Lyrics
I was distracted
and in traffic
I didn’t feel it
when the earthquake happened

but it really got me thinkin’
were you out drinkin’
were you in the living room
chillin’ watchin’ television
ah it’s been a year now
think I’ve figured out how
how to let you go and let
communication die out
I know you know we know you weren’t down for forever and it’s fine
I know you know we know we weren’t meant for each other and it’s fine
but if the world was ending
you’d come over right
you’d come over and you’d stay the night
would you love me for the hell of it
all our fears would be irrelevant
if the world was ending
you’d come over right
the sky’d be falling and I’d hold you tight
and there wouldn’t be a reason why
we would even have to say goodbye
if the world was ending
you’d come over right
Right?
If the world was ending
You’d come over right
Right?
I tried to imagine
your reaction
didn’t scare me when the earthquake happened
But it really got me thinkin’
that night we went drinkin’
stumbled in the house
and didn’t make it past the kitchen
ah it’s been a year now
think I’ve figured out how
how to think about you
without it rippin’ my heart out
I know you know we know you weren’t down for forever and it’s fine
I know you know we know we weren’t meant for each other and it’s fine

Song by JP Saxe featuring Julia Michaels

“If the World Was Ending” is a song by Canadian singer JP Saxe, featuring vocals of American singer Julia Michaels. The song was released by Arista Records on October 17, 2019, through digital download and streaming formats as the lead single from his second EP Hold It Together.[2] It is also included on his debut studio album Dangerous Levels of Introspection.[3] The song was nominated for Song of the Year at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, being Saxe’s first nomination, and Michaels’ third nomination.

Background [ edit ]

Speaking to Billboard, Julia Michaels said “I discovered JP Saxe’s music and posted about him around the same time he was listening to Inner Monologue. Since we were fans of each other’s music, we got together for a writing session.” Saxe added “Writing this song with Julia was one of the most creative experiences of my life. We wrote it the day we met and recorded it that same day.”[4] Michaels shared “The song is about that person in your life who you would come back to if the world was ending, when nothing else matters and there is nothing left to hold you back.”

Regarding the sentiments evoked in the composition, Saxe expressed, “Hopefully we are looking for our sense of compassion. My hope is that it’s resonating because it connects people to the part of themselves that wants to put love first, that wants to reach out to that family member they haven’t talked to in a while, or that friend”.[5]

The duo recruited producer Finneas to finalize their piece. “We wanted to find a producer who was going to take up the integrity and emotional contour of our original demo and bring out what was already there. We put together our dream list of producers, and when we reached out to Finneas, he loved the song and told us he wanted to produce it. We were very excited for him to be part of it because he has such unique instincts when it comes to production. And he wanted what we wanted, which was to take the feeling of the song that was there and bring it out and accentuate that emotional world”.[5]

Composition [ edit ]

“If the World Was Ending” is a piano ballad, played in the keys of A minor and F minor at a tempo of 75 beats per minute. During the chorus, Saxe and Michaels are heard singing the lines over layers of backing vocals. The instrumental consists of a piano, played by Finneas, and gospel vocals.[4] In the second and final chorus, violins are played.

About the lyrics [ edit ]

Throughout the song, JP Saxe, together with Julia Michaels, reminisces over a past and flawed relationship, hopefully it can start again with the best intentions and a good amount of patience. Saxe gives audiences a look into the piece’s lyrics on Genius.com: “Julia scribed the lyrics at the end of the chorus. ‘And there wouldn’t be a reason why we would even have to say goodbye,’ stabbed me in the heart when she first said it.” Pondering the feeling that we don’t have to wish each other farewell assures us all would be well. However, the reason for this lack of departure is dark and integrated into the removal of all consequences by the universe. Two situations exist in the song. The beginning situation happens amid a harmless earthquake. The imagined fantasy that occurs later asks, ‘if everything did go to ruin, what would transpire?’ The word: ‘right.’ holds a plethora of weight. It holds the doubt, hope, the question, ‘are you with me on this?’. The term functions as the period mark following preceding events.”[6]

Commercial performance [ edit ]

On the Hot 100 it debuted on 96 on April 11, 2020. It peaked at number 27 on the chart dated September 12, 2020, giving Saxe’s first and Michaels’s second top 40.[7]

Music videos [ edit ]

The music video, directed by Jason Lester, was released on October 17, 2019. After the Emergency Alert System warns of a “significant environmental event” hitting the United States, the video cuts to two lovers – JP Saxe and Julia – reviewing their last text conversation. As the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration instructs citizens to seek refuge in their nearest fallout shelter, JP reads how Julia needed some “space.” Suddenly, with extinction looming, the two reevaluate their priorities and are forced to decide just how they want to spend their last few hours on Earth.[8]

Another music video titled “Spanglish Version” featuring Evaluna Montaner released on April 3, 2020.[9]

The third video of the song was titled “If the World Was Ending (In Support of Doctors Without Borders)” featuring music artists was released on April 30, 2020.[10] Sam Smith, H.E.R., Alessia Cara, Niall Horan, Keith Urban and Finneas (the song’s producer) are among the long list of names who sing Saxe and Michaels’ duet. Saxe explained that the collaboration was inspired by covers of the song he saw online, and he then texted the featured artists to ask if they’d want to get involved.[11] Each artist filmed their part on their phones from their homes while self-isolating. All proceeds benefit Doctors Without Borders, where one of Saxe’s friends worked, and the video ends with a special message from a participating doctor about the impact of COVID-19 on countries where many of the doctors are stationed.[12]

“We are so grateful for the incredible work being done by those on the frontlines during this global pandemic,” Saxe and Michaels said in a joint statement. “At a time when it can sometimes feel like ‘the world is ending,’ we thank all of the healthcare workers, first responders, and essential workers who are helping so many people in need. Please stay home, stay safe (and don’t actually go over!)”.[13]

UK Singles Chart records and statistics

The UK Singles Chart was first compiled in 1969. However the records and statistics listed here date back to 1952 because the Official Charts Company counts a selected period of the New Musical Express chart (only from 1952 to 1960) and the Record Retailer chart from 1960 to 1969 as predecessors for the period prior to 11 February 1969, where multiples of competing charts coexisted side by side. For example, the BBC compiled its own chart based on an average of the music papers of the time; many songs announced as having reached number one on BBC Radio and Top of the Pops prior to 1969 may not be listed here as chart-toppers since they do not meet the legacy criteria of the Charts Company.

Number one hits [ edit ]

Most number ones [ edit ]

The following is a list of all the acts who are on eight or more UK number one songs with an individual credit (meaning, the main artist or named separately as a featured artist – being part of a group does not count towards an individual’s total).[1]

Simply playing or singing on a single without credit will not count, or the top positions would almost certainly belong to session musicians such as Clem Cattini who is reported to have played drums on over 40 number ones.[2]

Most weeks at number one by artist [ edit ]

Most weeks at number one by single [ edit ]

The record for most non-consecutive weeks at number one is 18 by Frankie Laine’s “I Believe” in 1953. It spent nine weeks at number one, dropped down for a week, returned to number one for six weeks, dropped down for a further week and returned to number one for a third time for three weeks.

The longest unbroken run at number one is “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You” by Bryan Adams, which spent 16 consecutive weeks in 1991.

Ed Sheeran is the only artist to ever have multiple songs spend 10 or more weeks at the top of the charts, achieving the feat with both “Shape of You” in 2017 and “Bad Habits” in 2021.

Below is a table of all singles that have spent 10 or more weeks at the top of the charts:

Note: Songs denoted with an asterisk (*) spent non-consecutive weeks at number one.[3]

Self-replacement at number one [ edit ]

Since the inception of the UK Singles Chart in 1952 only seven acts have replaced themselves at the top of the UK charts with exactly the same billing (as opposed to any named artist, for example ‘Cliff Richard and the Shadows’ and ‘The Shadows’ have had back to back number ones on four occasions):

In addition, Ariana Grande is the first female artist to replace herself, and the first artist to replace herself at Number 1 for two consecutive weeks.[5]

Most consecutive number ones [ edit ]

The Beatles had 11 consecutive number ones with official releases on Parlophone between 1963 (“From Me To You”) and 1966 (“Yellow Submarine” / “Eleanor Rigby”), though releases of archive material from their previous record company also charted during this time.[6]

Most consecutive number ones from chart debut [ edit ]

Spice Girls became the first British music act and girl group to have their first six singles reach number one on the UK singles chart between 1996 and 1997 with “Wannabe” in July, 1996 to “Too Much” in December, 1997.

Westlife became the first music act to have their first seven singles (“Swear It Again”, “If I Let You Go”, “Flying Without Wings”, “I Have a Dream / “Seasons in the Sun”, “Fool Again”, “Against All Odds” & “My Love”) to reach number one from 1999 to 2000.[7] It took Westlife just over 18 months to achieve their first seven number ones, faster than any other music act.

Most songs to debut at Number 1 on the chart [ edit ]

Acts with the most songs to debut at Number 1 on the Official singles chart. Westlife claim the most Number 1 debuts on the Official Singles Chart, with all 14 of their chart-toppers landing there in their first week.[8]

Lowest selling number one [ edit ]

The lowest weekly sale for a number one single is 17,694 copies held by Orson’s “No Tomorrow” in 2006.[9]

The addition of downloads to the UK charts meant that singles could reach number one with no physical copy being released. The first single to achieve this was Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” in early 2006. Since 2014, audio streaming has been included in the calculation of chart position, so it is now possible for a single to reach number one without selling any copies (if it were only available on streaming services). In the week ending 24 September 2015, “What Do You Mean?” by Justin Bieber became the first number one with over half of its chart sales made up of streaming points, with sales of 30,000 and 36,000 points from 3.6 million streams.

Since the incorporation of streaming into the singles chart, the Official Charts Company have continued to compile a sales only chart. In week ending 27 April 2017 “Sign of the Times” by Harry Styles became the first number one in the sales-only chart to sell less than “No Tomorrow” by Orson, with 16,686 copies.[10]

Longest/Shortest song to reach number one [ edit ]

In terms of a song’s running length, “All Around the World” by Oasis (1998) at 9 minutes and 38 seconds is the longest song to reach No.1. “What Do You Want?” by Adam Faith at 1 minute 35 seconds (1959) is the shortest.[11]

Non-English language number-ones [ edit ]

Acts to occupy the top two [ edit ]

In addition, in the final week that Justin Bieber was at No. 1 and No. 2 with “Love Yourself” and “Sorry”, “What Do You Mean” was at No. 3. For the first three weeks that Ed Sheeran was at No. 1 and No. 2 with “Shape of You” and “Galway Girl”, “Castle on the Hill” was at No. 3, and for the first of these three weeks Sheeran’s “Perfect”, “New Man” and “Happier” were at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 respectively.[13]

Most weeks in the chart by a single:

Top 100: “Mr Brightside” by The Killers (322 weeks)

Top 75: “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran (130 weeks)

Top 40: “Fairytale of New York” by The Pogues featuring Kirsty MacColl (79 weeks)

Sales [ edit ]

Fastest selling singles [ edit ]

The fastest selling single in chart history is “Candle in the Wind 1997” by Elton John which sold 1.55 million copies in its first week (it sold 658,000 on the first day of release, 13 September 1997).[15]

The fastest selling debut single is “Anything Is Possible/Evergreen” by Will Young, which sold 1.11 million copies in its first week on sale.[16] Publicity had built up due to the televised talent contest Pop Idol with 8.7 million people phoning in to vote for the finalists.[17]

The fastest selling single by a girl group is the Spice Girls “2 Become 1” which sold over 462,000 copies during its first week on sale and over 763,000 copies in a fortnight. In total, the single sold over 1.2 million copies to date.[18]

Biggest-selling singles artists [ edit ]

Artists with references have been updated as the original list was published by the Official Charts Company during 2012. This means that positions on this list may not be 100% accurately reflected as most of the artists are still active and releasing new singles. This includes all singles (solo, duets and as featuring artists) and in all formats (vinyl, cassette, CD, digital). All singles with collaborations are counted several times on the list.

Outside number one [ edit ]

Acts to peak across the entire top ten [ edit ]

Biggest selling non-number one [ edit ]

The record is held by Maroon 5 with their 2011 single, “Moves Like Jagger”, with 1.55 million copies sold. The song peaked at number two for seven weeks.[27] The record was formerly held by Wham! for their 1984 Christmas release, “Last Christmas” / “Everything She Wants”, until it finally charted at the top spot in 2021.

The biggest selling single to peak at number three is New Order’s “Blue Monday”, which has sold over a million copies.[28] However, it garnered its total sales via two further remixes of the track, meaning its one million sales are attributed over all three releases. The biggest selling release to peak at number three is Ed Sheeran’s “The A Team”, which has sold over 1,067,000 copies since its 2011 release.[29] The biggest selling single never to make the top 5 is “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol, which peaked at number 6 and has sold more copies than “The A Team”.[30] The biggest selling single not to reach the top 10 is I’m Yours by Jason Mraz with sales over 1.8m and never charted higher than No. 11.

You Make My Dreams by Hall & Oates has never charted in the top 100; despite this, it has over 1 million chart sales, being certified 2× Platinum.

Downloads [ edit ]

Downloads grew steadily in popularity after first being integrated into the chart in 2005. In early September 2004, the UK Official Download Chart was launched, and a new live recording of Westlife’s “Flying Without Wings” was the first number-one.[43] The first number one to chart without ever receiving a UK physical release was Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida” in June 2008. As of 2012, very few songs are given a physical release, and almost the entire chart is released solely on digital download.

On 22 June 2008, both songs in the top two were there on downloads alone:[44]

On 31 August 2008, the top three were download-only at the time:[45]

On 1 March 2009, the top four were all download-only:[46]

By 13 February 2010, the whole top 9 consisted of download-only songs:[47]

Notes [ edit ]

^ This record was previously held by D-Block Europe, who surrendered their claim to The 1975 by reaching No.6 with “Overseas”, their 31st hit, with their run of 30 hits failing to reach the top 10 an all time record.

JP Saxe on Julia Michaels Duet ‘If the World Was Ending’: ‘It’s Helping People Connect’

It all started with a DM. Julia Michaels and JP Saxe, the latter then newly signed to Arista Records, had yet to meet each other last year, when the former shared a clip on her Instagram of Saxe’s 2018 song “25 in Barcelona.”

Within minutes, the two started DMing to schedule a writing session.

Explore See latest videos, charts and news JP Saxe Julia Michaels See latest videos, charts and news

“Coincidentally, I was on a road trip with friends talking about how I thought Julia had revolutionized pop music,” Saxe says of the artist who broke through with her top 15 Billboard Hot 100 hit “Issues” in 2017. “And as I’m having this conversation, I get a notification on my phone saying Julia has mentioned me in a story.”

The pair linked up in Los Angeles last summer and wrote “If the World Was Ending,” an apocalyptic love song about a past relationship gone wrong. Saxe and Michaels then recruited Billie Eilish‘s main collaborator (and brother), Finneas, to produce the track that arrived last October.

Though the song was written months before the onset of COVID-19 and subsequent social distancing, it’s now making its mark on Billboard charts. It debuted at No. 96 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated April 11, earning Saxe his first entry, and ranks at No. 73 in its third week. The duet is also scaling the top 20 of both the Adult Pop Songs and Adult Contemporary radio airplay charts.

Saxe and Michaels wrote “If the World Was Ending” after the Los Angeles earthquakes last July 4 and 5, the latter of which marked the biggest in the region in 20 years. However, the song has taken on new resonance as much of the world has been forced to stay indoors to help reduce the spread of the coronavirus. Listeners have begun uploading their own covers of the song or used it on TikTok, where it’s been featured in over 300,000 videos.

Michaels muses that the song’s lyrics have grown more meaningful amid mass quarantining. “I think now more than ever I want to be surrounded by the people that I love,” she says.

“If the World Was Ending” is from Saxe’s six-song EP Hold It Together (released Feb. 7), which he says previews a full album due this year, with tracks from it set to be released over the next few months. “It’s me trying to get to the root of what it feels like to be me,” he says.

Billboard chatted further with Saxe about the song’s origin, how he and Michaels got Finneas on board to produce it and more.

How quickly did you and Julia write “If the World Was Ending” after her Instagram shout-out?

I tried to keep it cool, but was obviously very excited. Shortly after that, we met in the studio and wrote it the day we met.

What was it like being in the studio with her?

Magical. I think she’s the best songwriter in the world. And sitting beside her at the piano was one of the most mystical, creative experiences of my life.

You and Julia wrote this song together before COVID-19 and social distancing. Where did the inspiration for the song come from?

After the earthquakes in Los Angeles, we were talking about how our decision-making would look if we were in a world-ending situation, what that would feel like, what we would want, who we would want to be with. The song itself is very much the kind of conversation we were having.

Why do you think the song is resonating with people?

Hopefully everyone is looking for their sense of compassion right now. My hope is that it’s resonating because it connects people to the part of themselves that wants to put love first, that wants to reach out to that family member they haven’t talked to in a while, or that friend.

I’ve heard stories about the song inspiring someone to reconnect with a family member that maybe they hadn’t spoken to in a while. The fact that it’s helping people connect to one another in a time like this means the world to me.

It’s a silver lining during this period — that there’s a song about togetherness and connecting with one another. I think people need that right now.

I totally agree. As an artist, you hope for cultural relevance with your music, but this is not at all what I imagined or would have ever wanted. So, at first it was a little conflicting to see the song resonating during this time, because it is such a terrifying time for so many. I wasn’t sure how to feel about it. But ultimately what I’ve realized is that the song is making people feel closer to themselves and closer to the people they love because of the emotion that’s in the song.

How did Finneas become involved as the song’s producer?

It was engineered by a producer/engineer named Benjamin Rice, who is unbelievable. He did the original demo, which is just Julia and my voices and the piano. Since we loved the demo so much, we wanted to find a producer who was going to take up the integrity and emotional contour of that demo and bring out what was already there. We put together our dream list of producers, and when we reached out to Finneas, he loved the song and told us he wanted to produce it.

We were very excited for him to be part of it because he has such unique instincts when it comes to production. And he wanted what we wanted, which was to take the feeling of the song that was there and bring it out and accentuate that emotional world.

The song is being used in so many TikTok videos. Do you have any favorites that you’ve seen?

One I saw was an appreciation for nurses who can’t stay home from work during this time, and our song is on in the background. It was honestly one of the most moving things I’ve seen the song connected to because it’s such an important element of the moment: recognizing the gratitude we need to have for the people in our society who are allowing us to continue to function and are keeping us alive.

It takes a particularly special kind of song to capture people’s imagination, especially for an extended period of time.

These days, there’s so much music in the world (which isn’t a bad thing, of course) it has to be a truly iconic track to rise above the parapet.

Over the years, however, we’ve heard earworms and anthems of gargantuan proportions that have dominated charts across the world. It takes some doing to reign supreme at the summit of UK charts, especially.

But there are an elite few tracks that have had a sustained period of chart success, remaining at the top for over ten consecutive weeks or more.

That said, let’s put a spotlight on five of the longest-running number 1s ever:

1. Whitney Houston – ‘I Will Always Love You’ (10 weeks)

Dolly Parton’s tear-jerking country ballad was given a new lease of life by Whitney Houston when she covered the song for her 1992 film debut The Bodyguard, which to this day remains the biggest-selling movie soundtrack of all time.

Whitney’s imperious vocal performance kept the song at the top of the UK charts for a total of ten weeks at the tail end of 1992, seeing out the year on top before it was knocked off by 2 Unlimited’s dance-pop track ‘No Limit’.

One thing’s for sure, we will always love this song.

2. Queen – ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (14 weeks)

You’d be fibbing if you hadn’t belting this operatic rock masterpiece out at the top of your lungs at some point in your life, either in a crowd, with friends, or at least at home whilst nobody’s watching.

Queen’s first ever UK number one single was so audacious and so catchy, it made household names out of Freddie Mercury and co.

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ spent a total of 14 weeks at the top of the UK charts, firstly in 1975 for nine weeks then in 1991 after Freddie tragically passed away.

A legendary song fit for a legendary band.

3. Wet Wet Wet – ‘Love Is All Around’ (15 weeks)

Wet Wet Wet’s most instantly recognisable song, and soundtrack for 1994 rom-com Four Weddings And A Funeral, is forever synonymous with Hugh Grant’s floppy hairdo and unassuming charm.

The film’s director Richard Curtis approached the band’s frontman Marti Pellow about covering a song for the soundtrack, and he chose ‘Love Is All Around’ (originally by 60s rock band The Troggs of ‘Wild Thing’ fame) as he knew he could make it his own.

And he certainly did, seeing the song reach number one in the UK charts and remain there for 15 weeks.

4. Bryan Adams – ‘Everything I Do (I Do It For You)’ (16 weeks)

Canadian singer-songwriter Bryan Adams was arguably more renowned for fist-pumping anthems like ‘Run To You’ and ‘Summer of 69’ that embodied the reckless abandon of young love.

That was until he wrote epic ballad ‘Everything I Do (I Do It For You)’ in 1991 which reigned over global airwaves and sat atop the UK charts for a consecutive 16 weeks, a record that’s yet to be beaten.

It became the soundtrack for another Kevin Costner movie in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, becoming a box office hit for a box office film.

5. Frankie Laine – ‘I Believe’ (18 weeks)

A stirring song that conjures the same kind of emotion even today, Italian-American crooner Frankie Laine’s mammoth song ‘I Believe’ holds the record of most weeks at UK number one.

As 1953’s biggest selling single, Frankie Laine reclaimed the number one spot despite being knocked off twice, hitting the number one spot on three occasions despite being knocked off twice.

Spending a total of 18 weeks at the summit of the charts, no single has ever beaten this record held by one of the all-time great singers. It’ll take some doing!

Title: If The World Was EndingArtists: JP Saxe Show: Weekly

ABC News Radio

Nirav PatelAfter becoming a quarantine anthem, “If the World Was Ending” by JP Saxe and Julia Michaels, has finally hit the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. JP says the milestone is a “validation,” but it’s not the most important “metric of success.”

“The trajectory of this song has been serendipitous and strange and new for me,” the Canadian artist tells ABC Audio. “I mean, we wrote the song in July of last year. So we had no concept of the eventual relevance that it would have.”

“Does it going top 40 matter to me?” he wonders. “It matters to me because it feels like a validation of what I’ve always believed as a songwriter: If you’ll be honest in music, you can relate to more people than if you try and ‘contrive’ some version of relatability.”

“So that feels like a nice encouragement…to see that metric of success, ” JP notes. “But ultimately, the success that matters the most to me is knowing that it’s a song that’s giving some peace and solace, in a time when putting love before everything else is a message that is needed.”

JP and Julia, who are a couple in real life, gave an emotional performance of the duet on the MTV VMAs last weekend, which was filmed in L.A. in front of a green screen.

“We had to get tested before going on set, so everyone on set was was COVID-free, and still, everyone was wearing the face guards and the masks,” he says.

“It was the first performance we’ve done [since quarantine] that wasn’t in our living room,” he notes. “It was my first awards show, which was incredibly special. But I’ve had so many firsts in the last eight months!”

JP’s new single “A Little Bit Yours” is out now.
