OceanView – Software (Option)
OceanView is our flagship desktop spectroscopy application. Available for Windows, MacOS and Linux, it provides full control of all Ocean Optics spectrometers. OceanView is the recommended software for use with Ocean Optics spectrometers.
Automated Wizards
OceanView provides numerous automated Wizards ready to walk you through complex spectroscopy and color processing tasks. Just select the task you wish to perform (absorbance, Raman, colormetrics etc), and intuitive forms will walk you through each step in data collection and process configuration.
Schematic View
Beyond simple “scope mode” visualization, OceanView allows you to generate, edit and export complete spectral process flow diagrams using a natural “schematic” dataflow. Anyone familiar with LabVIEW or similar tools will be instantly at ease in this straightforward diagram-based process model.
Create, configure, and connect schematic nodes to read data from devices, transform and combine that data through a library of built-in spectroscopic functions, and then output the results to visual graphs and Excel-ready CSV files.

Whether you need to carefully capture events at faster-than-human timescales, or if you just want to leave an extended test running over a 3-day weekend, OceanView is able to log the data you need for post-action analysis. Spectra can be saved singly as snapshots, or streamed to a continually-growing table which can be opened directly to Excel for evaluation and charting. You can save full spectra in either mode, or select specific wavelengths or ranges for focused strip-charts over time.

Ocean Optics USB4000 VIS-NIR Optical Spectrometer – CMC Microsystems
The Ocean Optics USB4000 VIS-NIR ES is a miniature plug-and-play optical spectrometer suitable for laboratory benchtop analysis and characterization of fluidic and gaseous media. This instrument performs automated absorption and transmission testing across a wavelength range extending from visible to near IR wavelengths. It is equipped with a high-power broadband optical source (top left in the photo below) and standard optical fibre-based fixture to focus and collect light into a standard 3-ml sample holder (cuvette system, at bottom right). Its small form factor and standard USB interface make it easy to incorporate into your lab’s characterization set-up. You may use Ocean Optics’ LabView-based software development tools to enhance or adapt the spectrometer’s control and analysis user interface to your own system prototyping needs. The USB4000 is fully compatible with the CMC Microsystems Integration Platform (MIP).

Do Ocean Optics USB4000 (UV-VIS and VIS-NIR) Spectrometers Work with LabQuest App?
– The short answer is: Maybe, but probably not. (please see the details below)
– There are two USB4000 models: USB4000 VIS-NIR and USB4000 UV-VIS
They behave differently, so be sure to identify which one you are using, and then follow the appropriate instructions below.
1. Ocean Optics USB4000 VIS-NIR
a. A powered USB Hub is required with LabQuest (but not with Logger Pro on a computer). This unit is NOT powered by a separate power supply, and receives its power through USB. It requires more power than LabQuest can deliver, so it identifies temporarily, but then disappears from the screen. The reason? It is requesting far more power than the USB limit. BUT, if you connect the USB to a powered USB hub, then into LabQuest, it will work fine. We have tested 2 powered hubs successfully (Targus USB 2.0 7-port Hub, and a D-Link DUB-H7 USB 2.0 Hub). Others might work, too, but have not been tested.
b. If ONLY the detector part of the USB4000 SP-VIS is being used to measure emissions (with the cuvette holder/light source removed), the powered hub is NOT required.
2. Ocean Optics USB4000 UV-VIS – we strongly recommend against using these units with a LabQuest
a. Even though this unit is separately powered with its own AC Adapter, there may be power or firmware compatibility issues that cannot be resolved. To make it trickier, some units will work and others will not.
b. There is a specific order of addition to follow when setting up the UV-VIS spectrometer. To successfully connect it to a LabQuest, please follow these steps strictly:
– Connect the AC adapter to the spectrometer and plug in the adapter to an outlet.
– Connect the UV-VIS spectrometer to a LabQuest.
– Run the LabQuest App. If the LQ App is already running, it may take a few seconds for the spectrometer’s fan to turn on and the App to recognize the spectrometer.
(Note: If you connect to USB first, THEN power, the unit will not work with LabQuest App.)
