How to change the oil on a BMW M30 inline 6 cylinder. This particular vehicle I am working with here today is a 1984 BMW 733i e23 body style equipped with a 3.2L inline 6. The M30 can also be found on the E24, E28, E32, and E34 vehicles. Oil weights will vary depending on where you’re located, the owner’s manual does have a good chart for helping pick the correct oil weight. Total oil required for this engine is 6.1 US quartz, 5.75 litres, or 10.1 pints.

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-19mm 3/8” drive socket
-3/8” ratchet
-3/8” drive sockets
-clean rag
-oil drain pan
-oil
-oil filter
-filter housing o-ring
-drain plug crush washer
Procedure:
-start by elevating the front of the vehicle, for this I am using drive on ramp
-locate the oil drain which is located on the bottom of the oil pan of the engine, this uses a 19mm socket with a 3/8” ratchet
-place the drain pan directly below the oil plug
-loosen the plug, remove, and then allow the oil to drain
-remove the oil filter cartridge which is located towards the front of the engine on the side of the block
-using a 3/8” drive ratchet, loosen the main bolt on the housing, this holds on the filter cartridge case
-ensure the oil drain pan is directly underneath, you may need to break this free a little to get the housing to drop down, there will be oil inside
-let it drain a little if possible, otherwise it can get messy when removing it
-remove the main bolt, then remove the cartridge housing
-you can dump some more out of the cartridge with the drain pan directly underneath and have a rag handy to prevent any drips
-dump the remaining oil into the drain pan, just to give you a peak at the cartridge housing and old filter
-clean the housing to remove any old oil or residue so we have a fresh start with new oil
-you can use a little degreaser and a clean rag
-remove the old gasket, a new one should be supplied with the new filter
-clean it’s mounting surface so it’s ready for a new gasket
-install new crush washers which should be supplied with the new oil filter on the mount housing bolt and the oil pan drain plug
-I like to prime the housing, so on start up the engine isn’t starving of oil, a couple inches of oil in the bottom is all that’s needed
-pair up the oil and new filters to ensure they are the same, then install the new filter
-it’s a good idea to wipe clean the mounting surface where the cartridge housing meets
-put the cartridge housing in place, then reinstall the bolt and tighten accordingly
-make sure the sealing face is clean where the drain plug sits and then reinstall
-for filling you may or may not need a funnel, I did as it was a windy day and my strut brace does prevent me from getting close to the fill location on the valve cover
-oil weights will vary depending on where you’re located, the owner’s manual does have a good chart for helping pick the correct oil weight
-total oil required for this engine is 6.1 US quartz, 5.75 litres, or 10.1 pints
-to check the oil, the dipstick is located at the opposite side of the engine with a yellow handle
-remove the dipstick, wipe clean, then insert and pull out again to check the level
-I normally check this a couple times for an accurate reading, it should be between the minimum and maximum marks
-start the engine, check for leaks, remove the vehicle off the ramps, then turn the engine off and check again

I look at the stock, nothing, nada. No big deal, I’ll go to another parts store. Next stop is Autozone, they don’t carry Purolator, they sell Fram, Mobile One, Bosch, K&N, and Autolite. Only FRAM has an oil filter listed for the M30 with none in stock. Off to my last chance which is O’Reilly auto parts and the same conclusion was reached there as well. Now here’s the interesting thing about my inability to find an oil filter for the M30. While looking at the various cross reference books in these three chain auto parts stores something became apparent, NO ONE, except Fram and Purolator has an oil filter for the M30 engine in their listings.
So this week I’ll be ordering a six pack of filters from whomever has the best price on Mahle filters.

None of those are what I’d call real auto parts stores, which is your problem. Most NAPAs are real auto parts stores as are most independents (which they are anyway, NAPA is just a buyers group), though many of them have gone away. I don’t expect to buy anything besides off the shelf chemicals at the chains. I expect people in a certain business to have some knowledge of said business, even if they aren’t an expert at it. Those working at chains are often ignorant of such basics as hose compatability, fuel, water and A/C. I’d be disapointed if I were you, but not surprised.
