The Russian lyrics in this song are from a poem written by Boris Pasternak, who also wrote. While translations differ slightly, the most common is as follows:February. Get ink, shed tears.Write of it, sob your heart out, sing,While torrential slush that roarsBurns in the blackness of the spring. >>
Regina Spektor – Après Moi Lyrics
I must go on standing
You can’t break that which isn’t yours
I must go on standing
I’m not my own, it’s not my choice
Be afraid of the lame, they’ll inherit your legs
Be afraid of the old, they’ll inherit your souls
Be afraid of the cold, they’ll inherit your blood
Après moi, le deluge
After me comes the flood
I must go on standing
You can’t break that which isn’t, isn’t yours, yours
I must go on standing
I’m not my own, it’s not my choice
Be afraid of the lame, they’ll inherit your legs
Be afraid of the old, they’ll inherit your souls
Be afraid of the cold, they’ll inherit your blood
Après moi, le deluge
After me comes the flood
Be afraid of the lame, they’ll inherit your legs
Be afraid of the old, they’ll inherit your souls
Be afraid of the cold, they’ll inherit your blood
Après moi, le deluge
After me, flood
[Verse 3]Февраль. Достать чернил и плакать!
Писать о феврале навзрыд
Пока грохочущая слякоть
Весною черною горит
Февраль. Достать чернил и плакать!
Писать о феврале навзрыд
Пока грохочущая слякоть
Весною черною горит

Oh really? I don’t know that story… I thought something completely different because of the poem. I thought that, the poem being written in 1945 (I guess) by the Russian Boris Pasternak, this song was about World War II and what happen to the prisonners and things like that. But Im certainly really really wrong… I just wondered what the people in her song struggled for. Anyway,I guess I found a correct translation of the poem:
“February. Get ink, shed tears.
Write of it, sob your heart out, sing,
While torrential slush that roars
Burns in the blackness of the spring.
Go hire a buggy. For six grivnas,
Race through the noice of bells and wheels
To where the ink and all you grieving
Are muffled when the rainshower falls.
To where, like pears burnt black as charcoal,
A myriad rooks, plucked from the trees,
Fall down into the puddles, hurl
Dry sadness deep into the eyes.
Below, the wet black earth shows through,
With sudden cries the wind is pitted,
The more haphazard, the more true
The poetry that sobs its heart out.”
Respekt the Unrespected: “Apres Moi”
I’m excited for this one, mostly because I think that I can connect this to both “Do the Right Thing” and our talk of rhetorical strategies (RCL victory!!). So make sure to read my RCL blog because it should be a much needed elaboration on this one. But hopefully I don’t make it too obvious that I know nothing about European history. In fact, if anyone out there would like to supplement my analysis with information about the French and Russian Revolution in the comment section that would be greatly appreciated.
“Après moi le deluge” means “after me comes the flood.” Therefore, I think the speaker feels that following his/ her death, the world will descend into chaos and violence. The quote is strewn with bad omens, pretension, and ill-will. Fittingly, it is a quote by King Louis XVI, whose execution was a cornerstone of the brutal, merciless French Revolution.
For a little bit more historical background, we can analyze the stanza in this song that is completely Russian. The English translation is:
February. Get ink, shed tears.
Write of it, sob your heart out, sing,
While torrential slush that roars
Burns in the blackness of the spring.
Using the language as a hint and by picking out key words and phrases such as “February,” “shed tears,” and “burns in the blackness” we can see that this is a reference to the February Revolution of 1917 which would eventually lead to the fall of the Russian Empire.
This is probably my favorite stanza in the song because the curt, interrupted phrases create hurried, tense feel which reflects the theme of riots quite well. I do not think that the sorrow and urgency is lessened by using simple phrases such as “Get ink, shed tears.” In fact, I think by not elaborating, the words retain their power and effect. Additionally, the imagery created by the last two sentences is wonderfully intense. Just as with “Do the Right Thing,” the song suggests that the mightiest riots break out at night because under the cloak of darkness, the fire burns brightest. The anger of people seems to be the most intense and volatile when their perception is clouded by darkness.
Parts of the song such as this one seem to be told from the viewpoint of a rioter. However, the tone, melody, and the title would suggest that the primary speaker is some distanced, powerful, and cruel figurehead, perhaps a member of the elite class. The chord progressions in the song create a taunting and threatening tone. In wild, ridiculous lines such as “Be afraid of the lame, they’ll inherit your legs,” it is evident that the speaker is almost poking fun at the rioters, but in a very cold, sadistic way. Additionally, if you listen to the song you can hear that there are a lot of throaty grunts in the song. This brutish detail again serves to portray the speaker as somewhat of a bully. Then towards the end, the speaker literally whimsically hums “la da la da la dum” right after speaking in detail about the pains endured by the public. To me, this proves that Regina is developing this speaker as an egotistic, manical sadist who, as the title suggests, believes that they themselves are the almighty power that is holding back the “flood” or the downfall of society.
Again, for analysis of the rest of the lyrics and how they tie to Do the Right Thing and rhetoric see my RCL blog!
