SAY IT, MAKE IT, WRITE IT MATS – HOW TO USE THEM SIX DIFFERENT WAYS
Showing busy teachers how to use this FREE ready to print word work mat six different ways in your math and literacy centers in an Early Years classroom.
Teachers are busy people. I’m a teacher so I get it.
We all like to find resources for our classrooms that are useful and engaging and but are also easy to prep, set up and store when not in use.
Our ‘Say It, Make It, Write It’ word mats are one such resource.
Originally created to help my students practice their sight words during our l iteracy centre activities but l ike many of our printables, they can easily be used different ways making them an ideal resource for both the Early Years classroom and word work at home.

ONE PRINTABLE, SIX WAYS TO USE IT 1. PRACTICE SIGHT WORDS
These Say It, Make It, Write It word mats can, of course, be used to practice sight words or tricky words.
Some programs also refer to these words as high frequency words because they’re ones that we use most often in our writing. Allowing young children opportunity to practice reading and writing these words will help them become more fluent readers and writers.
One idea is to write the sight words onto cards or we love to use pop sticks for ours then add some magnetic letters for children to build the word themselves before writing it with some whiteboard markers .
We’ve used other tools like stamps, erasers letters, glass gems, LEGO, letter tiles and our rock alphabet in place of the magnetic letters.
Another favourite are our alphabet beads which get used constantly in our classroom and the children love them! You can use them instead of magnetic letters to make the words.

2. MAKE LETTERS
Of course, you don’t have to use letters. Why not use play dough!
For preschoolers, you can use these same mats to learn individual letters and the sounds they make.
Here we used our play dough to make the letter before writing it below. Obviously you’re not going to be concerned about writing the letter on the line at this stage like you would older children.
I’ve had this Leapfrog Alphabet Magnet set since my eldest was little and it’s still going strong! The children can put each letter in it and hear the letter name and sound it makes.
3. BUILD NAME RECOGNITION
The ‘Say It, Make It, Write It’ printable is also useful for helping younger children learn their names. One preschool has been using these as their check-in station.
15 Ways to Use Pop It Fidget Toys for Learning

Have you heard of Pop It fidget toys? They are so popular right now! My boys love them and they are excellent fidgets!
Did you know Pop Its are great learning tools? There are so many ways you can use it either in the classroom or at home for learning. Today I’m excited to share 15 fun ideas!
What Is a Pop It?
Before I share the ideas, let’s talk about what a Pop It is! This fidget toy is a silicone toy that is like reusable bubble wrap! You press a bubble and it pops. I do have to say, it’s much quieter than actual bubble wrap! It’s really fun and kind of addicting!
Where Can You Get Pop Its?
You can find them at Target, Walmart, Amazon, and other stores. If you want to check out the ones I have in the pictures, just click the words below.

Literacy Activities with Pop-It Fidget Toys
1. Alphabet Letters
Practice learning the alphabet! Sing the alphabet song as you pop each letter.
2. Sounding out words
Say a word, then pop a bubble for each phoneme. (Ex: c-a-t)
3. Spelling words
Practice spelling words by popping the letters. You will need to do simple words that don’t have any double letters. This would be great for kindergarteners.
4. Syllable Counting
Practice counting syllables in words. When kids divide words into parts or “chunks” it helps them with the process of decoding.
Say the word, and each time you say a syllable, pop a bubble! (ex: spi-der, win-dow, hos-pi-tal)
5. Word Awareness
Word awareness is simply your students’ ability to hear words as a unit of sound. Words are the largest units of sounds so it is the easiest of all the phonological awareness skills. To practice this, say a sentence and have the student pop a bubble for every word. (ex: I like to eat pizza.) This activity of kinesthetic learning is really helpful for children with weak phonological awareness.
Math Activities with Pop-It Fidget Toys
1. 100 grid
If you get a Pop-It with one hundred bubbles, you can make a 100 grid! If you don’t want to make your own, you can buy a pre-made 100 grid pop-it on Amazon! This is fabulous for number recognition, counting practice, and seeing patterns in math. Have your students pop the numbers as they count. This will help them count to 100! You can also have them count by tens by popping the far right column.
2. Odd and even numbers
Use the same Pop It (or a smaller one) to practice identifying odd and even numbers. I love how this shows a pattern and will help kids understand how odd and even numbers work.
3. Pop the Number
Take turns rolling a dice and popping that many bubbles. This is a great way to work on one-to-one correspondence and gives meaning to the number you roll. Keep taking turns popping bubbles until you run out!
4. Addition and Subtraction Practice
Practice addition or subtraction with a Pop It. Let’s say the problem is 2 + 2. Have the child pop two, then pop two more. Count to find the answer.
5. Multiplication Arrays
Create multiplication arrays with a Pop It. Just like drawing an array on graph paper, you do it the same way on the Pop It. (I love this for kinesthetic learners!) For the equation 2 x 3, you would pop two rows and three columns. Then you can see there are 6 popped and that is your answer.
More Activities With Pop Its
1. How fast?
This one is simply for fun. Time the child to see how fast they can pop the bubbles!
2. Word unscramble
One player chooses a word and pops the letters for that word. The other player looks at the letters they “popped” and tries to figure out the word. You’ll need to do simple words, like CVC words that don’t repeat letters.
3. Hangman
Use the pop it with the alphabet letters written on it. One person chooses a word and the other person tries to guess it. Play it just like a regular hangman game, but with every letter guess, pop the letter on the fidget toy.
4. Marble game
One person sets a marble on the backside of the Pop It. Flip it over and have the other person pop the bubbles until they find where the marble is.
5. Water beads
Place water beads in the bubble sections! This is fun for sensory play.
I’m sure there are many more ways to use Pop It fidgets! I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments!

Is Pop-Its also the latest kids craze where you live? It is the next best thing after fidget spinners, I suppose! Here are some fabulous Pop-It learning activities!
We all know that kids learn better when they are interested and engaged, right? Tap into their interests, even if it means you have to use the latest fidget toy! (Scroll down to see our Pop-it Challenge Cards)
How to Prepare the Pop-It
Write the alphabet letters on it with a permanent marker. (Do a number one too if you can, or write on the one side letters and the other side numbers.) Add an exclamation and a question mark too. TIP: You can give it a spray of varnish to make sure it does not rub off.
Letter Activities to do with the Pop-It
Use the prepared Pop-It and say all the letters while popping it one by one, going from a to z to work on Alphabetical Order.
Pop and spell words! CVC and CVCC/CCVC or Sight words that don’t have a repetitive letter will work best. (You can get a bunch of FREE CVC word cards on our FREEBIES page under the Literacy Category.) Or see our CVC Words Pack.
Find specific letters, or all the vowels, for instance.
Use the toy to show if a verbal sentence needs an exclamation or question mark.
Find the missing letter. Cover a letter with a marble, then ask the child to guess which letter is missing. Alphabetical order knowledge is at play here.
Maths Activities with the Pop-It
Count the numbers while popping it, forwards and backwards. Skip count in 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, etc.
Listen as someone else pops and count how many pops you hear(working on concentration, auditory awareness and counting).
Use a marble to hide a number. The child must guess which number is missing(using number order knowledge here). Hide a marble under the toy and guess where it is before counting and popping to “find” the place it is hidden.
Use a marble and toss it into inverted number holes. Before it lands, estimate where it is going to land. Or, call a certain number and try to toss it into that number hole.
Use two marbles and cover two numbers. First guess which numbers are missing and then add the numbers together. (Or subtract/multiply/divide)
So many fun ideas to use a Pop-It for learning! still have a fidget spinner, gathering dust? Use it for these fun Numeracy activities!

Have your Mac speak text that’s on the screen
On your Mac, press the specified keyboard shortcut (the default key combination is Option-Esc).
If text is selected when you press the keyboard shortcut, the selected text is spoken. Otherwise, available text items in the current window are spoken; for example, if Mail is the current window, an email message is read.
If you set the option to automatically show the controller, it appears onscreen when your Mac starts speaking. Use the controller to change the speaking rate, move forward or backward one sentence in the text, pause and resume speaking, or stop speaking.
