This review may contain spoilers

Mixed feelings: the drama doesn’t come close to reach its full potential, but it’s not a bad watch

PORTRAYAL OF EATING DISORDERSI’m starting with this point because it could potentially be problematic to some viewers. The drama specifies right from the start that the FL suffers from anorexia, probably exacerbated by trauma. I have luckily no personal knowledge of this disorder, but even so I could recognize some issues with how the show depicted it.I can somewhat understand why the drama has the FL start eating with gusto once she has amnesia, since her not being able to remember her past and not having to deal with her stressful job could make her able to overcome the psychological barrier she had towards eating. It’s probably simplicistic, but fictionally it could make sense in my opinion. What I found less excusable is how the show doesn’t portray any of the physical issues a person suffering from anorexia might have once he/she starts eating normally. I was expecting her to show some discomfort or nausea, but nothing happens. The drama just has her going from basically only drinking juice to eating full meals (and more), as if her stomach wouldn’t somehow be overwhelmed by such a drastic change of diet.I was still able to enjoy the drama but, if this is a sensitive matter to you and you wouldn’t be able to ignore it, you might want to reconsider watching this.STORYThe plot isn’t amazing, but it has its good moments. To me the drama shined when set in the village with Chef Moon cooking, Bella being carefree and Seol Ah having fun with the rest of the villagers. On the contrary, the parts revolving the business power struggle and family secrets were both boring and exaggerated. Having these parts is something that I have grown accustomed to in Korean dramas, but here they got tedious quite fast.I would have preferred if the ‘big bad villain’ was set in ruining either just one of the two leads or maybe only the village, but he’s seemingly the root of all evil in the world.Having the same person being the catalyst of everyone’s misery felt like an unbelievable coincidence and reeked of contrivance. It was also more suited to a pure revenge makjang than a romance/healing melo and so I found it quite jarring, as if there were two different stories forced into one.ACTING AND CHARACTERSActing is good all around. The two leads are very likeable and the child actress playing Seul Ah (Go Do Yeon) is a delight to watch. She’s adorable and very natural on camera.Chef Moon and Designer Bella are pleasant characters; they both have their good and bad sides and interact well with each other even if they don’t have a particularly passionate chemistry together. Anyway, they make for a quite endearing couple that was easy to root for. With Eric Mun being 40 year old and Go Won Hee just 25, I thought the age difference would be very apparent, but that wasn’t the case and I could easily believe that they were only a couple years apart. I hadn’t watched anything either them previously starred in and I was very pleasantly surprised by both. They really managed to give life to their characters.I’d also like to point out (since this is usually a common fault of dramas set in rural villages) that the characters of villagers aren’t annoying as I was originally afraid of. They are obviously often used for comic relief, but it wasn’t overdone and the interaction among the various characters was to me one of the most enjoyable aspects of the drama.MUSICThe music really suited the atmosphere of the drama well. There were some instrumental pieces which I found really pleasing, but beside those I didn’t notice any particularly noteworthy song.REWATCHABILITYI do not exclude I might someday want to rewatch this show, but it’s unlikely it’ll happen soon. In that case anyway I’ll probably skip all the company business and evil plotting.OVERALLIn my opinion this drama had the potential to be something really good if the writers had put more importance on the healing aspect, by giving more space to the FL overcoming her eating disorder, the ML coming to terms with the tragic loss of his parents and Seul Ah finding her new family. As things are, I still found the drama enjoyable, but (with the exception of a quite compelling cast) it lacks any unique feature that could have made it stand out from the rest.

Eccentric! Chef Moon Review

Synopsis. Eccentric! Chef Moon is a 16-episode 2020 kdrama about a chef, a designer and a child that learn what is important in life, together. The designer suffers from amnesia and the child latches onto her coaxing the chef to take her in. The villagers embrace the three of them. The chef and designer search for answers to past events. Little do they know their pasts intertwine with the big bad villain. As events become clearer, the chef and designer must resolve their own issues. Will their past divide them? Can the big bad villain be defeated? Will their future walk the same path? This series was broadcast on Channel A, a cable channel in Seoul launched in 2011 along with 3 other cable channels – TV Chosun, jTBC, and MBN – all sponsored by daily newspapers.

What I liked.

It took a village to make this series work. Writers Kim Kyung Soo and Jung Yoo Ri imbued this series with heart, home, community and a tough villain. The main and secondary characters gelled – the core trio, the villagers, the corporate characters, the fashion arena characters, and the villain & his minions.

Core trio learned that family doesn’t need blood ties. Initially this family was thrown together but they found acceptance, caring, and fun from each other and the supporting villagers.

Chef Moon Seung Mo (Eric). I’ve been an Eric fan for years, he’s a member of my cadre of cuties (actors that I regularly watch). Though I didn’t love his hair, I enjoyed his performance. Chef Moon was a wanderer. When he returned to Korea he learned he had a daughter. When his parents died, he retreated to his parent’s retirement home in a small village. Here Chef Moon took in an amnesiac stranger and found love. By opening his home, and eventually his heart, he centered himself in family and community. He had his own past issues that had to be dealt with outside of the village.

Designer Yoo Yoo Jin (Go Won Hee). Designer Yoo was driven by work. An accident left her with amnesia. Chef Moon took her into his home and she was embraced by all. When her memory came back, things had to be dealt with outside of the village. Her extended family supported her as she fought to resolve past issues. Go Won Hee and Eric had chemistry. There were several standout moments between this couple. A favorite was when Chef Moon secretly made her food when Designer Yoo was taxing herself to meet a deadline. She immediately knew who cooked for her and made a beeline to the kitchen.

Daughter Seol A (Ko Do Yeon). Child characters can be tricky and potentially off-putting. Seol A had opinions and charm which she used deftly. I liked this kid. She engaged every character she came in contact with. Ko Do Yeon held her own with the adult cast.

What I didn’t like.

Latter third dominated by the villain. Ahn Nae Sang’s portrayal of the villain willing to crush anyone in his way was rock solid. He culled the herd of opponents and the body count climbed. He had always had a plan B. He effectively neutralized team good individually with direct threats causing the character to capitulate to “save” others. That never worked. The latter third of the series focused on defeating the villain, which wasn’t an easy task.

Would I recommend Eccentric! Chef Moon? Yes, this series had a sweet vibe, touching moments with the touchstone that community, family, and love is what matters. This was threatened by a difficult to defeat villain ready to destroy those in his path. The writers’ story had a foundation of humanity brought to life by the ensemble cast. The trio of Chef Moon, Designer Yoo, and daughter Seol A were the heart of this series. The core actors’ chemistry was undeniable. This good but not great series engaged me and left me smiling.

OST. This drama’s OST had 12 vocal tracks and 26 instrumental tracks. Dramawiki has the OST details (link). My favorite song was Love Came sung by Colde.

KDrama Review : Eccentric! Chef Moon

Title : Eccentric! Chef Moon, Yoobyeolna! Chef Moon, Spoiled Vacation

Episodes : 16

Genre : Family, Drama, Food, Comedy, Romance, Business, Melodrama

Story : 6 out of 10

Characters : 7 out of 10

Cinematography : 8 out of 10

Eccentric! Chef Moon was not something original, but it had a heartwarming story.

Story

Seung Mo is a renowned chef who moves back to South Korea after his parents’ death. He starts living in their old house at a small village along with his friend and a little girl who claims to be his daughter.

And, on top of that, he takes in a woman who has amnesia and just appeared in the woods one day. That woman is, in reality, Bella, a famous designer who hates the celebrity life and has been hiding her face since the start of her career.

Bella was in a car accident and that’s how she ended up at Seung Mo’s village, helpless and with a big appetite. The three of them will eventually become a big family, along with the friendly villagers, but the secrets of their families will force them to face reality soon.

Eccentric! Chef Moon had a story that can pretty much be found in many other Korean dramas.

There was the evil businessman who, somehow, was involved in everything and in everyone’s lives, the hate to love couple, an adorable kid, quirky villagers that provided comic relief and a mystery of the past that is just being discovered.

Still, the drama was enjoyable. Sure, it was predictable and it isn’t something original, plus the couple didn’t have much chemistry, but there was a feel-good atmosphere around it, with the rural life, the food, and the little girl who was hands down a fuzzball.

Characters

Seung Mo is a famous chef who has tragically lost both his parents in a fire that burned down their restaurant.

He is still trying to process their loss, while figuring out who the mysterious little girl that claims to be his daughter is, when he has to take in a mysterious woman with amnesia.

Soon, he will find that the village and his new family will heal him and provide him the comfort that he couldn’t find in the big international kitchens.

Eric Mun‘s come back, after the hit Korean drama “Another Miss Oh”, and he proves that he still got it.

Yoo Jin is worldwide known as Bella, the mysterious designer of a big brand who is hiding from the spotlight. Her tragic past and hectic lifestyle prevent her from living a healthy life and she often blacks out from starvation.

However, after an accident that leaves her with no memory of who she is, she starts living again.

Go Won Hee‘s character was a bit annoying when she still had amnesia, but she did a great job with Bella, the strong female lead who could risk everything for what she believed in.

Catch up with Go Won Hee in her other dramas Per fume and Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency.

Hyun Ah is the daughter of a rich but ruthless businessman. She is dreaming of becoming a designer just like Bella, however, she can’t find her own voice in her designs and she ends up following others’ inspirations.

When she is called out by Bella for not being original, she panics and they both end up in a car accident. After that, she takes Bella’s place in her clothing line, with her father’s help.

Cha Jung Won was pretty good, especially when it came to those dramatic scenes.

Cinematography

The drama had a pretty basic cinematography, but they handled the food scenes masterfully.

Overall

My overall rating for the Korean Drama Eccentric! Chef Moon is 6.5 out of 10. The drama wasn’t original, but it was enjoyable.

Eccentric! Chef Moon Full Review

Im Hyuna is the daughter of Im Chul Yong. She is obsessed with Bella and idolizes her. I get that , but the character just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Her obsession is pathological. So, is she certifiably crazy? And if so, how did she end up so twisted? More importantly, how does she just turn it off toward the end of the drama and become totally lucid and sane. Is she crazy in the same way Yoo Jin is anorexic? It just goes away all by itself. I don’t really know, but I couldn’t really make much sense out of her motivation and true mental stability. The character just didn’t really work for me.
