I can’t speak for everyone, but I find virtual reality really uncomfortable. Every time I’ve tried on a headset at a friend’s behest, I’ve regretted the experience. Not because it isn’t impressive, but because the weird uncanny valley effect makes me feel nauseous. It looks so frighteningly real, but it only ensnares your visual sense; the fact that you can’t smell or taste these virtual locations really messes with me. Throw in a scary setting or some kind of additional thrill element, and I’m immediately out.
Which is why I know for a fact that I would never in my life try this new tourist attraction in Tokyo, that I learned about via SoraNews24. The event is called “Tokyo Tower Bungee VR” and it’s as terrifying as it sounds. At least if you’re like me, and not only afraid of VR, but terrified of heights. The virtual experience lets you safely leap off one of the tallest structures in the Japanese city. Basically, it’s a risk-free way of experiencing a true daredevil act. Which is alluring in its own way.
“Tokyo Tower Bungee VR” is located on the second floor of Tokyo Tower’s main deck. It’s a collaboration between VR developers Logilicity and Cad Center. Logilicity arranged the logistics and Cad Center provided a digital layout of a virtual Tokyo.
Participants wear a VR headset and are strapped into a structure that mimics movement. They then walk along a walkway that protrudes from the tower, and get to take in the beautiful city views along the way. When it’s time to jump, the structure tips and gives the illusion of a plummet. Sounds… fun?

Honestly, even the video above makes me feel queasy, so this is definitely not the experience for me. Now a new virtual reality event is coming to town, and this one is particularly for those seeking an adrenaline rush: bungee jumping off Tokyo Tower.
Dubbed “Tokyo Tower Bungee VR,” this VR event provides a way for folks to leap off one of Tokyo’s tallest structures without the usual safety risks involved. Stationed on the second floor of Tokyo Tower’s main deck, the VR system for this attraction is a collaboration between virtual reality developers Logilicity and Cad Center with the former arranging the logistics and the latter providing the digitized layout of Tokyo’s metropolitan sprawl.
In terms of how bungee jumping in virtual reality goes, participants for this event are essentially strapped to a rack-like structure shown in the photo below. VR headsets are provided by the event organizers, so no worries about having to lug in your own set from home.
Once strapped in, the VR system transports the user to a digitized Tokyo, where they start from a narrow, open-air walkway protruding from Tokyo Tower. After all, similar to bungee jumping in real life, part of the fun is the jitters you get while observing the view below. Participants are more than welcome to look around and enjoy the Tokyo landscape before the big jump—chances are iconic landmarks such as Tokyo Skytree will be somewhere in the distance.
For the fall itself, however, the process is a lot more manual: participants strapped to the rack-like device are basically tipped over. While the scale of the movement may not be the exact same as jumping from a height of 150 meters (164 yards), the visuals do a good job of making you feel as if you’re plummeting down the side of the tower on the end of a bungee rope.

Tokyo Tower Bungee VR will be available until May 9. Tickets go for 1,200 yen (US$11.05) for adults, 1,000 yen (US$9.21) for high school students, and 700 yen (US$6.44) for junior high and elementary school students, separate from the cost of entering Tokyo Tower’s main deck. Reservations are required beforehand and you can reserve your spot here. If you consider yourself a non-thrill-seeker instead, regardless if the thrill is in VR or not, there’s also a plethora of different activities to enjoy in what is one of the most well-known features of the Tokyo skyline.

Just like the real bungee jumping. this Xtreme sport can now simply be experienced at your event without the rental of an expensive crane . The aspiring jumper must not suffer from height fear! Before you step into the VR Bungee experience, the Space Needle staff snaps your photo and as you enjoy the bungee jump, your face is processed into a CGI animation of an avatar doing the jump! A video is then sent to the visitors phone that they can share with their friends and family on social media.
World’s First VR Bungee Jump
The first challenge we had to tackle was the new Guardian feature on the Oculus Quest, which allows users to create a fenced ‘safe zone’ around their position to avoid hitting walls and objects while playing at home. From the offset we were immediately fascinated by the idea of using the Quest to add a layer of impossibility to the real bungee experience – specifically, what would it feel like if we allowed users to crash through the virtual ground? So off the bat, we had to figure out a workaround. Add to that the difficulty of motion tracking while free falling at speeds of up to 50mph and we knew we had a puzzle on our hands.
First-round prototyping and testing were conducted at on outdoor site next to London’s iconic o2 Arena on a full-scale bungee crane and platform. From there we transferred to a controlled indoor rig using a cherry picker crane with the Quest safely strapped to a football. In parallel, and from the safety of the studio, our tech artists began to build out a fully realised Roman Colosseum using the Unreal game engine, the setting for the hair raising plunge into the unknown.
