Samuel L. Jackson and Barack Obama have it. Then there’s Snoop Dogg with that voice.
All are featured in Ebony magazine’s August issue, on stands now, featuring “The 25 Coolest Brothers of All Time.”
The issue, which pays homage to the confidence, style, tenacity and accomplishments of famous black men, was published with eight different covers — each with a different face. Prince, Denzel Washington, Muhammad Ali, Billy Dee Williams, Jay-Z, Samuel L. Jackson, Barack Obama and Marvin Gaye are the cover subjects.
The cover photos represent “eight men who personified the various types of cool,” Ebony photo director Dudley M. Brooks said.
Others on the list include Sammy Davis Jr., Don Cheadle, Ed Bradley and Lenny Kravitz.
“Cool is not about what we do, but it is who we are and how we carry ourselves,” said Brooks, who also wrote the tribute to the late photographer Gordon Parks. “It’s a certain swagger that’s learned from generation to generation. Black men are emulated around the world for their walk, their language and their style. It’s a special quality.”
Brooks, who has three sons, said he wanted to present a more positive image of black men than what is typically shown in the media.
“Being a black male is a special thing. Throughout time, black men have personified cool, whether we realize it or not. It’s important to expose our sons to these men and their stories.”
The magazine’s staff selected the 25 from a list of 150 names, and finding consensus wasn’t easy, Brooks said.
Female staffers tended to define cool as “sexy,” as with Denzel Washington and Lenny Kravitz; men viewed it in terms of those they would like to emulate, such as Michael Jordan.
“We know there are other cool men out there. We want to open the debate with readers because everyone has an opinion,” Brooks said.

Walt “Clyde” Frazier was, still is, the epitome of cool. He made playing defense and passing the basketball as impressive as scoring. Then after the game, he styled in fur coats and a Rolls (If I have to explain that’s a Rolls Royce automobile, you are not cool). The nickname “Clyde” derives from the gangster Clyde Barrow as in Bonnie and Clyde, bank robbing thieves in the 1930s.

You’re cool if you’ve got a nickname. Or known by one name like Prince, Snoop or Tupac. You’re cool if you made an album entitled The Rebirth of Cool, like Miles Davis, who defined cool jazz.
You’re cool if you’ve accomplished something like Sidney Poitier and Denzel Washington. You can’t be cool if you defied the man but ultimately got pimped slapped by the man like Adam Clayton Powell Jr.
Ebony magazine’s August issue which comes out Tuesday features the 25 Coolest Brothers of all time and it lists by decade some of the most suave black men to ever grace the planet. You can vote for the coolest of each decade, starting with the 1960s.
Richard Pryor was crazy cool But I don’t know if that makes him cool. But it was cool to listen to Richard Pryor and if you listened to him you definitely were cool.
So who do you think are the 25 coolest brothers? Who’s missing from the Ebony list? Why isn’t Arthur Ashe on the list? How about Doctor J Julius Erving?
