Christmas Mini Sessions: Ideas Families will ADORE!

Christmas mini sessions are a huge hit with families who celebrate the holiday! Make your photos extra-magical with tips from our pros.

Holiday mini sessions are perfect for every holiday, every season, and every kind of family. In this article, we’ll focus on Christmas mini session ideas!

What are Christmas Mini Sessions?

Christmas mini sessions are short holiday-themed photo shoots, with multiple clients booked back-to-back to maximize the photographer’s time, creativity, and profits. The mini session format allows families to get print-worthy pictures that are fun, fast, and less costly than booking a lengthy portrait session.

“Holiday sessions are an opportunity for families to spend time together while I’m creating beautiful images of them, capturing the love and real moments!” —Toronto portrait photographer Bruna Rico

Trendy Inspiration for Christmas Mini Sessions Outside

“I pick my mini session themes and props depending on current trends,” says photographer and educator Rebecca Rice. “Lately, red, vintage trucks are super popular, so my Red Truck Christmas Mini Sessions have been a best-seller!”

Where to Find Your Own Vintage Truck

If you want to go BIG and hop on the red truck trend, you might consider investing in a vintage truck, like Maine Tinker Photography did. “I use it every year!” owner and lead photographer Siobhan says.

#ShootProofPRO Tip:

The truck doesn’t even need to run if you’re only using it as a prop!

Instead of buying, you may want to rent a vintage vehicle from the owner. If your mini sessions are a financial success, you can consider a purchase later. But huge cars and trucks aren’t your only option!

Location Tips for Your Outdoor Christmas Mini Sessions

If you’re lucky enough to live in a snowy environment, any available park or wooded area will automatically spark holiday joy! Encourage your clients to dress warmly for the weather—and to keep their cars nearby so they can stay toasty until their session time.

#ShootProofPRO Tip:

Expose for the snow so you don’t blow-out the highlights!

Christmas tree farms

Elegant Inspiration for Christmas Mini Sessions Inside

Whether you own a studio space or rent one for the day, indoor spaces are a great choice if you want to avoid weather delays.

“My simplest holiday setup is a gray couch with a wreath hung over it. It was a hit! My clients loved how simplistic it was—and very tasteful.” —Rebecca Rice

When shooting inside, Austin, Texas, photographer Logan Fahey suggests that you establish a health and safety plan.

“Will you spray props down between sessions? Can you provide hand sanitizer? Will you be wearing a mask?” asks Logan. “Think about these things ahead of time, and make sure your clients know what precautions you are taking so they feel safe.”

Holiday Mini Session Posing Tips

A mini photo session is short by definition, so you’ll want to have a few go-to poses planned out in advance. Know where you’ll have people sit or stand, and prepare a space that works for even your largest family grouping.

Posing doesn’t have to be complicated, though. Bruna shares, “I like to pose my clients first, and then I ask them to tell each other jokes, give tickles, and share a big family hug!”

Be a Smart Scheduler

“I found my sweet spot for minis is to schedule 15-minute sessions back-to-back in a block of two to three hours,” says Rebecca. Don’t forget to add a five minute break between each session so you can sanitize, set-up, and rehydrate before your next family.

Christmas Mini Session Packages & Prices

“My minis include five digital images with a print release, and I up-sell the additional digital images,” explains Rebecca.

To further boost your profits, learn from The Blumes’ savvy approach. They incorporate a gently guided presentation that always results in exciting sales and earnings!

Easy Ideas for Christmas Minis Marketing

“Use a real family in your promo shots,” instructs Rebecca. “Your minis are way more likely to book if there’s a real family in your photo instead of just a picture of your setup!”

Reward some friends or past clients with a free mini session in exchange for their permission to use their images for advertising. Choose photogenic people who take instructions well so you get the best marketing photos possible. Remember: your goal is to entice new paying clients!

Market to as Many People as Possible

“Posting to your instagram and business Facebook pages isn’t enough,” Rebecca says. To get your mini sessions in front of a larger audience, consider these marketing tips:

post to local Facebook groups

purchase targeted ads on social media

email your list of previous clients and inquirers

partner with a local business who can help promote you (like the aforementioned Christmas tree farm)

A Sample Marketing Timeline

“Give yourself PLENTY of time to market!” Rebecca says—and we can’t agree more! For the ultimate results, your marketing timeline may look something like this:

August: choose your photography backdrops, design your family Christmas setup, and photograph your models

September: create your promotional materials and launch your marketing campaigns

October: photograph your mini sessions on one or more days

November: hold your virtual sales presentations so prints and Christmas photo cards can be delivered in time for the holiday

December: deliver your clients’ products and handwritten thank you notes

Sprinkle Some Extra Magic on Your Minis…

Logan makes her mini sessions extra special by giving each client a little gift bag.

“Throw in some candy canes, chocolates, and other fun treats!” Logan shares. “I also include a ‘next steps’ card that tells them when their ShootProof gallery will be ready, along with any other details they should know.”

If you want to organize the photos from your mini sessions into a single beautiful picture, take advantage of premade templates. These templates have special slots for photos and thematic designs with matching colors that will help you create a coherent look and grab the attention of an ever-increasing number of clients.

Arrange a scene similar to this one with a “Trick or Treat” sign, some pumpkins, and other thematic props that you’d typically use for a Halloween party. Add some candy to the shot and have the children pose in their costumes. You can also ask them to eat some candy during the session to take a couple of shots of the kids enjoying the sweets.

Halloween mini session ideas are all about witches, vampires, and other mystical creatures. If your models are children, then there’s no need to scare them with creepy locations. You can find a ton of child-friendly places that can be infused with the perfect amount of spook.

Arrange as many pumpkins as you want, bring in some hey barrels, and add rustic wood elements. You can also ask the subject to hold a small pumpkin as a prop, have some toddlers sit on a bunch of pumpkins, do some carvings, or use a wheel barrel as one of the main points of interest.

Pumpkin patches are a popular inclusion in many fall mini sessions ideas. However, before you jump on that trend, make sure to ask for permission from the owner of the farm unless you have one of your own.

Even if a couple doesn’t have kids yet, you can take some romantic photos of them during a barbeque. Such couple pictures will look great in any photo album and remind the happy lovers of their dating days. Couple picnic photoshoots are best scheduled during the evening.

One of the most popular summertime mini session ideas for families has them going on a picnic. A checkered blanket or tablecloth along with a picnic basket will help set a Provence-like atmosphere. Such mini sessions are best held during the first half of the day. You can experiment with both classic portrait poses and candid photos.

It’d be nice if you could pick a green outdoor location. Then you won’t even have to bring a lot of props. A simple wooden crate and some watermelons will do. Depending on the child’s age, you can ask them to interact with a watermelon slice or even eat it. Such photos will look natural and vibrant thanks to the contrasting colors.

The beach at sunset looks particularly romantic and atmospheric. Schedule the mini session in a way that encompasses the time between 8 and 9 p.m. Try to avoid using patterned or striped clothing. The clothing also shouldn’t feature huge logos or character drawings. Give preference to muted tones that direct the viewer’s attention to the faces and scenery.

This idea is suitable for both kids and adults but it’s a particularly popular choice for family photoshoots. Bring a ton of red, white, and blue props as well as some American flags and you’re bound to get some beautiful shots with an interesting color palette. Since it’s a summer holiday, you can organize the photoshoot in a park or during a camping trip.

If the weather is sunny and it’s not raining, then one of the most interesting spring picture ideas you can try is a thematic easter photo shoot with a bunny. Kids will have a blast taking such photos and they will become an unforgettable memory.

This kind of photoshoot is the perfect option if the weather doesn’t allow you to experiment with different outdoor Easter mini session ideas. It’s primarily aimed at children but you shouldn’t limit yourself by artificial boundaries. Decorate the studio with various flowers, baskets, easter eggs, and plush bunnies.

If your garden or a location nearby has Sakura trees, it can serve as a terrific option for a mini photoshoot of a mom with her kids. Sakura trees start to bloom at the end of March and last until the beginning of May. To avoid the risk of missing the blooming period, schedule the session during the first 2 weeks of April.

The first thing that comes to mind when you think about spring is blooming flowers so spring mini session ideas typically revolve around flowers. It’s impossible to pick a specific timeframe for when you should organize such a photoshoot since different flowers bloom at different times. Ideally, you should hold such a session in a botanical garden but if that’s not an option, look for a floral field somewhere in your area.

Another great idea for an indoor Christmas mini session involves writing a letter to Santa, with the subjects primarily being children. You shouldn’t have any trouble finding a small studio and decorating it with a Christmas tree and festive lights or can find a location that is already fully prepared for such photos. Add some props 6. Spring Mini Session in Flowers Gardenlike a Santa hat and get to work.

Such mini sessions outdoor Christmas photoshoot ideas require minimum effort and investment. They’re also perfect because not many people can withstand a full-length photoshoot during the cold winter days. You can pick any subjects you like for such photos, be it a couple, an entire family, or a single person. It’s advised to schedule the session in a spruce forest during the first half of the day and before the golden hour.

Mini sessions with Santa are in the same high demand they have been for decades now, which isn’t a surprise given that he is one of the main characters of the Christmas season and is adored by millions of kids. Such a photoshoot is aimed at children of any age and can be organized either in an improvised Santa residence or outdoors. If you live in an area that doesn’t get any snow, you can organize the meeting in a mysterious forest and add some snow during post-processing.

They can drink hot chocolate, go through all the decorations, build a snowman, and much more. Family photo ideas like this one can be implemented both outdoors and indoors during any time of the day, although it is recommended to use natural lighting.

When it comes to wintertime mini session ideas, none is more popular than Christmas tree decoration. You don’t necessarily have to limit yourself to just one action though. If you’re tired of using the same-old poses you see everywhere, take photos of family members being engaged in some sort of activity.

Mini sessions are a great option for photographers who want to boost their income in minimum time. To make sure you pick the optimal option, check out this list of mini session ideas while accounting for the time of year and popular themes that are mentioned in this article.

After doing mini sessions for three years she shared the biggest learnings with doing mini sessions.. (Check out the download with this blog post for year-round mini session ideas).. I have included a couple of her tips in the email templates that come with the mini sessions workflow inside ShootZilla and in the free download with this blog post.. Always a valuable vault of information and in the case of mini sessions, she mentions the biggest mistakes you can make.. Don’t underprice your mini sessions since even if you only shoot for 15-30 minutes, you still go through your whole workflow.. You don’t give them a reason to book a full session with you.. So when you did your pricing right and kept your fees at 2/3rds of a full session, upgrading to a full session is not a huge step for clients.. Make your mini sessions profitable.. Clients should not be able to book these mini sessions year-round with you, the time limitation and theme scarcity is part of why mini sessions can be selling easier than normal sessions.

Mini sessions are not your regular sessions at a discount.. Understand how mini sessions work Mini sessions are very simple in how they work and they are not meant to be like your full sessions.. If you want to add additional profit to your mini sessions, you can offer them more images and products after their mini session at an additional cost.. If you want to add additional profit to your mini sessions, you can offer them more images and products after their mini session at an additional cost.. Outside of popular holidays and seasons, you may profit from specific sessions that are more creative, such as mermaid mini sessions or utilizing Photoshop and creative overlays (such as adding butterfly overlays for a butterfly mini session) in your mini sessions, these can help fill in your slower times.. Choose your dates and time frame Next you need to decide what dates and times you are going to offer your mini sessions.. If they enjoy your session a lot, it’s these clients who will see your next mini session theme and think about booking them also – or recommending them to their friends.. Be sure to have these new mini session clients sign up for your email newsletter so you can keep them up to date on your future sessions.

Many photographers simply post about their mini sessions on Facebook and don’t use any other method of getting the word out and they just don’t book as many sessions as they want.. While there’s nothing wrong with using Facebook, this should not be your only method of marketing to clients.. Mini Sessions can be a great way to get new clients in the door, but you have to be careful not to simply attract deal seekers who aren’t the kinds of clients that you really want to have for your business.. So, instead, you need to make sure that you’re appealing to your ideal client and not simply using mini sessions to compete on price with other photographers, because that will never benefit your business.. Themed mini sessions that are only available on a certain day are a great way to get people to book.. Because there’s so much more to this than just editing and shooting, I’d recommend putting your mini-session price around 2/3rds of your normal session price.. It’s really great business to give your client more than you say you will and surprise them with the extras.. But with mini-sessions, it hurts your chances of getting them to book a full session later if you over-deliver too much.. You still get the mini session.. If you give them all the digital images as part of the mini-session price, they have absolutely no motivation to buy anything else from you and you’ll only make the initial mini session fee you charged.. When they book their mini session, take the time to book their in-person viewing and ordering session at the same time.. First, you’re not telling them about the other products and services they get when they book a full session with you or explaining the benefits of the full session as opposed to the mini session.. The best way to turn these clients into repeat clients is to put them into a client email list and be marketing to them regularly.

Whether you are hosting your first mini session or trying to figure out how to make the most of your minis, follow my 5 steps to successful minis for a foolproof way to not only bring in a little bit of extra income, but to build your business too.. The package includes the 20 minute stylized session in a stunning outdoor location, one 11×14 print and a few 5×7’s.. However, you can only get a certain number of sessions in before you’re all out of light.. You need to make sure you know the lay of the land, and what the light looks like during the hours you’ll be shooting.. Clients love it because they have their own entrance and place to park and play.

Mini sessions are preset photo shoots at a lower cost than a full session.. Event mini sessions are when a photographer partners with an event or some kind of business and hosts the session there.. Mini sessions with the purpose of introducing new clients to your photo shoots.. The benefit of mini sessions is that you plan just one day and every session adheres to your plan without any change!. To plan a mini session, first, figure out what kind of session you plan to do.. But with regard to how mini sessions are priced, you shouldn’t base their quote off of your full session price.. Once you’ve figured out a general idea of how much you need to put out of your own pocket to make a mini session happen, determine the time of each session.. In order to book mini session clients, you have to market the event !. Clients will wait or expect mini sessions exclusively instead of wanting to book a full session.. Mini sessions are quick professional snippets and cannot be compared to a full session.. Whether or not mini sessions are a waste of time or a valuable extra depends entirely on how well you put a mini session event together.

But why are they good for clients?. Why should someone book a mini session with you?. Special time frame – is this at a time or day, week, or year you don’t typically book a full session?. Your mini sessions need to be at least one of these categories to help ensure the urgency of booking.. However if you are promoting a special scene or stylized mini session, here’s what you need to keep in mind:. Props After deciding on a theme, begin creating a list of props you will want to have.. I practice shooting the set to get a feel for what is missing, if the scale of the objects is appropriate, and to know how to maximize the potential poses within my set.. Many times when I practice with some of the props I plan to use, new ideas are sparked after seeing kids have a great time with it all.. Not only do these practice shots ensure my set up will work for me, but it gets a list going for me on how I will use the space and objects to bring personality and fun to the session.. While you may not have the entire set ironed out when you do your practice session, it’s the perfect opportunity to get some key shots that will give your potential clients a feel of what their images will look like come session time!. However you decide to shoot and advertise your mini sessions, the key is making sure it conveys the feeling of what your mini session client can expect the day of!. If you are looking to do family mini sessions, make sure your price, time frame, and props accommodate families.. Props that are too small or for the wrong age group will result in less than impressive images.. Price Your session fee will vary based on what you are offering, and the area you live in.

I really enjoy mini sessions and for me they are a great way to acquire and keep existing clients while being profitable for the photographer.. When to have mini sessions?. The most popular time to do mini sessions is predictably around a Holiday, which is when I alway scheduled minis my first two years in business.. I try once or twice a year to offer mini sessions that are not based around a Holiday.. I also personally think a huge benefit to off season mini sessions are larger sales, especially if you sell prints with your minis.. -your time: time to design the minis, email clients, travel, shoot, edit and deliver final images. Remember- the goal of mini sessions (and being in business, in general) is to make a profit!. Also keep in mind, you want to transform these mini clients into clients who will book a full session.. Not only is this difficult, it takes a lot of email time if you have quite a few mini clients.. You have a similar issues- in that if you offer a set “x” amount of images and allow the clients to choose from the gallery, clients often want a couple more images or have a hard time choosing.. This is hit or miss, though, because in minis a lot of the images tend to be similar so sometimes clients don’t feel the need to purchase them all.. In minis especially, it’s important that they are relaxed at the session, even if it’s a kids only session.. In my first couple of years I would get very hurt if I saw a client chose another mini session over mine.

If your minis were taking place in the studio before and outdoor sessions are a novelty for you, then take some time to prepare for this new surrounding. Watch this video created by Silver Paw Studio and see how Monique prepares for her outdoor mini-sessions and what advice she gives to other photographers:

2. USE LESS PROPS – EASIER TO CLEAN AND SANITIZE

One of the tips from your fellow photographers on keeping your workspace safer for your clients and yourself is using less props than you would normally use. Choose props that are easy to clean, wash and sanitize in between sessions. Clean and simple setup doesn’t neccesarily mean boring. Sometimes less is more, so browse through your props and check what is and what is not essential to create a proper atmosphere and stick to the theme of your mini session.

3. GO ONLINE

The situation we’ve all been put in right now is making the world switch to online and automated solutions. If you’ve been reluctant to implementing such solutions to your business before, now it’s the time to catch up. Try to arrange as many aspects of your sessions with clients online, before you meet, to avoid unnecessary interactions. You can create a blog post, pre-written messenger or email text describing the session’s protocol or record a video and post it on your social media. There are online tools that will help you manage your bookings. Among those recommended by photographers are:

https://usesession.com/

https://www.photobiz.com/

There are many other online tools that will help you promote your minis online. For example, you can create a Facebook event on your fan page.

We have prepared a separate blog article to thoroughly present possible ways of promoting your mini-sessions online including a complete checklist for promotion.

4. KEEP THE DISTANCE

Social distance is one of the ways to protect yourself and people around you from the eventual infection and is practiced by many photographers who are now back to their usual business. Require the same from your visitors in order to protect yourself as well. Among other practices adopted by photographers are: wearing a mask, taking temperature before the session, no snack and beverages served to the clients during the sessions . In addition, you may consider adding touch-free payment options to your business as well.

5. INFORM YOUR CLIENTS ABOUT THE SAFETY MEASURES YOU ARE TAKING

Once you created a plan for implementing proper steps to keep your mini-sessions safe, it’s time to inform your clients about the measures you are taking in order to protect them. Make you clients aware that safety is your number one priority. Educate your clients about the fact, that as a photographer you have tools to operate safely and that there is no need to resign from something as important as creating and capturing important memories with their loved ones.

Have a look at the video created by Zoom Photography Studio where Guy and Anna present how their studio is being sanitized between appointments.

Remember, if you are putting a lot of effort in protecting your clients from germs during photo sessions, don’t keep this fact for yourself. Create a blog post, social media post, infographic, a video or choose any other way to let your clients know you are looking after them and that you keep your workspace a safe environment for them and for yourself as well.

6. MAKE UP FOR THE LOST REVENUE WITH PHOTO PRODUCTS

Or if the slowdown in bookings didn’t impact your business you can still increase your revenue even more with print products.

“Mini sessions are best done with a theme. This way you don’t have to produce a lot of different photos for clients as you also have limited time. For my mini sessions, I love to include the Triplex as a product. You can easily get 3 different photos to include in a Triplex. They are a great gift option for family members like grandparents. I also do offer matted prints which serve as extra gifts too.” – Tharwa Said Photography

Family Christmas teepee session in Roseville CA

A time before Christmas is always busy for family photographers. To send Christmas cards is a very popular tradition, and many families send them. If you want to start sending cards before Christmas too and to hire a professional photographer for a family session, please don’t forget to add time for retouching images, ordering and printing cards, and delivering them to your relatives and friends by mail. And don’t forget to book your session before because many photographers can be occupied. This amazing family entrusted me with doing their Christmas photo shoot again, and their shooting session was carried out in pajamas. This wonderful family entrusted me twice with taking 1birthday photos of their nice son and a family session last Christmas too. This year they decided to choose pajamas, and they informed me about their idea. I started thinking about outdoor family photo session in pajamas, decided to use a teepee for the session, and turned to the Christmas theme with wreath, pillows, and stockings. Then we also added some food props from my Christmas tree farm mini session. They brought their own stockings, and thus, we completed the environment. Richard, their boy, was happy, as it had been during his 1and 2birthday session. He enjoyed chocolate cookies, listened to Christmas book stories with pleasure. We even thought over a possibility for him to send his Christmas wishes to Santa with the help of Santa mailbox.
