David Pawson says that Zechariah overlapped Haggai by one month, and had some similar prophecies but it is not an easy book to understand. It has apocalyptic prophecies. David explains that describing something in the distant future requires pictures and symbols such as Revelation, Ezekiel and Daniel have. How would you describe television to somebody who lived a thousand years ago? Whereas Haggai dealt with the current problems, much of Zechariah’s messages were looking far forward. Zechariah was a priest as well as a prophet and for the next 400 years there would be no direct word from God via prophets so priests would assume more importance. The book divides into 2 halves, the first 8 chapters concerned with the current situation in Israel. He reminds them that ignoring the prophets had caused their forefathers to be deported to Babylon. There were angels involved in messages to Zechariah. He was told that there was a window of world peace, so it was an ideal time for the Jews to get the temple built. Zechariah assures his people that the Lord will deal with the nations who harm them, but also, some Gentiles will join them. David explains symbols in the book. This is an encouraging study.

Thoughtful Thoughts by John Dunning, 3.4.20 Zechariah Part 2
Some prophecies were not understood quite as much by the hearers as they are to us today. We would be the same, if we had lived then. When they were fulfilled however, they did prove who the Messiah was, and that God had arranged it all well in advance.
1). Zechariah tells us that God is sending someone to the rescue.
Early on in the book of Zechariah, there is this prophecy…
“I am going to bring my servant, the Branch”; Zechariah 3:8 and, in Zechariah 6:12, he adds, “Tell him this is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the Lord’ ”.
So, we see that the “Branch” is; a). Brought by God, b). He is a man, and c). He will build the temple of the LORD.
Well, the temple was destroyed in AD70, so what is this temple?
St Paul explains that those in God’s family are now the temple of the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit now dwells within us instead of a building made with hands. We are required to reject sin completely as the Holy Spirit lives in God’s people now. (We are also told elsewhere that He can depart from us if we grieve Him. If that happens, we endanger our souls as Jesus said blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the unforgivable sin; (Matthew 12:31-32), which also means that the Holy Spirit is a Divine Person, if it is possible to blaspheme Him. (King David was well aware of the spiritual danger of losing the presence of the Holy Spirit, (because of his adultery,) and says so in Psalm 51:11;- but he repented. (Whereas Judas did not.)
So from all this we now can see that the prophecy in Zechariah 6:12 regarding the “Branch” as being brought by God, was the One sent to build His temple. This was fulfilled in Jesus as He was prophecied as being the ‘sent one’, elsewhere, so this is yet another one of the many jig saw pieces about the One God brought by God.
2). Zechariah tells us how to recognise this special person God is sending.
Zechariah not only prophecies that God is sending His “Branch” to build a temple of the Lord, but provides some details for us, so that we will recognise Him when He comes.
A). Zechariah 9:9-10 tells us that He will ride into Jerusalem on a donkey.
9. “Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10. I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth. 11. As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit.”
From that prophecy we learn that:-
i). He will be the one coming into Jerusalem on a donkey…
As the New Testament was also written by Jews they knew their Bible, and so Matthew quoted this verse from Zechariah in Matthew 21:4-5 when recording Jesus arrival in Jerusalem, prior to His Crucifixion. So he makes the connection that Zechariah’s prophecy was about Jesus.
ii). We also see that the first coming of the Messiah is to be in peace, and not to judge, which is why He rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. (Elsewhere, we are told that next time He will come as King to judge and reign, and that it will be a very different kind of coming, but that’s a different point.)
