Green Day & the ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends’ Memes

Green Day, the ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends’ Social Media Jokes and Billie Joe Armstrong’s Reaction

Thanks to social media’s prevalence in our lives, certain things achieve “meme” status that otherwise wouldn’t. One of the most notable among online music communities happens every year around the start of September and involves the band Green Day.

You might know where this is going, depending on your level of awareness of social media trends and the like. In 2004, Green Day released an album called American Idiot. It would largely reinvent the band on a global scale, turning the alt/punk pioneers into a stadium act, its concept album resonating around the world and making Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt an even bigger deal than they already were.

One of the album’s singles was “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” and the song’s success elevated it to the meme it is today … mostly leading the band to trend on Twitter as people make jokes about its title. It’s a bit of a yearly tradition now.

Once September comes to an end, posts like this show up:

September 28th. Almost time to wake the guy from Green Day up. — jed #KanyePropagandaAccount #MegumiStanAccount (@jed1mutuc) September 28, 2016

Billie Joe Armstrong has actually addressed this online phenomenon, and … he thinks it’s a bit played out.

“It’s like when Jesus was born on December 25, people go, ‘Hey it’s Christmas time’. When the Easter Bunny comes, people go ‘Hey it’s Easter’,” he told Vulture. “When September comes, people go ‘Hey it’s that guy in Green Day’.

“When September comes, people go ‘Hey it’s that guy in Green Day’. I want to say have fun, but get a life at the same time.”

A subdued song, at least by Green Day’s standards and the theatrics that characterize the American Idiot album, the actual inspiration behind “Wake Me Up When September Ends” is a bit more serious than the memes and jokes might make you believe: it was inspired by the death of Billie Joe Armstrong’s father, who died of cancer when the singer/guitarist was just ten years old.

Its music video depicts a couple being broken up by the Iraq War, which differs from its actual inspiration, Armstrong told MTV the weight of the video’s themes felt appropriate:

“The main emotion in the song is that sense of loss, and that’s what Sam went with in the video, two people very close to each other being disconnected by natural causes,” he said.

With all of this in mind, Armstrong’s seeming rejection of the memes makes sense, doesn’t it?

Green Day Fans: ‘September’ Memes Aren’t a Joking Matter

Well, it’s September, which means Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends” will likely get a lot of play in the social media universe. But Green Day fans are reminding people who are posting jokes exactly why doing so may be bad form.

While the title may lend itself to some humorous ideas for memes, singer Billie Joe Armstrong revealed during a Howard Stern Show appearance in 2019 that the actual inspiration for the song is a rather sad and personal one for him. The title comes from a phrase he told his mother upon learning of his father’s death. Andrew Armstrong, Billie Joe’s father, died when Billie Joe was just 10 from esophageal cancer.

“I think it’s something that just stayed with me; the month of September being that anniversary that always is just, I don’t know, kind of a bummer,” he said. “But it’s weird. When things happen like that when you’re that young, it’s almost like life starts at year zero, or something like that.” The singer admitted that it was hard to him to write about his father for years, but the song felt like a breakthrough and a way to honor him.

The song itself is about a loss of innocence, something that the video portrayed in a different way while not directly addressing Armstrong’s father.

Green Day, “Wake Me Up When September Ends”

As Sept. 1 arrived, a number of Green Day fans posted about why jokes centered around the song title weren’t really “cool.”

Armstrong, seemingly aware of the attention placed on “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” has repurposed a bit of the message in a new Instagram post, turning it into a rallying cry to “Wake Up and Register to Vote.” See his posting, which includes his endorsement of the Joe Biden / Kamala Harris ticket in November.

Wake Me Up When September Ends

Spread

“Wake up Billie Joe” jokes began the first September after the song was released as a single. For example, one of the joke’s earliest known uses occurred in a blogpost on mikezeller.blogspot.com, when Zeller posted “wake up billie joe…” on September 30th, 2005 (shown below).

The joke didn’t begin gaining widespread popularity until the 2010s, however. A thread on the music website Drowned in Sound posted by Lucien on October 1st, 2010, asked if anyone had remembered to “wake up Billie Joe.” A similar thread was posted to IGN on October 1st, 2011. Since then, the joke has regularly appeared around social media and news publications. Image macros began appearing as early as 2010. An e-card was posted in 2012 and has gained 4.6 thousand shares in four years. The meme was soon applied to Advice Animals including Good Guy Greg (below, left), Slowpoke (below, center), and Overly Attached Girlfriend (below, right).

Green Day fans remind the internet why September memes aren’t funny

It’s Sept. 1 which means people are rolling out the September memes and jokes that reference Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends.”

However, Green Day fans are reminding the internet about what the song truly means and are asking that the September memes stop for good.

Now, since September 2020 is here, Green Day began trending on Twitter because of the September memes. However, fans are reminding everyone about why the memes aren’t actually funny.

For those that don’t know, “Wake Me Up When September Ends” is about the death of Armstrong’s father. Armstrong recently told Howard Stern that the song title comes directly from the words he, then a young kid, told his mother when his father died.

“I think it’s something that just stayed with me; the month of September being that anniversary that always is just, I don’t know, kind of a bummer,” he said “But it’s weird. When things happen like that when you’re that young, it’s almost like life starts at year zero, or something like that.”

In the interview, Stern asked Armstrong if he ever thinks about his father when performing or hearing “Wake Me Up When September Ends.”

“I mean, yeah. I think about him every day,” Armstrong continued. “I kind of avoided writing about him for many years and then finally having a breakthrough. It felt good. It wasn’t a negative emotion so much, but just honoring him.”

As well, back in 2018, Armstrong was asked about the September memes in an interview. More specifically, he shared his thoughts on those that send him the same meme every single year.

“I don’t know. Have fun [and] get a life at the same time,” he said.

He also said he might write a song called “Shut The Fuck Up When October Comes” in response to the flood of comments he receives on Oct. 1.

Given the personal and emotional nature of the song, Green Day fans aren’t too happy that the September memes still continue to come back each year. Now, they are reminding the internet that the song isn’t really something to joke about.

UPDATE: OCTOBER 1, 2020, 10:17 A.M. ET

Every year, Green Day becomes the focus of a meme as September rolls around. Shared heavily on the first day of the month, social media leans in on using the American Idiot lyrics as a joke.

Like clockwork, as the month comes to a close, the meme resurfaces on the first day of October to ask if anyone woke the band up. This year, the band’s name started trending on Twitter as a result.

Billie Joe Armstrong even jumped in on it this year, sharing a Family Guy-inspired meme on Instagram.

However, just like Sept. 1, Green Day fans are reminding the internet why the jokes aren’t funny.

In general, the internet was pretty self-aware of the situation, even making memes about not making memes.

Green Day fans remind the internet not to post Wake Me Up…

Green Day are currently trending on Twitter as it’s September 1, and the annual Wake Me Up When September Ends comments have begun…

But while plenty of the 12,000-plus tweets are making throwaway ‘jokes’ and memes about the emotional American Idiot single – which was written about Billie Joe Armstrong’s father Andrew, who passed away when the frontman was 10 years old – there are plenty of fans reminding people that it’s not a laughing matter.

“Did it hurt? when nobody thought your yearly green day tweet was funny?” asks Emma Blackery, while rinnie writes: “with all due respect i will throw up on anyone making “wake me up when september ends” memes again. it is disrespectful. it’s not a song about wanting to be lazy all september, armstrong wrote it for his dad who died in september when he was just 10.”

In a 2016 interview with Vulture, Billie Joe responded to the September memes by saying, “Have fun, get a life at the same time…”
