Gil Cohen (artist)

American artist

For other people named Gil Cohen, see Gil Cohen

Gil Cohen (born July 28, 1931 in Philadelphia) is an American artist, noted for his illustrations of aircraft and people in military service, who also illustrated men’s magazines, books and movie posters.

Biography [ edit ]

Gilbert B. Cohen was born to Philip and Hannah (née Borofsky) Cohen on July 28, 1931 and raised in Philadelphia where his Russian-immigrant grandparents and father operated a hardware store. He trained as an illustrator at the Philadelphia Museum School of Art, where he studied under artists Karl Sherman, Henry C. Pitz, Albert Gold, Joe Krush and S. Gertrude Schell, and then graduated in 1953. Soon thereafter, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and assigned to a military intelligence unit in Germany where he rendered images of Soviet weaponry, based on verbal espionage reports. Upon his release from the Army, he resumed his chosen career in commercial art and illustration.[1]

As of 2017, Cohen maintained a studio at his home in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.[2]

Career [ edit ]

Cohen’s artistic career spanned more than six decades of producing images for men’s magazines, movie posters, books, government agencies, and later producing carefully researched fine-art oil paintings of aviation and war-related subjects.[3] He also assumed both teaching and administrative duties in his field of illustration. He is an Artist Fellow of the American Society of Aviation Artists.[4]

Aviation art [ edit ]

Cohen’s interest in aviation began as a youth during the Second World War, when he became proficient in identifying a wide variety of aircraft of the time. This interest was renewed, when he became interested in producing World War II aviation art, which included a series of paintings depicting the activities of the Eighth Air Force—examples of which were exhibited in a one-man show at the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force in Pooler, Georgia for six months, starting December 1988.[2]

In 1997, he began publishing limited-edition prints of his aviation art,[1] which were distributed through art-print vendors in the U.S. and Great Britain.[2][5]

A retrospective of Cohen’s aviation art was published in 2009.[1] A reviewer of Cohen’s body of work noted that it both presented faithful depictions of aircraft and, more significantly, focused on the people involved and the emotional energy that they brought to their activities.[3]

He traveled under the auspices of the U.S. Air Force to theaters of conflict in Bosnia, Somalia, and Central Asia and also to Israel to create paintings that he donated to the U.S. Air Force Art Program.[2]

During the 1950s and 60s, Cohen worked as a free-lance illustrator for men’s adventure magazines—a common genre of the time. One such publisher was Magazine Management Company—with magazines that included Male, Stag, and For Men Only—whose assignments required complex illustrations, executed on a short deadline, often involving duotone technique (using black plus one other color on the printed page).[6]

A 1961 assignment for Argosy magazine to illustrate a serialized version of Ian Fleming’s James Bond novel, Thunderball, led to later assignments from another publisher to illustrate book covers for the Mack Bolan series of The Executioner novels by Don Pendleton.[1]

His illustration work expanded to more mainstream clientele that included the U.S. Information Agency, the National Park Service, Paramount Pictures, Bantam Books, Harlequin Books, Random House, Holt Rinehart & Winston, Warner-Lambert, the U.S. Coast Guard, the National Guard Bureau, and the Boeing and Sikorsky Aircraft companies.[1]

Teaching [ edit ]

In 1966, Cohen received an invitation to teach at his alma mater;[note 1] this led to a part-time position as an instructor and to increasing academic responsibilities. He taught figure drawing, anatomy and illustration over the course of 21 years.[1]

Other activities [ edit ]

Cohen has assumed administrative duties in the art world, as well. As part of the board of directors for the New York–based Society of Illustrators, he chaired its U.S. Air Force Art Program—providing travel opportunities for artists to depict the mission of the U.S. Air Force at bases around the world.[2] In his work with the American Society of Aviation Artists (ASAA), he served variously as vice-president and exhibition committee chair; he received the ASAA Service Award for his work with the society.[4]

Aviation Art of Gil Cohen

Gil Cohen biography

Gil Cohen has had a long career as an artist, illustrator, teacher and historical painter.

Cohen, having studied under renowned illustrator and author, Henry C. Pitz and World War II combat artist, Albert Gold, graduated the Philadelphia Museun School of Art ( now the University of the Arts ) in 1953. Years later, Gil returned there to teach figure drawing, anatomy and illustration from 1966 to 1986, eventually chairing the Continuing Studies Illustration Program.

Prior to beginning his art career, Gil spent two years in the army. During that time, he was stationed outside of Frankfurt, West Germany as an artist with the 513th Military Intelligence Group, US Army Europe, during the height of the Cold War.

Cohen’s primary career has been that of a freelance illustrator and painter of historical subjects. Clients during this 50 year plus span of time have included: The U.S. Information Agency, The National Park Service, Paramount Pictures, Bantam books, Harlequin Books, Random House, Holt Rinehart & Winston, Warner-Lambert, The U.S. Coast Guard, The National Guard Bureau, and Boeing & Sikorsky Aircraft Companies.

Gil Cohen’s passionate interest in aviation started as a youngster during the Second World War. Gil became quite proficient at identifying the many types of aircraft that flew over the Philadelphia area where he was born and raised. Many years later he was able to blend three of his deep interests ( painting, history and aviation ) and would go on to produce his stunning series of paintings depicting scenes of Eighth Air Force activities during World War II. Gil’s emphasis in this series was not only to depict a specific moment in history, as well as actual aircraft, but most importantly, the human element; i.e., human task at hand, emotions being experienced and energy released.

The original oil paintings of the series based upon the Eighth U.S. Army Air Force during World War II are in private collections around the world. Limited Edition reproductions of this series are marketed worldwide; some of which are sold out and are only available on the secondary market.

A one-man show of Gil Cohen’s Aviation paintings, including the well known Eighth Air Force series, was exhibited at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Heritage Museum in Savannah, Georgia from December, 1988 through May, 1999.

Cohen, Artist Fellow, former Vice-President and former Exhibition Committee Chair of the American Society of Aviation Artists ( ASAA ), is currently filling the Ren Wicks Founder’s Chair of ASAA. Cohen is a four time winner of “The Award of Distinction” of ASAA juried exhibitions as well as the ASAA Service Award in 2007. He is also the recipient of the British Guild of Aviation Artists “Best of Show” by an American artist and the “Best of the Best” award sponsored by Aviation Week & Space Technology Magazine. Cohen has conducted artist’s workshops on the topic, “The Human Figure in Pictorial Composition” for ASAA.

Gil Cohen’s paintings have been exhibited at the New York Society of Illustrators, The National Parks Civil War battlefield sites of Appomattox Court House, Gettysburg, Mannasas, Chickamauga, and Petersburg, The Kosciuszko Museum and The Art Alliance in Philadelphia, The Kennedy Center in Washington,D.C., The Colorado Springs Fine Art Center, The Royal Air Force Museum in London, The U.S. Air Force Museum in Dayton, as well as the Mighty Eighth Air Force Heritage Museum.

For several years Cohen served on the Board of Directors of the New York based Society of Illustrators chairing the Government Services Program which oversaw the Air Force Art Program. In that role he had sent many artists around the world to depict the mission of the U.S. Air Force. His own travels with the Air Force have taken him to such places as war-torn Bosnia, Somalia, Central Asia and Israel. Paintings generated from these trips are donated to the U.S. Air Force Art Program. A painting by Cohen, depicting the airlift of military supplies to Israel from the United States during the Yom Kippur War of 1973, was presented at the Dover Air Force Base Museum during ceremonies in October 1998, commemorating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Yom Kippur War.

In July 2005, a reception of Cohen’s aviation prints was held at the Duxford Flying Legends Air Show in England. Guests signing Cohen’s prints included 22 WW II veterans of the Royal Air Force. Another Duxford reception was held the following year featuring RAF Pathfinder veterans and former members of the famous Eagle Squadron.

In 2007 Cohen was honored with the prestigous Lifetime Achievement Award in Art from the Central Bucks County Chamber of Commerce.

Gil Cohen’s studio is located in the home he shares with his wife, Alice, in historic Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

Aviation art by Gil Cohen

Best known today as one of the leading aviation artists, Gil Cohen is a highly schooled fine arts illustrator, Gil Cohen studied under Henry C. Pitz at the Philadelphia College of Art. In 1955, Cohen served as artist with the SHAEF Headquarters, Military Intelligence U.S. Army in West Germany. His subsequent career as a freelance artist included service to a multitude of clients including the U.S. Information Agency, the National Park Service, Paramount Pictures, Bantam Books, Harlequin Books, Random House, Holt Reinhart Winston, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Coast Guard, Warner-Lambert and Boeing-Sikorsky.

Truly a “gold medal artist” Gil Cohen’s exhibitions and awards are numerous. They include the National Military Park system, the Kennedy Center and the Pentagon. He has been awarded gold medals and best of shows by the American Society of Aviation Artists and has received the

Aviation Artists, he has held the position of Vice President and Chairman of the Exhibition Committee.

He also has a great interest in history and aviation which is reflected in much of his work. His vivid interest in the human aspects of the various wars throughout the centuries zeros in on the interactions between men, which eventually have lead to confrontations and successive warring

between peoples and nations. He is continually mystified by the recurring observations that some of the most beautiful mechanisms of engineering, designed by humans, are often created by man for the purpose of war.

Gil Cohen

Gil is rightfully recognised by collectors as one of the finest aviation and military artists ever to have graced the genre. Growing up during the Second World War near the airbases of Philadelphia, USA, it was undoubtedly his early years spent listening out for the roars from the various aircraft of the Mighty Eighth Air Force that sparked his passion for the subject. As a young adult, Gil also spent time in the US Army as an artist, posted just outside Frankfurt with the 513th Military Intelligence Group, US Army Europe, during the height of the Cold War. These formative years allowed his interest in the military, history and art to blossom and served as a springboard for his career as an aviation artist.

Gil’s awe-inspiring portfolio has earned him a place among the elite artists in the field, and his paintings reflect his meticulous attention to detail. But it is his focus on the human element of combat that makes his artwork stand out. The Cohen classic ‘Night of Nights’ focuses not on the formation of C-47s entering Normandy on the night of D-Day, but rather on the view from inside the aircraft as the men of the 101st Airborne prepare to jump. ‘We Guide to Strike’ portrays a dangerous RAF bombing raid over Germany from the perspective of the wireless operator looking into the cockpit. Gil’s work never fails to reflect the raw human emotion involved in war, without compromising on historical accuracy – his paintings portray real history and real experiences.

When you look at a Gil Cohen painting – you feel as if you are seeing History. He is one of the finest figure artist in the World – and one of my favorite artists. His paintings take us back to the struggles of the Pilots who fought for their country’s survival. You can see the stress in their faces, feel the tension as they wait to take to the skies. The more you look at a Gil Cohen painting the more you love it.
