Snow tubing: dangerous thrill

Staff Writer

The Columbus Dispatch

BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio — It can be a chilly and bumpy rush, swooshing down a slope as the snow sprays into your face.

But snow tubing also can be hazardous, as illustrated by the death of a Chicago-area woman in an accident at the Snow Trails ski area near Mansfield.

Amanda Applegate, 28, of Elk Grove Village, Ill., died of blunt head trauma on Thursday, after she was injured at Snow Trails on Dec. 22.

She was injured when a group of tubers apparently went down a nontubing trail, went off an embankment and struck trees, according to news accounts.

Scott Crislip, Snow Trails’ business manager, said he could not comment on the circumstances of the woman’s death.

Snow Trails’ tubing “park” is separate from skiing areas and clearly marked with safety instructions and attendants who give reminders, Crislip said yesterday.

Snow tubing has boomed in popularity, with 44 percent of Midwest ski areas offering tubing trails or runs, said Troy Hawk, spokesman for the National Ski Areas Association.

“Resorts see it as a good, entry-level snow-sports experience. It doesn’t demand purchasing a whole lot of equipment and does not require training,” he said.

Cherie Newsome and her children made a trip from Hilliard to enjoy tubing yesterday at Mad River Mountain near Bellefontaine. She considers the activity safe. “There are people watching,” she said. “I’m not sure what else you could do.”

Workers at Mad River said they take every measure to ensure their guests are safe at Avalanche Tubing Park, which opened last year.

“The only thing you’re going to hit is the snow,” said Ashley Graham, the ski area’s marketing and events director.

Like Snow Trails, Mad River builds ridges of snow to separate tubing lanes. Mad River also uses mats at the end of lanes to slow tubers and thinks it has an ample staff to help keep riders safe.

Shawn Bauman of Kettering said yesterday’s trip to Mad River was his first time tubing with his kids. He said he was not concerned about their safety.

“We sort of assume they have taken care of all these things,” Bauman said.

Kris Blakeman of Kettering, Bauman’s mother-in-law, agreed: “I’m sure they’ve figured out every way to make it stupid-proof,” she said.

In the 2006-07 skiing season, 22 people died in accidents at ski areas, according to the National Ski Areas Association, of Lakewood, Colo.

Eighteen of those killed were skiers, two were snowboarders and the equipment used in two deaths was reported as unknown. News articles show that an 18-year-old woman died in a tubing accident at a New Hampshire ski area in April.

Both sledding and snow tubing can be hazardous for children and adults alike, said Dr. Kathryn Nuss, associate director of emergency medicine at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

The hospital saw more than 200 children last year with injuries from sledding or snow tubing, and about 20 required specialized trauma care because of blunt-force impacts, she said.

Most are injured when sleds or tubes strike trees or other fixed objects or are struck by other sledders or tube riders, she said. She recommends using a helmet and avoiding areas with trees, streets and ponds or other bodies of water.

Gaylord Opryland has an outdoor tent-covered ice tubing hill. The hill is 15ft. high and divided into five lanes. Your height needs to be at least of 42 inches if you want to ride the tube by yourself.

An adult can also carry a child under the age of three with him/her to enjoy the ride if the child t is 36 inches tall or above.

Out of all the spots I have mentioned in this article for snow tubing near Nashville TN, this one is the closest, only 12.8km from the central Nashville by road.

Jonas Ridge Snow Tubing Park

If you would like to spend a safe and fun family time snow tubing, then Jonas Ridge Snow Tubing Park is the place you should go to.

The facility is located in Newland, North Carolina, 300 miles away from Nashville TN. As you can derive from the name, this facility is exclusively for the purpose of enjoying snow tubing only.

One important fact to be noted about Jonas Ridge Snow Tubing Park is that no kids under the age of three can board the tubes. Also, they do not book in advance if it is not for a group of 15 people or more.

Travel Direction

It is best to rent a car and use I-40 E/I-65 S route if you want to go to Jonas Ridge Snow Tubing Park from the central Nashville TN. It is the fastest method and route.

You will need about 6 hours to reach there in this way. Good news is that you won’t need a parking fee for your car in Jonas Ridge Snow Tubing Park.

Ober Gatinburg

Ober Gatinburg is an amusement park and winter ski area located in Tennessee, having a road distance of 244 miles from Nashville city. The presence of an aerial tramway, alpine slide, ski slopes, amusement park, ice skating, wildlife, and picturesque scenery makes it the love of ice skaters and skiers.

Ober Gatinburg has a 300m long tubing park with an exciting 50m drop. The facility is safe enough for a four-year child to enjoy snow tubing. What a lovely and inspiring way to spend time with your family!

Travel Directions

You can reach there by multiple bus trips, or by car ride. I recommend that you take a bus for Atlanta – Marta Civic Center from Nashville. Reaching Atlanta, you can take the night bus to go to Greenville in three hours.

From Greenville, you should take the bus going to Asheville. And then you can hire a car to reach Ober Gatinburg.

If this method is too much messy for you, then you can also just drive the whole way by renting a car. Not only is this method faster, but also cheaper. You should follow this method if you know the directions thoroughly and are traveling in a group. But remember, the parking is limited.

Costing and Prices

How much will you spend depends mainly on your method of traveling and the choice of rides. The cost might go higher if you decide on staying in a hotel.

Generally, you will need to spend $4 to $8 per attraction. For snow tubing, it will cost $25 for a 90-minute session. I recommend considering the $120 unlimited premium wristband options and enjoying a worry-free all-day vacation.

Paoli Peaks

Paoli Peaks is a ski resort located in the heart of southern Indiana, 200 miles north of Nashville TN. This resort has been operating since 1978. It is built on a natural hill where it has 900 feet of elevation with 300 feet vertical drop. It has over 110 snowmaking machines to cover the ground in snow for a 24 hour basis.

Paoli Peaks is famous for its original midnight skiing sessions. If you are a skier, then you would love being in this place. And even if you are not a skier, I assure you that you will enjoy snow tubing in its 9-lane snow tubing area.

Travel Direction

The fastest route to reach Paoli Peaks is via I-65 N and I-165 route by car. You will need approximately 4 hours to reach your destination.

Costing and Prices

Paoli Peaks serves in a ‘first come first serve’ basis. The price of the tickets includes the use of the lanes, the tube, and the lift back to the top. No more than one person can sit in one tube but you can join the tubes is necessary (for children aged under 6 years). The ticket price for a 3-hour long session is $25 for an adult.

Pigeon Forge Snow

Like Paoli Peaks, Pigeon Forge Snow is also located 200 miles from Nashville TN. If you want to enjoy snow tubing without wearing the customary heavy warm clothing, then Pigeon Forge Snow is ideal for you. It is an indoor, all-year open facility where the indoor temperature is 60-70 degrees. The first such one in America!

Pigeon Forge Snow has a huge Snow Play area along with a whole hillside of snow tubing hills. As it is an indoor facility and the snow is made by machine, you would never need worrying about the weather of season for coming here. A great place for family fun time!

Travel Direction

If you want to go to Pigeon forge from central Nashville TN, then it is best that you use a car as the ride. You should journey via I-40 E route. With the usual traffic, you will need about 3 hours and 15 minutes to reach your destination.

Costing and Prices

You will need to pay $20+ per person for enjoying snow tubing in this facility. It is to be noted that children under 38-inches are not permitted to snow tube. But do not worry about sacrificing your time for babysitting as you can just let them play in the snow for $7.99 per 30 minutes.

Snow Tubing Equipments

Do not forget to arrange the necessary pieces of equipment before going snow tubing near Nashville TN. Although, to be honest, you will only need a functional inner tube to experience the joy of snow tubing.

Many use only the inner tubes of regular car or truck tires. But you can also use specially designed snow tubes used for snow tubing only, available in the market. Tubes made for snow tubing are made of more substantial gauge material.

Most of the snow tubes you can find in the market are of a donut shape, while some have just a solid dimpled center.

Compared to just any car or truck-tire inner tubes, they are considerably safer, designed in a way to enable smooth gliding over the snow and to resist the low temperature of snow.

So it is best to use a snow tube for enjoying snow tubing near Nashville TN. You can rent one from available stores if you do not want to buy one.

And don’t forget to wear a helmet for security purposes. Also, if you don’t want to freeze into becoming a Popsicle, then don’t forget to dress warm and carry hot drinks in a thermos. After all, you can’t enjoy snow tubing if you are frozen solid, right?

Safety Regulations

It is better to be safe than sorry. Although snow tubing is very easy and mostly safe activity, it is better to exercise caution. Accidents have no foreboding after all and no one can be too careful.

Following some simple precautions one can minimize potential damages. Just keep the following rules in mind and enjoy a worry-free snow tubing near Nashville TN.

Check the slope for possible barriers before starting sliding

Hold the tube tightly while gliding

Do not try to jump or perform tricks while snow tubing

Wear a safety helmet if possible

And now you are set for a safe snow tubing fun time.

Difference Between Skiing And Tubing

Is tubing a subset of skiing or is it an activity completely separate from skiing? Ski tourers have already started to feel the pinch with access increasingly being denied to summer ski touring routes due to their use for summer sightseeing tours on snowmobiles, but now they also risk seeing this unique way of enjoying nature taken away from them.

The reason is simple: people who engage in summer sightseeing tours on snowmobiles believe that tubing and skiing are one and the same activity.

In reality, however, tubing is a completely different activity from skiing. In order to illustrate this, we will summarize the basic differences between these two activities. Tubing consists of sledding down a hill inside a rubber tube.

Skiing, on the other hand, is an activity where participants use skis and poles to move across deep snow and icefields.

The form of this movement differs from skiing to skiing: ski touring requires backcountry gear such as climbing skins, snowshoes or skis with special bindings for randonnée, whereas alpine skiing is done on groomed trails with one’s own skis or a snowboard.

In both cases, people wear special boots and bindings that allow them to securely attach themselves to their equipment. Skiing also makes use of poles as a means of propulsion, but they are meant for balance more than anything else.
