The AISI designation is Type 630 and the UNS designation for the chemical composition of this alloy is UNS S17400.
Capable of high strength and toughness after heat treatment and with the corrosion and oxidation resistance typical of stainless steels, 17-4 is one of the most common and commercially important of the PH stainless alloys. It finds applications in a wide range of industries from aircraft and aerospace to chemical and petrochemical.
For aerospace applications, the alloy is aircraft quality where the cleanliness requirements of AMS 2301 are applicable or premium aircraft quality Consumable Electrode Melted (CEM) to AMS 2300.
For petrochemical sour gas applications, the double H1150 condition has NACE approval for sour gas service
As in all of the precipitation hardening stainless grades, it receives a solution anneal that is followed by an aging treatment to develop final properties.
Typical solution anneal is at 1900° F and then rapidly cooled to room temperature.
Aging temperatures are specified by the condition description:
The H900 condition is aged at 900°F, H1100 is aged at 1100°F, etc.
Aging requires one hour at temperature for H900 and 4 hours when aged to other conditions.. Cooling rate after aging is an air cool. The double H1150 condition is two 1150° four hour aging treatments.

Grade 301 is a 17% Chromium / 7% Nickel austenitic stainless steel. It is supplied in a range of different conditions/tempers depending on the level of strength required. It has good resistance to atmosphere corrosion and its bright attractive surface make it an excellent choice for decorative structural applications.
Resistance to Corrosion & Oxidation
Grade 301 has good resistance to oxidation at temperatures up to 1550°F, but is not recommend for use above 1600°F. 301 is resistance to a variety of corrosive media. However, it’s corrosion resistance properties are not as good as the 18-8 chromium-nickel steels and its susceptibility to carbide precipitation during welding restricts its use in many applications in favour of 304/304L alloy. The mechanical properties for the different tempers of 301 are obtained by cold working and not by heat treating. 301 1/4 Hard (AMS 5517) material has a miniumum tensile strength of 125ksi and is used in the fabrication of parts that require moderate drawing or forming.

Type 301 is an austenitic stainless steel capable of attaining high strengths and ductility by cold working.
It is not hardenable by heat treatment. Type 301 is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and becomes increasingly magnetic with cold working. It is preferable over types 302 and 304 in the tempered condition because the higher elongations (which are attainable at a given strength level) facilitate fabrication.
