Woo Jeong Hills was opened in 1993 and is as close as you can find in Asia to a big, brutish, US tournament course. From the start, the club entertained ambitions to host the national championship and this honour was granted in 2003. Two American’s won the first two Korean Opens to be held here: John Daly and Edward Loar who pipped Ernie Els by four shots. In the bad weather that dogged the championship in 2004, Loar was the only player to finish under par. Rickie Fowler became the third American to win the Korea Open here in 2011, claiming his first professional title. Perry Dye is the son of Pete Dye and of Alice Dye. The family is most famous for designing the Stadium Course at the Tournament Player’s Club at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Son Perry has carted the family imprint to Woo Jeong Hills where it appears at the 13th. Splash! is a manageable 150 yards from the blue tees but a wholesome 212 yards from the black tees. Played from here into a breeze and a splash is the most likely outcome. It proved to be Els’ undoing at the 2004 Korean Open. He scored 5 here and with it his challenge fizzled. In North Asia where business golf has long been the pre-eminent version of the game, most courses are built around the average skill level. For men this means a handicap of about 24 shots (the current world average for male golfers). Wee Jeong Hills is a little bit more difficult than most courses you are likely to play. Woo Jeong Hills hosted its 15th Korea Open in June 2017 (the event’s 60th anniversary). To mark the milestone, the tournament winner (Chang Yi-keun) and runner-up (Kim Gi-whan) both received exemptions into the 146th Open at Royal Birkdale when Jordan Spieth lifted the Claret Jug. The event is also part of the 2018 Open Qualifying Series for The 147th Open at Carnoustie.

Woo Jeong Hills Golf Club
Around a hundred kilometers from Seoul, the Woo Jeong Hills golf course was designed by Perry Dye, the son of legendary architect Pete Dye who created the famous Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass in Florida. This track is every bit the poor-man’s TPC course, with Dye junior paying homage to his Dad’s work and leaving Korean golfers big mounds, plenty of water, heroic design and even an island-green par three.
The problem with Woo Jeong Hills is that nothing here is original or particularly well built, it’s not a bad course but the mounding is overdone, the shaping not near the level of sophistication seen on Dye senior courses and some of the replica holes are just silly. An example is the 13th, an island-green par three that was initially modeled on Pete Dye’s most famous short hole. Unfortunately, the club chairman felt the hole was too short so it was extended to around 200 yards, the green enlarged and sand built around the edges. What was supposed to be a copy of the gripping short-iron 17th at Sawgrass is now a long, dull fairway wood into a large, flat green with sand protecting balls from the water.
There are a number of other areas here with double hazards, usually fairway bunkers along the edge of lakes or ravines to prevent stray balls from ending in deeper trouble. Throw in poor holes like the 2nd, with a lake left but a fairway shaped to favor the right side, and you have a course with potential but serious design shortcomings.
On the positive side, the long par three 7th is a good hole and the Sawgrass style 18th around a lake is an exciting climax to the round. There are also excellent teaching facilities here and a nice clubhouse. In Korea golfers rarely look for more in a club.

Woo Jeong Hills CC is a hillside course. All par 3s are superb and demanding. Undulating fairways, waters hazards and deep bunkers protect greens. Add to that island green, all of which are peculiar to Dye’s design, are adapted here. It hosted Korean Open in 2004. A grass clad, natural amphitheatre is made around the 18th green and its slope can accommodate many people without requiring the construction of spectator stands.
2nd Par 4 416 yards
An almost straight hole. The left side of the green faces water, so an accurate second shot is needed.
7th Par 3 216 yards
A relatively long par 3 over water. A bunker protecting the front of the green is very deep.
8th Par 5 538 yards
A dogleg to the left. A downhill tee shot is followed by uphill second & third shots. The fairway off the tee is narrow with water on the left and an OB on the right.
9th Par 4 440 yards
A slight dogleg to the left, gently uphill hole. The green is elevated, requiring a high ball. A bunker guarding the left side of the green should be avoided as it is about 7 meters (25 ft.) deep.
10th Par 4 426 yards
A slight dogleg to the left. There are water on the left and thick rough on the right off the tee. The fairway is tight requiring an accurate tee shot. A bunker protecting the front left of the green is as deep as 5 meters.
12th Par 4 347 yards
An uphill, short par 4. Various bunkers come into play off the tee, so the club selection not reaching the bunkers is important. The second shot is steeply uphill.
13th Par 3 221 yards
A par 3 with an island green. The tee shot is gently downhill. The green is high in the middle and slopes to the back. Personally speaking, I don’t like island greens as I feel they are too artificial. However this hole was an exception because it was challenging as well as very beautiful, so I enjoyed playing it.
16th Par 3 226 yards
A demanding par 3. Deep bunkers on the right and mounds on the left make this long par 3 difficult.
18th Par 5 561 yards
A Par 5 that starts straight first and then doglegs to the left 100 yards in front of the green. A bunker on the left comes into play off the tee. The landing area of the second shot is squeezed by water and a bunker on the left and slopes and bunkers on the right. A bunker protecting the front side of the green should be avoided on the approach shot as it is deep.
