Lost Communication with All Terrain Control Module

What does that mean?

This is a generic communication system diagnostic trouble code that applies to most vehicle makes and models.

This code means that the All Terrain Control Module (ATCM) and other control modules on the vehicle are not talking to each other. The circuit most often used to communicate with is known as Controller Area Network bus communications, or simply put, CAN bus.

Without this CAN bus, control modules cannot exchange information, and your scan tool may not be able to get information from the vehicle, depending on which circuit is affected.

The ATCM receives input from a variety of sensors, some hardwired directly to it, some are sent over the bus communications system. These inputs allow the module to control both the height of the vehicle and the drive line application, possibly whether it is a two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive application. It also has the ability to change the gear ratio applied to the drive axles and the amount of torque applied to the drive line.

Troubleshooting steps may vary depending upon manufacturer, type of communications system, number of wires and wire colors in the communication system.

Severity & Symptoms

Severity in this case depends upon the system. Because this suspension/drivetrain control system provides safety during hard steering and braking maneuvers, safety is a concern when diagnosing these systems. Also, safety is a concern during servicing of these systems as well. ALWAYS consult service information prior to disassembly/diagnosing these systems.

Symptoms of a U0138 engine code may include:

Red Brake Warning Light On

Amber Antilock Light On

Traction Control Light On or Flashing, depending on system

Check Suspension Light On, depending on system

Causes

Typically the causes for this code to set are:

Open in the CAN bus + circuit

Open in the CAN bus – circuit

Short to power in either CAN bus circuit

Short to ground in either CAN bus circuit

Open power or ground to ATCM module – most common

Rarely – faulty control module

Diagnostic and Repair Procedures

A good starting point is always to check for technical service bulletins (TSB) for your particular vehicle. Your issue may be a known issue with a known fix put out by the manufacturer and can save you time and money during diagnosis.

If your scan tool can access fault codes and the only one you retrieve from other modules is the U0138, try to access the all terrain control module. If you can access codes from the ATCM module, then the U0138 code is either intermittent or a memory code. If unable to access codes for the ATCM module, then the U0138 code that the other modules are setting is active, and the problem is there now.

The most common failure is loss of power or ground to the ATCM module.

Check all fuses that power up the ATCM module on this vehicle. Check all grounds for the ATCM. Locate where the ground attaching points are on the vehicle and make sure that these connections are clean and tight. If you have to, take them off, get a small wire bristle brush and baking soda/water solution and clean each one, both the connector and where it connects.

If any repairs were made, clear the diagnostic trouble codes from memory, and see if the U0138 code returns or if you are able to communicate with the ATCM module. If the code does not return or communication is re-established, then the fuses/connections were most likely your problem.

If the code returns, locate the CAN C bus communication connections on your particular vehicle, most importantly the ATCM module connector. Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the connector at the ATCM control module. Once located, visually inspect the connectors and wiring. Look for scraping, rubbing, bare wires, burn spots or melted plastic. Pull the connectors apart and carefully inspect the terminals (the metal parts) inside the connectors. See if they look burned or have a green tint indicating corrosion. Use electrical contact cleaner and a plastic bristle brush if cleaning of the terminals is needed. Let dry and apply electrical grease where the terminals contact.

Before connecting the connectors back to the ATCM module, make these few voltage checks. You will need to have access to a digital volt-ohmmeter (DVOM). Verify that you have power and ground at the ATCM module. Gain access to a wiring diagram and determine where the main powers and grounds come into the ATCM module. Reconnect the battery before continuing, with the ATCM module still disconnected. Connect the red lead of your voltmeter to each B+ (battery voltage) supply coming into the ATCM module connector and the black lead of your voltmeter to a good ground (if not sure, battery negative always works). You see a reading of battery voltage. Verify that you have good grounds as well. Hook the red lead of your voltmeter to battery positive (B+) and the black lead to each ground circuit. Once again you should see battery voltage at each connection. If not, repair the power or ground circuit problem.

Next, check the two communication circuits. Locate the CAN C+ (or HSCAN + circuit) and CAN C- (or HSCAN – circuit). With the black lead of your voltmeter connected to a good ground, connect the red lead to CAN C+. With the Key On, Engine Off, you should see about 2.6 volts and fluctuating slightly. Next, connect the red voltmeter lead to the CAN C- circuit. You should see approximately 2.4 volts and fluctuating slightly. Other manufacturers show CAN C- at approximately .5 volts and fluctuating Key On Engine Off. Check the specifications for your manufacturer.

If all tests have passed and communication is still not possible, or you were unable to clear the U0138 fault code, the only thing left that can be done is to seek assistance from a trained automotive diagnostician, as this would indicate a failed ATCM module. Most of these ATCM modules must be programmed, or calibrated to the vehicle in order to be installed correctly.

What does this mean?

This is a generic communication system diagnostic trouble code that applies to most makes and models of vehicles.

This code means that the All Terrain Control Module (ATCM) and other control modules on the vehicle are not communicating with each other. The circuitry most commonly used for communication is known as Controller Area Bus communication, or simply the CAN bus.

Without this CAN bus, control modules cannot communicate and your scan tool may not receive information from the vehicle, depending on which circuit is involved.

The ATCM receives input data from various sensors, some of which are directly connected to it, and some are transmitted over a bus communication system. These inputs allow the module to control both the vehicle height and the powertrain application, possibly whether it is a two or four wheel drive application. It can also change the gear ratio applied to the drive axles and the amount of torque applied to the transmission.

Troubleshooting steps may vary depending on the manufacturer, the type of communication system, the number of wires, and the colors of the wires in the communication system.

Severity and symptoms

The severity in this case depends on the system. Symptoms of a U0138 engine code may include:

Red brake warning light is on

Amber anti-lock indicator included

The traction control indicator light is on or flashing, depending on the system

Check if the suspension light is on, depending on the system.

Open in CAN + bus circuit

Open in the CAN bus – electrical circuit

Short circuit to power in any CAN bus circuit

Short to ground in any CAN bus circuit

A power or ground interruption to the ATCM is the most common

Rarely – faulty control module

Diagnostic and repair procedures

A good starting point is always to check the Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) for your particular vehicle. Your problem may be a known issue with a known manufacturer-released fix and could save you time and money while troubleshooting.

If your scan tool can access DTCs and the only code you retrieve from other modules is U0138, try accessing the ATV control module. If you can access the codes from the ATCM, then the U0138 code is either intermittent or memory code. If the codes for the ATCM cannot be accessed, then the code U0138 set by other modules is active and the problem already exists.

The most common failure is loss of power or ground to the ATCM.

Check all fuses supplying the ATCM on this vehicle. Check all grounds for the ATCM. Locate grounding attachment points on the vehicle and make sure these connections are clean and secure. If necessary, remove them, take a small wire bristle brush and baking soda / water solution and clean each one, both the connector and the place where it connects.

If any repairs have been made, clear the DTCs from memory and see if U0138 returns or you can contact the ATCM. If no code is returned or communication is restored, the problem is most likely a fuse / connection issue.

If the code returns, look for the CAN C bus connections on your specific vehicle, especially the ATCM connector. Disconnect the negative battery cable before disconnecting the connector on the ATCM control module. Once detected, visually inspect the connectors and wiring. Look for scratches, scuffs, exposed wires, burn marks, or molten plastic. Disconnect the connectors and carefully inspect the terminals (metal parts) inside the connectors. See if they look burnt or have a green tint indicating corrosion. If you need to clean the terminals, use an electrical contact cleaner and a plastic bristle brush. Allow to dry and apply electrical grease where the terminals touch.

Perform these few voltage checks before plugging the connectors back into the ATCM. You will need access to a digital volt ohm meter (DVOM). Make sure the ATCM has power and ground. Access the wiring diagram and determine where the primary power and ground supplies go into the ATCM. Connect the battery before proceeding with the ATCM disconnected. Connect the red wire of your voltmeter to each B + (battery voltage) power supply going into the ATCM connector, and the black wire of your voltmeter to a good ground (if unsure, the negative pole of the battery always works). You can see the battery voltage reading. Make sure you have a good reason. Connect the red wire from the voltmeter to battery positive (B +) and the black wire to each ground. Once again, you should see the battery voltage every time you plug it in. If not, troubleshoot the power or ground circuit.

Then check the two communication circuits. Find CAN C + (or HSCAN +) and CAN C- (or HSCAN – chain) circuit. After connecting the black wire of the voltmeter to a reliable ground, connect the red wire to CAN C +. With the key on and the engine off, you should see about 2.6 volts with slight fluctuations. Then connect the red wire of the voltmeter to the CAN C- circuit. You should see about 2.4 volts with slight fluctuations. Other manufacturers show CAN C- at about 5V and a flapping key when the engine is off. Check out your manufacturer’s specifications.

If all tests pass and communication is still not possible, or you were unable to reset DTC U0138, the only thing that can be done is to seek help from a trained automotive diagnostician, as this will indicate a failed ATCM module. Most of these ATCMs must be programmed or calibrated for the vehicle in order to be installed correctly.

| U0138 code description A Controller Area Network (CAN) is a vehicle bus standard designed to interconnect automotive devices without a host computer. Operating information and commands are exchanged among the devices. The devices have programmed information about what messages are needed to be exchanged on the serial data circuits. CAN bus uses two dedicated wires for communication. The wires are called CAN high and CAN low. When the CAN bus is in idle mode, both lines carry 2.5V. When data bits are being transmitted, the CAN high line goes to 3.75V, and the CAN low drops to 1.25V, thereby generating a 2.5V differential between the lines. Since communication relies on a voltage differential between the two bus lines, the CAN bus is NOT sensitive to inductive spikes, electrical fields, or other noise.
