Great Mothers-In-Law in Dramas
An evil mother-in-law is a staple cliché in Asian dramas. From the crazy and cartoonish “I will literally kill you if you touch my baby” to the more common “take this money and leave”, Asian dramas are plagued with rich madams that hate the female leads. These would-be MILs are usually bent upon setting their golden boys up with equally golden girls. It does not help that our female leads are usually poor as dirt and do not bring any economic gain to the relationship, which is usually the number one requirement for a would-be daughter-in-law in the eyes of dramaland’s MILs. But this article is not about evil MILs but their counterparts, great, unexpectedly awesome mothers-in-laws.
Without further ado, here are some great mothers of male leads in Asian dramas.
Na Hye Sung from My ID is Gangnam Beauty
In this drama our mother of the male lead is a beautiful modern woman who would do anything for her children. She went through a very traumatic marriage and lost her children after the divorce, one of the reasons why she is absent from their lives for 10 years. She comes back into their lives and tries very hard to regain her children’s love and trust which includes caring a lot for her son’s love life. She is very accepting of the female lead – it helps that they were already very close and that the FL helped her reconnect with her son.
To be honest I developed a little woman-crush on CEO Na. Overall she’s a fabulous person and friend.
Cha Mae Hwa from Clean With Passion For Now
Cha Mae Hwa is a prime example of a mother who only wants the best for her child but does not interfere in his life and respects his decisions, even when it pains her to see him suffer. Although she’s very suspicious of the FL at first, and they do have their small misunderstandings, she’s open enough that she gets to know the FL and they bond over their mutual love and concern over the ML’s well-being.
Queen Bang Young Sun from King2Hearts
The Queen Mother is a very regal woman with clear ideas of what she wants for her son and the country. She is, however, very caring and warm deep down. Although she dislikes the female lead at first for being a North Korean soldier, she soon warms up to her and even goes so far as to harshly chastise her son, the king, when he is not the best of husbands.
The FL and her mother-in-law go through a lot together, including a violent kidnapping, but they come through it stronger than ever. It is very refreshing to see such different women bond, especially because they are very similar in their strong outer persona while being so warm-hearted and mushy on the inside.
Irie Noriko from Itazura na Kiss – Love in Tokyo
No article about great mothers-in-law is complete without the extremely-lovable-but-extra-nosy Mrs. Irie. She’s the ultimate MIL dream come true. She loves the FL as her own child and was the first, and only for a long while, person to believe that the FL was perfect for her son. And yes, she was very intrusive into their relationship at times – the woman went so far as to plan a whole wedding in two days – but she was also extremely kind-hearted and well intentioned.

The stock conflict between women and their mothers-in-law also reached new heights of intensity on TV.◆ Coming to blowsThe SBS series ” My Man’s Woman ” offered a slightly new angle on the age-old adultery problem. In an early episode, Junpyo, the male lead who is having an affair with his wife’s friend Hwa-young, is caught kissing her by his sister-in-law, Eun-su. Viewers were stunned when Eun-su kicked Hwa-young and hit her in the face.The characters in the SBS drama ” First Wives’ Club ” also came to blows. In the drama, Han Won-soo who has an affair, beats his wife Nah Hwa-shin, and Han Bok-soo, who is angry with her husband’s affair hits him over the head with a washboard.”In the past, Korean drama showed fantasies about adultery, like something out of a fairy tale”, cultural critic Kim Jong-whee says. “But now dramas show the reality that is created by adultery”. Kim Su-hyun , the writer of ” My Man’s Woman “, earlier told the Chosun Ilbo, “I write my script based on in-depth inquiries of adultery itself, rather than dealing with it as an episode”.◆ Nasty mothers-in-lawConflicts between women and their mothers-in-law reached new pitch. One mother-in-law in MBC series “Winter Bird” accused her daughter-in-law of being “spoiled goods in a pretty package”. In KBS’ ” Golden Era of Daughter in Law “, a woman is seen to cause the death of her daughter-in-law when she visits her in hospital and harangues her about splitting up with her son. Some viewers felt this was going too far.◆ RegressingSome experts say these storylines are a step back in time. Park Woong-jin of the Korea Broadcasting Institute said, “It remains a question whether viewers can feel catharsis from such fights”. In the case of Eun-soo, viewers were impressed already by her feisty character; the fisticuffs were surplus to requirements. “The fight was a hackneyed old device to attract viewers”, Park says, but admits that the ubiquity of such scenes suggests viewers prefer action to storyline.

Vera’s great and one of my favorite bloggers on KDA. She came up with a great topic: The “worst” and “best” kdrama households. So I really sat down and contemplated what I considered a bad household to be. I thought of course of the stereotypical daughter-in-law with evil mother-in-law. But then you have the mothers son who considers it a great household to live in. So I narrowed my search down to a really toxic environment. Where no one is happy, not the sons, daughters, husband, wives, ect… Somewhere that you’d rather be a homeless beggar than living in such a household. So naturally we are talking Korean dramas where it’s a breeding ground for some evil beings to grow and breed.

Kang Hee Soo, Gu Jun Pyo’s mother is probably the meanest mother-in-law you can ask for. She does anything to keep up the prestigious name of Shinhwa Group, where she acts as President. She lies, cheats, and does anything in her power to keep everyone in line. Even if it’s not to the best of their interests. Would you want to live in her household? Well if you are still undecided let me give you some details: she lied to her son about his fathers death just so he would do her bidding, sabotaged her sons girlfriend and her family, and tricked her son when he had amnesia. This are all things she did to her OWN SON! Would you want to marry into this family…ehh better rethink those invitations.

You’re born as a twin and because of an evil curse both your parents stop at nothing to kill you so your brother can be the next King. Wow some powerful stuff huh? Well I’m not done yet, your also fighting against an invisible clock because of the curse. Oh and did I forget to mention an evil Shamaness who also wants you dead. The Palace is full of people who just want to murder you. How’s a girl supposed to get her beauty sleep? I mean she’s got a hot guy to catch after all!

But of course the poor innocent first bride who has to deal with a cray cray mother in law to boot also has to die. Come in drama people. Just come on!

Okay the whole family is just plain cray cray. And I mean everyone. Mom deserves to be in the loony bin, the son locked up in prison with a second cot set up for his sister. The things they do that they think are acceptable just make your skin crawl. Mommy Dearest locks our female lead in the loony bin after three years marriage to her son because she just can’t take her anymore. The sons okay with it and the sister is off trying to snare another poor soul into the family. Long story short after some hair raising events by the lovely Kim Family, mommy dearest decides that our female lead is actually a great choice for her son and tries to get them back together again. I didn’t know what crazy was until this drama.

On the outside your typical great Chaebol family. Powerful CEO of a family, beautiful accomplished daughter and great successor in chaebol son. The perfect family just missing a mother figure. Oh boy you couldn’t be more wrong. This family is hiding the most skeletons out of everyone. When your own EVIL father is completely terrified of you there’s got to be something wrong right??? I’m actually not going to give anymore away of this drama because it’s a masterpiece that delves into the psychology of a truly evil second male lead and even goes into great length that marrying for money isn’t always the best solution. Especially when you decide to marry a sophisticated psycho.
