shaking hands, Shi Yi told her to watch it. Haha. Mei Lin has been wanting to meet the man who won Shi Yi over. And Zhousheng Chen hopes that he did not disappoint.

The couple walked out to the car and Shi Yi is surprised not to see Lin-Shu around. Zhousheng Chen joked that Lin-Shu is tired of the long drive and wants to retire. Shi Yi just got in the car and threw him a doubtful glance. Zhousheng Chen saw it, and asked, “Do you think I can’t drive?”

In order to prove it, he showed his driving license to Shi Yi.

(Zhousheng Chen’s birthdate is 1991, Oct 11th.)

Shi Yi commented on how young he looked, like a student. Zhousheng Chen thinks that he is not looking any older now. (Little Nan Chen Prince also had a moment in One and Only where he thought he wasn’t much older than Cui Shi Yi.)

Shi Yi just said he looks proper now. (Or she might mean mature.)

Zhousheng Chen wants to bring Shi Yi to meet the seamstress who made the gown she is wearing and it’s quite a distance thus he offered a snack to her for the long car ride. Shi Yi noticed that it’s a kid’s snack, asking if it is his favourite snack when young. Zhousheng Chen said yeah, it’s from maternal grandmother, still taking care of him like a kid.

Shi Yi tried one and then gave one to Zhousheng Chen, feeding him in fact.

And we have a charged moment here.

Both looked a little tense from the intimate moment.

Recovering from it, Zhousheng Chen asked Shi Yi if she prefers the AC or the window down. Shi Yi chose the latter. And so Zhousheng Chen crossed over to get the window to come down, coming very close to Shi Yi.

And here we go, a second charged moment.

Zhousheng Chen realised what he has done, he could have controlled the window from the driver’s seat (which is what Shi Yi thought to herself as well).

Going back to his driver’s seat, he just said we should go. Agreeing and somewhat flustered, Shi Yi put on her seat belt. And finally off we go! (At least 5 mins of screen time just being in the car!)

The couple arrived at their destination, at the Wang family who has been making clothes for over ten generations already. (Wow!) They had made the cheongsam too.

Lin-Shu is there, waiting for them, having his “smelly tofu” snack as usual. Shi Yi is surprised to see him there and Lin-Shu clarified that it was Zhousheng Chen who wanted to spend some lone time with her, not that he doesn’t want to drive them. Heh!

In they go.

The Wang family came, happy to see Zhousheng Chen and Shi Yi in person. Wang grandmother has not seen Zhousheng Chen since he’s four and to think this time, Zhousheng Chen brought his fiancee! Wang Xiaoman exclaimed that Shi Yi is wearing Wang second brother’s masterpiece and so he won!

The Wang family is gushing over how pretty Shi Yi is, her looks, her figure and that all seamstresses would want to make clothes for her to match with her beauty.

And since Shi Yi has already worn this jade-green gown, she should not wear it again for the engagement party.

Xiaoman anxiously wants to take Shi Yi’s measurements in person and to make the next gown for her.

Therefore Shi Yi went in to let Xiaoman take the measurements in person so as to be precise. Wang big brother took the opportunity to ask Shi Yi why did she choose this gown and we have a flashback moment from One and Only where Cui Shi Yi wore this jade-green colour too when she became a disciple of Little Nan Chen Prince. (This is the first time that the drama made it look like a memory that Shi Yi has from her past life. The jade-green colour represented her favourite moment in her previous lifetime.)

But Shi Yi just replied that she likes the colour very much without going into the details.

Done, Chen-Shi couple and Lin-Shu left with the two Wang brothers and Xiaoman sending them off. Xiaoman looked a little down after they left. And the two brothers revealed in their convo that Xiaoman was Zhou Wenchuan’s ex-girlfriend and they broke up after a quarrel and no one would imagine that Zhou Wenchuan went to marry another girl soon after.

The next day, Zhousheng Chen is waiting for Shi Yi to get off work at her recording studio. When she came out, he handed her a gift, congratulating her on winning the award. It’s a meteorite watch. Shi Yi wants to wear it everyday but worried that it is too expensive for daily wear. Zhousheng Chen just assured her that it’s not. (But netizens searched the price for such watches and the price-tag is exorbitant!) And then Zhousheng Chen took Shi Yi out for dinner as a way of celebrating her win.

After dinner, Zhousheng Chen sent Shi Yi back as usual.

Downstairs, Zhousheng Chen observed that Shi Yi took 38 minutes to shower this time. (We all have the same face like Lin-Shu has above!) Lin-Shu asked if the couples nowadays like to observe each other from a distance. Zhousheng Chen explained that he is trying to know Shi Yi’s habits so that it would help them in the future when they are going to live together. Lin-Shu saw through him and said that he just can’t bear to leave.

Upstairs, Hong Xiaoyu asked why a meteorite watch and Shi Yi thinks that it might be related to Zhousheng Chen’s job.

Zhousheng Chen arrived at a factory and needed to solve the polluted water issue at the factory. He asked for the polluted water reports and Old Mr. LIu went to find it. The factory workers then admitted to the pollution and Zhousheng Chen asked for everyone to start cleaning up at the expense of production being held up.
