Cho was born on 14 February 1936, in Ulju-gun, now part of Ulsan metropolitan city. The son of Cho Doo-chun and Kim Bok-sun, Cho was the eldest of five brothers and four sisters.
He graduated from middle school with honours. Because his father’s sock and glove business went bankrupt, he could not afford high school or university tuition.

Subsequently, he enrolled in an inexpensive technical high school to learn a trade. At the same time, he began frequenting an American army base near his school, and learned English from soldiers whom he befriended.
He mastered English quickly, and became an interpreter for the commander of the army base, and also for the principal of his school.

Sensing God calling him to the ministry, Cho began working as an interpreter for the American evangelist Ken Tize.
In 1956, he received a scholarship to study theology at Full Gospel Bible College in Seoul. While there, he met Choi Ja-shil, who became his mother-in-law and a close ministerial associate. He graduated in March 1958.

Margaret Cho was born Margaret Moran Cho on December 5, 1968, in San Francisco, California. Her parents, Seung-Hoon and Young-Hie, moved to the U.S. from Seoul, Korea, in 1964, and Margaret’s father was deported a few days after her birth because he hadn’t obtained a work permit. He later returned to San Francisco and ran the Paperback Traffic bookstore with his wife and wrote joke books. The family lived in a neighborhood full of “old hippies, ex-druggies, burn-outs from the 1960s, drag queens, Chinese people, and Koreans” near Ocean Beach. Cho was bullied in school, and in a 2010 interview with “People” magazine, she stated “When I was a teenager, I was bullied a lot, and I felt very insecure and very scared, and I didn’t want to live.”
Margaret was molested by a friend of the family from the ages of 5 to 12, and when she was raped by an acquaintance in high school, her classmates bullied her instead of showing compassion, telling her “You are disgusting, and you deserve to be raped.” Cho was expelled from Lowell High School for skipping class and getting bad grades during her freshman and sophomore years, then she attended J Eugene McAteer High School but dropped out during her senior year. She then attended the San Francisco School of the Arts and joined the school’s improv group, which also included future stars Aisha Tyler and Sam Rockwell. After graduation, Margaret enrolled at San Francisco State University to study drama, but she left before earning her diploma. David Yonggi Cho: Money, sex, power and the perils of church leadership It doesn’t look like good news for the gospel when the senior pastor of one of the world’s largest Christian congregations is convicted of corruption. As this website has reported, David Yonggi Cho, founder of the million-strong Yoido Full Gospel Church in Seoul, South Korea, has been found guilty of embezzling $12 million in church funds. He was sentenced to three years in prison – suspended for five years – and ordered to pay $4.67 million in fines. As a report by the Gospel Herald put it, the news “spread like wildfire among global Christian communities, where followers of the disgraced South Korean mega-church pastor searched for an explanation of how their spiritual leader became entangled in the crime”. Perhaps, however, we should not be so surprised. Christian leaders are no more immune from temptation than anyone else – and it is often money, sex or power which trips them up. Yet the New Testament sets a high standard for those who aspire to have oversight of congregations, declaring that they “must be blameless – not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, and not pursuing dishonest gain,” as Paul puts it in his Epistle to Titus. Rather, they must be “hospitable, love what is good… [and] self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined”. (Titus 1v7-8) Nonetheless, Paul himself was the first to admit that sin was an ongoing struggle for him: “I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out,” he laments in Romans 7. “For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.” Although some have argued he was speaking about his experience before becoming a Christian, the majority of Bible scholars – from Augustine through to the Reformation and beyond – agree that he was writing about his ongoing post-conversion struggle against sin. More recently, when Pope Francis was asked to define himself, he replied: “I am a sinner. This is the most accurate definition. It is not a figure of speech, a literary genre. I am a sinner.” Church leaders are not expected to be perfect – but they are expected to be living in daily repentance and faith. The problem for them comes when the daily battle against sin is abandoned, when it remains unconfessed to God, and when sin makes it impossible for them to discharge the duties of their ministry or brings the gospel into public disgrace. In the case of David Yonggi Cho, one of his church elders has said: “Over the past 14 years, I have met with Rev Cho many times to try to persuade him to repent and return to being a great pastor, but the corruption has continued. That’s why I had no choice but to disclose it to the outside world.” Sometimes, on the other hand, ministers are brought down by untrue accusations – or the misdeeds of others. Again, Paul wrote of experiencing “glory and dishonour, bad report and good report” and of his mission team being “genuine, yet regarded as impostors,” (2 Corinthians 6v7-9). In Cho’s case, one American minister and friend, Bob Rodgers, has suggested his downfall was at least in part due to naïvety in signing financial papers prepared by others without reading them properly. Cho was born on 14 February 1936, in Ulju-gun, now part of Ulsan metropolitan city.[2] The son of Cho Doo-chun and Kim Bok-sun, Cho was the eldest of five brothers and four sisters. He graduated from middle school with honours. Because his father’s sock and glove business went bankrupt, he could not afford high school or university tuition. Subsequently, he enrolled in an inexpensive technical high school to learn a trade. At the same time, he began frequenting an American army base near his school, and learned English from soldiers whom he befriended. He mastered English quickly, and became an interpreter for the commander of the army base, and also for the principal of his school.
Raised initially as a Buddhist,[3] Cho converted to Christianity at the age of 17, after a beautiful girl visited him telling him about Jesus Christ, before he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Sensing God calling him to the ministry, Cho began working as an interpreter for the American evangelist Ken Tize. In 1956, he received a scholarship to study theology at Full Gospel Bible College in Seoul. While there, he met Choi Ja-shil, who became his mother-in-law and a close ministerial associate. He graduated in March 1958.

Controversies [ edit ]
In March 2011, Cho became a subject of controversy when he reportedly made comments suggesting that the 2011 Tōhoku tsunami “could be a warning from God to Japan, which has become an increasingly materialistic, secular and idol-worshiping country.” However, as the context of the interview was distorted, a text of apology was announced by The News Mission.[6]
In September 2011, 29 church elders out of 1,500 filed a lawsuit by South Korean prosecutors. The prosecutors began an investigation of Cho’s alleged embezzlement of 23 billion won ($20 million USD) from the Yoido Full Gospel Church’s funds. A national broadcaster, MBC, released a documentary that claimed the money had been used to buy properties for Bethesda University in Anaheim, California, United States, which Cho founded.[7]
In 2014, Cho was convicted of embezzling $12 million USD in church funds that he bought from his son Cho Jong-Un.[8]
