SEOUL – “Those K-pop stars don’t have Korean faces.”

So says Dr. Jaegwon Wang, a top plastic surgeon at Oracle Clinic, one of the most popular skincare and cosmetic surgery clinics in the world. While most all Korean female celebrities have had their faces stitched in some way, Dr. Wang says “6/10” male celebrities have had procedures as well. He can tell just by looking at their v-lined jaws, their double eyelids and their delicate facial features who’s had their looks enhanced. “It’s really obvious,” he tells me. “Those aren’t what typical Koreans look like.”

In a city where one’s appearance is obsessed over, where having better skin and a more handsome jawline can give you an edge not only personally but professionally, plastic surgery has become a national obsession. A peruse through Gangnam aka the “Improvement Quarter,” one that’s become even more famous due to a certain Korean rapper, will show just how normalized plastic surgery has become. On any day, it’s a normal occurrence to spot men and women wrapped in gauzes. Their eyes are covered with dark, over-sized sunglasses, their faces swollen from surgery, they walk around like zombies in the daylight as it’s just another day.

South Korea’s plastic surgery economy is so big, it’s estimated to be $5 billion.

Because it is.

According to a 2014 study from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, a global plastic surgery association, Koreans had the most procedures done per capita than any other country. That’s 20 people out of 1,000 who have had some kind of enhancement. South Korea’s plastic surgery economy is so big, it’s estimated to be $5 billion, one that attracts foreigners to take “enhancement vacations” to the city. To make this even more appetizing, South Korea offers tax-free nose jobs, meaning, foreigners can get their procedures done at a “duty-free” rate.

It’s no wonder why every person I meet looks like a Korean celebrity. Whether walking in trains, on the sidewalk or quietly observing in a cafe, every woman and man has a perfect bone structure, alluring almond-shaped eyes, flawless skin tones. Their jawlines are sharp, pronounced, just like any Korean pop star. I begin to become a little insecure with my own square jaw, my monolids, my hyperpigmentation. For the first time in a long time, I feel … totally unattractive.

Which is one reason I make an appointment with Dr. Wang. Not only am I curious about plastic surgery, I want to have a consultation to see what I could do to become a more attractive person. While in the U.S., beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, in Seoul, it’s one size only. For males, Dr. Wang, explains, it’s a very defined jawline, a small face, with a high nose bridge, and bigger, awake eyes. While in the past, double eyelids were all the rage, with men wanting a more feminine “Flower Boy” look, these days, he tells me, monolids are “trendy.” They “make a man look masculine and strong.”

I inquire if these features are due to the fact that Koreans want to look more Westernized, and Dr. Wang agrees to a certain degree. “There is definitely Western influence when it comes to Korean aesthetics,” he says. “But Koreans do not want to look European.” No one, for instance, comes in wanting to look like Angelina Jolie or Jennifer Aniston. Rather, Dr. Wang explains, Korean men and women take Western beauty references to see what works for an Asian face. “It’s getting that beautiful Korean face to make it more attractive with small enhancements.”

While in the U.S., beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, in Seoul, it’s one size only.

These days, he says, Korean men have been requesting the risky V-line jaw surgery. It’s one where surgeons take a person’s bone structure and literally shave it down. If it sounds painful, it is. Surgeons have to map out one’s facial nerves to define the bone. Side effects have been said to be sensitivity around the face that never goes away, a clicking sound with every open of the mouth and numbness. Though the procedure comes with these possibility, Dr. Wang assures me technology has gotten so much better it’s rare these patients go through such pain. The cost is anywhere from $5,000-$10,000.

But it’s still terrifying to think you could be impaired with permanent side effects from the pursuit of gaining a perfectly shaped face. Still, I inquire about what surgeries my own face would need. Immediately upon inspection, Dr. Wang tells me something I already know: he’d shave down my square jaw for a more defined chin.

“We’d make it more oval with that V-line that everyone wants.” He’d also slit my upper eyelid and take out extra skin. “We wouldn’t get rid of your monolid, but make your eyes look wider and more alive. Less sleepy.” In terms of my nose, it’s the only part of my face he says should stay put. “You already have an enviable bridge and your nose is big enough but not too big that you don’t need anything there.”

I appreciate Dr. Wang’s insight and how straightforward he is. There’s no beating around the bush, there’s no false flattery or inflation of a potential patient’s ego. It is what it is. And what it is is that I’m ugly.

For the next couple of days, I find myself staring intensely into any and all mirrors, making a “V” with my hands on my face to see what I’d look like. I admit, from a Korean standpoint, I would look more attractive.

But as the days go by and I make my way back Stateside, I realize that my imperfections make me, well, me. My square jawline, my “sleepy eyelids,” and my crooked smile are different – unique, even – and I’m beginning to come back to my senses. Who’s to say that my imperfections are anything less than perfect?

On a recent Saturday, I tune into a video from the KPOP band, EXO. I’m fascinated by how perfect they look, their elfin milky skin dewy, their jawlines sharp, their double eyelids making them seemingly wide awake. Then I realize for the first time that it isn’t real. It’s all an illusion. Their flawless personas are merely projections of perfection. At least, that’s what makes it easier for me –my square jaw, and all.

South Korea has the highest rate of plastic surgeries per capita in the world.

The most popular surgeries are skin whitening, nose jobs, and double-eyelid surgery, which many critics have taken to mean that Koreans are trying to look more Caucasian or white.

Alfred “Haeppy” Leung, a Seoul-based YouTuber, explained that the beauty ideals that Koreans are trying to achieve with plastic surgery are based on long-standing Korean beauty standards and have little to do with Western beauty standards.

SEOUL —With the highest rate of cosmetic surgeries in the world and nearly 1 million procedures a year, South Korea is often called the world’s plastic surgery capital.

Some estimates have suggested that around one in three South Korean women between 19 and 29 have had plastic surgery. Others have put that number at 50% or higher.

By far the most common surgery that Koreans do, according to Dr. Choi Min of Answer Plastic Surgery in Gangnam, is a blepharoplasty, or double-eyelid surgery, where they insert a crease in the eyelid to make the eye look bigger. The two other popular procedure are rhinoplasties, or nose jobs, and glutathione injections, which slows pigmentation in the skin, thus giving a fairer skin tone.

Many Western critics, plastic surgeons included, have taken the prevalence of these procedures to mean that Koreans desire to look more Caucasian or white. Only about 50% of East Asians have “double eyelids,” while it is widespread among Caucasians.

But Alfred “Haeppy” Leung, a Seoul-based YouTuber with WeFancy, a channel that examines Korean culture, believes that this is a major misconception about plastic surgery in South Korea.

“The misconception that, ‘Koreans just want to look white,’ is a symptom of western arrogance and Eurocentrism and has no basis in reality,” Leung told Business Insider. “Pale skin has always been a standard of beauty not only in East Asia but all of Asia, based on the implication that the lighter the skin the less one was in the sun working outdoors.”

Further, the type of nose bridge that Koreans tend to ask for in a rhinoplasty is markedly different from the the ideal Caucasian nose bridge. And the crease above the eyelid has always been sought after in Asian cultures both because it is rare and because it creates visually larger eyes, according to Leung.

The misconception is one battled frequently by plastic surgeons in Asia, as Li Binbin, a Beijing-based plastic surgeon, explained to the South China Morning Post last year.

“In the East, we have our own beauty standards. The majority of Chinese don’t have very big eyes. That’s why people all want [the double-eyelid surgery],” Li said.

Even Dr. Robert Flowers, who has received some credit for popularizing the surgery in the US, disputes the notion that blepharoplasties are about making Asians look more white.

“The general idea then — and I keep hearing it even today — was that Asians who have facial and eyelid surgery want to ‘Westernize,’ Flowers told New York Magazine in 2014. “And that’s even what Asian plastic surgeons thought they were doing then as well. But that’s not what Asians want. They want to be beautiful Asians.”

Common procedures beyond eyelid surgery, nose jobs, and skin whitening are also aimed at achieving specifically Korean beauty standards, not Western, according to Leung.

“For example, Koreans like slimmer jawlines while Westerners like stronger jawlines. Westerners like higher protruding cheekbones while Koreans tend to like flatter cheekbones. Koreans tend not to like very thick and full lips, while lip fillers are considered a standard procedure in western cosmetic surgery,” Leung said.

2. Minzy

Minzy, who was a member of girl group 2NE1, became the center of plastic surgery rumors back in 2013. Her agency YG Entertainment denied the claims, attributing her changing appearance to age. However, Minzy eventually admitted that she had surgery done on her nose.

“Since long ago, I suffered when I was singing and dancing due to my rhinitis. When I went to hospital, they told me I needed surgery because my nose was crooked toward the front,” she told a local news agency. “Since I’ve never underwent surgery before, I was worried. My mother suggested that since I was already getting corrective surgery to straighten my nose, I should also get plastic surgery. 3. Park Min Young

When Park Min Young was getting attention for her role in Sungkyunkwan Scandal, old school photos of her surfaced online, leading netizens to suspect that she’s done plastic surgery. Because of this, the actress made the decision to reveal that she has indeed gone under the knife. The actress told Sports Chosun that she had double eyelid surgery done in junior high school and got her nose done during that time because it was crooked.

Explaining why she revealed it, she said, “I don’t think it’s a bad idea to truthfully state something as is. The past is important, but I hope people focus more on the current ‘actress Park Min Young.'”

4. Ze:A’s Hwang Kwanghee

Idol and MC Kwanghee is one of the few male K-pop idols who has casually talked about getting cosmetic surgery. He shared during several TV show guestings that he had procedures done on his eyes, nose, chin, and forehead. In fact, in an episode of Cool Kids, it was revealed that the only part of his face that Kwanghee didn’t get any work done was his cheekbones! Kwanghee had his eyebrows microbladed as well, and quipped in the same show (My Old Little Boy) that your face “settles down” 10 years post-plastic surgery to look more natural.

5. Brown Eyed Girls’ Narsha

During an interview for Radio Star, Narsha of the group Brown Eyed Girls said that she has “gotten much prettier and happier” after her cosmetic procedures. She said that being a celebrity obviously meant that they paid attention to their looks more, and that she doesn’t think plastic surgery is a bad thing.

Narsha and her group members Miryo and JeA even starred in an SNL Korea skit shutting down naysayers of PS. The girls covered Lady Gaga’s Poker Face, changing the title to Plastic Face. The lyrics of the song told others to be more confident and criticized the double standards in the industry regarding plastic surgeries.

6. T-Ara’s Hyomin

The members of K-pop girl group T-Ara have been involved in plastic surgery rumors throughout the years, but it was Hyomin who addressed the matter calmly during a quiz game with Sports Chosun.

When asked if they’ve gone under the knife, she answered yes, but did not mention specifics. “Society has become really appearance-oriented lately. Our job requires us to give joy and entertain a lot of people. It’s impossible to do that if you’re not pretty,” Hyomin said. “There is obviously a part of us that want to be pretty, but because the public looks at our visual, I think it’s possible to fix a few things as long as you’re not greedy in order to live up to those visual expectations.”

7. Momoland’s JooE

JooE of Momoland candidly talked about getting a nose job during a Radio Star guesting. When the hosts said it wasn’t obvious, JooE said, “That’s why I’m sad. It showed for three months, but it disappeared. I feel like I was scammed.” She revealed that she did the surgery while she was in ninth grade because her nose was “too flat.”
