The spicy-fragrant flowers attract birds, butterflies, and other pollinators in spring.
Maintenance Tips:
If you desire to shape Sugar n’ Spice® Koreanspice Viburnum, use Heading Cuts immediately after the shrub has finished flowering, usually in June. Do not shear or prune after July, as this will cut off the new flower buds for the next year. Be aware that this shrub is a slow grower, so don’t be overzealous in your pruning.
A healthy mulch ring around the plant will keep the roots cool and moist, reducing the chance for disease.
Pests/Problems:
Sugar n’ Spice® Koreanspice Viburnum has no major disease or insect issues when healthy. If the shrub is stressed, it can be susceptible to bacterial, fungal, or insect damage. In especially wet seasons, the plant should be monitored for Viburnum Crown Borer damage. This can be treated with a systemic insecticide containing imidacloprid. The best preventative measure for the plant to make sure it is not stressed; it should be sited in well-drained soil, and in full sun.
Bacterial leaf spot and powdery mildew are also occasional problems but can be remedied by improving air flow and reducing moisture on the leaves.
Leaf Lore:
This is a heavy flowering cultivar with the same sweet-spice, floral fragrance that the species is known for. This cultivar was selected by Mike Yanny in 2000 from open pollinated seedlings in our Johnson’s Nursery production fields. Although the white flower clusters are smaller than other Viburnum carlesii cultivars, they are much more abundant and distributed through the plant. This shrub is a standard size and needs room to fill out to its best form. It retains excellent density and is less prone to one-sidedness. For peak performance, Sugar n’ Spice® Koreanspice Viburnum needs at least six hours of direct sunlight as well as rich, moist, well-drained soil.
In spring, the red flower buds open to abundant flower cymes throughout the plant, partially backed by the emerging dark green foliage. The dense habit makes this shrub a perfect background to show off low foreground perennials. In fall, the foliage turns a brilliant maroon to wine-red color, with different shades present at the same time. This is is an excellent choice where spring and fall interest is needed.
Companion Plants:
Sugar n’ Spice® Koreanspice Viburnum has a large mature size, but grows slowly. It should be paired with perennials that have similar moisture requirements and can be easily transplanted as the viburnum grows larger. The dark green foliage is an excellent backdrop for colorful perennials like Montrose White Calamint, Caramel Coralbells, or Prairie Dropseed.

This viburnum has really stepped up its game! So what makes Sugar n’ Spice™ so special? A standard sized Korean Spicebush, with a super-sized flower display! In mid-spring the plant is dotted with lovely pink buds that open to clusters of white, spicy-sweet flowers. Smaller than average, these flowers are much more abundant throughout the body of the plant.
An in-your-face variety, at nose level, this viburnum will fill your senses with tantalizing fragrance. Plant along a path or close to your outdoor living area. Extending the season, late fall brings an unforgettable display of maroon and red autumn foliage. With few exceptions, no other shrubs offers as much to the garden as Sugar n’ Spice™.

Viburnum is an all around great shrub for just about any garden. Sugar-n-Spice® Korean Spice Viburnum is a deciduous variety that has it all. Lovely foliage that changes color from summer to fall, intensely scented flowers that attract any pollinator that is in your area and a great compact growth habit that needs minimal upkeep.
Korean Spice Viburnum also sets berries for the fall and winter that birds are very attracted to. The lovely, waxy flowers can be used for flower arranging alongside the foliage that acts as a filler for the vase. The compact size of Sugar-n-Spice Viburnum makes it easier to incorporate into an existing garden as a specimen or plant as part of an informal hedge along a driveway or fenceline.
Sugar-n-Spice® Korean Spice Viburnum Care
Viburnum can tolerate a wide range of growing conditions. Full sun to part shade is fine. Average to rich soil is definitely a plus. Acidic to alkaline soil is no problem. Consistent watering early is the key to making Sugar-n-Spice® Korean Spice Viburnum more drought tolerant as it establishes in the garden. Soaker hoses or drip irrigation are the most efficient ways to ensure proper watering.
Pruning should only be done after flowering to ensure blooms the following season. Sugar-n-Spice® will need much less pruning to keep its naturally compact shape. A slow release, well balanced fertilizer applied early in the spring will support healthy foliage growth and profuse blooming. Mulching with an organic compost or leaves in the fall will insulate the shrub over the winter while enriching and boosting the water holding capacity of the soil.
Sugar-n-Spice® Korean Spice Viburnum Spacing
The mature height and width of Sugar-n-Spice® is 6-8 feet. Mass planting of this Viburnum is very effective in a large garden. Sugar-n-Spice® can be used in a smaller garden as a specimen plant or even as a container growing shrub on a deck or patio. Space the shrubs at 6 feet on center when planting in the ground. A pot must be at least 24 inches in diameter, with excellent drainage, if growing in a container.

For new plantings, dig a hole one and a half times wider than the plant’s container; place plant in hole, keeping the top of the root ball ground level; and back fill with dirt. Wind, temperature and soil are factors to consider in watering. Feed plants in early spring and again in early fall with an all-purpose fertilizer, following label instructions.
