Olay’s electromagnetic face wand turns skincare into a mobile game

Olay’s FaceNavi Smart Wand isn’t a magic solution for perfect skin, but it is pretty fun. The Smart Wand is a handheld device that uses electromagnetic pulses to transform a singular Olay face cream into a multi-use product, able to treat puffiness, wrinkles, sagging, discoloration, uneven skin and other conditions in one fell swoop.

In an ideal situation, I’d use the Smart Wand at home as part of my bedtime skincare routine, after washing away my makeup. However, that wasn’t about to happen in the middle of a crowded convention hall at CES, so I tested the wand without the washing or the cream.

The process starts on the Olay Skin Advisor mobile app — enter your name and birth year, and snap a selfie. The app asks if you have any areas you’re particularly concerned about (dark circles, sagging skin, wrinkles, etc.), and then tells you how old your skin looks. I’m 30, and I’m fairly pleased to report the app read my skin as 28 (with makeup on, that is).

The app itself uses machine learning to read each face and pop out an accurate reading of age and problem areas. An Olay representative assured me the system doesn’t lowball or highball estimated ages to give users a shot of endorphins or send them on a shame-induced spending spree. It’s all in the algorithm.

The Skin Advisor app then opens up in selfie mode, but this time with AR stickers. Spots of color appear on your face, indicating specific issues. Here’s where the cream and the wand come in: Slather your face in the associated Olay cream, pair the wand with your phone, and get to work. Pressing the metal slope of the wand to your face makes it vibrate slightly; as you swipe it over different color zones, the electromagnetic pulses change, making the cream react with your skin in different ways. On-screen, the color blocks fade as the wand hits them, little stars shooting out to indicate a job well done.

Olay’s goal with the Smart Wand is to replace a half dozen creams, balms, scrubs and sprays that some people use at the end of the day. I’m not sure if it actually accomplishes this goal, but using the wand is satisfying, and its subtle vibrations are soothing. In the worst case scenario, the FaceNavi Smart Wand is fairly calming and indulgent, if not downright fun, to use.

Olay’s FaceNavi Smart Wand Offers Targeted Beauty Treatments

Olay is showing its FaceNavi Smart Wand at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show as a valuable gadget that has the potential to save people time and money on their skincare routine.

The device itself makes the most of electromagnetic technology and works with the Olay Skin Advisor mobile app to personalize and optimize skincare. The wand is designed to drive specific ingredients into the skin and target areas of concern—for instance, Olay has demonstrated that the skincare wand may be used to push peptides into the skin and target visible pores with niacinamide if perfecting the tone of one’s skin is the desired outcome.

As indicated by the turnout at CES 2019, the Consumer Electronics Show is quickly becoming a destination for beauty brands that are looking to break into the beauty-tech space.

Olay showcases how tech can help you get better skin

It had been a long day, but I could still barely contain my excitement as a fancy car whizzed me down the interstate to a race track on the outskirts of Las Vegas, one chilly evening before the start of the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show.

While the in-seat back massage made me wish the ride was longer, I also couldn’t wait to get there. Tonight would be my first time in an e-Tron, Audi’s new fully electric SUV, and my first taste of what Audi calls the future of mobility, one with entertainment content at its center.

It’s an interesting proposition, one I’m more than willing to chew on. With self-driving vehicles on the horizon, tonight, instead of getting behind the wheel, I take a back seat, put on a VR headset, and trade my current reality for one that promises to be more exhilarating.

Called “Rocket’s Rescue Run,” it’s the first title in a collaboration between Marvel and Disney and Audi’s new spin off venture Holoride, that aims to make VR entertainment a mainstay in cars of the future.

As the e-tron’s driver steps on the accelerator, in my alternate universe my ship surges through space. I’m joined by my sidekick Rocket Raccoon, and together we team up to help Iron Man take down a mob of Thanos’ space goons.

I’ve had many VR experiences before, but none like this. As soon as the SUV pulls away, the whole experience makes perfect sense. Every twist, every sharp turn, every bit of acceleration or sudden brake is matched by the same sensation in the game. For the entire 5-minute ride, my body is tricked into believing this reality. Not an easy feat for an utterly nitpicky tech journalist, I can only begin to imagine how big of a technical challenge it was to pull off.

I wield my laser gun like a pro, take down an evil mothership, and celebrate our victory with fireworks. The experience ends, and the e-tron stops. Reluctantly, I take off my headset. It feels like I’ve just been on a theme park ride, but from the privacy of my own car — well, not really, but I wish — and without standing in an hour-long line. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that during my adventure the e-tron reached speeds of up to 90mph. We’ve navigated plenty of sharp turns, too, but I don’t feel so woozy.

Supposedly matching the car’s movements to the virtual reality experience helps in mitigating nausea. As I get out, I thank my driver, but also can’t help but imagine a world that’s driver-optional.

At CES, we saw Audi’s vision of the future, a concept car called the Aicon, with an interior that resembles more of a lounge than a current automobile. As with Holoride, the development of Aicon represents a shift in the idea of mobility, one that’s ushered in by a focus on passengers instead of drivers. Together, Aicon and Holoride make perfect sense in a future world of fully autonomous vehicles. If no one is driving, what else are we to do?

Anything you want to, apparently. Cars are now seen as multi-purpose spaces, just another room that we occupy as we travel from place to place: be it a relaxation pod, a meeting room, or your own private cinema.

The team behind Holoride is most invested in the latter, creating entertainment experiences that are just long enough to fill the entire duration of your trip. They’re calling it “elastic content,” VR games and adventures that automatically adjust to congestion and shortcuts, so that you’re never left without something to occupy you.

“Together, Aicon and Holoride make perfect sense in a future world of fully autonomous vehicles.”

Soon, Holoride plans to open its technology to more car manufacturers, content creators, and game developers. The goal is for a wide range of immersive experiences, customized to events in the real world like traffic jams or stop lights, and for those experiences to be available in more car brands. Apart from games, like the one I played, the company is also planning movies, interactive features, and educational tours. Indeed, the type of content you could enjoy is limited only by the imagination.

A few minutes later, I find myself getting another back massage inside another chauffeured Audi A8, making our way back into downtown Las Vegas. These days, when I do travel by car, the experience is similar to this, albeit less fancy. I’m bored, maybe antsy or impatient, in the back seat, with only my phone and social media to distract me. I hadn’t given it much thought till today, but in a world where one constantly thirsts for something to capture one’s attention, I can certainly see how “content will be a major driving force for the mobility experience of the future.”

The day is almost over and I am exhausted. I recline my chair, close my eyes, and enjoy the back massage for a few minutes more. I dream I am back in the e-tron, and wonder when this future will arrive, what it would be like if the next Avengers movie was interactive, and most importantly, what it would be like to watch it from the back seat of a fully autonomous Audi.

Olay FaceNavi Smart Wand ile cilt bakımı oyuna dönüşüyor

Güzellik endüstrisindeki teknolojik oyuncaklar her geçen gün artıyor.

Tech is beauty, or perhaps beauty is tech, but whichever way you frame it, it’s no longer enough to rub cream into your face at night. Now, if you can’t maintain a beauty regime without using a plug-in device, does it really count? That’s why Olay is…

Olay launches series of personalized beauty tech innovations at CES 2019

P&G-owned Olay is at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this week announcing a host of products and services that aim to create a more personalized skincare experience for consumers.

The brand is announcing three major updates to its existing Olay Skin Advisor service that launched in 2016, as well as Olay Labs, a personalized software and beauty regime service, and the Olay FaceNavi Smart Wand, a beauty tech device that provides diagnostic skin treatments.

Olay Skin Advisor

Olay’s Skin Advisor

The Olay Skin Advisor initially launched as a low-tech solution to beauty recommendations which simply asked users to answer a short questionnaire online and upload a selfie. The newly updated version, currently rolling out only in the US, introduces the Olay Future You Simulation, the Olay Whips Simulator, and the Skin Decoder features.

The first allows users to visualize what their skin and face will look like in the future through different scenarios (such as daily SPF use or no SPF) to help them make better decisions on how to personalize their regime in order to prevent long-term damage; the Whips Simulator invites users to virtually try on products from the brand’s Whips line and display what their skin would look like as a result of using them; lastly, the Skin Decoder is a camera attachment to the user’s phone which delivers high-resolution imagery that allows for a detailed diagnosis and tracking of the skin over time. The technology is currently already in use in China for sales associates, as the brand is sold at department stores in the country.

Olay’s investment in evolving its personalized advice platform is a result of its huge success since launching in 2016, with the web-based application having been visited over 5 million times by customers.

Olay Labs

Olay Labs Moments device

In 2018, Olay lunched its personalization software Olay Labs, which aims to blend machine learning with human expertise to create a bespoke four-week skincare regimen. In order to achieve this the brand is deploys a an algorithm that can learn and adapt to the user’s skin in real-time and give it advise.

For 2019, it has announced plans to take this to the next level with the Olay Labs Moments, a device that will create bespoke products to the user, daily in their homes, by tracking their skin’s circumstances and reacting in real-time.

Olay FaceNavi Smart Wand

Olay’s Smart Wand

Lastly, also launching at this year’s conference is the Olay Smart Wand, which connects to a mobile app to offer consumers personalized diagnosis and treatment. The device uses electromagnetic technology to read the user’s skin and relay it to the app, which in turn creates temporary, dynamic programmable fields that help the device better drive skincare ingredients into the user’s skin, bespoke to their issues.

Olay Convinced Me to Moisturize By Showing Me What I’ll Look Like in 20 Years

Las Vegas is a very bad place for skin. The casinos are full of smoke, the air is dry, and there are damaging UV rays everywhere because well, it’s the desert. And while I packed some drug store moisturizer and sunscreen for my trip to CES 2019, I have admittedly been very remiss about maintaining a good skin care regimen.

Well, thanks to Olay I have been scared straight.

Skin tech is having a moment at this year’s CES, but Olay’s is the only one with a Future You simulation to show you what you’ll look like in 20 years. An Olay representative took a photo of my face with his iPad and ran it through their Skin Advisor AI to show me my future self if I don’t moisturize and use sunscreen. It’s not pretty.

Olay told me the simulation was devised by studying the faces of over 1,000 women ages 10 to 80 across five major ethnic groups. At the bottom of the app, there’s a slider that lets you tweak your age older or younger by 20 years. It takes into consideration skin tone, wrinkles, age spots, as well as things like thinning lips and a more jowly face shape. A basic version of the simulation is live in Asia, but the feature will also be soon coming to the U.S. While I only got to see myself 20 years older, the final version will let you see the impact of a proper skincare routine, like daily SPF use, versus not. I got to see what I’d look like at 40 without skin care as well as an alternative future in which I lathered myself in product regularly. Basically, I’m going to morph into a hag if I don’t moisturize and possibly look younger if I do.

I also got a chance to peek at a few other products Olay has in development. First off was its FaceNavi Smart Wand. After taking a selfie with the Olay app, through some magical algorithm, it determined my skin’s age to be 28—two years younger than my actual age. Woohoo! It then highlighted the various areas of my skin in AR. The idea is that you’d slather on a recommended Olay cream, and then using this AR map of your face rub the FaceNavi wand over the highlighted areas for “deeper penetration” and increased effectiveness. This part seemed a bit hokey, but at the very least I got a gentle face massage.

More interesting was the Olay Moments. It’s a fairly unassuming tower that’s meant to live in your bathroom but functions like a skin care Keurig. You insert a pod of a base material, and then based on your personalized skin care needs and environmental surroundings, the tower will print custom lotions for your daytime and nighttime routines. So, if you press daytime, your lotions will contain SPF. If you another you’ll get moisturizer. A second one will give you eye cream, etc. In the demo, I was impressed to see that once I’d inserted the pod, the bottom opened up so you could stick your hand in and get a dollop of face lotion. I then dreamed of a future where I could grab a giant trashcan and with one fell swoop, sweep all my beauty products into the garbage.

There’s no word on when the tower will be available as it’s still in development, and Olay was mum about pricing as well. But regardless, it is encouraging to see companies create slightly more practical beauty tech than we’ve seen in past years. But, in the meantime, I’m going to go moisturize my face.

OBJ demonstrate next generation skincare at CES 2019

Technology developed by OBJ featured in Las Vegas

Next-generation skincare technology developed by Perth-based company OBJ has been showcased on the Procter & Gamble (P&G) stand at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. In their first appearance at CES, P&G displayed two products developed by OBJ and designed by D+I — the SK-II magnetic applicator and the new Olay FaceNavi Smart Wand. Both products employ the patented magnetic micro-delivery technique developed by OBJ.

The Olay FaceNavi Smart Wand (pictured above) is the latest product to emerge from the collaboration between OBJ and P&G. It combines new wand-tracking technology with augmented reality (AR) via the Olay Skin Advisor mobile app to determine the optimum skincare for users and guide them through a personalised skincare routine.
