The Holy Longing

The Holy Longing

poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Tell a wise person, or else keep silent,

because the mass man will mock it right away.

I praise what is truly alive,

what longs to be burned to death.

In the calm water of the love-nights,

where you were begotten, where you have begotten,

a strange feeling comes over you,

when you see the silent candle burning.

Now you are no longer caught in the obsession with darkness,

and a desire for higher love-making sweeps you upward.

Distance does not make you falter.

Now, arriving in magic, flying,

and finally, insane for the light,

you are the butterfly and you are gone.

And so long as you haven’t experienced this: to die and so to grow,

you are only a troubled guest on the dark earth.

Translated from the German by Robert Bly

The Holy Longing, Goethe

I don’t agree that there’s a clear distinction between the sacred and the secular. I agree with what Lonndubh said. Everything is sacred and not-sacred.

Adam you are still turning every thread into a discussion about money and greed. I think the more you discover the sacred within your self, the more you change your own behaviour (which is all you are in charge of, ultimately), to be less greedy and to act in ways that benefit not just yourself but the wider world. That doesn’t necessarily mean going to fewer concerts. Leonard Cohen is not much concerned with money I don’t think, and he has donated to charity – in Israel, and in Australia, as recent examples. Also, in the news section there is talk of an upcoming charity concert in Cambodia.

There is an African proverb I came across recently that I like a lot:

If we go forwards, we die. If we go backwards, we die. So let’s go forwards and die.

(I’ve been searching to see if Goethe has written any other good poems, but they all seem pretty tame, compared to this one.)

Designing a life around what matters — The Holy Longing

Anyone who is awake experiences a holy longing. It arises when you realize that there is much more to life than what you’ve perceived. And that there is much more to you than you’ve accepted. That there is a life force, a spiritual energy, behind a curtain that you are just now noticing.

To acknowledge it without diminishing the present moment no matter how difficult, is the way of the spiritual warrior. As long as you experience your life here through the lens of deficiency you will suffer.

The way you measure your worth is deficient and artificial, based on measurements of the culture or society you inhabit. Understanding that you are a limitless spirit in an ecstatic dance with the universe brings you alive in the here and now even as you long for that open space where your spirit dances unencumbered by the material world.

To surrender that false hope that this life should be different is to find peace and freedom from suffering here. You surrender your smallness at each step in order to move closer to your longing.

It’s only when you sit quietly, understanding that the thoughts that run you cause your suffering, that you come to understand that whatever is in front of you is telling you that yes, you are capable of more, being more, than what your human condition tells you. These things seen through the lens of self compassion remind you that you are indeed a spiritual being reaching for the light and dancing in the cosmos.

No one that I know has expressed this more clearly and poetically than Goethe. I leave you with the poem, The Holy Longing.

The Holy Longing

Tell a wise person or else keep silent

for those who do not understand

will mock it right away.

I praise what is truly alive

what longs to be burned to death.

In the calm waters of the love nights

where you were begotten, where you have begotten

a strange feeling creeps over you

as you watch the silent candle burning.

Now you are no longer caught

in the obsession with darkness

and a desire for higher lovemaking

sweeps you upwards.

Distance does not make you falter,

now, arriving in magic, flying

and finally insane for the light

you are the butterfly, and you are gone.

And so long as you have not experienced

this: to die and so to grow

you are only a troubled guest

on the dark earth.

~ Goethe, translated by Robert Bly and David Whyte.

Reflections and Revelations

When we miss and long for a loved one, no matter who they are or have been to us, we are actually missing the alignment with Self/Love we experience when we flow Love toward them in their (physical) presence. (The mind has attached to them the source of our Love and the good feeling of alignment and home, instead of our abiding in Self, remaining wakeful to their being the external reflection of Self to whom we flow Love, always sourced in Self.) We are not missing them, we are missing alignment with Self/Love, and we are feeling that distance, that gap, between (the concept / identity of) me and Me, the most excruciating rift of all. And all arising emotion is the signal to return to alignment and close that (illusory) gap! All longing is always for the Self!! The Holy Longing! The moment we realize this and return home to Self, to alignment, we not only experience the missing dissolve, but also experience all other perceived gaps and distances dissolve. And so, we have an instantaneous and visceral sense of the loved one’s presence, as One-Self, no matter where they are physically, and no matter whether they exist in the physical or have passed on in body. The paradox is that it is the missing and longing that separates us from our beloved… as it separates us from Self, and ‘the other’ is none but One-Self in reflection! The Holy Longing a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and a favorite of all time Tell a wise person, or else keep silent, because the mass man will mock it right away. I praise what is truly alive, what longs to be burned to death. When barriers arise before you and it seems all is lost, take heart and remember the longing and a divine redemption. Walking through the fire to heal and grow again hurts but, only good can come of it. Those who bear false witness have spoken. They forget there is a higher power… A tree doesn’t stop growing because some throw garbage at it. It grows because others send love to it. It grows because it must.

Cont’d Below

“We must not hope to be mowers, And to gather the ripe gold ears, Unless we have first been sowers And water the furrows with tears. It is not just as we take it, This mystical world of ours, Life’s field will yield as we make it A harvest of thorns or of flowers.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
