BISD responds to disturbing video of child abuse at elementary school
A woman walked into a crowded cafeteria at Homer Drive Elementary School, grabbed her young son by his shirt collar and violently dragged him outside as students and staff looked on.
The incident was captured on a video that was posted socially Wednesday night, prompting investigations by the Beaumont ISD Police Department and the local office of Child Protective Services.
The mother, whose name was not released by authorities, is wearing a visitor’s badge in the video. She initially is shown telling a young woman, believed to be the child’s teacher, what she intends to do to the boy.
“I’m about to beat his (expletive),” she says before marching off.
The teacher doesn’t move or say anything. Inside the noisy cafeteria, no employees can be seen making any effort to intervene. A custodian continued to wipe down a table. After the woman bangs the door back open, she curses at the child and lashes him with a belt while dragging him back to the teacher.
Finally, she demands that the wailing little boy apologize for some previous misbehavior or disrespect.
“Everybody is going to be talking about you now,” she says, finally.
It is unclear who shot the video, only that it was someone with the mother.
Also unknown late Thursday was the status of the teacher or anyone else seen in the video.
“We are in the process of evaluating this incident to determine the next steps in consequences for the behaviors exhibited,” BISD spokeswoman Hannah LeTulle said in an emailed statement. “We cannot provide personnel information due to the fact that this is an ongoing investigation.”
The district also referred the matter to CPS and BISD police.
The Enterprise confirmed that Child Protective Services workers visited the home of the woman in the video on Thursday, and that four children, ages 2 to 12, live there.
BISD Police Chief Joseph Malbrough did not return a call seeking comment.
The video was posted on social media, where it racked up thousands of views before being taken down. Some parents and community members responded with comments asking why the parent was allowed into the cafeteria in the first place.
LeTulle said parents regularly come onto campus after being alerted to discipline problems.
“It is not uncommon for parents to address the disciplinary issues that concern their children on campus,” she said. “However, the behavior exhibited by this parent was an isolated and rare occurrence. Beaumont ISD does not condone extreme approaches such as the one that occurred at Homer Drive Elementary.”
The district also pointed to the parental code of conduct, which, among other things, prohibits “abusive, threatening, profane or harassing communication.”

Investigators with the state Child Protective Services agency today removed four children, ages 2 to 12, from the home of a mother who is the subject of a video published Wednesday on social media that shows her verbally and physically abusing one of the children at Homer Drive Elementary School.
Shari Pulliam, spokeswoman for CPS, confirmed the successful removal for the safety of the four children, two of whom were at school and two of whom were in the home.
A fifth child, who resided in Houston, was also taken into custody by CPS.
The five children are ages 1, 2, 3, 7 and 12.

I want to interject here and say that the entire staff who watched this child be snatched up like this and dragged out by his collar should also be fired as well!
Any potential legal action taken against the mother is a law enforcement decision, she added.
An associate judge signed the order Friday allowing the removal of the four children, said Randi A. King, chief prosecutor in the family law division of the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.
Child Protective Services investigated the video, identified the woman in question and went to her Beaumont home Thursday, executing the removal order for the children, which was completed midday today.
In the video, which was available on Twitter and Facebook throughout Wednesday afternoon, a woman, accompanied by another person who was recording the incident, entered the Homer Drive Elementary cafeteria, located the child and dragged him outside by his shirt collar.
Once in the courtyard, the woman screamed obscenities at the child, forcing him to make an apology to another adult, at which point the woman began striking the child several times with what appears to be a belt, threatening to “break your (expletive) face” and calling him a racially derogatory epithet.
No one interceded during the incident, either inside the cafeteria or in the assault outside.
King said once the removal is completed and the children are safely in foster care, a hearing in one of the two family law courts will take place either Nov. 19 or Nov. 21 for further disposition.
