I am Sam (South Korea, 2007); aka I’m your Teacher – Review

I am Sam

aka I’m your Teacher

Story: Jang Yi-san (Yang Dong-geun) is a shy and a little bit featherbrained looking teacher who has his heart in the right place. One day he accidentally runs into the beautiful schoolgirl Eun-byul (Park Min-yeong), who he tells his opinion about her in one of his more brave moments. Since Eun-byul’s father Yoo Jae-gon (Park Joon-gyoo), a rich gangster boss, finally wants his daughter to graduate and once again is looking for a teacher for her, of which she has already driven away a lot because of her ways of acting, his daughter proposes Jang to be her new teacher. Jae-gon offers the teacher a huge amount of money and also leaves no doubt that Jang has no other choice but to accept the deal. Henceforth Jang has to live in the same house as Eun-byul and the girl starts to take a liking to the teacher. However, at school the two have to pretend that they don’t know each other. Jang’s feelings for the girl grow as well, although he is just mustering up the courage to start a relationship with his colleague Shin So-yi (Son Tae-yeong). At the same time Eun-byul starts to make friends with her classmate Sa-kang (Park Chae-kyeong) and also manages to win over the introverted but feared Moo-shin (Choi Seung-hyeon). But those two are slowly getting behind the secret relationship between Jang and Eun-byul while Mr. Kim (Park Jae-jeong), the right hand of gangster boss Jae-gon who is actually promised Eun-byul’s hand when she is old enough, can’t continue watching the relationship between the teacher and Eun-byul become more than just simple friendship.

Review: Romantic-comedy-series that take place at school somehow have some kind of advantage. It’s not just that a classroom always gives a lot of room for comedy and off-beat characters, but also because school stands is a microcosm in which the students already get a taste of what’s waiting for them out there in the real world. “I am Sam” therefore also touches subjects like becoming an adult, yet without a doubt puts his focus on the love story between teacher and student. But wait a second! A love story between a minor and a teacher?! Can you actually do that? Sure you can if you make it in a politically correct way like here. The series itself is based on a manga with the title “Very Private Lesson” which goes into a little bit different direction. That is because there the schoolgirl makes extreme use of her feminine features in order to drive the teacher crazy. Of course, she also has feelings for him. Sounds interesting as well, but naturally that isn’t something for a well-behaved Saturday afternoon show like “I am Sam”. Nonetheless, the show always manages to score where it needs to.

It’s a bit surprising to see Yang Dong-geun in the role of the shy teacher who looks incredibly helpless most of the time and most likely because of that also aroused Eun-byul’s interest. Yang has had roles in “Address Unknown” or “Fighter in the Wind” before whereas he could show some impressive physical performance especially in the latter. In “I am Sam”, however, he needs to move around rather clumsily and in the worst cases even gets beaten up without defending himself at all. Although you can never fully warm up to him he still manages to make the chemistry between him and Eun-byul work out just fine and that’s what’s essential in such a series.

Park Min-yeong plays the spoiled, sassy girl Eun-byul that can be pretty exhausting at times. For Jang as well as for the viewer. And that’s just how she is supposed to be which makes Park deliver a satisfying portrayal as well. Of course she also has that certain cuteness factor to her which always makes us want to pinch her cheeks.

How are things concering the love story, though? Unfortunately, Jang oftentimes gives the impression as if he has no real interest in women. His story with female teacher So-yi is almost sad to look at. He never has the courage to talk to her and this even though he can be pretty sure from a certain point onwards that she is into him as well. Of course, the complicated living conditions of the teacher are a reason for that as well as it is difficult for him to invite So-yi over when Eun-byul is living at his place. Inevitably things are heading for a love triangle but Jang never shows the inner struggle of being forced to choose between So-yi and Eun-byul. Maybe that was once again the “morally correct” decision of the scriptwriters to never make Jang consider starting a relationship with the schoolgirl. He keeps So-yi guessing for quite a while so that we really have to feel pity for her. Here one typical flaw of such drama series comes to the foreground once again because many problems arise from Jang not saying how things really are.

Somehow you have to get the drama into the show and this doesn’t work if not for making Jang be quiet when he could clear up misunderstandings directly. Does this really have to be that way? Here a bit more originality would have been nice. Also a problem is that somewhere throughout the middle of the series the sails lost their wind and the subject gets repetitive. So why not cut down the show to 12 episodes? The show really would have been better off that way as the last episodes can be more captivating again and surprisingly especially the ending manages to be satisfying. In fact we aren’t really expecting something like that from romantic series anymore which is why this gets a deserved thumbs-up.

However, if this would just have been a romantic series I probably would have refrained from watching it. Of course the show really gets interesting because of its humor and the characters that can radiate a lot of charisma. Moments like those in which the gangster boss and Mr. Kim are visiting Jang while unfortunately at the same time So-yi is present as well leading to Jang introducing the gangster boss as his father and Mr. Kim as his brother score with their situational comedy.

The classroom is also constantly stage for some funny scenes as a lot of illustrious characters are gathered there. The supporting characters get some time every now and then, too, and so we also grow fond of the loyal friend of Eun-byul, Sa-kang, only Moo-shin is somehow a problem. He is the quiet and cool guy who likes to read and yet wins every fight. Of course all the girls are into him and we ask ourselves: Why? There are boys in the same class that are more good-looking and so you can’t help but feel that the show is deliberately playing with the hype around actor Choi Seung-hyeon aka T.O.P from the hip-hop group Big Bang. Girls aren’t into quiet guys. But aside from such little problems the cast proves to be good in the supporting roles as well and the different side stories are implemented into the main plot quite well so that we also get to see the students’ problems when they clash with the world of adults. There is even some surprisingly nice worldly wisdom that has found its way into the series.

“I am Sam” therefore manages to entertain most of the time and to win us over for the characters. And in fact the show is by far not as corny as many others but instead brings a fresh breeze along with it. Still, you have to deal with Korean pop ballads constantly kicking in which at some points even remind us of annoying jingles. Apart from that the dramatic and the romantic scenes as well are convincing and the humor shows to advantage thanks to the manga-like characters.

By the way, those who ask themselves who this Sam from the show’s title is will get the answer now since we see ourselves as an internet site that works in the name of education. “Sam” is the contracted form of the Korean word for teacher, a slang expression. That is also the reason for the alternative title. With “I am Sam” you can’t do much wrong and the show avoids most typical genre problems without ever straying too much from the pattern. At the end the series proves to be extremely funny and entertaining. You can’t demand more than that.

I am sam kdrama Review

Romantic-comedy-series that take place at school somehow have some kind of benefit. This is not because a classroom provides a lot more room for comedy and offbeat characters than it is, but because school serves as a microcosm where students get a glimpse of the world outside.

While “I am Sam” touches on topics such as becoming an adult, it focuses its attention on the love story between student and teacher. Wait! What if a teacher and a minor fell in love? You can do it! You can, provided you do it in a politically-correct manner like this.

The manga “Very Private Lesson”, which is slightly different, was the inspiration for the series. This is because the teacher gets mad when the schoolgirl uses her feminine features to make him crazy. She also feels for him. It sounds interesting, but that’s not something you can do on a Saturday afternoon show like “I am Sam.” The show still scores where it matters.

It is a little shocking to see Yang Donggeun play the role of the shy teacher. He looks so helpless and it was likely that Eun-byul was also interested in Yang Dong-geun’s character.

Yang was previously in roles in “Address Unknown”, “Fighter in the Wind”, and he can show impressive physical performance, especially in the latter. Yang is a bit clumsy in “I am Sam” and sometimes gets beaten up without being able to defend himself.

Even though you may never be able to get to know him, he manages to create a great rapport with Eun-byul and that is what’s important in such a series.

Park Min-yeong portrays Eun-byul, the spoilt and sassy girl. It can sometimes be quite exhausting. Jang and the viewer will both be affected. Park delivers a convincing portrayal of Jang because that is exactly how she is supposed be. Park is also a charming, adorable actress that makes us want to pinch her cheeks.

What is the situation with regard to this rom com? Jang gives the feeling that he doesn’t really care about women, which is often the case. It is almost painful to see his story with So-yi, his female teacher. He has never been able to speak to her, even though he knows from a certain point that she is interested in him.

The teacher’s complicated living arrangements are a factor in this. It is hard for him to invite Soyi over while Eun-byul lives at his house. Things are bound to lead to a love triangle, but Jang doesn’t show the inner struggle of having to choose between Soyi or Eun-byul.

Jang was not allowed to have a relationship with the schoolgirl, which may have been the “morally right” decision by the scriptwriters. So-yi is kept guessing for quite some time, so we have to feel sorry for her. Jang’s inability to tell the truth is a major flaw in drama series.

To be fair, Yang DongGeun is not that different from Park MinYoung in terms of age. It’s not horrible. Although they have their moments, I believe that some relationships can be defined by the lines of sex. (Let’s face it, romance is a large portion sexual attraction.

Otherwise, it wouldn’t just be friendship but romance). My belief is that siblings and their educators are in this category. It’s just plain icky, even though you may call me a prude. This was not about a graduate student falling in love with a professor. This was not about a highschooler and an adult teacher. It’s almost illegal, isn’t? This wouldn’t be fair to call it a bad drama, but I didn’t enjoy it.

You ought to bring the drama into the show. This doesn’t work if Jang isn’t making himself quiet so he can clear up any misunderstandings. Is this really necessary? A little more creativity would have been appreciated. Problem is also that the subject becomes repetitive and the sails lose their wind somewhere in the middle of the series.

Why not reduce the show to twelve episodes? It would have been more enjoyable for the show to go down to 12 episodes. The last episodes are much more engaging and, surprisingly, the ending is satisfying. We don’t expect anything like this from romantic series any more, so we give it a well-deserved thumbs up.

If this was a romance series, I would probably have stopped watching it. The show’s humor and charismatic characters make it very entertaining. Moments such as those where the gangster boss is visiting Jang and Mr. Kim is also present, sadly So-yi is also there. Jang introduces the gangster boss to his father and Mr. Kim to his brother. This situational comedy makes Jang laugh.

There are many illustrious characters that gather in the classroom, so it is a great place to have some laughs. We also become fond of Sa-kang, the loyal friend of Eunbyul. However, Moo-shin is a problem. He is the calm, cool guy who loves to read and wins every fight. All the girls love him, and we wonder why. You can’t help feeling that there are other boys in the same class who are better-looking than Choi Seung Hyeon, aka T.O.P of the hip-hop group Big Bang. Girls aren’t into quiet guys. The cast is great in supporting roles and the side stories are well integrated into the main plot. We also see students’ problems when they clash against the adult world. Even some worldly wisdom has made its way into this series.

“I am Sam” is entertaining and enthralling. The show isn’t as corny as others, but it does bring a refreshing breeze. You still have to deal the Korean pop songs constantly popping in, which can sometimes remind you of annoying jingles. The manga-like characters are a great addition to the drama and romantic scenes. They also have a lot of humor.

If you are wondering who the Sam in the title of the show is, then you will find the answer right away since we view ourselves as an online education site. “Sam” refers to the Korean word for teacher. It is a slang term. This is also why the alternative title was chosen. You can’t go wrong with “I am Sam”, and the show avoids many of the genre problems without ever departing too far from the norm. The series is entertaining and very funny at the end. This is all you can ask for.

Review from a critics point of view

Synopsis/Storyline: My rating 6.5/10

In a high school with low standards, the podium is set. Mostly all of the wrongdoers at the school are represented in the homeroom classroom. However, there are also a few smarter and more middle-of the-road students.

The mild-mannered and weird homeroom teacher, Mr. Jang, seems to really care about all of them. The gangster’s offspring is a quirky charactor who has little interest in homeschooling and no aptitude for it. He meets her and she decides to go to the local high school. The fun begins.

Script/Acting – My rating 5/10

Yang Dong Geun was not as strong as Teacher Jang Yi San (“Sam”), the leader man. His sluggish, stammering personality was not appealing. His uncomplicated, optimistic character is still hilarious. Teacher Jang, commenting on yet another teacher quitting because of incorrigible students, said: “Yes, but they could make weapons means that they are really intelligent.”

Many of the minor characters were too over-played and over-acted. Unfortunately, this was not in a fun or campy way. Teacher Shin (Son Tae Yeong), the second female lead, was too weak, inane and one-dimensional to be attractive. Many of these characters are intended to be funny and goofy but they somehow fall short.

This drama had a cast of great actors and actresses. These few actors and actresses were the stars of the drama, making it worth the effort despite its problems. Park Min Young, City Hunter’s Kim Nana, plays Yoo Eun Byul. It’s easy to see how she rose to stardom. Her performance is charming, funny, and memorable. T.O.P made his acting debut in this drama, and his dark brooding role fit him perfectly. Lee Min Ho was a supporting character but became the scene-stealer when he appeared on-screen as Heo mo Se, the heartthrob son of principal. This is one of those silly but entertaining scenes.

Cinematography – My rating 4.5/10

Although this drama was released in 2007, it feels dated and has a very basic cinematography. Cringe special effects set the mood for low-quality drama. There are some really bizarre scenes in Episode 1.

Even though the gangster father is very small, he lifts and throws a man across the room. In another scene, he fires a shotgun and leaves a hole in his study door. This would not be unusual in and of itself, but Yang Dong Geun reacts like a loud rapport has been established next to his head, yet the gun shot was miraculously quiet. Hm. Hm.

Soon after, there is another silent explosion. Park Min Young, oddly and quite unrealistically, flies across the room. This drama is not known for its sound effects or action. They might even have been better if they were removed altogether.

Music: My rating 5/10

Although the musical score was not very extensive, it was quite cute. The main track “Only Me”, has a beat that is reminiscent of the 50s and works well for high school students who are into shenanigans.

Overall Charisma – My rating 6/10

Although I was able to watch the drama once, I’m glad that I did. It’s actually twice, since I had to watch most of it again on Drama Fever in order to catch up with what I missed. It’s worth seeing some of the top stars in their early careers. Although the plot was a bit slow at times, it was overall enjoyable and I enjoyed the characters.

I am Sam Korean drama ending

My favorite scene was at the end of 16th episode. It’s about 10 to 15 minutes before we get to the actual end of the drama. It was 4 years forward Eun Byul graduated.

First, Ms.Hong is not able to get along with Mr. Kim. After Eun Byul, Mr. Kim seperates from the Mafia and becomes an international lawyer. Ms. Hong is still her boss.

Moses is currently in the army-service, and is married to Da Bin, one of his loyal supporters and the leader and leader of three Bins. They are about to have their second child. One Bin is a famous actress/model, and the third is a poetess who will be going to Oxford. Ji left Jang Ji Sun for Sun Hoo and fell in love with Sun Hoo.

Sun Hoo returned to school-doctor work. Yay! For one dream-couple to find each other. Jang Ji San remains a teacher and has not lost any of his body. Damn! Why is mr. Kim so kind? ? -.-), He is still waiting for Eun Byul’s return.

They live happily ever after and she returns (I’m not a fan). They are my favorite! Min Sa Kang is now an art teacher. She goes back to her school for practice. Moo Shin and his friend are important detectives (They may not have understood, but they could be the founders of it).

The same detective wants Moo Shin and his forces to be recruited. MinXChae couple-fans are pretty much together! It seemed to be so at least This is it! I’m done with the drama. We wish you all the best with this drama!

“Countdown to Lee Min Ho” Drama Review: “I Am Sam”

Less than a week remains to the big event! I’ll be heading to the Legendary Park Plaza Hotel for the 4 hour Lee Min Ho Fan Meeting event Sunday, March 10th.

And now for something rather interesting. Many may have never seen this drama as it is one of Lee Min Ho’s earlier works. Viewers beware: there are some really bad copies out there on the ‘net. Drama Fever has is a good source. I originally watched on a channel that mixed up sections and left out entire portions…

Storyline/Synopsis: My rating 7/10

The stage is set in a high school with standards a bit below average. The focal homeroom classroom is comprised of most of the miscreants of the school as well as a few of the smarter and middle-of-the-road students. Mr. Jang is the mild-mannered, painfully awkward homeroom teacher seems to actually care about them all. Enter the gangster’s daughter, an off-the-wall personality who has no interest in home-schooling and little aptitude for it. She meets Mr. Jang and decides that perhaps attending the local high school might be fun. The amusement begins.

The official trailer:

Script/Acting: My rating 6/10

Yang Dong Geun was a bit weak as the leading man, Teacher Jang Yi San (“Sam”). His lumbering, stammering character lacked the charisma to be truly appealing. Still, his unbelievable optimistic, uncomplicated character makes for really hilarious lines: A teacher, remarking about yet another teaching quitting due to incorrigible students: “If it weren’t for the weapons, that female teacher might not have quit.” Teacher Jang (in a droll voice): “Yes, but the fact that they could make weapons means they’re really intelligent, right?”

Many of the lesser characters were over-played, over-acted – and sadly not really in a fun, campy manner. The second female lead, Teacher Shin (Son Tae Yeong) was also too inane, weak and one-dimensional to be appealing. I think many of these characters are meant to be funny or goofy, but somehow miss the mark.

The saving grace for this drama was a cast that sported some really great actors and actresses. The talents of these few carried the show and made the drama worth watching despite the issues. Park Min Young (City Hunter’s Kim Nana) performs in her first real lead as Yoo Eun Byul. It is easy to see why she became a rising star thereafter. Her performance is sweet, funny and memorable. T.O.P also made his acting debut in this drama and his dark brooding character fit him well. Lee Min Ho, while not a leading character, became a scene-stealer whenever on-screen as Heo Mo Se, the heart-throb son of the principal. The following clip is one of the silly, but fun scenes:

Cinematography: My rating 3/10

This drama is from 2007, but even forgiving its age the feel is rather low budget and simplistic cinematographically. Really bad special effects open the drama and set the tone for a lower-than-standard quality. Episode 1 features a few really strange scenes. Although the gangster dad is small in stature he unrealistically lifts and tosses a man across the room in one scene and in another, fires a shotgun putting a smoking hole in his study door. That in itself wouldn’t be odd, except Yang Dong Geun reacts as if a loud rapport has gone off next to his head yet the gun shot was miraculously silent. Hm. (Yeah – I replayed it a few times to be sure I didn’t miss something!) Shortly thereafter there’s another silent explosion and Park Min Young oddly and very unrealistic flys across a room. Sound effects and action are not the forte of this drama. In fact, leaving them out altogether might have been a real improvement.

Music: My rating 5/10

The musical scoring was limited but somewhat cute. The main track, “Only Me” has kind of a 50’s-ish beat that works well with high schoolers getting into shenanigans.

“Only Me” Paran http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qw2mfC1w2Fc

“I Do” Genie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qs9FXpUyn_8

”Love You” Byul aka Star http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWI24X64ASI

Overall Charisma: My rating 6/10

I am glad I had the opportunity to see this drama, although one viewing will probably be enough. (OK, it’s actually twice since I had to re-watch most of it on Drama Fever to see what I missed the first time around!) It’s worthwhile to see some of these top stars early in their careers. While the plot line limped along at times, in general, the story was worth following and several characters captured my attention.

Happy Drama Watching!

Review Phim “I Am Sam”: Lát Cắt Cuộc Đời Của Những Người Khiếm Khuyết Về Trí Tuệ

Trên nền nhạc của The Beatles với những câu hát vang lên khớp từng khung cảnh như “Nothin’s gonna change my world”, “I’m looking through you, and you’re not the same”… I am Sam càng làm người ta cảm động vô cùng.

I Am Sam (TV series)

2007 South Korean television series

I am Sam (Korean: 아이엠샘; RR: A-i Em Saem) is a 2007 South Korean television series starring Yang Dong-geun, Park Min-young, Park Jun-gyu, Son Tae-young, and T.O.P in his acting debut. It aired on KBS2 from August 6 to October 2, 2007, on Mondays and Tuesdays at 21:55 (KST) time slot for 16 episodes. Based on the Japanese comic series Kyōkasho ni Nai! (in English, Not in a Textbook! or Very Private Lesson), Yang plays a geeky, straight-arrowed, under-qualified high school teacher who becomes a live-in tutor for the troublemaking daughter of a notorious gangster, in exchange for one million won.[1]

The title is a word play since sam in Korean roughly translates to “teacher” in slang, thus the international title, I am Your Teacher.

Synopsis [ edit ]

Yoo Jae-gon (Park Jun-gyu), head of an infamous gangster organization, becomes troubled by the future prospects of his only daughter, Eun-byul (Park Min-young), who refuses to study. Then coincidence or fate brings together Eun-byul and goofy-looking high school teacher Jang Yi-san (Yang Dong-geun) in a somewhat sticky situation. After finding out that Yi-san can actually inspire his troublesome daughter to focus on her studies, Jae-gon offers a deal to Yi-san: become his daughter’s private tutor in exchange for one million won. The catch is Yi-san has to move in with her. And the money? It’s given as security for his own life.
