Misty Korean Drama Review

The Good

A complex female lead you can’t help but admire

Misty revolves around successful news anchor Go Hye Ran (Kim Nam Joo). When she’s accused of the murder of a former lover, her estranged husband, Kang Tae Wook (Ji Jin Hee) must step in as her defense lawyer.

Let us all pause here to recognize the sheer glory that is the character of Go Hye Ran. I jumped ship over to this show in a bout of frustration over Hwayugi basically sidelining its female lead, and Misty saved me from just about giving up on all K-dramas.

😍😍😍

Years ago, I wrote a post about “unlikable” female leads in K-dramas. I didn’t know it then, but Go Hye Ran is the drama character I was wishing and waiting for. She’s not a perfectly “good” person, and I often disagreed with the choices she made—but that’s exactly what makes her so compelling.

Here we have an ambitious, successful, capable, determined, and brilliant woman, and we see how having all of those qualities in a world dominated by men has forced her to also be calculating, hard, and, at times, outright cruel. Over the course of the drama, she doesn’t become an entirely different person or a docile, domesticated female lead, but instead, she embraces who she is while also learning how to be vulnerable and open herself to love.

I don’t often watch melodramas, but I found myself swept up in Hye Ran’s story because all of the emotions felt realistic and earned.

The pantsuits

Yes, the pantsuits get their own subhead (and ahead of the romance, to boot). Whoever ran the wardrobe department on this series should get a gigantic bonus because Kim Nam Joo looked flawless from head to toe in every single scene. I would watch this entire series all over again just to bask in the beauty of those pantsuits once more.

Absolute perfection.

Bam. (Ji Jin Hee ain’t half bad, either.)

Pantsuit envy is a very real malady, okay?

The relationship dynamic

Misty isn’t a traditional romance by any means, but it’s certainly a compelling one. Just like I rooted for Hye Ran without applauding every single decision she made, I also fell hard for what a friend called Tae Wook’s “courtly love” while also recognizing that his adoration wasn’t always healthy or productive. (More on this later.)

They’re two flawed people navigating a very flawed relationship, and I found myself breathlessly hanging on to every longing glance from Tae Wook or small smile from Hye Ran.

It doesn’t hurt that Kim Nam Joo and Ji Jin Hee make for a mature, sexy onscreen couple. There were a few scenes where they walked off arm in arm, and I just thought “Dang, they look good.”

Cue “Sexy and I Know It”

The Bad (WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD)

Don’t read after this if you don’t want to be spoiled on what happens!

(Is it safe to start?)

THAT ENDING.

DJF;HGSHG;OISEHRG;IUEHRGUHERIULGHERLIUGBHVJEBRLGIUHELRG

I did not go into Misty expecting a happy ending. I wasn’t watching to see Hye Ran and Tae Wook strolling off cheerfully into the sunset, so the fact that it’s a tragic ending isn’t what made me so upset.

But here’s what gets me: that particular choice of an ending undermined almost every single thing I loved about the rest of the show. Some people may see the whole thing as a clever twist or as a reasonable outcome for a complex story like this, but I honestly feel like the writer sacrificed the heart of the series for the sake of surprise.

Let me climb atop a very large soap box to explain why.

Ok, so Tae Wook is the killer. SURPRISE! Yes, it’s an unexpected outcome, but it also takes all of those nuanced, emotional interactions between Tae Wook and Hye Ran and releases a giant fart in their face.

Tae Wook didn’t have to learn to trust and believe Hye Ran because he knew she wasn’t the killer from the very start. Sure, there’s still the internal conflict of defending a wife he believes has betrayed him, but he also doesn’t have much choice because she’s getting blamed for something he did. Way to cut the emotional legs out from under the entire first half of the show.

All those scenes where she’s begging him to believe her? Oh wait, pointless. He’s a murdery murderpants. And he just stood there and watched her sob.

So what you’re telling me is this face was a lie.

And these puppy eyes?

Surely not this one too!

But even if the writer must make Tae Wook the killer (which I don’t buy because who killed Kevin wasn’t the actual point of the show to begin with—why not just reveal that it really was an accident or leave it ambiguous?), the way the aftermath played out in the final episode was even worse.

Allow me to take some deep, calming breaths before rage typing about this.

Throughout the entirety of Misty, people like the police officer and Eun Joo keep making comments about how the death of the pawn shop owner and, later, Kevin, are Hye Ran’s fault because the men around her kill to protect her.

The way the finale plays out just reinforces that claim.

So let me get this straight. Because Hye Ran has the absolute audacity to want to go to college or break the glass ceiling or—I don’t know—not get sexually assaulted by a guy she dumped a decade ago, she cannot possibly learn to have a normal, loving relationship.

Did she do things wrong throughout the show? Yes. But we already saw how she and Tae Wook worked through the betrayal of her abortion and her tryst with Kevin. Literally the only reason the show has for suggesting that she doesn’t deserve happiness at this point is that she’s Go Hye Ran.

The finale reaffirms that no one in their right mind would love such a woman, and the only men who could possibly stick with someone as ambitious as her are obsessive, impulsive killers. If only Hye Ran had been nice and sweet and popped out babies for her in-laws to admire, Tae Wook wouldn’t have snapped!

Even the final scenes support the idea that Hye Ran had no right to think she could ever be happy. Tae Wook’s “Hye Ran-ah…so, are you happy?” mocks her and her foolish belief that a powerful woman is also allowed to have a personal life.

OF COURSE SHE’S NOT HAPPY, YOU MORONS! Why would she be happy when she’s spent her entire life traumatized by guilt over an act of violence that wasn’t her fault, only to let her guard down a teensy tiny bit and have ANOTHER idiot take over her life with ANOTHER act of violence that wasn’t her fault.

Forget the beautiful relationship of mutual respect she’s built with her boss over the years. Forget how she becomes a trusted mentor for the upcoming generation of reporters. Forget how she took down the untouchable baddies. Forget all of that because this ending is about dudes making terrible decisions and everyone blaming it on her. (And that police officer can go take his self-righteous lectures on a long walk off a short pier because accusing people of murder over decades-old hunches is way less ethical than anything Hye Ran did.)

Watching all of this play out makes me want to go full Myung Woo on whoever thought this was a great idea. Congratulations. You’ve taken badass Go Hye Ran fighting against sexism and injustice and turned it into dudes controlling Hye Ran’s entire life again.

Is Misty worth watching?

If you asked me a week ago, I would have said yes times ten million. But now? Maybe I’ll have a better answer for you once the emotional response wears off.

At least we’ll always have the pantsuits.

Where to watch Misty:

You’ll notice I’ve been too lazy to post anything in about two months. But now, thanks to the complete and utter trash fire disguised as cleverness that was the finale of, here I am. Nothing like a little (okay, a lot of) rage to fuel the blogging flames! The thing is, I wouldn’t be so angry atif I hadn’t loved it so much up until the ending. I started reviewing this K-drama in my head all last week, ready to sing its praises to the heavens (and the drama viewers who hadn’t started it yet). So, before I have my say aboutending, let’s review all of the many things that went right in this K-drama. Don’t worry—I’ll warn you when we’re heading into spoilers.

K-Drama Faves: Misty

Extended Community Quarantine is giving me a lot of time to watch K-Dramas. I just finished Misty on Netflix, my 46th K-Drama series. I’ve been watching for a little over a year now. I don’t know if that’s considered a lot. My friend recommended this series so I thought I’d give it a go. I was not disappointed!

Misty is about a news anchorwoman named Ko Hye-ran (Kim Nam-joo). Ko Hye-ran seems to have the perfect life — she’s the most famous and most trusted media person in Korea. She has the ideal husband in the ever-devoted and loyal Kang Tae-wook (Ji Jin-hee), who hails from a prestigious family of lawyers.

Ko Hye-ran’s perfect life is thrown off balance with the arrival of the world renowned golfer Kevin Lee. Everyone in Korea wants a piece of him and so Ko Hye-ran is assigned to do a TV special. Problem is, Kevin Lee is Ko Hye-ran’s ex… and is currently the husband of her childhood friend Seo Eun-joo. Kevin wastes no time in putting on the moves for Ko Hye-ran. That is until he suddenly dies in a car crash.

The problem is, the police don’t think Kevin Lee’s death is an accident. They think it’s homicide… and the prime suspect is Ko Hye-ran because her brooch was found on the scene of the accident. Misty has everything — suspenseful situations, courtroom drama, romance… it’s one hell of an exciting series. In fact it garnered really high ratings in Korea, with actress Kim Nam-joo winning an award for her performance.

Misty’s plot has so many twists and turns it will continuously keep you guessing.

The characters are so well fleshed-out it’s hard not to empathize with them. What I didn’t like about Misty was the ending. I completely understand why it had to conclude the way it did, but that doesn’t make it any less disappointing. My reaction to the ending — WHAAAATTTT???? Sigh.

Extremely talented actors, a riveting plot, and some of the most quote-worthy lines in a K-Drama make Misty well worth watching. Here are some of my faves:

Kyo Hye-ran: “Girls don’t need to earn men’s affection.” / “Women aren’t born to be liked by men.”

Seo Eun-joo (to her hubby’s other woman): “How much do you want? You entertained my husband, so you should get paid.”

Kang Tae-wook: “I love you. And you’ll come to love me too. I’ll make it happen.”

Did I mention that Ko Hye-ran is all about women empowerment? She even tells her junior Han Ji-won that if you let them (the higher-ups) trample on you now, they’ll always do it. Ko Hye-ran is far from the perfect heroine but she’s such a strong female figure you can’t help but be in awe of her.

So why is the title Misty? Gee I don’t know… maybe because of the fog? Lol.

Misty is available on Netflix.

Review

After watching the last episode, I know why they called this Misty, but I think “Misery” is more appropriate and probably how I can describe this drama. I would also describe this as Tragic but it doesn’t sound as good as Misery.

What I loved the most (and really the reason I couldn’t stop watching) is hands down the twisted relationship between Go Hye Ran and Kang Tae wook! Their palpable chemistry whenever they’re on screen. The way they look at each other was so full of sexual tension. And most especially, Kang Tae Wook’s angsty eyes were so sexy yet so sad. After 7 years of pain, and all the difficult things they went through to get to each other, I just wanted them to live happy ever after.

Ji Jinhee just went straight to my oppa collection. OMG! I cant believe i’ve been sleeping on him for years!! (Most probably because his dramas weren’t my cup of tea, but now I’m looking forward to his succeeding dramas).

Go Hye Ran is one of those amazing female characters in Kdramaland. She is so powerful and successful. I loved what Han Ji won said to her, “I dont know about respect, but I know Go Hye Ran always win.” She is not the nicest female character, but you will empathize with her in some way, that’s why despite the tv station being scared of her, when she retired, you can see the admiration in everyone’s eyes, and how much they loved her.

Oh I can’t not mention the fashion. Go Hye Ran’s pantsuits and her different shades of lipsticks screams powerful and sexy. Kang Tae Wook’s gorgeous coats and turtlenecks made him more mysterious and protective.

Director Jang! I normally hate all the characters that Lee Gyun Yeong plays but this time he was amazing! One minute, I’m scared he will throw Hye Ran under the bus, but the next minute, he is all bad-ass, defending her and the reputation of journalists. I really wish that media people are like him. Not manipulating the news for their own (and some powerful corporation’s) interests, but also not withholding the truth from the people. Like he said, FACTS. Give the facts, let the people decide / interpret.

The whole murder-Kevin Lee affair at the start got me so hooked with the story. It was short but Go Joon nailed the playboy Kevin Lee. It was fun to think of who killed Kevin, how and why. About halfway, I was already dreading the truth after I was eliminating each suspect from my mind. I was right — but I didn’t want to be right!!! I also hated Kevin Lee’s wife!!! It’s not Hye Ran’s fault she is amazing, but for Eun Joo to keep insisting she killed Kevin without enough evidence was both infuriating (I wanted to scratch her eyes out for hurting Hye Ran) and pathetic (Eun Joo also led a sad life, but she made her own choices, she knew Kevin’s infidelity, she lost her baby through her negligence, she should just move on and forward).

The downside of this drama is the way the writer handled the murder investigation. For one, I disliked the super incompetent Detective Kang. I can’t believe he has worked as a detective for 20 years and arrests people based on bias and circumstantial evidence. Second, the trial was a big mess. Third, the prosecutors were too dumb. I loved it when Taewook’s assistant shouted at Kang to do his job properly. Like, finally, someone told him what all the viewers must be thinking all this time!

There were also some plotholes and other questions that were never fully answered, but it was okay, because in the end it didn’t really matter to me anymore. I just wanted the case to be closed and put everyone out of their misery.

The last 2 episodes lost focus of its original intention. I was disappointed that Hyeran let go of her principles. I already knew this will never have a happy ending and I would have been happy up to the second half of the last episode. Ha Myung Woo’s sacrifice didn’t make sense and was all for nothing because of the last 10 mins. But I understand why the ending was that way. That final scene when Kang Tae Wook said, “Are you happy?” And Hyeran was crying. SO SAD. SO TRAGIC. I couldn’t stop thinking about the ending even days after watching the show.

Rating: 8.5/10 (8 for the story +0.5 for tragic lives of the leads)

Misty | Series Review

Just as I was about to write a lengthy rant about this gem of a K-drama, I preferred not to. Grumpy Ahjumma is furious, but for the sake of those 16 hours we shared, I hereby declare that Misty (despite its horrible ending) was still one of the best Korean dramas ever filmed. It definitely deserved its Best Drama nomination in this year’s Baeksang Arts Awards.

Be prepared for a roller coaster ride as Misty lived up to its title until the drama’s end. It’s vague, and full of twists and turns. It will give you anxiety and bring you harm. You will forever be wounded, but you would love every moment of it.

Misty revolved around the life of Go Hye-ran (Kim Nam-joo), an anchorwoman who was at the peak of her career. Throughout the drama, she would repeatedly talk about the “realization of a just society” as her ultimate dream in life. She never lost even once, and she was ready to go higher in this rat race called life. But everything turned upside down when her ex-lover Lee Jae-young (Go Joon) came back into the picture.

Go Hye-ran was the heroine nobody knew they needed. It just felt so refreshing to finally get to watch somebody who was hardworking yet manipulative, without relying on some prince charming on a white horse. She worked her way up to win the much coveted position as JBC News Nine’s main anchor, eliminating every single hindrance that gets in her way. I don’t want to spoil the good parts because her fight against the evils of the mainstream media and the corrupt in politics are what made this drama so precious.

Grumpy tidbit: Kim Nam-joo won multiple Best Actress awards for all her past three dramas Queen of Reversals, Queen of Housewives, and My Husband Got a Family. Now, she is up for yet another Best Actress nomination in the upcoming 54th Baeksang Arts Awards! She is Go Hye-ran personified!

Hye-ran’s husband Kang Tae-wook (Ji Jin-hee) was the “perfect” complement for the feisty heroine. He was the ethical prosecutor-turned-lawyer who defended the abused. Tae-wook and Hye-ran was the picture perfect couple everyone envied. But underneath their seemingly flawless relationship lies a deep wound that has yet to be healed.

The complicated story started with Jae-young’s return to South Korea as a successful pro golfer Kevin Lee along with his wife and Hye-ran’s high school friend Seo Eun-joo (Jun Hye-jin). Hye-ran, desperate to keep her spot as News Nine’s main anchor, tapped the elusive Kevin Lee for an exclusive one-on-one interview. As you all know even before the drama started, Kevin died in a car accident but the investigators concluded that it was murder. The drama revolved around the chase for the real murderer, and Hye-ran being the center of the investigation.

Grumpy tidbit: Jun Hye-jin is also married to top actor Lee Sun-kyun who currently topbills tvN’s My Ahjussi opposite IU. Remember him in Coffee Prince, anyone?

GRUMPY ALLEY

I may not like the ending of this drama but I still won’t deny these supporting actors the spotlight they deserve:

Ha Myung-woo (Im Tae-kyung)

Hye-ran’s childhood friend who liked her. He served his sentence in prison for killing a man who wronged Hye-ran in the past. And now, he cleans up every single mess that Hye-ran and Tae-wook get involved with. I love Myung-woo so much, I can’t forgive the writer for giving him a very undeserving end.

Han Ji-won (Jin Ki-joo)

Hye-ran’s hoobae and News Nine’s new main anchor. Her character transformed from being the most hated one to the one who I rooted for in the end.

Jang Gyu-seok (Lee Kyung-young)

Chief Jang was my favorite newsroom personality aside from Hye-ran! He may be harsh as a leader but he surely deserved his position. He knew when to use the right cards at the right moment, and protected his own people like family. I never doubted his loyalty to Hye-ran for a second and vice versa.

istg this is the best scene of #Misty pic.twitter.com/uqYB3GO6JW — ✖ SEMI HIATUS ✖ (@novaturientwish) April 6, 2018

Jung Ki-chan (Lee Joon-hyuk)

Tae-wook’s ever trusted assistant who never left his side until the end. After the show revealed that he knew everything from the start, my confusion skyrocketed to space. He knew about Tae-wook’s secret but kept mum while Hye-ran was being dragged by the prosecution. Don’t talk to me about loyalty anymore.

Kwak Si-yeok (Koo Ja-sung)

Reporter Kwak was also Hye-ran’s hoobae. I initially taught he liked Hye-ran (I know, poor character judgement) but his conversation with Ji-won about respect changed my perception of him. Kwak Si-yeok can talk about how he much admired his senior but will never appear as flirty or perverted.

The not-so-shocking ending

Kang Tae-wook was biggest flop of this drama. He was introduced to us as the admirable lawyer born with a silver spoon. He loved Hye-ran so much that he was willing to give up everything for her. However, the show decided to turn its back on all of us when they revealed the real killer was the principled Tae-wook. The writer even mentioned in one of her interviews that she made it clear that Tae-wook is the real killer since the beginning.

Nevertheless, despite all the loopholes, Misty was all about life’s ambiguities. In all honesty, I think Misty‘s ending was lazy writing. How could you even write a perfect character who showed how much he loved his wife and then reveal that it was all part of a frame-up? And while we’re at it, Tae-wook showed no mercy for Hye-ran (and all of us) with his ultimate decision of taking his own life. Really? That was it? I really did not expect something magical or that the drama will give us a happy ending, but the suicide as the final act of this show was just too much. It’s like the sacrifice of Myung-woo was put to waste. Hye-ran was still unhappy. And the realization of a just society never materialized.

The Fangirl Verdict

Jonan writes:

Dear Fangurl

I discovered your blog after watching Crash Landing on You and searching for reviews online. After that I immediately would read your reviews after watching a show and using your ratings for recommendations. I absolutely love your format and style of writing. I have some questions I am highly curious about.

What are the shows you have dropped which are not on the list of shows. This started after I watched Goblin and was searching for your take. It wasn’t on the list and learned reading one of your year end recaps that it was not for you. This got me curious to know which shows you have tried and dropped. No need to write any review or explanation, just a straight up list would be great.

What are shows you dropped but plan to continue. I read on one of your replies that you eventually plan to return to Dear My Friends (a show I loved) and Signal (I loved it as well.) What are famous shows that you have no intention of watching. I remember mentioning Kingdom. Are shows like Dr Romantic and Stranger included in this list?

They don’t have to be 100% complete and maybe they could also help as well by lessening the number of requests you get from new members wondering about some old shows.

Of course if this is too time consuming or not something you are interested in answering then no problem whatsoever.

Thank you again for the wonderful reviews.

Misty – The Ending is Up to Us Viewers

Much has been said and written about Misty, especially its ending. But that just proves how “misty” this KDrama is. That’s how life really is. Nothing is certain. Everything seems ambiguous, vague.

Many times, a fine line separates right from wrong. We always face a dilemma. Choices. And the result may not be what we hope for. So with Misty. This echoes in all the 16 episodes. Viewers are always face with questions.

Basically, Misty is a tale of an ambitious woman, craving for happiness, success, and acceptance in a male-dominated society. And Kim Nam Joo, the ambitious news anchor Go Hye Ran, won Best Actress In the 54th Baeksang Arts Awards. Misty is also a who-dunit murder thriller.

But let me focus on Ji Jin Hee, the husband character. He’s only done 1 villain role. A “vampire” doctor in Blood in 2015. Is he also a villain in Misty?

Ji Jin Hee is known for portraying the good guy. The righteous, honest, noble, martyr, handsome husband, father, son or colleague. Yep, in Misty it seemed that way. I feel for his character, Kang Tae Wook. Marrying a woman he truly loves, but doesn’t love him back, who aborted their child for the sake of her ambition.

He’s a good guy. And he even chose to be a low-earning public defender over his previous high profile prosecutor status.

What he’s done is quite relatable. Many men would side with Kang Tae Wook.

Kang Tae Wook’s only fault was loving someone who didn’t love him back. Giving his all and not leaving some for himself. And when she realizes she loves him, it seems too late.

The scene faded. The drama ended. The ending is left to the audience. Just like its title, it was Misty at the very end.

Ok. Ok. I know many were disappointed with the ending. What ending? It’s open ended. Up to the viewer to decide.

For me, I sensed a glimpse of hope with the 2 characters in some scenes in the last episode. And they deserve a second chance. They deserve to be a happy, as a husband and wife who love each other.

So I would think Kang Tae Wook didn’t crash his car. He came to his senses at the last minute, and drove straight to the studio to be with his wife.

And Go Hye Ran? She was just overwhelmed by the question. It took her quite some time. But I imagine she would answer, “Yes, I’m happy. And my happiness is my husband,” with the camera panning to Kang Tae Wook who just arrived at the studio, holding a bouquet of flowers.

Misty has a great cast, superb cinematography, onpoint background music, well woven story.
