A legendary domain producing an extremely rare wine known throughout the world: the Musigny Grand Cru.
The wines of Domaine Roumier
The Domaine Roumier estate was founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier. It was then taken over at the beginning of the 1980s by Christophe Roumier who joined his father, Jean Marie Roumier. Covering nearly 12 hectares, the Georges Roumier estate is composed of limestone and clay-limestone soils. No chemicals are used once the vines have blossomed, but it is not certified as organic, as Christophe Roumier does not necessarily want to be certified as such. Located in the village of Chambolle Musigny, the Georges Roumier estate’s most famous neighbours are Domaine Comte de Vogue and Domaine Mugnier.
Five Burgundy Grands Crus are produced in Georges Roumier estate: Bonnes Mares, Musigny, Charmes Chambertin, Ruchottes Chambertin, and Corton Charlemagne in white wine. The most famous Grand Cru, the Musigny, is an iconic wine of Côte de Nuits because it is produced in infinitesimal quantities and is very unique, of a great pedigree, subtle and complex. In 2014, the Bonnes Mares wine revealed a splendid nose and an aftertaste full of complex notes, inspired fruit in brandy. This vintage received great reviews with a 17.5/20 mark from Bettane & Desseauve and 18.5/20 from Revue des Vins de France. Also for the 2014 vintage, the Ruchottes Chambertin is a beautiful wine, full of cherry and red fruit notes. It’s crispy and salty on the finish. On the First Growths side, the Chambolle Musigny Premier cru les Amoureuses stands out, according to RVF, with a great 18.5/20 mark. Same thing for Bettane & Desseauve with 18/20. The Domaine Roumier also produces a great Chambolle Musigny which, in 2014, showed soft tannins and a great freshness. It’s a delicate and smooth wine with character and depth.
The most famous vintages of the Georges Roumier estate are 2015, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2002.These are particularly good wines for ageing. The Corton Charlemagne is a point of reference in terms of Burgundy white wines. With the great mark of 17.5/20 from RVF in 2014, this wine offers a very spicy profile with the strength and typical power of other wines of the same terroir.

The origins of Domaine Georges Roumier date back to 1924 when he got married to a young woman, Geneviève Quanquin, whose family owned vineyards in Burgundy. Over the generations, this wine estate took its place among the greatest names of Côte de Nuits. The Domaine still belongs to the same family and is cultivated by Christophe Roumier, the founder’s grandson. This prestigious property produces wines renowned in the whole world, such as Bonnes-Mares, Chambolle-Musigny, Charlemagne Grand Cru and Ruchottes-Chambertin. And as the quantity of these famous Crus is quite limited, approximately one hectare for each of them, they are of high demand.
A 12 hectares vine grown with passion
This wine estate stands out from the crowd with its small surface (less than 12 hectares) and its rich heritage of old vines, planted under famous appellations. Indeed, the vineyards are planted in Chambolle-Musigny village, Côte d’Or, the Burgundy region. Christophe Roumier took over Domaine Georges Roumier in 1981 respecting the family tradition. He attaches great importance to the nature and does not use any chemical input. He also favors the old vines that he preserves and treats them with utmost care. Head of a world-famous Maison, he constantly supervises the quality of his wines, not depending on the vintage. All this results in complex, well-balanced Crus with long finish, allying lightness and intensity.

Domaine Georges & Christophe Roumier Musigny Grand Cru 2011
From its beginnings all the way up to the present, Domaine Georges Roumier has maintained one of the best reputations in Burgundy. Their superb wines are also amazingly dependable and consistent in quality. Georges Roumier began the enterprise in 1924 and operated it until his retirement in 1961, when the estate was divided among his children. After his death in 1965, his son Jean-Marie ran the domaine and made the wines. Adopting his father’s métier, Jean-Marie’s son Christophe became a talented winemaker as well, and bought out his uncles in 1992.
In the vineyard, Christophe Roumier prefers a high vine age and rigorous pruning, resulting in small yields. In the winery, all aspects of the Roumier vinification are completely traditional: a very warm, 18 day maceration, use of 25% new wood barrels (with a slightly higher percentage for the Grands Crus), and egg white fining. Since 1988 the domaine has discontinued the practice of filtration, and the entire cellar has been air-conditioned, allowing a 4-5 day pre-fermentation maceration of grapes.
Domaine Georges Roumier is one of the finest sources of classic, long-lived red Burgundies, with wines that demonstrate fruit, spice, and balance, with substantial tannins. Simply put, Roumier wines are brilliantly made. They are rich, fragrant wines with characteristic aromas of cherries and berries, and often need 4-5 years to show their great depth and harmony. They are also very long-lived, lasting up to twenty years.
