What DAW Does Charlie Puth Use?

With social media being prevalent, artists and their fans are now closer than ever. This relationship pushes fans to get inspired with the hopes of reaching the same heights as their favorite singers.

Taking artist Charlie Puth as an example, he’s very close with his fans, releasing videos of what equipment he uses, and the methods he follows to make his songs.

Puth is definitely talented and can write, record, and produce his music, which he does thanks to something called a DAW.

This DAW isn’t something that’s restricted to him, as normal people can get it if they want to try their luck at producing their own music.

But before we say which DAW he uses, let’s first explain what a DAW is.

What Is a DAW?

DAW is a term that means “Digital Audio Workstation”, and from its name, you can get a hint of what it does.

it’s a piece of software that people can purchase and download on their PCs and Macs.

People use this program to record their voice or instruments, edit audio files, then mix, master, and produce them to get a final product.

DAWs are used in any industry that has audio in it. This can be in the form of soundtracks in movies, podcasts, radio shows, and music.

There’s a wide variety of DAWs to choose from and you aren’t restricted to using a certain one.

What DAW Does Charlie Puth Use?

Charlie Puth has changed his DAWs during his career, looking for the best one to produce his music on.

While he used Steinberg Cubase in the past, he has been using Pro Tools for the past few years.

There are several videos on YouTube where he shows off his home studio.

In them, you can see him using the program to create and produce his music.

Pro Tools is considered by many as a reliable DAW to produce on and works well with several available midi-controllers.

This is an advantage for Puth since he has several pianos along with controllers on which he creates his music.

Puth also uses several old-school synthesizers, which work well with the program that helps him fulfill his sonic needs.

How Does Charlie Puth Produce His Music?

Puth is always in a creative process, ready to work on music at any given moment.

He uses his phone’s voice-notes app to record ideas, and lyrics so he could then dump them into his DAW later.

These recordings are then cleaned up, processed, and reviewed to figure out what works. Puth then records them properly on the DAW.

He would also use other external plugins for instruments that he can’t play. These are programs that allow him to emulate different instruments using his midi-controller.

This would remove any obstacle that might hinder his music-making process.

How Do I Pick the Best Daw for Me?

Like with any program that has several variations, you can pick and choose the one that works with you best.

The best way to do that is to test them by creating a project on them during a trial period, and if you feel comfortable, then go ahead and buy it.

Reaper, Garageband, Logic Pro, Audacity, Adobe Audition, Steinberg Cubase, and Ableton Live are just some of the available ones you can choose from.

Charlie Puth’s Plugins, Keyboards, Synths and Sample Libraries Used On “Attention” — Modern Music Maker

On “Attention” he used Kontakt to layer Native Instruments’ Scarbee Mark 1 (Pink Playboy) with a Triton Studio Music Workstation and a Juno 60.

Charlie took ET in his home studio and told them the Juno 60 was his first vintage synth. He also said he uses a lot of vintage synths because he prefers to use “the real stuff” as opposed to soft synths. Charlie estimated that he had over 15 keyboards.

Midi was triggered with an M-Audio Code 61 keyboard.

Charlie Puth Drum Sound Plugins

Charlie Puth definitely seems to be a fan of Waves. The following plugins were used as inserts, placed directly on the track. It appears in home studio videos that he uses the built-in Pro Tools EQ and relies heavily on Waves for a lot of his producing and mixing.

Musical artist

Charles Otto Puth Jr. ( ; born December 2, 1991) is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. His initial exposure came through the viral success of his song videos uploaded to YouTube. Puth initially signed with the record label eleveneleven after performing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, while songwriting and producing for other artists. With primary intent on a solo career, Atlantic Records and Artist Partner Group eventually sought the artist, and he released his debut single, “Marvin Gaye” (featuring Meghan Trainor), in 2015.[3]

He was then featured on the single “See You Again”, which he co-wrote, co-produced, and performed with Atlantic label-mate Wiz Khalifa for the Furious 7 soundtrack as a tribute to actor Paul Walker. The song peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 for 12 non-consecutive weeks, was certified 11× Platinum by the RIAA, and earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song nomination, along with three nominations at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, including one for Song of the Year. After the success of “See You Again”, he gained worldwide recognition for multiple subsequent releases, including his next single, “One Call Away”. The single reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Puth’s debut studio album, Nine Track Mind, was released in January 2016 to moderate commercial success. The album included the single “We Don’t Talk Anymore” (featuring Selena Gomez), which peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2017, he released two songs, “Attention” and “How Long”, with the former peaking at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.[4] Both were included on his second studio album, Voicenotes (2018), which received generally positive critical reception and peaked at number 4 on the Billboard 200. In 2019, Puth released the singles “I Warned Myself”, “Mother” and “Cheating on You”. The following year, Puth released singles “Girlfriend” and “Hard on Yourself”. After deciding not to put these songs on his next album and scrapping what other songs he had written for it in early 2020, Puth released “Light Switch” in January 2022 as the lead single of his upcoming third studio album Charlie, which is scheduled for a 2022 release. “Light Switch” peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album’s second single, “That’s Hilarious”, was released in April 2022, and its third, “Left and Right”, in June 2022.

By the start of 2021, the YouTube video of the song had amassed over 1.2 billion views.[59] The second single from Voicenotes, “How Long”, was released on October 5, 2017 & peaked at No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100.[60] Puth also collaborated with One Direction’s Liam Payne on the single “Bedroom Floor”, which he co-produced and provided background vocals for.[61] In 2018, he was featured on G-Eazy’s single “Sober”.[62] On January 4, 2018, Puth released the first promotional single of off Voicenotes “If You Leave Me Now” featuring Boyz II Men.[63] Puth also stated in a tweet that he would be pushing the release date to May 11, 2018, from its original release date of January 19, 2018.[64]

On March 15, 2018, “Done for Me” was released as the third single from Voicenotes. The song features singer Kehlani. The song also peaked at No. 53 on the Billboard Hot 100. On March 25, 2018, Puth released the fourth single “Change” featuring James Taylor.[65] A day earlier, Puth sang the song at the March for Our Lives event in Los Angeles.[66] The album also features the songs “The Way I Am” the fifth single off the album.

Voicenotes was released on May 11, 2018, to generally positive reviews from critics;[67] it debuted and peaked at number four on the US Billboard 200 with 58,000 album-equivalent units, of which 39,000 were pure album sales.[68] Puth embarked on the Voicenotes Tour in 2018, with Hailee Steinfeld as a special guest.[69]

2019–present: New music and Charlie [ edit ]

On August 13, 2019, a remix version of the 5 Seconds of Summer song “Easier” with Puth (who also co-wrote and produced the original version) was released.[70] On August 21 of the same year, Puth released a single called “I Warned Myself”;[71] another single, “Mother”, was released on September 12.[72] A third single, “Cheating on You”, was released on October 1, 2019.[73] Puth later revealed that he “didn’t really like any of the music” he released in 2019, and that he “felt like [he] was kind of pretending to be a cool guy”,[74] and in early 2020 he scrapped what he had written for his third studio album.[75][76]

On April 17, 2020, Puth appeared on a remix of Gabby Barrett’s “I Hope” and performed the song live alongside her at the 54th Annual Country Music Association Awards.[77][78] The following day, he performed a song titled “Sick”, which was made during the COVID-19 pandemic.[79] In November 2020, Puth appeared in a remix version of Sasha Sloan’s “Is It Just Me?”.[80] On September 22, 2021, Puth released a song with Elton John titled “After All” as part of John’s album The Lockdown Sessions.[81] The same month he started documenting on TikTok a process of “combin[ing] a seemingly random bunch of thoughts and noises made with different objects into a pop song”, which went viral on the platform;[82] this led to the release of “Light Switch” on January 20, 2022, as the first single of his third studio album Charlie,[83] which is scheduled for release on October 7, 2022.[84] The song peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100.[85] On April 8, 2022, he released the album’s second single, “That’s Hilarious”,[86] which didn’t enter the Hot 100 but peaked at number 96 on the Billboard Global 200[87] and peaked in the top 10 of the New Zealand Hot Singles[88] and Sweden Heatseeker charts.[89] This was followed by a third single, “Left and Right” featuring Jungkook of BTS, released on June 24,[90] which peaked at number 22 on the Hot 100.[91]

Personal life [ edit ]

Growing up, Puth was bullied at school. He said, “They would team up against me so bad and they would kick me in a place that wouldn’t feel fantastic and I would need to throw up and they would then say I was pretending to throw up.”[92] On On Air with Ryan Seacrest he said he had a nervous breakdown from “just being overworked—and I’m in my head a lot and that, in combination with jetlag and, you know, the self-realization that I am getting more famous and my privacy goes out the window pretty much every day—it’s just not what I’m used to, and I don’t think I’m ever going to be used to it, and my therapy is to just put melody to it and sing it.”[93]

Puth started collaborating with clothing brand Hollister Co. in 2017.[94][95]

He said that Justin Bieber’s “viral leap into superstardom as a result of YouTube” influenced him to attempt the same.[96]

What DAW Does Kanye Use?

Artists & Bands What DAW Does Kanye Use?

Kanye West often does not use a DAW when making music. He uses hardware for sampling, writing, and adding beats. However, he and his team have been seen using both Pro Tools and FL Studio for recording.

“I don’t use a computer or a lot of equipment in my studio.” These words were spoken by Kanye in an old interview.

Kanye is not a fan of computers or DAWs. He likes to keep his simple old-school way of following the analog-style music production. Furthermore, for the production of some older tracks, he only used a sampling keyboard. After all, Kanye started producing music well before DAWs were as ubiquitous as they are today.

The footage from “The MC: Why We Do It: A Hip-Hop Documentary” shows a great moment when Kanye shows his skills creating a song with his sampling keyboard adding beats, and enjoying it. It is from the real production process of the song “Higher” by Do Or Die and Kanye West.

Kanye Prefers Making Music With Hardware

West learned music production in the mid-1990s when DAWs were around for a while but still were not that popular. That is why he prefers keeping things less digital and walking on the way he is familiar with. He likes to chop and use samples, especially from the 70’s soul, to create his tracks on which he can rap.

In the book “Kanye West in the Studio: Beats Down! Money Up!” he talks about his process of building up a song: “I sample them at regular speed, then speed them up inside the ASR-10. I just put the pitch up on the sampler, and it will go faster. The ASR-10 is like my left hand. A lot of old songs are too slow to rap on. So I got to speed them up to a rappable tempo.”

This is the so-called “Chipmunk Soul,” which is the hip-hop production style Kanye pioneered.

But of course, as time passed, he started using other gear for his production process. Besides the Ensoniq ASR-10 Keyboard, the hardware he used included Roland VS 1880 24-Bit Digital Audio Workstation, Gemini PT-1000 II Turntable, and Akai MPC2000 MIDI Production Center.

He Uses a DAW During the Recording Process

Like most musicians today, Kanye started using DAWs, at least for the recording phase of the production. Only after creating his tracks with the sampling keyboard, he processes them using Pro Tools. The aim here is to achieve the positive aspects the digital world brings, including the most important one, the maximum sound quality.

For example, for his debut studio album, “The College Dropout,” he sampled many different songs like “The Good The Bad The Ugly” by Dinah Washington and “Through The Fire” by Chaka Khan. He is really into 70’s soul music from which he creates his samples.

He used his ASR-10 to sample the tracks, shift the pitch for making the songs faster and create his own beats. After all these processes, he used Pro Tools to record the tracks. So the DAW is actually there but not for production, just for recording.

Summary

Kanye West is not a big fan of creating everything “in the box” of a DAW. He prefers to use hardware, but like all types of music these days, a DAW is almost certainly used during the recording, mixing, and mastering process.

The fascinating thing about Charlie Puth is that he also produces his own songs and he makes hits. I have always admired the fact that though he isn’t a full-time producer per se, he still pulls off hits with what he knows.

Charlie Puth has perfect pitch, meaning he can guess the exact key of a sound when played. The greatest player that has 1000s of presets and library is amazing. Charlie used these for making his track Attention. Charlie is an amazing keyboard player so, using this library helps his creative sounds with this.

CLA Bass plugin from waves isn’t a Bass plugin but an effect plugin for Bass. You can tweak these settings to manipulate the bass sounds of your actual bass. For example, He has put this plugin on top of the Trillian Bass plugin on the track Attention.

Waves – Renaissance Reverb

Renaissance Reverb or Rverb is a pretty powerful reverb that Charlie Puth uses on his drums and percussion. His reverb choices are pretty unique yet very cool. If you are interested in Waves, then you should check out Waves Bundle.

The Giant is a virtual upright piano that is modeled after the Klavins Piano Model 370i. This piano has such a warm vibe to it that you can actually use it in any genre you like and make it sound extremely good. You should actually go and check out the demo of The Giant.

In the Facebook video of “How I made attention“, this plugin can be seen on his PC.

Native Instruments – DrumLab.

Another Plugin that Charlie Puth uses is the Native Instruments – DrumLab, it’s very hard to get the drums right in your tracks, especially in pop music.
