Inside the Last Great Mafia Empire

Big news only for my newsletter subscribers View this email in your browser Ebook Excerpt:

The Cicale Files, Vol. 1

Inside the Last Great Mafia Empire

Stories of the Bonanno Family

Lots of latecomers signed up last night, so I am resending the newsletter… I finally wrote my first book — an ebook submitted to Kindle. It’s around 20,000 words, which in paperback format is probably close to 90 pages. Look for it this week, most likely by Friday.

You, my newsletter subscribers, are the first to hear this announcement.

The book is based on the experiences of former Bonanno crime family capo Dominick Cicale, also the co-author. Dominick was tight with Vincent “Vinny Gorgeous” Basciano.

The following excerpt pertains to Anthony “Tony Green” Urso, a capo who briefly served as Joe Massino’s acting boss. Anthony “Tony Green” Urso was a mobster but also a single male. He had a sharp eye for the ladies. Vinny Basciano was a hell of a good ventriloquist when he talked out of the side of his mouth.

Tony Green, Former Bonanno Street Boss, Resides At Brooklyn Halfway House

When they convicted Massino, the Feds seemed to be batting a thousand: thanks to significant help from turncoat associates and wiseguys, they also were able to take down the heads of two other crime families : Gambino boss Peter Gotti and acting Luchese boss Louis (Louie Bagels) Daidone.

Reminder: Turn your clocks back one hour tonight…

daylight saving time ends at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 1

In January 2003, Massino was arrested and Tony Green started running the show. Urso’s tenure was to short but memorable. Little is known of the man’s early pre-Cosa Nostra life except that he was possibly dyslexic. He moved to New York City and eventually hooked up with the Bonanno crime family.

Following Napolitano’s 1983 murder, Urso was put in Massino’s crew. Eventually, he grew close to Massino and drove for him. By 1988, Urso likely was elevated to capo. In the 1990s, then-underboss Vitale grew increasingly jealous of Urso’s new power in the family and attempted to persuade Massino to murder Urso based on fabricated accusations.

“Vitale was my biggest enemy within the family, so much so that on several occasions he attempted to have me killed by bringing false accusations against me,” Urso later stated in a letter prior to his sentencing.

“These accusations were dismissed as ridiculous by Massino because he knew of the jealousy on Vitale’s part, and Massino knew that I was a loyal friend to him.”

Addendum: Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

The best lack all conviction, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;

Surely the Second Coming is at hand.

The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out

When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi

Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;

A shape with lion body and the head of a man,

A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,

Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it

Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again but now I know

That twenty centuries of stony sleep

Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,

And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,

Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

.

In response, former acting underboss Joseph Cammarano cautioned Urso not to do anything that could hurt the family’s then official boss Massino, who at the time was awaiting trial for eight murders.Bonanno turncoat James (Louie) Tartaglione wore the wire that recorded Urso’s infamous speech. Tartaglione recorded numerous discussions with Urso and Cammarano. The recordings were part of a four-year probe that led Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn to indict 27 Bonanno wiseguys and associates for racketeering and murder in January 2004.Federal prosecutors played Urso’s tape-recorded words at the trial of Massino, the so-called Last Don who was found guilty of seven mob murders and other racketeering charges.

Recent allegation of unrest within the Bonanno crime family centered around reputed capo John Palazzolo has seemingly led to…

Anthony Urso

Anthony “Tony Green” Urso (b. 1937 Franklin Square, New York ) is a high-ranking member within the Bonanno crime family in New York.

Criminal & made member

According to US law enforcement, Urso was identified as a made member of the Bonanno crime family from the year of 1988. Reputedly a lower associate of Joseph “Big Joe” Massino, then the powerful Underboss , Urso would become involved in various criminal activities as the 1990s proved to be very lucrative for the Bonanno family. Urso, of East Meadow , Long Island , was promoted to caporegime of the family sometime in the 1990s, as Massino took over after Philip “Rusty” Rastelli’s death. Capo under Massino

As Joseph Massino expanded a very shaken crime family in the early 1990s, Urso reportedly went under the radar for over a decade, while operating with criminal activities in various places all over New York. A powerful Bonanno figure heavily involved in extortion and loansharking operations, Urso was soon favored by Massino and Underboss Salvatore “Good Looking Sal” Vitale during the 1990s. Acting Boss

However, in 2003, Massino, Vitale and dozens of Bonanno crime family members were arrested and indicted for committing various criminal activities in violation of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act . As Massino was removed off the streets, he promoted Urso to Acting boss of the Bonanno crime family, and to run its day-to-day activities with the remaining captains. With Massino’s in court, he used his lawyer to communicate with Urso, and even used his lawyer’s office as a meeting place with Urso, Vitale and Vincent “Vinny Gorgeous” Basciano, however, when Underboss Vitale decided to turn state’s evidence, as well as another two caporegimes also began to cooperate, Urso soon became a target for US law enforcement. Especially when a taped conversation took place between him and capo Joseph “Joe Saunders” Cammarano, where Urso proposed to murder the children to the ones turning on the Cosa Nostra. Downfall and prison

However, with more than one taped conversation including Urso discussing murder , extortion and racketeering with other members of the Bonanno crime family , US law enforcement indicted Urso, Cammarano and twenty five others within the Bonanno crime family on twenty counts of racketeering charges in January of 2004. Urso was charged with acts of extortion, loansharking, illegal gambling and conspiracy to murder Anthony Tomasulo , who was murdered in May 1990 for failing to pay a portion of the receipts of illegal joker-poker gambling machines to the Bonanno family. With several captains turning state’s evidence, Urso faced life imprisonment if convicted. In early 2004, Urso pled guilty and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. As of October, 2008, Urso is incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Elkton, Ohio . His projected release-date is December 5 , 2021 . By MITCHEL MADDUX, New York Post

A former Bonanno crime family captain who helped put mob boss Vinny “Gorgeous” Basciano away for life — and who also ratted out dozens of other wiseguys — was sentenced today to 10 years in prison for his role in two Mafia rubouts.

Dominick Cicale, who has already served seven years behind bars, will get credit for that time, and when he gets out will be re-settled under a new identity in the witness-protection program.

At one time, the 44-year-old was a close friend and trusted lieutenant of former Bonanno boss Basciano.

But Cicale eventually betrayed his friend, became a government informant, and took the witness stand last year as one of the star witnesses to help convict Basciano of a mob murder

was a momentous decision that may have saved his life.

Prior to becoming an FBI informant, Cicale was facing a potential death penalty trial for his role in two fatal mob hits – including the 2004 killing of Bonanno associate Randy Pizzolo

In the end, Cicale’s decision to switch sides has brought a new lease on life, considering the “extraordinary assistance he has given the government,” Brooklyn Federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis said.

”Alright, Mr. Cicale – this is your chance. I hope you will live a law-abiding and productive life,” Garaufis said.

The judge, however, noted the “Faustian bargain” that law enforcement authorities must make with unsavory criminals in order to glean information that will aid in prosecuting other mobsters.

He described Cicale as a man whose hallmarks of adult existence were “a lifetime of violence and an utter disregard for human life.”

Garaufis also pointed out that Cicale’s admitted participation in three different murders suggested traits of “viciousness and violence that were exceptional – even by organized crime standards.”

“Mr. Cicale is a true career criminal,” the judge said.

Assistant US Attorneys Nicole Argentieri and Greg Andres said nevertheless that Cicale provided a wealth of vital intelligence that helped convict a long list of ruthless mobsters.

In a detailed 58-page brief, prosecutors documented case after Mafia case where Cicale offered insider information that proved helpful — among them prosecutions of “more than a dozen inducted members of the Bonanno family.”

“Cicale’s information was particularly critical due to the leadership fluctuations in the Bonanno family’s hierarchy in the days after the incarceration and conviction of longtime Bonanno family boss Joseph Massino, and the arrest of acting boss Anthony “Tony Green” Urso and others,” the prosecutors wrote.

Inside information supplied by Cicale also “fueled a series of additional prosecutions and was used, in part, to eliminate — or at least incapacitate — the succeeding four Bonanno family administrations and bosses,” including Basciano, Michael “The Nose” Mancuso, Nicholas “Nicky Mouth” Santora, and Salvatore “Sal the Ironworker” Montagna, the feds wrote read more Here

PEELED BONANNOS – GODFATHERS AMONG 27 NAILED IN FED BUST

The feds hit a Bonanno bonanza yesterday, rounding up more than two dozen reputed wiseguys in a crushing blow to the crime family.

Over 150 FBI agents and NYPD detectives fanned out to arrest acting boss Anthony “Tony Green” Urso and acting underboss Joseph “Joe C.” Cammarano – as well as eight capos and 12 made men – on racketeering and 15 murder charges early yesterday.

The so-called “Godfather of Canada” Vito Rizzuto – an alleged Bonanno wiseguy and the most powerful Mafioso in his country – was also arrested for a 23-year-old triple hit on three capos that was portrayed in the movie “Donnie Brasco.”

A total of 27 made men and mob associates were indicted, the feds said.

The bust came after a high-ranking capo secretly agreed to tape top-level meetings. “For the first time ever, made members of the Bonanno family, including a high ranking member, agreed to record their conversations with other members of the Bonanno family and their associates,” said Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Roslynn Mauskopf.

“With this unprecedented access to the Bonanno family’s inner circle, we had front-row seats from which to view the family’s leadership and operations.”

Sources close to the case identified the wired-up informant as James “Big Lou” Tartaglione – a mobster who pleaded guilty to extortion charges in the late 1990s, but has been out of prison on supervised release for the past 1½ years.

During an administration meeting last September – one of several that sources say Tartaglione recorded over the past six months – Urso allegedly made threats against innocent relatives of cooperating witnesses, which is a Mafia taboo.

“Why should rats’ kids be happy, where my kids or your kids should suffer because I’m away for life,” Urso said, according to court papers. “If you take one kid, I hate to say it, and do what you got to do, they’ll think twice.”

The tapes also detail numerous sitdowns, shakedowns and inductions of new members into the crime family, according to court papers. Urso’s lawyer, Edward Jenks, said the new case is based on an “avalanche of lies.”

The reputed mob bigs arrested are accused of stepping in to fill a void left by reputed boss Joseph Massino, who has been in prison for a year awaiting trial on numerous murder charges and could face the death penalty.

Massino was accused yesterday of continuing to steer the Bonanno family from behind bars by passing messages through his wife and one of his lawyers, who is not named in court papers. “We’ve got enough on our minds that we don’t need to try and run a crime family,” said defense attorney David Breitbart, who leads Massino’s four-member legal team. “It’s a nasty way of trying to undermine the relationships in this case.”

Massino also has allegedly charged every wiseguy in his family a $100 “tax” to go toward his “defense fund.”

At least six mob cooperators, in addition to Tartaglione, helped the feds decimate the Bonanno crime family – most notably Salvatore Vitale, Massino’s brother-in-law and former underboss, sources said.

The 1992 murder of Robert Perrino, a former superintendent of delivery for The Post, is one of the numerous murders contained in the new indictment. He was under investigation by the feds at the time he was whacked, allegedly by a Bonanno crew that suspected he was going to cooperate.

Perrino’s body was recovered on Staten Island last month.
