One More Move. The Story. What Is At Stake?

โ€œCheckmate.โ€ Painting by Moritz Retzsch

(German painter) Two protagonists are facing each other across the chessboard. On one side of the painting is the enemy and on the other side is a young man. The young man thought he was losing. His soul was at stake (Moritz Retzsch was fascinated by Faust). An angel watches over the young man. The chessboard represents our human struggles, defeats, victories, course correction, and achievements. The spider entering the set toward the young man is getting ready to set a trap. Is there no hope? One day a chess master looks at the painting hanging in the Louvre Museum. He studies the arrangement of the pieces left on the chessboard. Suddenly he realizes that the situation is not hopeless. The enemy can be defeated. “Not Checkmate!” The King has one more move. The young man will win and be Saved. What do you see (feel) in this painting?

The King has One More Move!

The King Has One More Move!

Two men stand staring in front of a painting in an art gallery. In the painting, a man is playing chess with the devil. The devil is grinning ear-to-ear because he has the man cornered. The title of the painting, โ€œCheckmate,โ€ indicates that the game is over. The devil has won. His opponent has failed. He has no more moves.

The first man looking at the painting wants to move on to view other paintings in the gallery. But the second man, an international chess champion, wants to look at the painting longer, so he waves his friend on and tells him he will catch up later. The chess champion stares and stares at the chess board, then suddenly he steps back, flabbergasted. โ€œItโ€™s wrong!โ€ he exclaims. โ€œThereโ€™s one more move.โ€ He runs to his friend and together they look at the painting. โ€œWe have to contact the painter,โ€ the chess champion says. โ€œItโ€™s not checkmate. The King has one more move!โ€

Throughout the Bible, this game has been played: The Israelites found momentary freedom only to face the formidable Red Sea with Pharoah and his armies in hot pursuit. The King had one more move! Daniel was lowered into den full of hungry lions for defying a tyrant and standing up for his faith. The King had one more move! A 9 ft. tall fighting champion named Goliath called for a winner-take-all, one-on-one fight to settle the war. A little shepherd boy took him on. The King had one more move! Jesus was tortured, crucified, and buried for 3 days. But the King had one more move!

Ever feel like life has you beat?

The King has One more Move!

Ever feel like Satan has you trapped?

The King has One more Move!

Ever feel like a failure? Like youโ€™re out of options? Like youโ€™ve lost hope?

Jesus, the King has One more Move!

Tell me your story! How has the King moved in your life?

[picture is probably that of Friedrich Moritz August Retzsch on Goetheโ€™s Faust (above); Louvre Museum in Paris, France; story has been told by numerous speakers, the oldest reference I could find is from Billy Graham in 1955. More recently, Bishop Ken Ulmer]

A Closer Look at โ€œCheckmateโ€

If you know anything about the game of chess, you know it all comes down to when the King on either side can move no more. Once the king is trapped, the winning side declares โ€œcheckmateโ€ and the game is over.

There is a painting that once hung in the Louvre museum in Paris, painted by Friedrich Moritz August Retzsch. Today, the painting is popularly known as โ€œCheckmate.โ€ It is now in private hands, having been sold in a Christieโ€™s auction in 1999.

The painting depicts two chess players. One is Satan, who appears arrogantly confident. The other player is a man who looks forlorn. If Satan wins, he wins the manโ€™s soul. You can view more of the creepy details below.

The Chess Grandmasterโ€™s Discovery

According to legend, and probably fact, the story goes like this. A chess grand master came upon this intriguing painting in the Louvre museum alongside other famous art such as the Mona Lisa.

The grand mastered stared a long time at the chess board in the painting and finally noticed something surprising. The typical interpretation of the painting (that the devil had the man in โ€œcheckmateโ€) was incorrect.

Though the devil seemed to be the obvious victor, he was in fact not winning. The man, who thought he was losing, was actually winning.

According to the arrangement of the pieces left on the chess board, his king had one more move. This fateful move would make him the winner of the game.

The grand master called the curator and determined that the title โ€œCheckmateโ€ did not fit the scene because the forlorn-looking player actually had the ability to defeat his opponent, though he didnโ€™t realize it yet. His king had one more move.

The Spiritual Implications

Now think about the spiritual implications of this painting with me about what the grand master discovered.

Repeatedly in Scripture, God assures his people that there is always a way of escaping situations that seem hopeless at the time.

When the people of Judah were deported to Babylon because of their sinfulness, God revealed that a future day of release would come.

were deported to Babylon because of their sinfulness, God revealed that a future day of release would come. Just as God provided water for the Israelites in the desert, he would also provide for them on their long trek homeward.

for the Israelites in the desert, he would also provide for them on their long trek homeward. A little boy in John 6 only had two fish and a few loaves of bread to feed thousands of people. It looked like checkmate, but our King had another move left! They collected 12 baskets of leftover food after the meal was served.

They collected 12 baskets of leftover food after the meal was served. In the Old Testament, Daniel was thrown into a den of hungry lions. It looked like checkmate, but our King had another move left and Daniel remained safe.

So often in life, we consider the world to be a mess. With war, violence, a deadly pandemic, unemployment, struggling marriages, depression, isolation, and more โ€ฆ we can easily become disillusioned. People begin to feel lost. We look for direction but often end up on the wrong path. It looks like checkmate, but we need not fearโ€”the game is not over.

Our Creator God still has one move left! Our lives and future are in His hands. The Lord is the only King who can never be defeated.

The King Has One More Move โ€“ Sermo Humilis

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Two men are walking through an art gallery admiring a famous painting by Friedrich Moritz August Retzsch called, โ€œCheckmateโ€. In the painting, a man is playing chess with the devil. The devil is grinning ear-to-ear because he has the man cornered.

The title of the painting, โ€œCheckmate,โ€ indicates that the game is over. The devil has won. His opponent has no more moves.

The first man looking at the painting wants to move on to other paintings in the gallery. But the second man, an international chess champion, wants to look at the painting longer, so he waves his friend on and tells him he will catch up later.

The chess champion stares and stares at the chessboard, then suddenly steps back, flabbergasted.

Nietzsche, Randi, Harris, Lennon, Stalin, Gervais, Jimmy Carr, Dawkins, Hegel and Bertrand Russell. What do all these famous thinkers have in common? They all predicted or announced the death of God or Christianity.

This is nothing new. Ever since Adam bit the apple our world has had those willing to stand up and declare some kind of victory.

But such bold statements have never bothered the Church or the Christian. Why?

Of all the people who should be freaking out and drowning their sorrows in inebriating and mind-numbing intoxication, it should be those who have a firm and fixed belief in the terrifying realities laid out in the Bible.

Realities that affirm that we live in a dangerous world, that we are vulnerable, frail and weak, and that we die. Realities that also affirm the final judgment and an eternal afterlife.

And yet, such people are among the happiest, healthiest people. They also tend to enjoy the longest lifespan and are less likely to flounder in destructive escapist lifestyles or final despair than the general population.

Add to that the fact that followers of Jesus are among the worldโ€™s most persecuted people group, and one wonders how they even get out of bed.

Faced with the same real, everyday problems as everybody else in the world, and then some, the Christian man or woman continues to stand and flourish. How is this possible?

โ€œCheckmateโ€, said the scribe to the Pharisee as they watched Jesus, the King of the Jews breathe His last on the cross outside Jerusalem.

But the King had one more move.

The Christian can still get out of bed, and even sing because, in addition to the realities of human frailty, we also affirm the reality of a God who always has one more move. A God who knows how to come back from the dead and who knows how to raise us up from the dead also.

โ€ฆONE MOVE LEFT! โ€“ Tony Anthony

Chess is by far my favourite board game of all.

It isa two-player strategy board game played on a checkered board with 64 squares arranged in an eight-by-eight grid. Each player begins the game with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. Each of the six piece types moves differently, but the King is the most important piece of all.

The main object of the game is to trap the opponentโ€™s king so that its escape is not possible, because when he is trapped his whole army loses. If a playerโ€™s king is threatened with capture, it is said to be in check, and the player must remove the threat of capture on the next move. If this cannot be done, the king is said to be in checkmate, and the side that is checkmated loses.. Although the king is the most important piece, it is usually the weakest piece in the game until a later phase, the endgame.

An intriguing painting was once displayed at the Louvre art museum in France called โ€œCheckmateโ€, painted by Friedrich Moritz August Retzsch. It is now said to be in private hands after being sold at Christieโ€™s in 1999. This painting depicts 2 chess players, one is Satan whom appears arrogantly confident, and the other player is a man who looks forlorn. If Satan wins, he gets the manโ€™s soul.

According to legend, a chess champion visited the museum once and after studying the painting, noticed that the arrangement of the chess pieces were incorrect. According to him, the devil who thought he was winning, was in fact not winning. The man, who thought he was losing, was winning, because according to the pieces left on the chessboard, his king had one more move left, which would make him the winner of the game!

He called the curator and they determined that the title didnโ€™t fit the scene because the forlorn-looking player actually has the ability to defeat his opponent, though he obviously doesnโ€™t realize it. The painting is a lie. His king can still make another move!

Isaiah assured the people of Judah that God always provides a way of escape. Although they would be deported to Babylon because of their sinfulness, Isaiah prophesied that a future day of release would come when they would have to leave hurriedly. But they wouldnโ€™t have to worry. Just as God had provided water for the Israelites in the desert, He would also provide for them on their long trek homeward.

Many of us have experienced situations that appeared hopeless. We saw no way out, but we prayed and God opened a way. He made that โ€œimpossibleโ€ move. We can trust Him. He can never be checkmated. God is the only King who can never be defeated.

A little boy with two fishes and a few loafs of bread, sees that thousands of people needs food. It looks like checkmate, but it is a lie, our King has another move left! They collected twelve baskets of leftovers afterwards! (John 6:1-14) God is the only King who can never be defeated.

Daniel gets thrown into a lionโ€™s den full of hungry lions. It looks like checkmate, but it is a lie, our King has another move left! (Daniel 6) God is the only King who can never be defeated.

The woman about to be killed by angry men with stones. It looks like checkmate, but it is a lie, our King has another move left! He tells her to go and not sin anymore. (John 8:1-11) God is the only King who can never be defeated.

The criminal next to Jesus on the cross thought it was the end, yet he still repented. It looks like checkmate, but it is a lie, because the King has a move left and says: Today you will be in Paradise with me. (Luke 23:39-43) God is the only King who can never be defeated.

On Good Friday the people were screaming: Crucify Him! They mocked and hit the Lord Jesus, spit and tortured Him and nailed Him to the cross. They said He could save others, but not Himself. It is over. Checkmate. Satan smiles as everybody leaves thinking God is dead. But the Lord Jesus still has a move left! Come Sunday and Jesus rose from the dead! Our King had another move left! God is the only King who can never be defeated.

So often in life, we consider everything in the world to be a mess, with countries at war, people being killed, violence surrounding us, people losing their jobs, marriages getting destroyed, moral values are non-existent. We can easily become disillusioned and feel lost. We look for direction but end up on the wrong path. It looks like checkmate, but it is a lie, do not fear, the game is not over.

Our Creator God still has one move left! Our lives and future are in His hands. You have been bought with His blood โ€“ a very expensive price, and received amazing grace. He will be coming back one dayโ€ฆ.He still has one move left!

โ€œHe himself bore our sinsโ€ in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; โ€œby his wounds you have been healed.โ€ For โ€œyou were like sheep going astray,โ€but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.โ€ (1 Peter 2:24-25)

Our Creator God is the only King who can never be defeated.
