Amanda Marbais’ fiction has appeared or is forthcoming in Hobart, SmokeLong Quarterly, Joyland, and elsewhere. She was featured in Electric Literature’s Recommended Reading series and was shortlisted in the New York Times Book Review for her debut short-story collection, Claiming a Body, winner of the 2018 Moon City Short Fiction Award. She is represented by Joanna MacKenzie at Nelson Literary Agency.
The stories in Amanda Marbais’ Claiming a Body read like dispatches from a frontline strewn with infected relationships, metastasizing anxieties, and cultural fatigue. Propelled by sympathetic characters and assertive voices that both capture and convey a uniquely contemporary dread, these virtual confessions reveal life at its most negotiable: a woman overcomes her fear of both commitment and grizzlies in the unspoiled wilderness of Glacier National Park; a couple cons friends one last time in the decaying rustbelt before turning on each other; the son of a poultry farmer struggles with inhumane practices while resisting the undercurrent of violence in his high school.
Just as Marbais’ characters seek to cross painful thresholds and unearth their better selves, her collection finds ways to communicate across traditional genre lines, bringing together such disparate styles as noir, environmental fiction, and speculative fiction. Woven throughout is a hard-wrought prose that crackles with a steady stream of references to the modern American landscape that is frequently to blame for the chaos left in its wake.

We seek full-length manuscript submissions through our annual fiction and poetry contests, the Moon City Short Fiction Award and the Moon City Poetry Award. Please click on the links for more information about these competitions.
Missouri Author Series:
The Missouri Author Series is a book series dedicated to authors residing in Missouri or writing about Missouri in the genres of fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. The Missouri Author Series is currently on hiatus, but we hope to return to it in the near future.
Moon City Press Submission Manager
The 2023 Moon City Short Fiction Award
• The Moon City Short Fiction Award is for an original collection of short fiction, written originally in English by a single or collaborative author.
• Individual pieces in the collection may be published in periodicals but not yet collected and published in full-length manuscript form.
• Entries may include short shorts, short fiction, and/or up to one novella. Please include a table of contents and acknowledgements page (of previous publications).
• Open to all writers not associated with Moon City Press or its judges, past or present. Students, employees, and alumni of Missouri State University are ineligible.
• Manuscripts should fall between 30,000 and 65,000 words.
• Manuscripts should be submitted via Submittable, https://mooncitypress.submittable.com.
• A $25 entry fee is due via Submittable at the time of submission; entry fees are nonrefundable.
• Simultaneous submissions are permitted, though manuscripts should be withdrawn immediately if accepted elsewhere.
• Deadline: October 1, 2022. Winners will be notified by Fall 2023 and the winner will be published in Spring 2024.
• First prize: $1000, publication by Moon City Press (including international distribution through the University of Arkansas Press), and a standard royalty contract. Ten additional finalists will be named and considered for publication.
