Irene Nuss Begonia is an upright tall growing begonia and one of the most beautiful cane like species. This cultivar has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. This award is given to plants that have outstanding performance in the garden by the British Royal Horticulture Society. This is a classic cane. (Irene Nuss, CA. 1971). It blooms with pendulous, chandelier like pink flowers on pink stems. It flowers from spring through to winter outdoors, and in summer indoors. Partial shade/filtered dappled light to direct morning sun is ideal. Keep on the drier side in winter.
‘Irene Nuss’ has many dark pink, fragrant, pendulous flowers and lobed, ovate, wavy, slightly iridescent leaves. New leaves have magenta/copper colouration on the undersides and look amazing from the back too. Other leaves have this colouration seasonally. The leaves are incredibly sculptural and origami-like. The stem is cane-like with evenly spaced nodes.
This plant enjoys filtered light but can take some sun in Spring, Autumn and winter. Morning sun is best until 11 am. No mid summer intense Western sun. Soil/potting medium should ideally be moist and well draining.
I have a large 3.5 meter high 2.5 meter wide Irene Nuss in my garden and a number of different sized Irene Nuss plants in pots from tiny plants to 2 meters tall. I fertilise every 6 weeks from Spring to Autumn with liquified vermicast.
This film and photographs are taken in my front garden, on a 416 sq meter block in Sydney. Much of my garden receives dappled light as there are 7 huge ancient, gnarled Angophora Costata which are indigenous, local native trees, overhead. These trees are remnant bushland with their towering canopies 40 meters over the rest of the garden. The garden is on and around a sandstone cliff.

I have Irene Nuss growing outdoor year-round in partial shade with a.m. sun. She’s doing quite well and throwing out spray after spray of flowers. Quite by mistake, I found out that the blossoms, which I always thought were scent-less, smelled faintly of gardenia or honeysuckle. I highly recommend her for her ease and vigor in growing.
