‘Gangnam Style’ singer Psy criticized for requiring 300 tons of water for each of his upcoming summer concerts amid South Korea’s drought

Psy’s famously water-drenched concerts are set to return, with each show needing 300 tons of water.

K-pop superstar Psy has been criticized for requiring 300 tons of water at each of his upcoming summer concerts amid a drought in South Korea.

Last Friday, the “Gangnam Style” singer announced on Instagram that his popular water-soaked “Summer Swag” shows are set to return to Seoul in August. The concert series marks the first time since 2019 that the artist is putting on his “Psy Drenched Show” โ€” its name in Korean โ€” at which audiences sing and dance while getting sprayed with water.

The concert series, a hit with crowds in South Korea’s summer heat, has been held every few years since 2011, per Korea JoongAng Daily.

A post shared by PSY (@42psy42)

This year, concert promoters are touting the show using slogans such as “so much water that it will make you wonder if we scooped up the Han River,” the outlet reported, referring to the fourth largest river along the Korean peninsula.

The announcement of the show’s return has received flak on social media amid concerns that he is wasting precious resources when South Korea is facing its spring drought. According to the outlet, the country is short on water for agricultural and industrial use.

Last week, Yonhap news agency shared a picture of a dried-up stream in Sejong city caused by the long drought.

“That’s horrible. It’s like the Marie Antoinette ‘let them eat cake..’ thing. If a drought has been declared in any part of the world, nobody should be using up that much water,” one person tweeted.

“It’s not a cool thing to amuse your audience anymore,” another person tweeted.

During an appearance on a local radio show in May, Psy claimed that his water-soaked concerts use only drinkable water, per Korea JoongAng Daily.

“We spend a lot to buy all that water. Each concert requires about 300 tons. We use the performance venue’s water supplies as well as sprinkler trucks,” he said, per the outlet.

Something in the Water festival packs them in (and leaves a few out)

Listen 8 min Comment on this story Comment Gift Article Share

To say that a lot has happened in the world since the first Something in the Water festival in Virginia in 2019 is an understatement. Protests over racial justice, a contentious presidential election that ended in an insurrection, horrific gun violence โ€” all in the midst of a pandemic that has taken the lives of more than 1 million Americans.

Indeed, when rapper Lil Uzi Vert performed his hit โ€œXO Tour Llif3โ€ at the festival Saturday in downtown Washington, his spiked hair poking against the Capitol dome backdrop, the songโ€™s refrain โ€” โ€œall my friends are deadโ€ โ€” hit a bit differently.

Festival creator Pharrell Williams opened his Saturday-night set with โ€œFreedom,โ€ an appropriate tune for a holiday weekend that marks the end of slavery in Texas.

โ€œLook at our people,โ€ Williams told The Washington Post on Sunday morning, recalling the thoughts going through his mind as he took the stage Saturday. โ€œListen to our people and feel our people while we are giving reverence to this amazing holiday.โ€ The award-winning producer then tore through more than 20 years of hits, sometimes nodding along to his many beats as if it were an intimate listening session. At other times, he got help from friends such as N.O.R.E., Justin Timberlake, T.I. and Clipse, who reunited after about a decade off.

โ€œMusic has always been one of the most amazing couriers for a much-needed message and to break down the walls into partitions,โ€ Williams said. โ€œ[Saturday] night debunked and dispelled a lot of stereotypes. There were no fights or violence. It was just love.โ€

But the night was not without its hiccups. Several festival attendees took to Twitter to complain about being squeezed on the narrow street or not being let back in because of safety concerns regarding the size of the crowd. Those not allowed back will receive refunds, Williams said. โ€œThere are a lot of kinks to work out,โ€ he said.

On social networks and at the scene, however, it seemed as if most people were having a good time. Kevin Thaxton, 47, said he was glad that coronavirus restrictions have abated enough, โ€œso we can do things like this in the city.โ€

Thaxton, a D.C. native, had just finished listening to hometown favorite Backyard Band delight the audience Saturday afternoon with a bevy of crowd-pleasers, including their cover of Adeleโ€™s โ€œHello.โ€ But the celebratory nature of the weekend couldnโ€™t stop the real world from creeping in.

โ€œPut them guns down and stop killing each other,โ€ Anwan Glover, the bandโ€™s co-founder, pleaded to the audience. The brother of the go-go legend turned actor was gunned down in D.C. 15 years ago.

Glover wasnโ€™t the only one taking the moment between sets to get a message across.

โ€œMake some f—ing noise for the ancestors one time,โ€ said the rapper JID before launching into โ€œSkegee,โ€ a song he released during Black History Month in 2021. โ€œI donโ€™t care if you want to hear it.โ€

At most music festivals, thereโ€™s a mad rush for the front row, but on Friday, Something in the Water concertgoers craved the shade. They huddled on the pavement, stretched their legs and nodded their heads to the music. It was hot โ€” scorching, with temperatures in the high 90s โ€” and no amount of free water faucets or cheery sunscreen reminders could take that away. The weather on Saturday and Sunday came like a miraculous reversal: breezy with temps in the high 70s.

More than 70 musical acts โ€” including Usher, Pusha T and the Dave Matthews Band โ€” and an estimated 50,000 or more attendees descended on six blocks of Independence Avenue SW.

The highly melanated event took place on Juneteenth weekend, a time usually celebrated by free events and inclusive gatherings for D.C.โ€™s Black community. The price tag, however, was hardly accessible. Three-day tickets started at almost $350 ($299 without fees) and quickly sold out. The $50 discounts offered to D.C. and Virginia residents were available for only one day in April.

Those who snagged the coveted wristbands justified the hit to their wallets.

โ€œLast time, he brought out Jay-Z, and I didnโ€™t pay for Jay-Z,โ€ said Xavier Jackson, 28, on Friday, referring to the previous Something in the Water festival he attended. โ€œItโ€™s worth it.โ€

โ€œWhen I put in my time-off request, I said it was to celebrate my Blackness,โ€ said Jackson, an Apple employee, as he stood in a long merchandise line. โ€œThatโ€™s what this is.โ€

On Saturday afternoon, groups of 20-somethings in multicolored bucket hats, Bohemian pants and jumpsuits jogged to each stage to snag a decent spot. Until the crowding increased, every angle was perfect, and no matter where people stood in the crowd, the beats vibrated through them.

During the set by Yvngxchris, a native of Chesapeake, Va., a fan threw futuristic sunglasses onstage for the artist to wear. They didnโ€™t stay on long. Neither did his pants during his second-to-last song, revealing his turquoise paisley boxer briefs.

The cluster of people dancing in front of him werenโ€™t fazed. They continued jumping, their box braids and Afros bouncing to the beat as they filmed on their phones.

โ€œThat was the last song, but yโ€™all want more?โ€ Yvngxchris asked.

โ€œYeah!โ€ the crowd yelled.

This was the first time the festival was held in the nationโ€™s capital. Something in the Water was previously staged in Virginia Beach, Williamsโ€™s hometown. The name is a nod to the cluster of musical talent from the area, such as Missy Elliott, who performed at the 2019 festival, and Pusha T, who performed this weekend.

Williams moved this yearโ€™s festival a few months after Virginia Beach police killed his cousin, Donovon Lynch, in March 2021. Following the shooting, Williams proposed that the city hold a forum to โ€œtalk about your issues, talk about your struggles.โ€ But, according to Williams, they never did. Six months later, Williams said the cityโ€™s โ€œtoxic energyโ€ couldnโ€™t be home to the festival. D.C. was chosen instead.

โ€œUltimately, the goal is for Virginia Beach to realize that they messed up and that they could have just addressed the situation if they wanted to, and they didnโ€™t,โ€ said Jackson, a Virginia Beach native. โ€œI think it makes total sense, what Pharrell did.โ€

Kristopher Lee, 17, and his mother, Karen Lee, 64, attended the concert together and stood far from the stage โ€” not in the shade, because those spots were taken โ€” as Lakeyah rapped Friday.

โ€œIโ€™ve been wanting to go to this festival since it was at Virginia Beach. Heโ€™s here to keep me company,โ€ Karen said as she gestured to her son, whose tall, lean stature bears a strong resemblance to Pharrellโ€™s, although thatโ€™s just a coincidence.

The move from Virginia Beach wasnโ€™t the only thing that loomed over the festival; some were concerned about their safety after recent mass shootings. Before it began, festival organizers said 800 to 850 guards would be working on the grounds during the day, and another 100 patrolling at night.

College students Leila and Nalani Butler and Jenai Roberson chose two meeting spots: one in case of a minor emergency, such as losing each other in the crowd, and another in the case of something bigger, such as gunfire.

โ€œIโ€™m a little more nervous now that it was so easy to get in,โ€ said Roberson, 19. โ€œWe got here early and walked through an open gate. They asked if we had wristbands, and that was it.โ€

โ€œI think weโ€™re just trying our best to be safe,โ€ said Nalani, 20. โ€œAll we can do is at least try to plan and savor the good.โ€

Will the festival be back in D.C. next year?

โ€œThereโ€™s conversations,โ€ Williams told The Post on Sunday. โ€œIt would be different. Itโ€™s got to be different.

โ€œWe need a much bigger street.โ€

7 Big Takeaways From Something in the Water Festival 2022

Pharrellโ€™s Something in the Water festival took place this past weekend in Washington, DC. For three days, 70 of musicโ€™s biggest acts descended upon DCโ€™s National Mall for performances in front of over 50,000 attendees. Pharrell moved the show to DC from his native Virginia after the police killing of his cousin Donovan Lynch. He told USA Today, โ€œWhy not take this Black solution to a systemic issue to a higher platform? Why not take Virginia with me to D.C. so we can take our message of unity, diversity and equity to our nationโ€™s capital?โ€

It was the festivalโ€™s first year on DCโ€™s Independence Avenue, which means there are some kinks to work out for the future, but it was still an enjoyable time. Here are some of our biggest takeaways from the weekend.

Floating Concert: Schubert on the Water โ€“ Moab Music Festival

An open air river boat takes patrons several miles up the Colorado River to a spectacular concert location literally on the river. Surrounded by towering canyon walls, patrons stay aboard to see Festival Artists perform the outdoor concert against a red rock backdrop. An early return allows for a relaxed evening following this magical experience.

Concert Description: Franz Schubert wrote dozens of songs specifically about rivers. We hear the promise of fresh fish, life-giving water, recreation, and beautiful respite from everyday drudgery through his musical lens. This Floating Concert, which includes the โ€œTroutโ€ Quintet, puts audiences on the Colorado River, the perfect setting to reflect on the promise of survival and romance that harkens back to the 19th-century admiration of the life-giving waterways. Itโ€™s a reverence we share in the drought-stricken Southwest.

MADISON, Wis. โ€” Live music returns to the Memorial Union Terrace next month, with a unique twist.

Outdoor UW, Wisconsin Union Directorate Music Committee and Hoofer Outing Club are turning the stage around to face concert-goers floating on Lake Mendota for the first-ever Lakefront Live on July 14.

Indie-pop band Sleeping Jesus will be performing starting at 6 p.m. and the concert is free.

Audience members can still enjoy the concert from the comfort of the Terraceโ€™s iconic sunburst chairs, but kayaks, paddleboards and canoes are available for rent.

A $15 reservation secures a spot on an Outdoor UW paddlecraft for the entire concert, and renters can arrive starting at 3 p.m. Hoofer Outing Club will also have free canoe rentals for those 18 and older on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 5:30 p.m. Drugs and alcohol are not permitted on the watercraft. You can reserve your spot here.

Those with their own watercraft are also allowed to paddle over for the concert.

If there is a blue-green algae bloom on the day of the event, the stage will be turned toward the Terrace and water outings will be canceled. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved inside Memorial Union at der Rathskeller.
