2017 Shanghai International Hanmadang and festivities were held from November 3rd -6th, which included demonstrations, competitions, and seminars. Demonstration teams from the US, Korea, Ireland, Singapore, and China performed at the main event on November 5, 2017.

Jae Hun Kim Taekwon-do Institute, one of the best known Taekwon-do schools in the world, is located right here in the Boston area. The institute was established in 1974 by Grand Master Jae H. Kim who teaches daily at the Boston location. Mr. Kim’s teaching philosophy combines an analytical approach acquired through his studies at Western universities (MIT and Harvard), with special expertise developed in the East by Taekwon-do masters. This unique teaching style has garnered much success for the institute which now operates 16 schools in the US, Singapore, Korea, Ireland, and China, including our Cambridge location.
Most people practice martial arts nowadays for fitness and self defense. Continuous enrollment allows you to start your training at any time of the year, on any day of the month. We welcome beginners, as well as people with experience in Karate, Judo, Jujitsu, Kung Fu, and other martial arts. New students are given introductory lessons on an individual basis so that the student can practice at his/her own pace, and gain confidence before joining the group. The school encourages prospective students to visit and observe a class, so please call, email, or visit the school if you would like to find out more about Taekwon-do and our Cambridge-based dojang.

CLASS SCHEDULE
Masks and vaccination are strongly recommended for all students, but not strictly required. Visitors are allowed by appointment. At this time parents and siblings are not allowed to remain inside the do-jang during class. We hope to be able to welcome everyone inside again after the infection levels go down.
Grandmaster Jae Hun Kim
The Early Years
Grandmaster Jae Hun Kim was born and raised in Korea. His father, Mr. Jwah Kyum Kim, was a military officer who later became a diplomat and a cabinet member in the Korean government. Grandmaster Kim’s father served as the head of the Economic Mission to Vietnam, as well as the first Korean ambassador to Indonesia. He later returned to Korea to become a cabinet minister in charge of political affairs.
Although Grandmaster Kim’s father passed away in 1985, his presence is felt at our school as it was him, together with his son, who inspired and formulated the school tenets we abide by today: “Improvement of Mind and Body”, “Ethical Self-Conduct”, and “Unity Among Members (People)”.
Grandmaster Kim was exposed to martial arts back home in Korea at an early age. Not only was Grandmaster Kim’s father a Gumdo (sword arts) expert, but he was also influenced by his uncle – a black belt in Taekwondo – who lived in the Kim household. Studying martial arts became more important in Grandmaster Kim’s life when his parents moved to Vietnam, leaving the 11- year-old Mr. Kim behind. During that time, Grandmaster Kim practiced various martial arts, including Hapkido and boxing. However, Taekwondo remained the primary focus of his martial arts training.
As a young martial arts practitioner, Grandmaster Kim was drawn to the effectiveness and aesthetically-pleasing qualities of Taekwondo. While attending an all-boys high school of 2,800 students, he became further convinced of Taekwondo’s efficacy as a form of self-defence. There was always a “sparring session” going on in some part of the school, so you can imagine why Mr Kim appreciated the practical aspects of Taekwondo.
Moving to the West
In 1967, Grandmaster Kim moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It was there that he started his first Taekwondo club whilst working very hard as a full-time academic student. At that time, no one in Winnipeg knew what Taekwondo was, but those who witnessed it were no less than impressed. The club flourished, and eventually, Grandmaster Kim was able to invite a leading Taekwondo master, Mr Jung Tae Park, to move to Winnipeg and open a school together. Although Grandmaster Kim’s academic pursuits required much of his time when the new school opened, he continued to teach under Mr. Park’s guidance and learned from him. Today, Grandmaster Park is currently the president of the Global Tae Kwon Do Federation.
In 1971, Grandmaster Kim moved to Boston and started teaching at local universities. He also had the honour of being invited to the home of General Choi Hong Hi, the acknowledged founder of modern-day Taekwondo. After a brief review of forms, General Choi invited Grandmaster Kim to receive personal training from him. This was the greatest honour for a Taekwondo practitioner as General Choi usually only teaches a handful of instructors in his abode. Grandmaster Kim then visited General Choi periodically to receive personal instruction until 1978. It was also during this period that Grandmaster Kim, with encouragement of General Choi, opened his Taekwondo school in Boston.
USTU Team Coach
In 1979, Grandmaster Kim was selected by the USTU to coach the national team. After making numerous contributions to the advancement of Taekwondo organizations, Grandmaster Kim came to the decision to devote his remaining years to his own school and concentrate solely on teaching his students. He continues to teach every day even today, which is unusual for most Taekwondo grandmasters. Teaching is something that Mr. Kim enjoys tremendously, and he makes it a point to tell other instructors at the school that one should only teach Taekwondo if he or she thoroughly enjoys teaching all kinds of students – not only the talented ones but also those who are not as gifted.
Grandmaster Kim’s experience outside of the martial arts circle is also quite interesting. He earned a B.S. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He also served in the Korean Air Force as a Captain. The academic training and skills Grandmaster Kim obtained from MIT and Harvard led him to a successful career with General Electric where he served for many years as Vice President (GETSCO), in the Northern Pacific Operations Centre. In that position, his chief responsibility was in the marketing of aircraft engines and aerospace products to that region of the world.
Teaching Taekwondo
In 1992, Grandmaster Kim decided to return to his first love – teaching Taekwondo – on a full-time basis. He wanted to develop new instructors and to reach new communities, and provide good instruction where more people could benefit most effectively from Taekwondo training. The Jae Hun Kim Taekwondo Institute now has five locations in the greater Boston area (Ashland, Boston, Cambridge, Newton, and Quincy), Seattle, and international locations, such as in South Korea and Singapore. Grandmaster Kim received the rank of grandmaster in July 1993 from the Kukkiwon world Taekwondo headquarters in South Korea.

History – JH Kim Taekwondo Institute
JH Kim Taekwondo Institute was founded in 1974 by Grand Master Kim Jae Hun in Boston, USA, and is one of the best known Taekwondo schools in the country. The story of our school began with Grand Master Kim moving to Boston in 1971 to attend MIT. He started teaching Taekwondo at area universities, where his classes quickly filled up with eager students as people took notice of Mr. Kim’s unique teaching style. They recognised the value of Mr. Kim’s approach, which combines an analytical approach acquired through his academic studies at Western universities, with special expertise developed in the East by Taekwondo Masters.
When Grand Master Kim’s Taekwondo classes at the universities could no longer hold the burgeoning number of students coming to him from all over the Boston area, Grand Master Kim decided to open a Taekwondo school of his own, where his students could practise under his supervision day and night. Thus, the Jae Hun Kim Taekwondo Institute was born on July 15, 1974, on Brookline Avenue in Boston.
Grand Master Kim’s unique teaching style has garnered much success for the Institute, attracting Taekwondo students of all ages and backgrounds, from around the world. The JH Kim Taekwondo global network spans across the US, Europe and APAC.
