Ireland

The roots of the Anglo-Saxon name Streeter come from when the family resided in any of a number of places called Street, in Hertshire, Kent and Somerset. [1]

Streeter is a local surname, which belongs to the category of hereditary surnames. Other types of local surnames include topographic surnames, which could be given to a person who lived beside any physical feature, such as a hill, stream, church or type of tree. Habitation names form the other broad category of surnames that were derived from place-names. They were derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads. Other local names are derived from the names of houses, manors, estates, regions, and entire counties. The surname Streeter comes from the Old English word strรฆt, which means Roman road. In the Middle Ages, this word came to denote the main street in a village, and so the surname may also refer to someone who lived on the main street. [2] [3]

The Slatter Motto +

The motto was originally a war cry or slogan. Mottoes first began to be shown with arms in the 14th and 15th centuries, but were not in general use until the 17th century. Thus the oldest coats of arms generally do not include a motto. Mottoes seldom form part of the grant of arms: Under most heraldic authorities, a motto is an optional component of the coat of arms, and can be added to or changed at will; many families have chosen not to display a motto.

Motto: Crescit sub pondere virtus

Streeter Coat of Arms / Streeter Family Crest

Coat of Arms & Family Crests Store Streeter Coat of Arms / Streeter Family Crest The surname of STREETER was derived from the Old English word Straet – the dweller by the Roman Road, from residence on the crossroads. The name was originally rendered in the Latin form STRATA, and in the Middle Ages the word also came to denote the main street in a village. Local names usually denoted where a man held land, and literally denoted where he lived. The name is also spelt STREET, STREETE, STREETER, STRETE and STREATER. Early records of the name mention Robert de Strete, 1100 Hampshire. Thomas del Street was documented in County Somerset during the reign of Edward II (1327-1377). Elyas del Strete of Yorkshire was listed in the Yorkshire Poll tax of 1379. Thomas, son of Robert Street was baptised at St. James’s, Clerkenwell, London in the year 1572. John Streat and Rose Preedy were married at St. George’s, Hanover Square, London in 1803. An eminent member of the family name was George Edmund Street (1824-1881) who was an English architect born in Woodford, Essex. He was assistant to Sir George Scott, and started his own practice in 1849. He restored Christ Church in Dublin, and designed neo-Gothic buildings including the London Law Courts and scores of churches. Originally the coat of arms identified the wearer, either in battle or in tournaments. Completely covered in body and facial armour the knight could be spotted and known by the insignia painted on his shield, and embroidered on his surcoat, the draped garment which enveloped him. Between the 11th and 15th centuries it became customary for surnames to be assumed in Europe, but were not commonplace in England or Scotland before the Norman Conquest of 1066. They are to be found in the Domesday Book of 1086. Those of gentler blood assumed surnames at this time, but it was not until the reign of Edward II (1307-1327) that second names became general practice for all people. Most of the European surnames were formed in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The process had started somewhat earlier and had continued in some places into the 19th century, but the norm is that in the tenth and eleventh centuries people did not have surnames, whereas by the fifteenth century most of the population had acquired a second name.

English

The name ‘Streeter’ originates from England. It is a habitation name from any of the various places so called from the Old English word ‘stroet’ meaning Roman Road (from the Latin word ‘strata’ (via), from past patronymic of ‘sternere’ meaning to strew, cover, surface). In the Middle Ages the name also came to denote the main street in a village, and so the surname ‘Street’ may also have been a topographic name for someone who lived in a main street. It was also a nickname ‘the streeter’, used for someone who dwelt in the street. Compiled information from Historical and Private archive’s has confirmed that the surname ‘Streeter’ and or it’s variant’s, dates as far back as the 16th century were a ‘William Streeter’, from the county of Sussex, England, is registered a the University of Oxford in 1594. The exact period of settlement in North America has not been definitely determined but Information extracted from Public and Civil registry archive’s confirm that one of the first settlers was a certain ‘Joseph Street’, who emigrated to North America in 1774, sailing from the Port of London aboard the ship named the ‘Russia Merchant’ on the tenth of July 1774, arriving in Maryland on the seventeenth of July of the same, where he served as an indentured. Today, ‘Streeter’ is the ‘Eight hundred and twenty-sixth’ most common surname in North America. …

y-Chromosome DNA STREETER Surname Project

Y-Chromosome DNA Streeter Surname Project Project launched 19 May 2003 | Page updated 1 January 2021 Click here to join now!

Origins of the STREETER Surname and Common Spelling Variants

The name, STREETER, is of English origin and designates one who lives near an ancient roman road or on the main street of a village; it is almost exclusively unique to Sussex. It is a variation of STREET, which comes from the Old English stroet for roman road which comes from the Latin strata, from the past participle of sternere, to strew, cover, surface. Other variations include STRETE, STREETE, STREETS, STREATER, and STREAT (Patricia Hanks and Flavia Hodges, A Dictionary of Surnames [Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1988]).

However, multiple English STREETER families may have adopted STREETER as their surname so not all STREETERs are related. Exceptions include STREETERs whose ancestors adopted the surname as an Anglicization of a non-English synonym surname such as the German surname, Streider. Thus, with few exceptions, all STREETERs can trace their origins to Anglo-Saxon or Norman forebears in Southeast England. However, multiple English STREETER families may have adopted STREETER as their surname so not all STREETERs are related.Exceptions include STREETERs whose ancestors adopted the surname as an Anglicization of a non-English synonym surname such as the German surname,

Participation in this project would permit these families to establish connections with each other as well as prove or refute any speculation that they may have regarding the genetic paternity of slave ancestors. In the United States, there are also STREETER families of primarily African ancestry who acquired the STREETER surname during slave-holding times.Participation in this project would permit these families to establish connections with each other as well as prove or refute any speculation that they may have regarding the genetic paternity of slave ancestors.

In any case, all male STREETERs, regardless of race or ethnicity, are welcome and encouraged to participate. Female STREETERs do not inherit a Y-Chromosome from their fathers so they are not eligible to participate.

Project Background

The STREETER surname project was launched on 19 May 2003 by Perry Streeter. I am the President and a Life Member of The STREETER Family Association . I encourage STREETER descendants worldwide join; however, participation in the Y-Chromosome DNA STREETER Surname Project is not dependent on participation in the association.

Using an ethical and competent testing company, Family Tree DNA , we are creating a STREETER Y-DNA database. To collect a DNA sample, a simple, painless cheek-scraping kit is used instead of a blood test; the instructions are easy to follow.

I offer one caveatโ€”DNA testing can also reveal secret adoption, maternal infidelity or any โ€œnon-paternal eventโ€ (NPE) anywhere in a lineage, so any STREETER male testing his DNA should be prepared for the statistical possibility that he may not be a STREETER, genetically speaking.

Project Objectives

ยง Identify how many distinct STREETER families originated in Southeast England, particularly in the counties of Sussex, Surrey and Kent.

ยง Enable living STREETERs in England and around the world to identify their family of origin by comparing the DNA test results of those with unknown lineages to those with well-documented lines of descent.

ยง Determine whether or not any of the English STREETER emigrants to a given country were related to each other or not. The following English progenitors and emigrants are already by current project participants:

ยง Henry Streeter of Maresfield, Sussex, England

ยง Jarvis Streeter of Kent, England and New York

ยง Robert Streater of West Hoathly, Sussex, England and New Zealand

ยง Stephen Streeter of East Farleigh, Hunton, Kent, England

ยง Stephen Streeter of Goudhurst, Kent, England & Gloucester, Massachusetts

ยง Thomas Streeter of East Grinstead, Sussex, England & Steuben County, New York

ยง Thomas Streeter of Wisborough Green, Sussex, England

ยง William Streeter of East Grinstead, Sussex, England & Greene County, New York

ยง Other English STREETER emigrants that we would like to see represented in the project by living descendants include:

ยง Abel STREETER of Buxted, Sussex & Pennsylvania, USA

ยง Dr. Charles STREETER of London, England & Pennsylvania and Texas, USA

ยง Edward STREETER of England & Boston, Massachusetts, USA

ยง Edward STREETER of England & Virginia and the Carolinas, USA

ยง George STREETER of Shipley, Sussex, England & Elmira, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

ยง Henry STREETER of England & Lancaster, Erie County, New York, USA

ยง James STREETER of Hunton, Kent, England & New Zealand

ยง John Charles Streeter of England & North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada

ยง Joseph STREETER of England & Colden, Erie County, New York, USA

ยง Thomas STREETER of London, England & Barbados

ยง Join the project today to see your ancestor represented here!

Project Results

ยง We have confirmed the long-standing theory that William STREETER of East Grinstead, Sussex, England and Greene County, New York, USA was the nephew of Thomas STREETER of East Grinstead, Sussex, England and Steuben County, New York, USA. The earliest known ancestor in this family was Richard STREATER (d. 1764) of Dunnings Farm, East Grinstead, Sussex, England; he may have resided in Charlwood, Surrey, England prior to 1750.

ยง An American descendant of Richard STREATER of Dunnings Farm, East Grinstead, Sussex, England has matched on 35/37 markers with an English descendant of Henry STREETER of Maresfield, Sussex, England. The parishes of East Grinstead and Maresfield are adjacent.

ยง An American descendant of Jarvis STREETER of Kent, England and New York, USA has matched on 24/25 markers with an English descendant of Stephen STREETER of Hunton, Kent, England, confirming the latterโ€™s theory that Jarvis was a descendant of Stephen. This Stephen STREETER should not be confused with Stephen STREETER of Kent, England and Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA; test results indicate that these two progenitors, both named Stephen STREETER, were unrelated.

ยง Multiple descendants of Stephen STREETER of Kent, England and Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA have matched with each other and with another probable descendant, confirming the latterโ€™s descent from Stephen.

ยง Another known descendant of Stephen STREETER of Kent, England and Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA has matched with other known descendants; a one-step mutation may prove useful to descendants of Stephen who are still trying to determine their exact line of descent. Other one-step mutations are observed among those with 25 markers available for comparison.

ยง An English probable descendant of Thomas STREETER of Wisborough Green, Sussex, England has matched on 11/12 markers with the majority of the known descendants of Stephen STREETER of Kent, England and Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA.
