Outlaw motorcycle clubs and 1%ers
Non-outlaw motorcycle clubs.
Most often than not, the term motorcycle club brings up images of drug trafficking and violence, but many clubs are not considered to be under this outlaw, and 99% are considered not to be 1%ers. And for now, no female riders are allowed to be anything other than 99%. Many of these outlaws and riding organizations-type clubs are simply just riding family. And typically, these male-dominated M.C.s usually remain centered around a specific interest like being a veteran, police officer, or the type of bike you ride.
Folsom Freedom Riders
This club is located in the Sacramento region and is known for being open to all. The Folsom Freedom Riders have no affiliation with any of the larger outlaw motorcycle clubs and are based on the interest of cruising with others. This club has no particular interest (like specific career interests or gender), but they are affiliated with California’s Correction and Rehabilitation, meaning Peace Officers may join.
Devils Brew M.C.
Devils Brew M.C. is reasonably large and has a chapter in San Diego. This motorcycle club has more membership requirements than the Folsom Freedom Riders. This club is exclusive to male veterans and cruiser bikes only. They try to organize rides periodically.
However, the “one-percent” motorcycle clubs’ image is still an active force in the crime community. Many of these biker gangs started in the ‘60s and ‘70s and are still present today. This motorcycle club probably has one of the most notorious reputations out of any other. Back in the 60s and 70s, this club was very prominent and depicted violent motorcycle culture. Furthermore, Hells Angels used to run the country of the underground biker world. But now, their numbers have dwindled due to other motorcycle clubs surpassing them. Even with their numbers dwindling, they still heavily influence California and other states throughout the nation.

Riding motorcycles with your mates is the very essence of any bike club, it’s all good clean fun, so long as you don’t mix up the biking and comradeship with a spot of organised crime, then the club becomes a gang, the members’ outlaws and things get really heavy.
All the MC’s (Motorcycle Clubs) on the list were founded in the USA and although it’s acknowledged there are clubs all over the world, the true heart of the one-percenter* is very much ensconced in the American psyche.
There are thought to be over three hundred outlaw clubs operating in the US, here’s what could be considered the top of the pile – almost all riding the the one bike of choice, Harley Davidson.
Sons of Silence
Founded in 1966 in Colorado, they may be relatively small but what they lack in size they make up for in reputation. In addition to drug/gun operations in the Midwest and South they’ve a noticeable presence in Germany. Secretive and efficient, these guys mean business.
Vagos
1965, California, also known as the Green Nation on account of their colours. A big club with around 47 Chapters in the US and, much more recently, Australia and Sweden; they’re a natural enemy of the Hells Angles who, in the mid 60’s, were becoming established in a similar locale with comparable business interests.
Mongols
1969, California. Not quite as big as the Vagos but steadily growing. Like many of the clubs here they’re making a name for themselves in Australia which has piqued the attention of the locals, The Comanchero and The Rebels MC, themselves rapidly expanding clubs with chapters popping up across the globe. Despite alleged links to drugs, extortion and robbery the MC claim to have excluded drug addicts and criminals from the organisation as per a new code of conduct.
Pagans
1959, Maryland, this once Triumph-riding band of brothers were a legit bike club but by the early 1970’s they’d pitched themselves against the HA and began running guns. On the surface they’re relatively small in number but they’ve some very powerful friends, the Italian mafia and Aryan brotherhood among a few which is why they’re classed as one of the ‘Big 4’ by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
Bandidos
1966, Texas, one of the largest here, 2,500 plus members and operational in over 22 countries and counting. Over the past few years they’ve built up a fearsome reputation with much of the worst, turf, violence occurring in Canada, Scandinavia, Germany, Holland and Australia (with Rebels MC). A recent conflagration in Waco, Texas in May of this year with an assortment of rival clubs resulting in a gun battle and the deaths of nine people suggests that they’re alive and kicking at home too. Their motif ‘we are the people our parents warned us about’ isn’t ironic.
Outlaws/AOA
Founded way back in 1935 in Illinois this is the oldest outfit on here, their contempt of the HA is part of the modern Outlaw motto – ADIOS: Angels Die In Outlaw States – and after moving into France in 1993 became the only other club on here with a proper presence in the UK, which has resulted in at least one gang-related death. Notwithstanding various convictions for murder, theft, racketeering, drugs etc., the club maintain that they’re not a criminal organisation and learning from past indiscretions as they increase in size.
Hells Angels
Founded 1948, California the HA gained notoriety via their close association with what could be broadly described as the hippie movement of 1960’s where they rubbed shoulders with the counterculture pioneers of the day – Allen Ginsberg, Hunter S. Thompson not to mention The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. This has set the HA apart from the other one-percenter* bike clubs, despite the alleged links to organised crime and all that it entails, they’re an established part of American culture.
On the face of it they’re a slick organisation and ferociously protective of their reputation, at best (note ‘best’) they’ll take legal action to businesses that take liberties with their brand – Disney and Alexander McQueen to name but two- but don’t be in any doubt, they’re very much the real deal in one percenter terms. With over 100 chapters spread over 29 countries the Hell Angels remain the largest, best-known, bike club in the world.

Some motorcycle clubs are infamous for their connection to drugs, organized crime, and living outside the law. Others are simply groups of like-minded, law-abiding citizens who just love to ride. Regardless of the club in question, wearing its color says something about who you are, what your values are, and what kind of lifestyle you’re chasing. Here, we take a look at the 10 most popular motorcycle clubs in the United States.
1. The Outlaws
The Outlaws is one of the biggest, baddest clubs around. As one of the infamous “Big Four” outlaw motorcycle clubs, its connection with crime runs just as deep as its connection to motorcycles. From its very inception in 1935, its members have prided themselves on their status as the original ‘outlaws’ (hence the name), while their rivalry with the Hells Angels has been going on for almost as long as both clubs have been around. Based on current estimates, it’s thought there are around 200 chapters and several thousand members across the country.
2. The Pagans
The Pagans is an outlaw motorcycle club founded by Lou Dobkin in 1959. As thecheapplace.com writes, Dobkin wasn’t your typical ‘outlaw’ in some respects – during the day, he worked as a senior biochemist at the National Institute of Health. But on the weekends, he could be found racing around the highways with his denim-wearing buddies. By the late 60s, the club had evolved into your archetypal big, bad outlaw group. It’s spent most of the subsequent decades squabbling over territory with the Hells Angels. With thousands of members to its name, the club is active across Delaware, Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Maryland, Virginia, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, Rhode Island, and West Virginia. It’s also got a big presence in Puerto Rico.
3. Bikers Against Child Abuse
If you thought motorcycle club members were all mad, bad, and dangerous to know, the members of the Bikers Against Child Abuse should come as a welcome relief. The club has developed around the mission statement of helping abused children around the world. Working alongside official state authorities and philanthropic foundations, it matches abused kids to two members of the group so the child always has someone to call on if assistance is needed.
4. The Iron Order Motorcycle Club
As hotcars.com writes, the Iron Order Motorcycle Club was founded in 2004 by a group of law enforcement officers committed to upholding the law and helping people in need wherever they found them – a brotherhood of superheroes, if you will. Their carefully cultivated image took a bashing when two unarmed members of the club were shot dead by other club members, and repeated allegations of other criminal activities started to emerge. The club has been eager to suppress the rumors (for obvious reasons), and in fairness, the allegations have died down over recent years.
5. The Mongols
The Mongols were formed in 1969 by a group of Hispanic Vietnam veterans. Originally based in Montebello in the San Gabriel Valley in Los Angeles, California, the group has since spread throughout the US. It’s believed there are now between 1000 and 1500 official members in the US, along with a few hundred in Australia. Unlike most other major clubs, the Mongols have chosen to feature an actual motorbike and rider on their patch – a black on white emblem sporting a rider in shades straddling a cruiser.
6. The Vagos
The Vagos (or the ‘Green Nation’, as they’re sometimes referred to) is the biggest motorcycle club in the Southwest. They also have a foothold in Ontario, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. In total, it’s believed there are 4,000 members of the club worldwide. Like most clubs, their name is more than just a name – in Spanish, Vagos is the term used to describe those who eschew the status quo and embrace a free, nomadic lifestyle unrestricted by convention or the law.
7. The Bandidos
Formed in 1966 in Texas, the Bandidos Motorcycle Club consists of 2,400 members spread over 22 different countries around the world. Despite the cartoon character on their patch suggesting a jolly side, the Bandidos reputation is far from jovial. As a member of the Big Four, they’re known to regularly engage in turf wars with rival groups and indulge in the occasional bout of drug trafficking. Basically, when your mother warned you about the dangers of mixing with the wrong kind of crowd, she was thinking of the Bandidos.

The Hells Angels might not be the biggest motorcycle club in the US (all in all, there’s estimated to be around 2300 members, including those in other countries), but they’re inarguably the most famous. When people think of motorcycle culture, they think of the Hells Angels, and they have done ever since the club’s heyday in the 1960s. Despite numerous attempts by the authorities to bring the club down, it’s still going strong. Over 70 years after it was conceived, it’s still as infamous for its turf wars, its drug trafficking, and its reckless abandon of convention as it ever was.
9. Women in The Wind
Women aren’t exactly known for frequenting motorcycle clubs. In most clubs, they probably wouldn’t be all that welcome – which is exactly why an Ohio motorcyclist called Becky Brown decided to start her own all-women club in 1979. The result was Women in the Wind, an organization that as motorcycleisland.com notes, has now grown to encompass more than 100 chapters and over 1200 members across the US, Great Britain, and Australia. Unlike some of their male counterparts, Women in the Wind promote the acceptable side of motorcycling, with a central aim of highlighting female motorcyclists in a positive way and educating its members on road safety and motorcycle maintenance.
10. American Motorcycle Association
The American Motorcycle Association (AMA) isn’t just the largest motorcycle club in the US, it’s the largest in the entire world. With a membership that runs into the millions, the AMA is the loudest, proudest proponent of biker’s rights in the country. And unlike a lot of other groups, it prides itself on welcoming upstanding members of the community – so much so, in fact, it inadvertently gave rise to the notion of the 1% (i.e. the term used to describe the likes of the Hells Angels, the Bandidos, and other outlaw groups) when it boldly claimed that 99% of its members were law-abiding.

Vagos Motorcycle Club
One percenter motorcycle club
The Vagos Motorcycle Club, also known as the Green Nation, is a one percenter motorcycle club formed in 1965 in San Bernardino, California.[1][3] The club’s insignia is Loki, the Norse god of mischief, riding a motorcycle. Members typically wear green.[7]
The Vagos have approximately 4,000 members among 200 chapters located in the states of Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Missouri, as well as chapters throughout Europe and ten chapters located in Mexico (Baja California, Jalisco and Mexico City).[8][5][9] Vagos in Ontario, Canada were reported to have patched over to Outlaws Motorcycle Club (American Outlaws Association) in 2015 before AOA disbanded in 2018.[10] Two hundred members are in Inland Empire, where the club was started in the late 1960s.[5][11]
In 2013, the Vagos expanded to Sweden and Australia.[12]
The Vagos have support clubs spread throughout the United States, Green Machine MC, Silent Ones MC, Wicked MC, and others which support the Vagos and all it’s efforts for expansion and dominance in multiple regions. You can find multiple Green Machine MC chapters in California and other States such as Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Utah, North Carolina, Virginia, and across the border in Mexico.
History [ edit ]
During World War II, many military service men rode motorcycles and grew attached to them. The outlaw motorcycle culture was formed after World War II along Route 66 in Southern California and many clubs were formed during those years. Seven original members started the Vagos MC, with 5 members dying and the remaining 2 members founding the Vagos MC in 1965. Their colors pay homage to their founders’ Mexican heritage. The club expanded to Riverside, California and the California high desert areas, and later to Mexico, Central America and Europe.[13]
Insignia [ edit ]
A member from the Berdoo chapter (slang for San Bernardino) created a patch while he was in prison featuring Loki, the Norse god of mischief. Vago is Spanish for vagabond or wanderer. Their denim jackets sport their top rockers with their club name integrated into the middle patch,[14] and bottom rockers with their chapter’s region or state, such as “SO. CAL”,[14] “California”, or “Arizona”.[15] The middle patch “depicts a muscle-bound caricature of the Norse god of mischief, Loki, set against a green field”.[15] Loki is colored red on top of a bike with his hands holding up their club name.[16] Other patches the club wears are the number 22 (the 22nd letter of the alphabet, V, for Vagos), and a Loki head. An MF patch (meaning motorcycle family), is received by a member after a probationary period is over and the member is validated as a member of the Vagos family on the front.[1] Some members have been seen with a green swastika and an “SS” symbol on their jackets.
Official chapters [ edit ]
The Vagos have Chapters all throughout Southern California. They have Chapters in Venice beach to the High Desert of California,[5] Inland Empire which includes both Riverside County, California and San Bernardino County, California in the city of San Bernardino where they started, Azusa California San Gabriel Valley chapter, Hawthorne, Los Angeles and San Diego.[17] They also have chapters in the states of Hawaii, Oregon, Nevada, and Utah Arizona, Georgia, New York, Missouri, New Mexico, Idaho, Illinois also the country of Mexico, Mexicali BC Mother Chapter, Tijuana chapter, Tecate Centro, Rumorosa, Rosarito beach, México City, Azcapotzalco.[18] Europe,[4] Canadá, in Central America in Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras.
Vagos MC criminal allegations and incidents [ edit ]
Hemet traps [ edit ]
On March 17, 2010, amid allegations that Vagos members had fabricated home-made booby traps to maim and kill police detectives in Hemet, California,[19] police arrested at least 30 Vagos members in a multi-state raid of Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and California, involving 400 police officers from 60 law enforcement agencies. The police raided 73 locations in Southern California, seizing weapons and drugs, and discovered a meth lab.[5][20] The raids were the result of several incidents involving booby traps where the club was implicated:
On December 31, 2009, the unmarked headquarters of the Hemet Gang Task Force was filled with natural gas, which had been routed into the building through a hole drilled in the roof. Two task force members had detected the gas and backed away without triggering the explosion. The day before that attack, a Vagos funeral was held at a church next to the office.
On February 23, 2010, a task force member opened a security gate outside the building, causing a homemade zip gun attached to the gate to fire, nearly hitting his head.
On March 5, a task force member who had parked an unmarked police car in front of a convenience store in Hemet found a homemade pipe bomb hidden underneath the vehicle.
California and federal authorities announced a $200,000 reward for information on these cases.[21] California Attorney General Jerry Brown called the attempts “urban terrorism.”[22] Riverside County District Attorney Rod Pacheco said that Vagos members posed an “extreme threat” to law enforcement officers and were notorious for trying to “infiltrate” public safety agencies, by obtaining sworn or non-sworn positions and working undercover to obstruct and dismantle police investigations.[5][23]
In March 2011, the club sued Riverside County law enforcement for defamation and damages caused by implicating the group to the attacks on the Hemet police officers.[24] On August 1, Riverside County settled the lawsuit, and cleared the club of any involvement with the attacks on the officers. Meanwhile, they had arrested two men that had no ties to the club. The club’s attorney, Joseph Yanny, stated he was pleased with the result: “This was never about money. What was important was that the club clear its name and take this shadow off them.”[25][26]
Nugget Casino shooting [ edit ]
On September 23, 2011, Vagos members were involved in a shooting at John Ascuaga’s Nugget in Sparks, Nevada, where Jeffrey Pettigrew, the president of the San Jose, California chapter of Hells Angels was killed, and Vagos members were wounded. The next day, a Vagos member was wounded at a rally by a drive-by shooter. On September 29, police arrested Ernesto Manuel Gonzales, a Vagos member, at the University of California, San Francisco, for killing Pettigrew.[27][28] On December 7, police announced that they had arrested Gary Rudnick, the vice-president of the Los Angeles chapter of Vagos, for instigating the fight that led to the shooting.[29] Rudnick later pleaded guilty to second degree murder in a bargaining agreement.[30] The trial for the two Vagos members, as well as a Hells Angels member who fired at a crowd, was held on October 29, 2012.[31]
Other incidents [ edit ]
In 1974, four Vagos members were convicted and sentenced to death for murdering University of New Mexico student William Velten. The four, Richard Greer, Ronald Keine, Clarence Smith and Thomas Gladish, spent 17 months on death row, but during the appeals process, Kerry Rodney Lee confessed to the murder.[32]
In October 1998, police arrested more than a dozen Vagos members for kidnapping, drug and weapons crimes, following a two-year undercover investigation. In September 2004, state police arrested 26 members and seized more than $125,000 in cash, drugs and guns. On March 9, 2006, law enforcement conducted “Operation 22 Green”, which involved 700 personnel from Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and local police and sheriff’s departments. The operation resulted in the arrest of 25 Vagos members and associates for violating firearms and drugs policies. It was “one of the largest coordinated law enforcement probes ever conducted in Southern California”. The investigators seized 95 illegal firearms, illegal drugs, $6,000 cash, and two stolen motorcycles.[33] An ATF agent called the group a “ruthless criminal bike gang” that deals in “guns, drugs, and death.”[20] Operation 22 Green and its lead-up were used as the basis for the first season of the television series Gangland Undercover.
In December 2007, police arrested six Vagos members for “charges of first-degree burglary, second-degree robbery, coercion and second-degree kidnapping” that occurred in August 2007. The victim had announced he was leaving the club, but suffered a beating at the Custom Motorcycle auto shop in Grants Pass, Oregon, and was then taken to his home where they attempted to rob him they failed.[34]
Three Vagos members were arrested on June 9 and 10, 2009, and charged with sexually assaulting a woman in San Jose, California.[35] Police investigators told the San Jose Mercury News that the victim met the three men in a nightclub on May 4, 2009, and that they had offered to drive her home, but instead they took her to the Vagos clubhouse on Kings Row where she was beaten and sexually assaulted.[36][37]
On August 13, 2011 law enforcement authorities reported that the Vagos Motorcycle Club and the Galloping Goose Motorcycle Club were involved in a shootout which shut down traffic on I-44 near Waynesville, Missouri. The local 9-1-1 center received about 20 calls, which reported that approximately 20 men were fighting, and that shots had been fired.[38]

Many are clubs based on various points of interest that leaders can broadly organize into the following categories:
Outlaw motorcycle clubs and 1%ers
Non-outlaw motorcycle clubs.
Most often than not, the term motorcycle club brings up images of drug trafficking and violence, but many clubs are not considered to be under this outlaw, and 99% are considered not to be 1%ers. And for now, no female riders are allowed to be anything other than 99%. Many of these outlaws and riding organizations-type clubs are simply just riding family. And typically, these male-dominated M.C.s usually remain centered around a specific interest like being a veteran, police officer, or the type of bike you ride.
Folsom Freedom Riders
This club is located in the Sacramento region and is known for being open to all. The Folsom Freedom Riders have no affiliation with any of the larger outlaw motorcycle clubs and are based on the interest of cruising with others. This club has no particular interest (like specific career interests or gender), but they are affiliated with California’s Correction and Rehabilitation, meaning Peace Officers may join.
Devils Brew M.C.
Devils Brew M.C. is reasonably large and has a chapter in San Diego. This motorcycle club has more membership requirements than the Folsom Freedom Riders. This club is exclusive to male veterans and cruiser bikes only. They try to organize rides periodically.
However, the “one-percent” motorcycle clubs’ image is still an active force in the crime community. Many of these biker gangs started in the ‘60s and ‘70s and are still present today. Many more significant motorcycle gangs have established themselves as a dominating force of violence and are slowly spreading to new areas. In California, three motorcycle gangs influence California: Vagos, Mongols, and Hells Angels.
Vagos – 1%
This outlaw motorcycle club is one of the largest, with as many as 4,000 members. In California, they are more active in Southern California near the borders of Arizona and Mexico. Authorities know them for drug trafficking and producing, specifically methamphetamines. Besides, they have connections with other “outlaw” motorcycle clubs in Mexico. Since being founded in the 1960s, they continued their extreme hate towards the Hell’s Angels.
Mongols – 1%
They are present in Southern California, but their membership is less than half of Vagos. This club has a heavy Latino and Native American presence, so they have built connections with other street gangs in the area. In addition to street gangs, they have allied with other prominent motorcycle gangs to compete against the Hell’s Angels.
Hells Angels – 1%
This motorcycle club probably has one of the most notorious reputations out of any other. Back in the 60s and 70s, this club was very prominent and depicted violent motorcycle culture. Furthermore, Hells Angels used to run the country of the underground biker world. But now, their numbers have dwindled due to other motorcycle clubs surpassing them. Even with their numbers dwindling, they still heavily influence California and other states throughout the nation.
