Hike the Muddy Hollow Trail (U.S. National Park Service)

Distance: 4 mi (6.4 km) roundtrip

This out-and-back trail offers an easy hike with opportunities to see diverse bird life, wildflowers, and possibly tule elk! One can either start at the Muddy Hollow Trailhead at the trail’s north end and hike to and from Limantour Beach, or start at trail’s southern terminous at the Limantour Beach Trailhead and hike north and up the Muddy Hollow drainage.

Beginning at the Muddy Hollow Trailhead, follow the path downstream through lush riparian habitat of red alder and willow. After 1.4 miles (2.2 km), one arrives at a pond, which is a good location for birding. The next 0.4 miles (0.7 km) of trail skirts along the southern edge of an arm of Estero de Limantour before eventually arrive at the picnic area just south of Limantour Beach parking lot. Vault toilets are available at this location. From here, you can continue for ~0.2 miles (~350 meters) to the edge of Drakes Bay at Limantour Beach. Retrace your route back when you are ready.

Alternatively, some prefer to start their hike by parking at the Limantour Beach lot and following the Muddy Hollow Trail north from the Limantour Beach Trailhead. This offers the possibility of relax at the beach upon one’s return. To find the southern end of the Muddy Hollow Trail from the large gravel parking lot at Limantour Beach, follow the path from the southern end of the parking lot past the vault toilets, keeping to the right. Just before the picnic area, the trail heads off to the west (to the right) through a small copse of pines.

In the spring and early summer months, tall grasses and new plant growth encroach along sections of the Muddy Hollow Trail. Pants and long sleeves are advised.

This route description alone is not a substitute for a trail map. Print out the park’s North District trail map (3,409 KB PDF) before your visit, or pick one up at a visitor center on your way.

Always check current conditions before heading out into the park and familiarize yourself with park regulations. Please practice Leave No Trace principles.

Muddy Hollow Loop

T he M uddy H ollow L oop

Length 7.3 mi · Climbing 800 ft

Background

This loop runs over the low open hills at the border between the wooded and bald portions of Point Reyes. There isn’t any really exceptional scenery here since the trail isn’t that close the water, the hills are too low to have any great views, and what views do exist are screened by grass and scrub. But it’s still quite a pleasant hike, mainly because there aren’t a lot of distractions: the trail is quiet, with no roads or development nearby and few other hikers, it’s easy to hike with lots of attractive wide-open spaces, and there are a few distant views of Drakes Estero. The trail is generally in good condition and since it doesn’t have any major climbs it’s a quick hike for its length.

This area is home to a herd of 130 elk, one of three Point Reyes herds. The strange sounds of elk bugling can sometimes be heard, but the elk themselves usually can’t be seen.

Hike description

Start at the Muddy Hollow Trailhead and hike west on Muddy Hollow Road. The road, which looks like a dirt road at first but soon narrows to a trail, winds over scrub-covered hills. Some of the hills are capped with trees but the trail itself is almost completely open.

Take the Glenbrook Trail, which is the first trail on the left. The trail climbs a small hill before emerging onto a wide, low ridge.

(For little more variety, skip the Glenbrook Trail and instead continue on Muddy Hollow Road to the White Gate Trail, then turn left onto the Estero Trail. This route adds 2.1 miles and has the best scenery of the hike, with some nice water views. The drawback is that the first quarter-mile of the Estero Trail is heavily overgrown with tall grass.)

The Estero Trail runs along a wide-open, scrub-covered plateau with some distant views of Drakes Estero and Drakes Bay. The trail then descends into a wide, shallow valley, diving into a little strip of woods that surrounds a creek crossing. The trail can get quite overgrown with stinging nettles in this area.

As the trail begins a gentle climb to the low ridge on the other side of the valley, the landscape becomes less open and dotted with trees. There’s a little poison oak here, but it’s easily avoided.

The trail enters a dense grove of tiny pine trees as it descends; in places it turns into a tunnel through the trees. The trail ends at Muddy Hollow Road.

Muddy Hollow Road is fairly popular. To make a 10-mile hike, you can turn right and follow the road to an attractive marsh and Limantour Beach, then turn around and return the same way. Or just turn left to return to the Muddy Hollow trailhead.

Here’s the trailhead location in Google Maps and Google Street View.

Favorite plants on this trail: Candy Flower (Claytonia sibirica)

Favorite spots:

Walking through the shady path of alder trees and candy flowers. It’s magical. At the Limantour end of the trail, admiring the patterns made by the grasses and meandering waters of the marsh. Watching for rare plants and butterflies along the trail edges filled with blooms.

This trail is exceptional for spotting butterflies, especially in the wet areas packed with flowering plants such as Common Cowparsnip (Heracleum maximum), California Poppy, California Bee Plant (Scrophularia californica), Blue Blossom (Ceanothus thyrsiflorus), Pearly Everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea), Coast Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja affinis), Poison Hemlock (Conium maculatum), Trailing Blackberry (Rubus ursinus), Salmonberry (Rubus spectabilis), Thimbleberry (Rubus parviflorus), Hedgenettles (Genus Stachys), beautiful Checker Lily (Fritillaria affinis) and more. You will also encounter many signs of animals from scat to the marks left by elk scratchings on trees and peeling bark. The dry season (summer and fall) are great times to hike this trail so you avoid sloshing through the mud near the beginning of the Limantour end of the trail.

You have the option of starting at the Limantour beach end of the trail or at the Muddy Hollow Trailhead end.

Two trails with similar names start at the same point at the Muddy Hollow trailhead end: the Muddy Hollow Road trail heading north-west toward Drakes Estero, and the Muddy Hollow trail heading south toward Limantour beach. I typically park at the Muddy Hollow trailhead and walk the .3 miles on the wide gravel road, past the Estero trailhead. Surprisingly, there are interesting seep plants and birds in this beginning stretch. About midway through the trail, you treated to a shady path of alders often blooming with candy flowers on both sides of the trail.

Muddy Hollow Trail at Point Reyes

The Point Reyes National Seashore has a wide variety of hiking trails, and opportunities to visit a wide range of wildflower zones. The Muddy Hollow trail at Point Reyes is an easy hike that starts off with a woods-lined stream, followed by a marsh, and then on to the oceanside at Limantour Beach. There is a wide range of flowers to see along the way.

The Hike

The Muddy Hollow Road parking lot is the starting point for multiple trails, some that head up into the estuary highlands. others that head back into the mountains, and the Muddy Hollow trail that leads down to Limantour Beach. The total round trip for our hike was 5.8 miles, which included the Muddy Hollow trail and then a hike behind the sand dunes on the Limantour Spit trail. If you want a shorter hike you can turn back at the beach, which would make the hike just short of 4 miles.

The trail parallels a small stream, and the early part is a nice walk under the alder trees. You start with a service road, then it becomes a well maintained trail with a bridge crossing the stream. There are lots of flowers, but you don’t want to wander off the trail because there was also a lot of poison oak.

Eventually you come out into the estuary area, which is more exposed. Since you are at the seashore it often is breezy and overcast, so it isn’t hot. You get a different collection of wildflowers here. At the end of the Muddy Hollow trail you’ll find the parking lot for Limantour Beach. You can continue along the trail and cross over the sand dunes to the beach itself, or you can take the sandy Limantour Spit trail to the west, which runs behind the dunes and wanders through the Coyotoe Bush and Lupine shrubs. Three very different kinds of wildflower communities, all in one hike.

There aren’t any restrooms at the Muddy Hollow trailhead, but there are pit toilets at the parking lot for Limantour Beach, as well as several picnic tables.

We saw Great Egrets and Great Blue Herons in the estuary area, as well as many smaller birds and ducks.

Timing is Everything

We visited in early July and found a good variety of flowers along the Muddy Hollow trail itself. This is more protected than the surrounding hills and the beach, so the flowers last longer into the season. The estuary area had masses of yellow gumweed. At the beach itself most of the flowers were finished, other than the bush Lupine and Indian Paintbrush. Because of the overcast from the ocean, temperatures stayed in the upper 60’s to low 70’s, a welcome respite from the hotter temperatures inland.

Directions to the Muddy Hollow Trail at Point Reyes

Point Reyes National Seashore is in Marin county, north of San Francisco. The nearest town is Point Reyes Station (home of Cowgirl Creamery and Bovine Bakery) on Highway 1.

From Point Reyes Station:

Take Highway 1 south.

Just after you cross the bridge right at the edge of town, turn west (right) onto Sir Francis Drake Blvd.

Sir Francis Drake Blvd ends at Bear Valley Road. Turn south (left).

Look for signs for Limantour Beach and turn right onto Limantour Road. This wanders up into the hills.

Turn right at the sign for Muddy Hollow. There is a short gravel road to a parking lot (you can’t go any further).

Note that you can continue on Limantour Road until you get to the parking lot for Limantour Beach, which is the end of the Muddy Hollow trail and the start for the Limantour Spit trail.

The Point Reyes National Seashore website has great maps that show all of the hiking trails.

The Flowers

Please feel free to help me with the identification of any “unidentified” flowers listed here, as well as correcting any errors I may make. Click on any photograph to see a larger image. I’ll start with a few favorites, and then the “gallery” (click on the gallery pictures to scroll through).

Self heal is a pretty California native that we found in the low spots along the trail, shortly after the road turns into a hiking path.

There were several kinds of Indian paintbrush on this hike, some along the Muddy Hollow trail and others behind the dunes on the Limantour Spit trail. It is always hard to identify which species. Their intense, bright color makes them easy to spot.

Coyote brush is found in many locations on this hike. It is an interesting California native, with the male and female flowers on separate plants.

Purple western morning glory is a native plant found only in California.
